The ‘Cirque du O.J.’

Posted: Tuesday, September 18, 2007 8:19 AM

As Judge Nancy Oesterle of Las Vegas looked out at the multitude of TV camera crews and the squadron of satellite trucks ringing the courthouse, she said, "I guess this is what they call a media frenzy! I've never seen anything like this before."

Welcome to what some wags are calling the "Cirque du O.J.", the hottest ticket in Vegas right now.

VIDEO: O.J. Simpson in jail

Oesterle has been appointed by the court system to brief the media on the upcoming court proceedings involving O.J. Simpson as news organizations prepare for yet another trial involving the notorious ex-jock, charged this time with a hotel-room heist at gunpoint.

Simpson told police he was just trying to recover some sports memorabilia that belonged to him, but police contend he and a group of buddies barged into the room with weapons drawn, something officers say amounts to armed robbery, burglary and a slew of other felonies.

Déjà vu
I'm a veteran of the first two O.J. trials: the criminal case where Simpson was acquitted of murdering his ex-wife Nicole and her friend Ron Goldman, and the civil trial where the Goldman family and the estate of Nicole Brown Simpson won millions of dollars in damages from O.J. (Although they've collected only a modest sum so far.)

The circus atmosphere is familiar to me as I spot many of the same colleagues from O.J. I and II in the press scrum outside the courthouse, and as I listen to the rumor mill about the case, running once again at warp speed.

So why the continuing fascination with Simpson? Maybe it's because his previous trials had all the elements of great pulp fiction: fame, fortune, sex, race and a bloody double murder. Oesterle says that Simpson was ordered held without bail initially because he was considered a flight risk. (Remember that famous Bronco chase?)

Now, is it O.J. starring in a half-baked remake of "Ocean's 13?" Whatever it is, we're back at it once again as the State of Nevada girds itself for arguably the most sensational robbery trial in recent history.

It may not be "the trial of the century," as the Simpson murder case in Los Angeles was billed, but it's got everybody talking in Vegas. Pretty soon, the locals will probably be quoting odds on a "guilty" or "not guilty" verdict as the case unfolds.

We have done this to ourselves.
If we would stop paying to see the"freak show" it would close down and move on
I don't think O.J. can ever get a fair trial based on his "alledged" get away 13 yrs ago.
would it not be some kind if justice if he went to jail for this when he has been walking around all thease years after murdering two people. I am sur he is not worried after all he got away with double murder.
O.J. seems hell-bent on relishing the infamy he has earned, and besmirching what’s left of his reputation.  What would possess him to join himself with a group of thugs to commit felonious acts?  Did he expect his victims to just whimper about their humiliation without recourse?  What was he thinking?

Despite his claims about repossessing his property, it’s hard to believe that his tactic is anything but imprudent and indignant.  O.J. is not only reckless and tactless, he seems heedless in his course to willfully orchestrate his own self-destruction.  His woeful lapse of judgment makes it so easy for his enemies to ensnare him.

Apparently, putting into words and manuscript form his musings about the horrific murder of his ex-wife and lover was not contemptible enough.  He had to snatch the headlines once again by committing felony in the company of those who are gleefully capitalizing on his infamy.  If all that is being said about him is true, then O.J. has apparently taken leave of his commonsense.

That being the case, he may be suffering form a rare type of disorder that is yet to be classified.  I call it chronic self-aggrandizing syndrome.  Some jail time may actually do him some good.  His time in isolation is a perfect opportunity for him to reflect on the mess that he has made of his life, given the advantages and opportunities he’s had.

He is indeed the chief engineer of the train-wreck his life has turned into.  He brought all this upon himself.  It’s hard to believe that 60 year-old man, and the only parent of his two kids still continues to act like a school yard bully.  He deserves all the vitriolic loathing that that the public has for him.   A hard life awaits fools who refuse to wise up.  Since he insists on acting like an imbecile, he should be treated like one.

Do we really need anymore air time for this murdering nobody?  Just move on folks, nothing of worth to see here.  I wish the media would stop sensationalizing this kind of garbage...
Please stop! Enough about OJ!  I grew up in San Francisco (same age even) right over the hill from the "Juice" and the area he grew up in was not bad.  City College is not a slum college and he always wants the world to feel sorry for poor ol OJ. Even his comments in the book about "IF" he did the murders is laughing in the face of everyday people with more common sense then he will ever exhibit.  So what if he doesn't trust the police - then have someone else call them on your behalf and have the stuff investigated without going in like gangbusters.  For a change he could use his head instead of his gigantic EGO and the rest of us would stop reading about him.  OJ, get a life!

PC
Who is going to prosecute the thief who stold OJ's stuff?
I am amazed at the lack of seemingly educated people not being able to rationalize simple events. Is this society so narrow minded that guilt or innocence is judged on your concept that no one of your race could commit a crime. People of all colors and race commit crimes and anyone with any level of intelligence should be able to think through the facts and evidence and make a judgement on what is obvious and set aside the hero syndrome. WE are letting opinionated and self-serving influence our own power to make decisions and use our own power of rational thinking.
He still has that smirk on his face (arragance on high)thinking I'll get away with it again. "Poor O.J."he just might (should ) spend the rest of his life in prison!!!
OJ, OJ, When will you learn, I am so tired of this media frenzyness!!!! blah, blah , blah, OJ, Blah
What ever happened to the saying "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" well tape recording, thugs robbing thugs...this circus will only give Las Vegas a blackeye. Now what I'm really tired of is Mark Furhman. This sleeze bags makes his living trashing OJ, when in fact OJ would have been convicted in 1995 if Mark hadn't blown the case.
OJ will get locked up for trying to steal his own belongings.... this is hilarious to me (although probably not hilarious to the people he threatened).

One day, in the next year or two, we will all wake up one morning to find that he was murdered by another inmate.  He's spent the last 13 years wasting everyone else's air and it will all come to an end before we know it.
If everybody would ignore this garbage, maybe it would just go away and the media could find something worthwhile to report on
I could care less about OJ, but why don't we let the system work. He may have been set-up.
dont kids...he may get away with all that he has done...up till now....but just waite...he won.t brain wash ..bribe .,or out smart his cerater ...God.nor his God satin get him off...

hie days are comeing...
I heard the audio and thought I was listening to a Pulp Fiction scene, I was waiting for the part about taking a  bite of a Kahuna burger and someone reciting Ezekiel.....
O.J. was setup. Does anyone think that this funny that they would setup a recording device in that hotel room. I heard on fox news that this was supposed to be a sting to fake like they would sell his stuff. No one said OJ had a gun if any one had a gun. They said because in the recording someone said "get against the wall." Even the guy being robbed said OJ didn't have a gun, SO why is he being charged? He is stupid for getting himself caught up in this though.
It's about time this arrogance was nipped.  Even his grin is arrogant.  Hey!  ow he can write another book, "How I Fooled 'Em, Twice".  Let's hope the police in Las Vegas don't mess it up like Los Angeles did.
Hah!  OJ, OJ,  When will you learn!  Maybe now, you will get a fair trial and actually be found GUILTY!!  We can hope. Then, maybe you will vanish.  Lordy, enuf already.

who actually cares anymore. OJ and Brittany Spears can and should just disappear from the public media - many of us are just sick to death of too much media coverage on people that should be ignored.
The majority of everyday citizens in this country would pick up the telephone and report to the police that they have had property stolen and they know who has it and where it is.  But O.J., and other thugs like him, decide to take care of it themselves.  He was never accused of being very smart-he could just run carrying a football.  I really didn't expect him to act any differently than he has.
Mr. Simpson once again proves beyond cavil that he's a pinhead.  The transcript excerpts already played on television are sufficient to support a prosecution.
I love OJ!
One look at the smug, arrogant half smile on his face should tell everyone that he feels he will once again "beat the rap".   No wonder the terrorists of the world see the U.S. as an "easy" target -- we show our stupidity so easily!!!!!!1!
GUILTY OR NOT GUILTY?
IT IS A JOB OF THE OFFICIALS. dES NOT BELONG TO THE PUBLIC's OPINION!
WAS HE RIGHT OR WRONG TO TAKE HIS STUFF BY GUNS?
IN MY OPINION OJ WAS 100% WRONG!!!
HE SHOULD TAKE THAT ISSUE TO THE OFFICIALS AND PROBABLY HE COULD HAVE BACK HIS STUFF WITHOUT A POSSIBLE JAIL TERM!
I would like everyone to remember a couple of key points here. O.J. was not convicted in the criminal trial. It does not matter what or who we think, the LAW said he is innocent. It is not fair to run around saying "he did this or that" without the jury agreeing with you. The civil trial he was found guilty, but I would again caution you to remember that the evidence to convict in the civil trial had a far and away LESS bar to convict. This man was found innocent, but since the public and media didnt like the result, the disgruntled decided to take him to trial again till they got the result they wanted. They all but broke this guy, then they expect him to survive for the rest of his life with very little income except his NFL retirement.

Dont get me wrong I am NOT defending his actions. I am merely saying "what if" he is actually innocent? How would you feel if you had, had your whole life trashed based upon some thready evidence presented by alot of disgruntled people at a very biased trial whereupon you knew going in you were going to be found guilty. Did anyone actually expect him to get a fair hearing? Is he going to get one now? Absolutely NOT!!!!! The media frenzy has already said repeatedly on LIVE AT 5 nationwide that this "PAYBACK TIME" by the justice system. Is that or this what this country is based on? Is this what our justice system has stooped too. Folks if it truly is then we as a nation are in horrible trouble. And for all you people out there that are clammoring for the gallows for O.J., you would probably want to search each of you're hearts and say is this what I truly want my country to become. For if it is, then you are getting ready to get what Iraq, Iran, Syria, and the rest has already. Good luck, because this is not what the good ol U.S.A. has stood for historically.
no one ever said that being a psychopath included having any sort of rational thinking, as o.j. clearly demonstrates again, this man is a menace to society and should be dealt with accordingly before someone really gets hurt or killed ....AGAIN !
So when you say OJ was set-up do u mean it was a "sting" operation. Like the one OJ was doing!  Birds of a feather huh!
You may think I'm crazy, but I watched every minute broadcast on his murder trial, and I "found" him innocent!  And now this deal really looks like a hokey set-up to me.  I believe that he does have the right to take back his own belongings, and I haven't seen or heard enough "evidence" as yet to convict him of robbery. What ever happened to innocent until PROVEN guilty?
Who cares if OJ gets a fair trial?  The man literally got away with murder, and I still don't know why.  I'm interested in what happens to him because I hope he spends the rest of his twisted life in prison, or under it.  I hope he's miserable there.  He wants attention?  Well, he has it now.  If that makes him happy, I'm sorry.
How ironic that OJ got away with double homicide, but will hopefully go to jail for trying to steal his own stuff!!!  It's too bad they are holding him without bail 'cause I was hoping for another Bronco chase - something to overshadow Britney!
Just another ploy to make the poor black man richer. He won't be punished, and anyone with a half brain knows he is a murderer.I agree, his smile is one of arrogance..maybe we need to go back to vigilante justice to really have justice.
I'm sure you won't publish this because you didt't even consider what was wrong in the first trial you just want to to believe that OJ killed those people well you need to know that the real killers are going free but that doesn"t matter does it?  Mr Goldman needs to get a job, his son is not the only person that has been murdered. I'm surprised you haven't killed him already.
I think OJ Simpson deserves to be hung. He was guilty then, just like he is guilty now. What goes around comes around....and his train just pulled in.
Wouldn't surprise me if OJ uses this as an excuse by saying he found the "real killer" in that room.  Of course he didn't call the police about his supposed stolen property because the Goldman and Brown families would get it all, as they should.  This man is a piece of garbage.
I sincerely think that O.J. Simpson will never get fair trial. Plese stop this enough is enough, let O.J. take care of his family. This is the fault of media who are still lingering, people are not intrested to hear about O.J., Please grow up media.!!!
Some of the dumbest comments I've read anywhere.
Like him or hate him, this sounds like a setup
Regarless if he was set up or not, he went in with intent to commit a crime. Maybe it's karma coming back on him for the murder of his wife.
Outrage!!  Release O.J.!! He will completly solve this robbery issue as soon as he finds Nicole's killer !
I am so tired of hearing about OJ.  Why don't all of you fools who want OJ locked up just let justice prevail as it did the last time.  Did we miss the fact that a tape recorder was in the room.  Why was it there?  When you go to a hotel room, do you bring your tape recorder?  We should open up our minds and think people.  What is wrong with this society?  We decide that a person is guilty before they are tried and convicted.  Isn't that backward?  Let's just let the court decide.....
O.J. is going down this time. He'll get a fair trial, and he'll be convicted (unless he cops a plea). Either way, he's going to do some hard time.
As for postings that say O.J. didn't have a gun, it doesn't matter under the law. If a member of a group uss a weapon to rob, they can ALL be charged with armed robbery.
"REMEMBER THE GLOVE" GET OVER IT AMERICA, DON'T HATE THE PLAYER, HATE THE GAME"
I heard the "book" was doing well.  Maybe this will pay off the Goldmans/Browns and they will go away as well.
I hate to bring the earth shattering news to some of you who believe Simpson was found to be innocent of the murders; but in reality he was found not guilty. Big difference. A juror may really believe he did it, but also believe there is insufficient evidence to prove it, and may vote not guily on that basis. If this robbery goes to trial, don't be surprised at a repeat...
He may get off this one again, money talks, unfortunately. It is time to deal with these celebrities seriously and show them that they are not above the law. If it were one of us, we would get time in jail no question asked.
This racist country needs to get over their obsession with O. J..  Had Nicole left him with his wife and children instead of being the slut that she was all of this could have been avoided.  O. J. beat white America at their own game and that is all their is to it.  Murderers have been buying freedom since this was a country and it just happened to be someone black this time and this is the real issue here.  You would think Nicole and Ron Goldman were the only people ever murdered in the United States if you just read the news alone.  There are more serious issues at hand here.  Does anyone think that they just didn't want to convict O. J.?  They tried everything they could and the evidence that he commited the crime was not there.  This country needs to get over it.  Our country is at war.  Forget this nonsense and prejudice because I am sure if they couldn't prove you guilty of a crime you would not want to be treated as white America is treating O. J.
He just couldn't leave well enough alone. He got away with 2 murders and still can't seem to stay straight. I swear, him and Michael Vick are givin' brothas a bad rap!
All white juries have sent black men to prison and to death row in this country for decades, many or maybe most of them innocent. The white police has also killed, abused and harrassed blacks since Africans were brought here against their will. One "old" white man was recently convicted for "life" for killing 3 young black men in Mississippi decades ago.  The rest of the white men involved in the killings lived full lives and died of old age.  An all white jury refused to convict them when they were taken to trial right after the killings.  This is just one of many such cases in the history of the American justice system.

For those of you who are so concerned about the state of the American justice system, do a little resarch on how many times all white juries found whites innocent of crimes against Blacks.

This does not absorb O.J. Simpson of a crime if he actually committed it, but a jury found that the evidence was not sufficient enough to convict him.  So white America, get over it.  The evidence against Robert Blake was just as strong for killing his wife and the jury did not convict him either. But there was and is no American outrage (because he is a white male do you think?).

What Blacks have always known in this country is that a Black male is always guilty until proven innocent and often times remains guilty in the eyes of many whites when he is proven innocent.  That is why this is about much more than OJ.  This is really about the state of racism in this country and a justice system that has historically been unjust to certain groups of people.

As for Mr Goldman, I would like to know if it is true that he had not spoken to his son for many years because he was gay.  If so, maybe he is trying to deny his own guilt by his obsession with OJ.

For our illustrious news folks who also have a racial obsession with OJ; do you know that our children are being snatched from the streets every day? did you know that they are killed and abused in sex rings that maybe operating in your neighborhoods?  Try focusing on the young men and women coming back from Iraq who cannot find jobs, who are have problems readjusting, who's bodies, minds and spirits are broken.   Is it to much to ask you to get away from your obsession with OJ and focus on something that really makes difference in our lives.
