Heroin drug targets middle school students

Posted: Friday, November 09, 2007 9:03 PM

DALLAS – I interviewed a 10th grader the other day, and I can’t get her story out of my head.

Fifteen-year-old girls usually don’t have much to say that adults would consider "newsworthy." I should know – my oldest daughter is 15, and while I care deeply about the mundane dramas in her life, I doubt reporters would line up to relay those dramas to the world.

But Mariela Torres’ story shook me. She’s a cute, bright girl. Everybody seems to like her.

It was one of Mariela’s friends who first offered her "cheese" when she was just 13 years old. Mariela had never used any drugs before that day. "Cheese," she was told, wasn’t really a drug – it would just make her feel happy.

Here’s what Mariela didn’t know.

Cheese is the slang name for a mixture of black tar heroin and Tylenol PM. The substances are combined and come out looking much like parmesan cheese. The resulting product is sold for as little as $2 per hit.

Mariela Torres, a 15-year-old Dallas 10th grader, who was addicted to the mixture of black tar heroin and Tylenol PM called "cheese."

Kids in the Dallas-area are buying "cheese" with their lunch money, according to media reports. They’re snorting the stuff up their noses – often at school – and dying in alarming numbers, according to the Dallas County medical office.

A recent study by the Dallas Independent School district determined that more than 5,000 kids have tried cheese. More than two dozen have died of overdoses. Most, like Mariela, first take the drug in middle school.

That’s shocking. Middle school students are being targeted by drug dealers and turned into heroin addicts before they reach high school.

Getting treatment
The lucky ones, like Mariela, find treatment. After more than a year of use, she was put through detox, then more than three months of rehab.

I visited the rehab center Mariela attended. It was filled with kids. The average age is 15, but there were heroin addicts there as young as 12. It’s heartbreaking and infuriating.

Today, Mariela is drug free, but she knows people who are still using.

"It makes me want to go do it again," she told me. "But I know I shouldn’t, because I don’t want to go back through the same things I was going through."

Mariela is a good kid. I could tell that immediately. She smiles freely and looks you in the eye when she speaks. She has her whole life ahead of her. She’s even thinking of trying out for her high school soccer team.

I pray she makes it through her recovery and get the chance to play.

Thank God Mariela is off.  she is very pretty inside and out you can see that for yourself.  I only hope and wish that her friends stop using the drug because they may try to dupe her into the drug scene again.  Mariela, stay always true to yourself and pray that the drug dealers get caught and stop ruining other peoples lives and their own.
Parents who are drug dealers get their kids placed in Special Education.  Then the child can sell drugs in school without fear of punishment.

I remember one who sold drugs for several years in a school of about 300 students - 6 to 12.  When his younger brother entered the same school, he turned the business over to him.  He then damanaged as much of the school as he could - then quit.  He made deliveries of drugs to his brothers locker.

The younder brother sold tainted drugs during the summer.  A teen who bought those drugs died.  He was sent to a detention center and did not return to school.  Had this happened in school, he would not have faced any punishment at all.

Americans deserve the kind of education system they now have.

Contact your representative.  Demand that they get control of Special Education.  Demand that they put the classroom and the school back into the control of teachers and principals.  As it is - the school is in control of the most aggressive parents and students.

The next time you decide to "tell a teacher off" remember it is people like you who are responsible for an educational system that doesn't work.
Thank you for the "early warning". We who reside in the "cold country" , are slightly behind the times as regards threats to the stability of life in our schools. Living in a rural area perhaps does insulate us from the facts of life in the urban areas of our country, and your article brings home the the ever-present need for vigilance regarding our kids' welfare. Your "heads-up' will, hopefully, prevent disasters such as you've outlined. Thank you again, and keep up the good work.

Why do the political leaders in this country close their eyes to the drug problem in schools. Maybe it hasn't involved their children yet, if it did then the drug dealers would be treated like the sex offenders. Put their names on a national registry, send out notices of addresses. If one lived near me I would want to know, wouldn't you?
The worst of drug use in america is yet to come. Low paying jobs, expensive houseing, what does a teen who has no chance of college have to look forward to. Working at walmart?
i really feel sad and sorry for the kids in todays age. i dont remember it being this bad when i was in school 15 years ago.
Funny the longer the War on Drugs goes on the younger the average hard drug user becomes. To think we spent the last century trying to stop adults from using. We spent billions to put those people in jail and now all their kids who grew up without them have become users, and then their kids who grew up with user parents become users. The more we fight it, the worse it becomes.
The word infuriating fits perfectly... how unbelievalby sad is this story...
Afghanistan produced a bumper crop of Opium this harvest season, so the market place (the USA and elsewhere) has easier access and lower cost for the drug.  Its no wonder,  The war on drugs has been replaced by the war on terror and our children are the casualties.  The crisis at our borders results directly in this easy flow of illegal drugs and illegal immigrants into the "Homeland".  So much for "Homeland Security.
I am so proud of Mariela for staying drug free. My brother passed away 6 yrs. ago, he was a heroin addict for 15 yrs., from 19 till his death at 33, he was HIV positive. The pain and torture these people go through with addiction is heart breaking. Mariela, addictions progress, you are a beautiful girl, go visit some people who have a few years of addiction and you will think they are many years older than they are, this does not reverse. I hope you will continue the path you are on and stay drug free for it is a wasted life.
People that push drugs at this level should simply be executed or locked up for life and I mean LIFE.  Sounds harsh ...... I've got three kids and I have no simpathy for this kind of people praying on my children in this way.
Are you kidding me? You write this like it's news. This has been going on for years. Thank goodnes the child featured was such a cutie. You would never have heard from this writer otherwise.

"That’s shocking. Middle school students are being targeted by drug dealers and turned into heroin addicts before they reach high school."

This is the root of what drives this problem. There are/is an organization(s) that know this "business" and are simply creating their customer base, hence the harmless kid-oriented slang "cheese". It is wrong, it is evil. However, until it is attacked from this premise and begins affecting a more "visible" segment of the population probably little to nothing will be done. Shame on us; this has the potential to become the new "meth".
Dealers who target children like this should have to dig their own graves and then get a bullet in the back of their head, this should be done publicly and I'm sure that the selling of drugs to children would drop to near zero.
And i pray equally. However, (and in support of your of your prayers), It is within our powers to make choices. Be strong, make the right choice......
ITS SO SAD THAT OUR COUNTRY HAS BECOME SO FILLED WITH DRUGS. THIS HOWEVER IS JUST ONE DRUG OUT OF MANY THAT ARE BEING OFFERED TO OUR CHILDREN TODAY. CRYSTAL-METH NOW COMES IN DIFFERENT FLAVORS AND ALSO IN CANDY POP ROCKS. IT IS ALSO OFFERED TO GRADE SCHOOL CHILDREN. WE AS PARENTS AND TEACHERS NEED TO EDUCATE OURSELVES SO WE CAN EDUCATE OUR CHILDREN TO KEEP THEM SAFE.
To make illegal drugs too expensive, all crimes commited while using should be treated as holders in due course, letting the user esentially free and transferring the crime to the seller who could then share it with his source and so on, right upto a financier of the operation.
Those of you that think the U.S. is doing all it can do to prevent these things from happening are Living in a dream world ! Doesn't anybody remember anti-buse from the 70,s. If the government wanted to end drug abuse they could ! All they have to do is contaminate the supply with anti-buse! It is all about the MONEY !
Make shur your Government nerds approve!
Chease, Well a bigger problem is with RX drugs. The samething as Herion. Oxycotin, Roxxy codone and the list goes on.What about the average adult that gets hooked and has a family and insurance. aaHey Boss I have to take 3 months to get clean, sorry kids dad has to go away.Who will pay the bills? help take care of the family. Pepole that want to get clean can not unless the Goverment heps. But no we have to many problems in other countries to take care of our own. Go watch SICKO
This is a new way to get hooked into heroin and parents need to find out what their kids are up to.  They can be using and seem so happy and fine.  Then they get too much, or have a reaction and throw up in their sleep, and die.  I know my son did this at age 21.  He started using when friends gave him morphine at school.  I would search his room and body and be more careful of his friends if I could go back.  I was too  help naive and too trusting.  I would put him into treatment and he would leave or quit.  I would take him to church every week but he was still addicted.  It's hard but you have to keep trying to get them into a 12 step program; over and over if necessary.  I hope this can help some other parents to realize how serious this is; you can lose your child so double your efforts and don't give up.
Excellent column on excellent topic. Thank you for the informatioh. Wake up America.
Thank God for Jesus Christ and my hats off to you young lady, please keep up the good fight of faith. you know it's really sad to here about so many others hooked on that stuff but on the other hand it's truly a blessing to hear that mariela is getting her life back together, and oh by the way i'm Jess and i've been healed from my old addiction, which was crack,,,,today i work with teen challenge international, working with with men ages 18 on up and i want to know that it's a beautiful thing to see a man or woman change right before your eyes, the ones that people said would never make it,,.
These pigs that are targeting our children need to be strung up by their toenails and stoned with really big stones.

I'm glad Mariela got the help she needed and I hope she can use her experience to help others in the same situation.

This is tragic! I don't know how our government can, in good conscience, casually look the other way while the poppy fields of Afghanistan feed this terrible disease. Our Air Force should  immediately, without reservation or excuse, use defoliant or napalm to wipe out this world-wide threat to humanity which robs our children of their youth and dignity. Anyone found guilty of growing or cultivating opium should receive a death sentence.
if you feel like using again you must get a faith group or church group small number of people who you can call and talk. From what i have read it is not as addictive as tobbacco but a new faith group is a possible solution for someone so young and has so much to lose in the long life you have ahead of you.
Great NAFTA is working, we finally have real free trade, free speech, free lunches, open borders, and be sure to let the trucks come on up from mexico and have full interstate access. ACLU and open border advocate's keep up the good work...
More and more, I believe in the death penalty for anyone who sells any drugs to children.  Actually, to anyone of any age.  This is unconscionable, that our children are being targeted like this.  Worse yet, kids are being recruited as pushers.  The drug war is here in a huge way, and we must fight it or lose our future, our children, and civilization as we know it.  Between this and terrorism, I fear for the future of our country.  The wars must be fought, difficult as they are, because the future of our country is worth it.
Everyone needs to talk to their kids, especially those Mariela's age about drugs & sex.  As a nurse I have seen 11 & 12 yr olds having babies, coming in as rape victims, drunk or high on drugs, even married having their 2nd babies-which boggles my mind even more in today's world.  These kids are the future of our world--do it right people--TALK to them, teach them right--oh by the way--don't forget the Bible & His teachings.  Then we will have a good world tmr.  Thanx for listening to me.  God bless you all & our world.
Its time to make dealing drugs a capital offense..first timers, a year in prison;  second offense, mandatory trial within 24 hours, and mandatory execution if convicted within 24 hours. Lets get rid of this scum. Once and for all.
Children's Tylenol: the gateway drug.

From there... children's nyquil, Flinstone's Vitamins, caffeine, nicotine, amphetamine, LSD, THC (or visa-versa), boomers, 'ludes, heroin (again, in no certain order)...

We are a drug society, evidenced by the number of Starbuck's nation wide.

De-criminalize, regulate, control, tax (perhaps using tobacco as a guideline)... To not do so is to ignore a revenue stream which would support the operation of our government, while spending even more money in support of a policy which costs us tax-payers multiple-millions of dollars every year.

When are people going to wake up to this incredible lie that has been sold to the voting public for the last (nearly) hundred years? (OK, close to 85... but closer to 100 than to 50, eh?)
Surprising? No.
I am writing from Vancouver, British Columbia and I stumbled upon a used hypodermic needle near some bushes at a local Chevron station in a very upscale part of town. This is getting more and more common here. Used needles can be found just about anywhere AND there's a gang war going on lately, tied to the heroin trade.
A city councilor here recently demanded that Ports Police be reinstated. His demands so far have been rebuffed by the Minister for Public Safety (Mr. Stockwell Day).
Isn't it a wonder that record amounts of heroin are on
the streets these days when heroin production in Afghanistan is at an all-time high and the government sells our ports infrastructure to Dubai Ports World and the government then refuses to adequately police the ports? Something rotten is going on.
The government wants to go all-out with punishing drug
addicts yet do little or nothing to prevent drugs from
entering through our ports. I believe this is being done on purpose.
u know, its kind've a given that you don't use stuff taht makes u "happy". im an 8th grader and even i know better than that. i know some stupid kids but if u snort cheese that makes u happy and ur friends say its not a drug. whoa, u need rehab in the first place
Here in North East Ohio the plague is cheap Afghan heroin also pushed along with prescription pain killers and tranquilizers. What is doubly infuriating is that budgets for treatment and law interdiction are being cut while billions are funneled down a bottomless rat hole called Iraq!
stories like these just break my freaken heart.  I've lost a brother in the donwfall of society, and it really hurts me when i realize these kind of things are happening all over the country and the world.  We as adults should step up and do something more about this crisis... Think more about giving then receiving from this world and we wall all be allright.
When are we going to wise up and admit that drug dealers , all of them , are murderers and start treating them as such?
Yes this is infuriating. We need to get hard on drug dealers. I say this- if they are caught selling this poison to middle school kids its real simple- capital punishment. Period. No age minimums, yeah it will be real ugly at first until you break them and send a message. To be honest you can march 'em down to the river and put two .45s in the back of their head Lavrentiy Beria style for all I care. This is inexcusable and as a society we flat out shouldn't tolerate it, or go soft on it. Nothing is more important than our children, and this vermin needs to be stopped and wiped out.
this is crazy! where are the parents? all these kids can't be from broken homes, it makes me want to break down and cry for these children
This is shocking...when will the USA get serious and take action against the many serious threats we face:
drug abuse and addiction, rampant crime, illegal immigration, child abuse and exploitation, etc.

It seems if our elected political leaders have their head's in the sand.  We need action now, to save our society.
Who are the main types of people that have been caught/arrested for dealing "cheese" ? What are the penalties if arrested for dealing "cheese"? Has anyone (doctors) spoken of the additional health hazards of ingesting large quantities of Tylenol, liver/kidney damage?
It seems that all these questions go unanswered. Parents whose children abuse drugs like "cheese" are obviously not watching thier kids close enough. If a parent is too dense to recognize new or odd behaviour in thier children, then those parents are really to blame and should be held accountable legally in the event of a childs death or overdose.
If you as a parent suspect abuse, make your child take a drug test. If positive then immediate action should be taken. Isolate the child from suspect friends. Do not let them have freedom to roam about the city. Chauffer them to and from school and work, if they work. Take away thier cell phone. I could go on but hopefully, my point has been made. Is this all too much trouble for a parent? Compare it to the trouble of a dead son or daughter.
I speak from experience, having fooled my parents for years only to have to deal with drug addiction as an adult. Drugs cost me dearly. I wish my parents hadn't been so gullible and in, really, a state of denial anyway. They preferred to believe that it wasn't/couldn't happen, to having to take appropriate action. I overdosed three times as an adolescent and am only here by the grace of God. I should be dead three times over. My parents would have been largely to blame, I was only 15 years old when I first overdosed. I know that individual resposibility in anyone is important, but how individually responsible can a 15 year old be?
When are we going to realize that the prohibition of drugs just make it easier for these people to target our children.Wake up America! Take away the big profits you will take away most of this type of thing. We must also admit that this is a human condition (to alter our conciousness)and we must make every attempt to minimize the damage to society.Prohibition puts those choices in the drug dealers hands.
Heroin is a REALLY horrible drug to get hooked on, and I've done them all! It's "cheap"  and you need a "TINY" amount at first, and then comes a day where you didn't get your "hit" and as the day goes on...to get "SICK" and feel like garbage in a way you couln't begin to imagine.....and all you have to do is a "hit" and those HORRIBLE feelings will all go away in miniutes, everythings all better.....and thats when you realize YOUR HOOKED!! And if you don't want to experiance the worst pain of your life, you better have the stuff to fix it....problem is opiates are a drug that your body builds up a TOLERANCE VERY VERY FAST and so you need more and more and more, then "sniffing" is like wasting alot of it so you begin "banging"  (needles) and from there...hep c and hiv I've been drug and alch. free for 1 yr and 9 mos
and it was a LONG HARD road but I'll tell you what...I'm in my 30's and I couldn't immagine having to go through what I've gone through at "middle school age" that just tears my heart out at the thought of it...growing up is hard enough, school has plenty of "problems" to deal with...but to throw drug addiction on there with "satan's poison" WOW I have to say they are ALL in my prayers and as a community we ALL are responsible for the well-being of these kids!
Forget the "war on terror". Why haven't we spent the time and money attacking those that all too often successfully attack our children in our schools, our streets and our towns; and on defending those whom they target?
And who should we thank for these drugs? It couldn't be peaceful religious peoples of the middle east, could it? That is where the eastern poppy grows. That is the source of heroin. It has become their traditional source of wealth since addiction became a business.
This is so crazy and out of control.  I remember back in my day when the worst people were doing was drinking, smoking regular cigarettes and you heard of the occasional people using weed.  It is so sad to think drug dealers need to target such young kids who do not know any better.

This story surely should open some parents eyes.  It is good to see that Mariela has changed her life, but so sad it happened so young.

I hate seeing the anti-smoking ads on the TV, there should be more focus on illegal drugs.  I always said when I was a teenager, that if my kids only smoked regular cigarettes then I would be happy.  Sad but true in this day and age.
God Bless you Maria. I hope you find the strength to stay sober. As a 40 year plus drug user, I can tell you life is much better when your part of it. Stay strong
THANKS FOR THE STORY,
AS A RECOVERING ALCOHOLIC IT IS IMPORTANT FOR ME TO KNOW WHAT THE KIDS ARE DOING. MY 18 AND 11 YEAR OLD GIRLS NEED DAD TO INFORM THEM OF THE DANGERS THAT ARE OUT THERE. EDUCATION IS CRITICAL.
LIFE IS ALWAYS BETTER WITHOUT DRUGS OR ALCOHOL.
Ok isn't it "REALLY" time to get serious about drugs, are kids, etc.

This shouldn't be happening, lets get the people responsible for this and try them the past the full extent of the law.

In other words, go to trial, sentence, throw away the key.
Peer pressure is such a difficult thing to struggle with.  And the urge to pick up again can be overwhelming, but losing the hard work it takes to get clean can be devastating.  Good luck Mariela, stay clean just for today.
