Soldiers smiling through the pain

Posted: Thursday, November 08, 2007 7:40 PM

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The human spirit never fails to amaze me. Our ability to overcome adversity, to fight for the things that really matter, to struggle against the odds.

Nowhere is that spirit more obvious or inspiring than here at the Center for the Intrepid in San Antonio – a high-tech rehabilitation facility at Brooke Army Medical Center, built entirely through private donations.  It’s where hundreds of service members who’ve been badly wounded in combat begin the long and painful road to recovery.

I arrived at the center this morning, several hours in advance of President Bush’s visit this afternoon. What a humbling experience.

There are hundreds of men and women here, recovering from horrific wounds. Burns, amputations, blindness. They have suffered and lost, and paid the price for service.

Yet, most are smiling – even through pain.

Uncanny ability to ‘smoke and joke’
I’m not sure I can explain why. Soldiers and Marines have always had an uncanny ability to "smoke and joke" under extreme circumstances. I saw lots of that today. Men and women, some burned beyond recognition or with only two limbs, sitting in the warm sunshine, telling stories, anticipating the president’s arrival.

Some clearly want to prove they’re tough.  They have state-of-the-art equipment at their disposal, but it’s still up to them to put in the endless hours of rehab.

U.S. President George W. Bush is presented a T-shirt from Lance Cpl. Isaac Gallegos during a visit to the Center for the Intrepid at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, November 8, 2007.

One soldier said it was a big boost for morale for Bush to come and meet them. He wanted the president to know he missed his buddies in Afghanistan and that he’s looking forward to rejoining the fight – with his one good leg.

Bush, for his part, marveled at the technology. He watched amputees climb a rock wall using prosthetic limbs. He offered encouragement to a soldier who had lost both legs as he balanced on a fitness ball. He spent time talking with dozens of soldiers and thanked them for their service. He came and went.

But the men and women who need this place can’t leave just yet. They have much work to do, fighting to regain any version of normalcy. And smiling.

Good article
This is heartbreaking.  I remember when Don Imus pushed this "charity" every morning until enough money was raised to make it a reality.  I know that many, many people raised funds for this wonderful facility, but I heard him placing calls to people to ask for donations.  We should send Christmas packages or something to these young men and women.
Mr. Teague, your article caught my eye because I recently received a forwarded email, providing the physical address of Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and suggesting that I add "A Recovering American Soldier" to my Christmas card list.  I thought it was a good idea and forwarded the email to several of my frineds.  Perhaps this would be a good idea for the Center for the Intrepid as well.
yes, it was a moving day. Thanks to our president for taking the time meet the men and women working hard to recover.
The President should be embarrassed and ashamed to appear in front of the brave men and women who have sacrificed so much for his folly.  At the very least he should apologize for the damage he has done to them, the nation, and the world and then he should resign.
very moving, and good to see these wonderful soldiers, not depressed after these injuries, but as the article states " smoking and joking"... good for them.
God bless the men and women who have sacrificed so much for our freedom. Keep them in your hearts and prayers. Thank all of you for your service.
I would like to learn more about what I could do to raise money etc for this.  Please send me info.
Their bravery humbles me.
All of our soldiers are in my prayers.
It is very important to practice Biblical Principles like; visiting the sick, giving them what they need...
But, for most of US, who are called by God's Name, we
could offer PRAYERS with faith that can move mountains...
believing that God will see them/us through all areas
of their/our lives, amen. God Bless Us all.
Shame on George Bush!  If he really cared about the men and women he's putting in harm's way, HE would have had this facility built with GOVERNMENT funding, instead of the delays entailed trying to secure enough public donations.  Come on now, it's not like we needed a new post office...  More evidence for me to see that we need a President who takes healthcare seriously.  If he can't take it serious enough for our warriors, do you think he (and his ilk) care about your family's?  After all, they are building the 'finest embassy money can buy' in Baghdad....and no one to fill it with. I wonder what the census is at BAMC and the CFTI???
Bravo Zulu to all who supported and continue to support this important place of healing.
It was a very moving article and im glad to see the american people care enough to give money to look after wounded soldiers. The american can feel proud of their achievement.

What price must be paid? I was a Military Policeman stationed at Fitzsimmons General Hospital in Denver in 1970 and I recall all the men that were patients of that hospital. Most missing parts of their bodies that were destroyed by an ugly police action. Once again we find ourselves giving up what others will not give. Sadly to say not everyone suffers. There's no draft so no one to march no one to shout send them home now.Send them home now.
When you are making out your Christmas card list this year, please include the following:
A Recovering American soldier/airman/sailor/marine

         Washington,D.C. 20307-5001
As An Army Retiree, a Combat Infantry Soldier of WW2 and a Korean war vet and now 83 years old I salute all of the young men and women of our armed forces.
I admire your courage and there will come a day when the pain will be gone. Stand Tall!

If only more of us would remember on a daily basis that this is the land of the free only because it is the home of the brave.
Thank you for sharing this news article with us.  I am tired of hearing from the news media denouncing the war instead of giving attention, thanks and praise to the men and women that have fought and been injured.
I feel for these soldiers, this is very heart breaking. Bush is seeing soldiers that he sent over there in the first place.,
It is appalling to see the silver spoon Bush with a military service member who has been used and abused by the wealthy upper class elites like Mr Bush. When are more Americans from all classes in American society going to serve the country and make the ultimate sacrifice like Cpl. Gallegos. I honestly don't know how Bush can sleep at night after seeing this man up close.
As a nation, we owe an enormous debt to these Soldiers and Marines who have sacrificed so much.  The rehab unit at Brook Army Medical Center is an excellent, state of the art facility, but having only one such facility is totally insufficient to provide rehab for the thousands wounded in Iraq. The fact that it was privatley funded I find to be highly indicative of the Bush government's appalling lack of care and concern for our military personnel.  Why are there not facilities such as this at every major military hospital?  The average age of those wounded in Iraq is under 25, they need ongoing medical care, and in many cases with their old life shattered, they will need job and skills training. In addition, an estimated 30% of those deployed to Iraq will suffer from mental and emotional health issues. Where will they go for help? And what about their families whose lives have also been torn apart?   Bush talks a great deal about the debt of grattitude the nation owes these young men and women who have served their country but talk is cheap and does nothing to ease the pain from the physical and emotional injuries they have sustained nor will it help feed their families, assist them in finding employment, or help them build a new future.  Perhaps some of the $10 billion dollars government auditors indicate has been wasted or missused by goverment contractors including VP Cheny's Halliburton, should have been used to help these soldiers and Marines regain their lives.

The proud mother of a Marine
To all of those at Intrepid, know that all of us Americans out here have not forgotten you. We are incredibly thankful and proud and forever inspired by you. God bless you and yours....your human spirit continues to encourage and 'show us the way' on how to deal with adversity. Sent with lots of hope and love, Denise/California
This article moved me to tears.  This center, and the inspiring service men & women in it, should be shown to everyone living in the United States!  Someone should get to Xerox for their "Let's Say Thanks" program of sending cards to our service men & women over in Iraq & Afghanistan so that some of that mail can be re-routed to this center!   Anyone wanting to send a FREE card can just visit www.letssaythanks.com and Xerox will do the rest!   THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR BRAVE & COURAGEOUS SERVICE MEN & WOMEN!!! Thank you also to all of the Caregivers in centers like these.
At times it is extremely difficult for me to watch, or listen to these types of stories, not because of their deformities, but because they enforce the guilt I have, and alot of other Americans should feel over our lack of support to those who have sacrificed so much. How can we ever have a "bad" day knowing what these heroes now go through on a daily basis?
Praise the heroes, giving up your life but bringing lives to thousands.  Each of you in our herats are forever alive, because you are giving hopes with peace to the future.  Peace makers will truly get eternal peace.  Your faiths and hopes overturn pains and odds.  God remembers you in your smile in heaven.  Mabuhay, have life!!! and God bless you more and more.
It is sad to see what is happening to our servicemen and women.  They are truly the best and the bravest America has to offer.  My heart goes out to all of them and their families.  But let's have a reality check here.  Haliburton is building their headquarters in Dubai, Exxon Mobil is showing record breaking profits and the average American is paying more and more for gas.  The typical CEO of a US corporation now earns over three hundred and sixty times what the average worker in that company earns.  I love America and I consider myself a patriot but  President Cheney and all those US companies making untold millions off of this war should be ashamed of themselves.
I can't find the right words for John in San Antonio...
"Thanks to our President for taking the time to meet the men & women working hard to recover...."

I am struggleing to understand such a man, Bush sent these people into a needless & illegal war, for heaven's sake....

People like You is what's Wrong in America.... Simply UNBELIEVABLE!!
This is a really heart touching picture. I love the military and this means alot to show how much they mean to the U.S.
That's so wonderful seeing how strong our soldiers truly are!  Very inspiring, and amazing!  Thanks to all the soldiers fighting for us, and for those recovering, Ooh Rah, stay strong, don't give up, and God Bless!
I am in tears after reading this article.  There is so much we don't hear about.  My husband is a Vietnam Veteran and so I know these soldiers and their families will have to live with this war the rest of thier lives in many different ways.
This story made tears come to my eyes.  These men and women are working hard with the state of the art equipment to regain the life they want and smile as they  have pain daily.  These men and women make me Proud!!
Our troops and vererans have deserved so much for the sacrifices they have made, and will continue to make on our behalf! Your absolute bravery and resolve will never go unnoticed! I THANK YOU! MY BROTHERS!
Hundreds of the wounded get high tech support from privately donated funds.  What about the other 20,000+ soldiers seriously injured?  They get mediocrity at best.  God bless the soldiers.  They will need it as the government is there to support them just like it (George W) has with the hurricane Katrina victims, with lip service.
Using this story to make political statements (like many of you here) is appalling.  You should be ashamed to post that here.  God Bless all those who have sacraficed for this nation.
I am completly taken back by the injuries our brave men and women have suffered as a result of dictator Bush's war for Daddy. He should be executed for war crimes, immediatly!
I am appalled by the suffering of our brave men and women in Dictator Bush's, as well as the whole Bush crime family's war.  He should be executed immediatly for war crimes, as should "Shooter" (Cheney)
"Private donations". How sad is that? When our elected officials have their own medical plan that's far and above what Medicare is for the common folk; when they appropriate funds for "bridges that go nowhere" (in Alaska) and other pork barrel legislation; when they award "no bid" contracts for war-related projects; when millions/ billions of dollars turn up missing; when they sent the troops off to fight with equipment that sorely needed upgrading in order to to help saves lives & prevent injuries, and now we have to use "private donations" to ensure our wounded troops get the best care possible???
But why am I surprised? I've dealt with the VA for 37 years now (lost a leg in 'Nam in '70). The folks who work in the system for the most part are fine, caring folks who do the best with what they've got. Time and again, however, Congress has failed to provide the funds needed so veterans can have their medical needs taken care of in a timely manner. I waited close to three years to get a primary care physician.
If the government is willing to send the troops they should be more than willing- at whatever cost- to take care of them if they come back injured physically or mentally after being in harm's way.

An idea to create ongoing funding for long-term care of our wounded and in support of those who have given the ultimate sacrifice: Place Congress on the Social Security system like other citizens and re-allocate the costs associated with the free retirement benefit plan they currently enjoy. This would help care for and support the true sacrifices of those who need it most.
this is the handiwork of the bush administration. how tragic! thousands killed, tens of thousands maimed & homeless, hundreds of suicides, the list goes on...
Unfortunately per the Walter Reed website, the "Any Soldier Progams are no longer in place.  There are other options.  See below:

Us Postal Service is no longer accepting "Any Service Member" or "A Recovering American Soldier" letters or packages. Mail to "Any Service Member" that is deposited into a collection box will not be delivered.
Instead of sending an “Any Wounded Soldier” letter or package to Walter Reed, please consider making a donation to one of the more than 300 nonprofit organizations dedicated to helping our troops and their families listed on the "America Supports You" website, www.americasupportsyou.mil
My prayers are with all the military and there families that have put there lives on the line and suffered devastating injuries and loss of life. It is a sad day for me as I have a strong spirit and plenty of fight left at age 70. I was born between wars and never had the chance to defend my country on the battlefield, but heaven help those that attack this country on our land they will feel our strength  determination and anger 10 fold from those of us to old to go abroad but ready to stand our ground right here. God Bless America.
My heart goes out to our military service men and women. I respect them and am proud of them. They lay their lives on harms way, because of their sacrifice we can live in peace and comfort. When I heard many many Vets live in poverty and become homeless from post war trauma, I became angry and shame. I think goverment must prepare for these heroes [ all militaries are my hero because their sacrifice I could enjoy the priviliegein U.S] before sending out to civilian life by counselling and job training and finding the job and the shelter. I believe goverment must be sure that they have job and and shelter. I don't mind pay extra TAX FOR THIS CAUSE. I have been praying for these men and women in uniform and wish to help if there's anything I can do. They deserve tangible and untangible support.
My heart bleed to see men and women suffering in these rehabe centers. I wish we could feel the same heart break for men women and children suffering in the other parts of the world they are also humen ...Do we pray for them too.....Just a thought....
This place really is for the brave. Bush and his cronies should be banned from this sacred facility. Please provide an address where donations can be made.
I pray and give thanks each and everyday to these military personnel for the sacrifices they have made and to have Bush show them off like he cares is appalling to me not only as an American but as a mother of a soldier currently serving in Iraq.  May God be with them all and may this Bush circus be over soon.
Being a Vietnam veteran, I can understand some of what they are going through, and the sacrifice they are making.  God bless each and all US military personnel scattered across the globe.
Thanks for the article about our service members. Thank you Pres. Bush for encouraging them. Thank God for those of you who realized the sacrifice our service men & women make, reqardless of their political beliefs. Yes, our government should do more for them; I definitely will.
I can't find the words to express my respect, gratitude and admiration for the men and women at Intrepid. Thank you to each and everyone of you.  Your bravery and fortitude and determination are the backbone of America.  I am humbled by your courage and "grit."  It is an inspiration to the rest of us and personally gives me a standard to aspire to in my own life.  I don't support this war but I support every American who is involved in it. and their families...you are in my prayers today and ALWAYS.

Please post the information needed to send cards and mail to these warriors.
I totally agree with S.W. James of Alabama.
I don't understand how the President or his so called
aids can look them self in the mirror without feeling
ashamed, but then that old saying "money talks" fits
just perfect here.  This President is a sad sad case of leadership.
I am a proud US Navy "brown water sailors" who fought in the Mekong Delta until I received my career ending injuries in Vietnam during my short tour in 1968-71. My boat was sunk, and my mates and Chief were killed, and I am is still 100% disabled, thought I can now walk with two canes instead of all the time in a wheelchair or scooter. But I still believe in the war against International Communism we were fighting against then.

Today, I can only say to you proud men and women; keep America winning the war on terrorism!!! If folks forget that Iraq was building a super gun to lob shells into Israel (HE, Chemical, and Saddam hoped Biological, and hopefully nuclear), or forget the number of missles that Saddam launched into Israel during the first Gulf War. I think we need to remind them. Now Iran seems to be almost on a suicidal run to collide with the western nuclear superpowers. I hope, and pray, that this does not come to pass.

To the troops,

You've spent long tours, and I know that your sacrifice went to the highest of causes, that is replenishing the tree of Liberty. It's damn hard, I know it first person, and you are doing it in the land of not just IEDs but eveydodies old land mines. Both sides in the Iran/Iraq war dropped them from cargo planes. That is very bad karma. Just pray the rosary, each watch and keep God as you understand Him in mind each step you take, and call up the engineers no matter how tired he bastards are. It's your foot or leg on the line. Let the engineers bitch, that's part of their job. ;-P

    Happy Thanksgiving.

     God Bless you all.
Unlike the victims of 9-11 that were burned, crushed or leapt to their deaths during the attacks, these brave men and woman volunteered to be the defense against such an abomination occurring on our mainland again. My heart breaks for the injuries and deaths they have suffered. There should be NO limit to the monies appropriated for the care and rehabilitation of these heroes. We could never show our appreciation for their volunteering to defend us against such a sick and depraved ideological enemy. I would love to be out of Afghanistan and Iraq as much as anyone else as to no longer continue sacrificing our personnel in a war that has devolved into a civil conflict. We cannot deny the undisputed fact that we have not been attracted within our borders since we decided to give the enemy "home field advantage." If we get out before these animals are no longer a threat, we will regret it. Terrorists will not kill only the people who supported this war and President Bush. They will kill the war protesters and their loved ones as well right here where we live, work and play. Wars cost exorbanent amounts of money, but in a sorry way, it is an investment in our peace of mind. Salute to the military men and woman and thank you for what you have done for me and my loved ones without even the vantage of knowing me. Gods grace and love to you all...
