A ‘beacon of light’ rises from the ashes

MALIBU, Calif. –  The drive down Malibu Canyon is very familiar to me, having grown up in Southern California. I’m used to the twists and turns of the windy canyon road, as well as the brown hills, dry from the summer heat.

But on Sunday, as I approached the end of the canyon road, where you can see the outline of the Pacific Ocean, I saw black. The charred hillsides still smelled of fire. To my left, the church I passed hundreds of times on the way to the beach was gone.

Parishioners at Malibu’s Presbyterian Church took a moment to reflect and give thanks on Sunday, along with many in Southern California, despite the fact that their church had been engulfed by flames and burned to the ground on live television a week earlier.

The charred remains of Malibu’s Presbyterian Church – one of the first buildings destroyed in  Southern California wildfires.

"Last week we lost our building," said Pastor Greg Hughes of Malibu Presbyterian Church, "but we have not lost our church. Thanks for proving me right."

For this packed auditorium of over 500 people, the church is a community of people, not four walls and a roof.

"Talk about being a ‘beacon of light on a hill!’" said Hughes as laughter broke out and brought some levity to the group of people who had suffered a great collective loss.

Through the ashes, they will rise up
For now, the Malibu Performing Arts Center is their sanctuary. On Sunday they sang, they prayed, and they gave thanks.

They made the center home by hanging up some of the notes of encouragement and prayer that had been sent in to them from all over the country. Brunch was served by friends from Bel-Air Presbyterian Church. And the local synagogue offered to share their building space for the preschool program.

Hughes encouraged his congregation to go to the building site and stand in the ashes. He reminded them that God was weeping with them and crying with them, but that out of the ashes of the church, they might glorify him up on that hill again.

At the end of the service, he pointed to a cross on the stage. The cross was on the church’s steeple and was recovered from the fire. It was a little mangled, but intact – just like the community.

MAY GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU,AND I'M SURE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO REBUILD YOUR CHURCH WITH A LITTLE GUIDANCE AND HELP FROM OUR LORD.
Your posititive attitude, thankfulness and joy in the  midst of a crisis has been an inspiration to everyone who is watching and searching for ways to help you.  God bless each and every one of you  abundantly! !
I love the MSNBC title of this story: "Church Lives".  It is the people of God coming together - in good times and in bad times.  You are truly a "Lighthouse" as you encourage and help those around you to rebuild.
Why this horrific fire happened is only known to God and whatever his plan may be.  I am sure he will give you the strength to carry on and over this tragedy.
May God Continue to Bless ALL the people of the fires of Los Angelos and surrounding areas. You are a Blessing to people who have lost hope of being really in the suffering that Why thier home and not someone elses??  God and God alone knows why and we have Just got to Trust in HIM and not worry about Our homes that are gone but that Our Lives were spared for a Reason that we cannot fathome. Mark A Friend in Christ-Jesus.
God bless you all and help you to move forward rebuilding your church. It is so true, the church is not a building, the church is the people. All of God's people, in every corner of the world, together make up the church.
Our house burned down in 1996 and it ended up being something that we really needed to experience. Please have no doubt that your faith is being tried by this fire. Lean on the Lord and He will give you understanding. Glorify Him by continuing to serve Him in the 'Church' without walls.
Buildings are temporary but time with the Father is eternal.
This is a time for every American who is a Christian to give thanks for what we have, and we have so much! But also to pray for our fellow believers who have lost much in this fire. Next time it might be us, and we will need the prayers of others. God will deliver us from the flames. He is faithful, and so can we be.
God said I will be with you for ever and ever.be still and know that I am God.
Your example of faith in the face of adversity is what church is all about, not the building.  We pray for your safety and peace.  God does not leave us comfortless.  He holds us in His hands.
things will work out for sure,as the big guy upstairs has a plan for sure.
The Lord tells us we will be refined by fire.  I don't think He means this literally in most cases, but I DO know that your church will be stronger by going through this.  When hard times hit, I keep my sanity by asking "Lord, what are You wanting me to learn from this?"  In time, He shows me.  It sounds as if your community is opening it's arms.  Perhaps the entire area can become closer through this.  God bless you all.
God has a lot in store for California. You will be surprised how your church will come together and grow and reach others that you never would have reached if you had sat in your normal seat each week without this temporary roadblock. Each day as members of your church are involved in the rebuild make a point of letting your actions as Christians be shown to everyone that works on you church or is involved in the rebuild. God is calling on Christians in California to wake up and grow the church, to not be satisfied being a pew potato, but to get out there and be fishers of men... God Bless!
