‘Go! Go! Go! Get out of here!’

RANCHO BERNARDO, Calif. – "Go! Go! Go! Get out of here!"

A San Diego cop is yelling at people over the PA system in his police cruiser for people in this pricey northern suburb to leave as fast as possible. It's 4 a.m. here and a huge wall of flame is roaring in the hillside behind the houses. We're being pelted by burning embers as we take pictures of the people fleeing.

One woman tells me that she's packed very little, just her purse and some clothing and diapers for her baby, who slumbers peacefully in the kid seat belted behind her. The air is thick with smoke and ash; a good time to get out.

Firefighters work to contain a wildfire in Malibu
SLIDESHOW: Furious wildfires

There are seven fires burning in San Diego County, bringing back memories of the 2003 blazes that blackened a major portion of the area and burned hundreds of homes. Everyone fears a repeat this time.

Bad and getting worse
As our cameraman races down Interstate 15 with our tape, he phones us to report that he's stopped to get more pictures of houses burning along the side of the highway. Earlier, the community of Ramona in the hills northeast of San Diego was being evacuated but now the flames are in the city proper.

Normally, the calmest time for major woodland fires is the early morning hours, but the strong Santa Ana winds that are driving these fires just won't let up. Firefighters tell us that when the wind is roaring like this at more than 40 miles an hour, there's little they can do but to get out of the way

They're hoping that a break in the weather and some daylight will allow their aerial tanker planes and helicopters to get over the flames and beat them down somewhat. But the forecast calls for the nasty winds to continue, so the firefighters acknowledge that it's bad and not getting better.

You know, there are a lot of people who don't believe in climate change," Pelley remarks.

"You won't find them on the fire line in the American West anymore," Tom Boatner says. "'Cause we've had climate change beat into us over the last ten or fifteen years. We know what we’re seeing, and we're dealing with a period of climate, in terms of temperature and humidity and drought that's different than anything people have seen in our lifetimes."
My daughter lives in San Diego in Del Mar area...does anyone know how close the fires are and if she is close to being evacuated?  She has gone home from work to get things ready to leave.  Any information would be very much appreciated.
Janet from Texas
Does anyone know if  any air travel has been delayed, coming in or going out of San Diego, this morning? Would appreciate hearing.
I live in Tijuana Mexico ( just cross the broder)The sky in drak smells like smoke outside. My pool is covered will ash. My prayes go out to the people in the path of the fires.
Please, attach a map to this page so we can see where the fires are, my sister lives in San Diego!!
News coverage for this is about on par with anything that happens year after year....
Robenett- Mira Mesa should be far enough away as of now.
Good for you, Mike from New Orleans!!  I am so sick and tired of people questioning why we are rebuilding South Louisiana.  The people whose homes are burning now will simply return and rebuild them even though So. California goes through this every year in addtion to the mid slides every year.  But people keep coming back to rebuild.  Because it is their home.  And that is why we are trying to rebuild So. Louisiana and the gulf coast. Do you get it?  We know what it is like to lose everything we loved including our loved ones and so our hearts and our prayers go out to those who are in harms way. Please be safe and God Bless you all.  Ann, BR, LA
I'm at school at UCI right now but I was born and raised in Poway and my family still lives there.  Apparently, the fire is burning North Poway and we live just behind Poway High School and they just got an immediate evacuation order.  It hasn't jumped Espola yet as far as I know.  Mira Mesa High shelter is still open so I don't think the fire is threatening that area just yet.  Please keep posting if anyone has any information.
To the lady that worked at WOP.  I wanted to let you know that the animals were evacuated quite a while ago and are safe at the Del Mar Horse Track.  My husband works for San Diego Gas & Electric who received the report.  There are many good people working to get these fires under control.  Remember that saying, "It takes a village".  We are in this together.
To Robenett,
Your daughter in Mira Mesa is fine. Mira Mesa is being used for evacuation. You can go on www.nbcnews.com to get the most current updates.
Beckie
My daughter lives in Spring Valley, east of SD and close to Poway and La Mesa  She is over 9 months pregnant and we (her parents who live 7 hours away in Northern Cal), are supposed to fly or drive down there the moment she goes into labor.  I'm not sure we can get thru by car as she told me this morning the 94 which backs their house has been shut down.  Any info on airport conditions?  Her husband works at UCSD and had to turn back home after trying to get to work this morning because the smoke was so bad. It certainly adds drama to a birth situation.
my brother lives in Ramona and thinks his house is gone. My mother lives in Encinitas and said her electricity is going off and on.  Mom, get out now please!  I hate being so far away from home.  I love you all and my prayers are with every person in the midst of the devistation.  Be safe and God speed to all.
My son and Daughter in law live in Rancho Bernardo area--right near the fire that was set last july. I know this is a shot in the dark, but does anyone know that area? They live on the edge of the golf course there. If you know of the area, do you know if any of the fires are near there? Laura...Michigan
Mike from New Orleans -
I'm really sorry the public seemed to be critical of those living in your area, but the truth is, every area is dangerous. In California, earthquakes and wildfires. In the mid-west, tornadoes. South, hurricanes. I live a few miles from the Pentagon - after 9/11 we were having terror attack drills and learning how to survive locked in a room with no air going in or out for half a week. There's no such thing as a risk-free area... you got a hurricane, California's getting fires.
My best friend lives in California but thankfully she's to the north. Another friend is in Bakersfield but her area's safe. My prayers are with all of you in the path of these fires. Praying for safety and protected homes and lives for all those near the fires... and safety and patience for those fighting them.
I've lived in southern california my whole life.  This wild fires thing is nothing unusual, its just business as usual.  It just seems alot worse since there are so many more houses then there were decades ago.
I Live in CHula Vista and I'm willing to help. I want to volunteer but i don't have information of where to go and what to do...If you guys have information please email me!!!
I am concerned for family and friends in and around San Diego. I grew up in San Diego, I am in Illinois now but visit often.I agree with everyone else there is'nt enough detailed info about what areas, because there are so many communities in San Diego please try to be more specific to the areas.
I, too, am curious about the Valley Center area, as welll as the Carlsbad.
For out of area people check, in on the local San Diego NBC station nbcsandiego dotcom for update info. We've had the TV on constantly since last night, the car is packed and we're just waiting to see what happens. It looks like hell outside, all grey black at 10am with ash falling. Much scarier and closer than 2003. Please pray for us Califorian's
i feel for all of you with relatives in the area.  i just got off the phone with my son in Penasquitos and he is evacuating right now.  i lost my house in Crest in El Cajon in the 2003 fire, and shortly after moved to Arkansas.  i have that same sick feeling in my stomach all over again.  pray hard for everyone
Thank you for this web site.  My sister and family live in Palomar Mt and they have left. She said fire was all around them.  If any one knows of this area and how it is please write in.
Thanks,
Having lived in Colorado immediately adjacent to the Hayman fire at its peak, I found the need for information paramont.  The following website contains a wealth of information and links to other official information sites.  There is a big picture look as well as some of the detail and maps are part of the information set.
Thanks for the coverage of San Diego. Believe me, the situation here is FAR worse than in Malibu, but the media overall only seems to care about the movie stars.
It seems a bit like sour grapes to bicker about New Orleans vs CA when people are in real danger, suffering from shock, anxiety and fear. Let's just all accept that we each live in areas that may have  natural dangers ( fire, flood tornado, volcanic eruptions, severe winter weather) and proay for both the residents and emergency workers fighting this hugh disaster. Be kind to one another!!!
I live in the North Park area very close to downtown, the stench of smoke fills the air and has covered my car in ash.  I have stayed home from work today and have my windows closed and I am glued to the T.V. set for any info.  For anyone looking for specific info. which I must admit is pretty shoddy on the news as far as specifics go at this point.  There are a total of 8 fires, one of the biggest ones right now is burning south of Descanso and the other big one is burning through Rancho Bernardo and has crossed the 15 and is heading towards Rancho Santa Fe.  Anyone North of the 56, South of Del Dios Hwy., West of the 15 and East of the 5 is ordered to evacuate.  The other fires are peppered in the East County. Most of the world only thinks that Malibu is burning!!  GOD HELP US!!! All of my prayers go out to all of my San Diego neighbors.
My husband and my self feel for every one and our prayers with each of you.
I'm in Sabre Springs, south of the 56 evacuation area.  The cars are packed.  Pomerado hospital has been evacuated as a precaution and because of the bad air. www.knsd.com as well as www.kgtv.com will have information.  I hate Santa Anas, there's nothing you can do, or that can be done about them, but they are always ALWAYS so devastating to us all.
LAKE ELSINORE IS OKAY.  I'm in Corona just North of there.  There's nothing going on near us.
Our son and daughter-in-law, along with our 2 year old grandson evacuated Rancho Bernardo this morning.  Please keep us updated on the status in the area.
To Joyce Romero - The reports are the staff of the Wild Animal Park has been evacuated to the Zoo and some of the smaller animals have also been evacuated.  The animals in the large enclosures have been left, but there are fire breaks around the park and ponds/water holes where they can retreat.  My throughts go out to the people of San Diego and I hope that everyone can evacuate safely.  I would also suggest that people who are not in the immediate area not log onto the local websites - there are reports that local residents are unable to access the sites as the servers are jammed.

Couple of closer view maps of some of the fires and evacuation areas
Current fire info from National Interagency Fire Center(scroll down to select applicable fire)

Louise from Coarsegold, Spring Valley is still fine and so is the airport area. If you fly down, you should have no trouble getting to her.  The one we are watching here is the Harris fire. Right now the winds seem like are pushing that further west, but it is very unpredictable.

Watch the nbcsandiego.com website. If you see the Steele Canyon evacutation site evacuated, that is a sign that eastern Spring Valley and Rancho San Diego risk has gone way up from fire and smoke. Note: people are now being directed to a different site because Steele Canyone is full, but that evac center is still open.

i have been affected in a tremendous way.  my dad lives down by the 56 and has been evacuated from the rancho bernado area fire.  my boyfriend and his family live in fallbrook, which is a recent fire and are being evacuated.  my brother lives by the irvine fire and it has been recommended that he evacuate. i personally am being surrounded by the fallbrook fire, a fire in lake elsinore that hasnt been on the news yet, and a fire three miles away from me in temecula.
It's a pity the media only seems to give attention to Malibu and now Rancho Santa Fe. Oh no, Sting's mansion is going to burn, the world is going to end!
We live in Aliso Viejo, CA. About eight miles west of the Santiago Canyon / Irvine fire. The wind here is very strong and the smoke is thick enough to find it's way into the house, even this far away.
Our famly's prayers go out to all those affected in So Cal.
For Gloria in Chula Vista
They are looking for donations of prepared food, at Qualcom Stadium for the people who have been evacuated.  They also need pet food and food and water dishes for pets.  I'm sure other evacuation centers could use help as well.
I just want to know why two people from New Orleans found it necessary to talk crap about San Diego in such a difficult time. Michelle from Washington, you handled that nicely.
My grandchildren (ages 2&4)are living in San Marcos in an apartment complex with their mother who does not communicate with either us or our son. We are desperate to know if they are O.K. Have there been evacuations in that area?
Does anyone know of a map showing the areas in san Diego, Escondido. I have freinds and family there.
David
California has had a century to put up fire breaks, walls, and design their cities and coutnryside to make Wildfires containable.  These fires are merely the result of environmental wackos that take their cause to an extreme and a lack of engineering firebrakes and whatever is necessary to make fires containable.  Mother nature has done her job and got rid of a lot of undergrowth and overgrowth.  So why complain?  If you worship nature, worship Her now as she claims homes, cities, treasures, and keepsakes.  If She is your God get busy worshiping her cruel ways. If Mother Nature makes a poor god then use the brains God gave you to design cities and urban forestation programs and tree management in such a way that extensive wildfire disasters cannot happen again.  You have had a hundred years.  Maybe it is time to think ahead or move to an area that is not a tinderbox waiting to burn every few years. If enough people leave property values will fall to a level that will encourage action... those cities should be uninsurable by law. They are merely wealthy Katrinaites with the same mentality but their solution is cheaper than building dikes and pumps... merely building and designing firebrakes and eliminating fuel where possible.  That said, my heart does go out to all in their loss and sorrow... but I do believe it is time to fix the root problem and not just leave it to firefighters and insurance companies.
Im in Escondido and the fire has yet to be seen close to my area...I think its just by the san pasqual area...We havent receved a call yet..
Bonsal is not in immediate danger but very close to the Rice fire. Fallbrook High School is the local shelter ready for evacuations
Robnett,

I live just off of Mira Mesa. The fire is to the North of us. It is not coming our way and we are surrounded by green belts (Heavily watered areas). With the direction of the wind, I doubt it will come our way. Hope this gives you some peace of mind.
I have family in Fallbrook, and student at UC San Diego.  Any news about either?
