Heroin drug targets middle school students

Posted: Friday, November 09, 2007 9:03 PM

DALLAS – I interviewed a 10th grader the other day, and I can’t get her story out of my head.

Fifteen-year-old girls usually don’t have much to say that adults would consider "newsworthy." I should know – my oldest daughter is 15, and while I care deeply about the mundane dramas in her life, I doubt reporters would line up to relay those dramas to the world.

But Mariela Torres’ story shook me. She’s a cute, bright girl. Everybody seems to like her.

It was one of Mariela’s friends who first offered her "cheese" when she was just 13 years old. Mariela had never used any drugs before that day. "Cheese," she was told, wasn’t really a drug – it would just make her feel happy.

Here’s what Mariela didn’t know.

Cheese is the slang name for a mixture of black tar heroin and Tylenol PM. The substances are combined and come out looking much like parmesan cheese. The resulting product is sold for as little as $2 per hit.

Mariela Torres, a 15-year-old Dallas 10th grader, who was addicted to the mixture of black tar heroin and Tylenol PM called "cheese."

Kids in the Dallas-area are buying "cheese" with their lunch money, according to media reports. They’re snorting the stuff up their noses – often at school – and dying in alarming numbers, according to the Dallas County medical office.

A recent study by the Dallas Independent School district determined that more than 5,000 kids have tried cheese. More than two dozen have died of overdoses. Most, like Mariela, first take the drug in middle school.

That’s shocking. Middle school students are being targeted by drug dealers and turned into heroin addicts before they reach high school.

Getting treatment
The lucky ones, like Mariela, find treatment. After more than a year of use, she was put through detox, then more than three months of rehab.

I visited the rehab center Mariela attended. It was filled with kids. The average age is 15, but there were heroin addicts there as young as 12. It’s heartbreaking and infuriating.

Today, Mariela is drug free, but she knows people who are still using.

"It makes me want to go do it again," she told me. "But I know I shouldn’t, because I don’t want to go back through the same things I was going through."

Mariela is a good kid. I could tell that immediately. She smiles freely and looks you in the eye when she speaks. She has her whole life ahead of her. She’s even thinking of trying out for her high school soccer team.

I pray she makes it through her recovery and get the chance to play.

I wouldn't mind too much if scum drug dealers like this were shot on sight.
This has been going on for a long time I am suprised
it is only making it to the mainstream news now!!
More than likely your child knows or has tried it, NO
matter what state you live in. Most of the kids keep
it under their fingernails,if your childs nails are
dirty and they don't work on things or in the garden
Tell them to clean those nails now and see what they
do with it. Of course they can still have it in bag
or other container but under the nails is less of a
tip off to adults who used to keep their stash of
illicit pharms in baggies or those cardboard holders!!
Of course most kids never turn into junkies but it is too fine of a line and every parent can be more involved with their child and the places they go. If
your child is nodding out or being really cheery one
hour and then groggy the next, You should be suspicous
and investigate further and educate yourself before
throwing any accusations!!  Erowid is a good starting
point to understand what is happening to your kids,
how to better deal with it and what to look for.
WOW I had no idea that this was going on. Thank you so much for taking the time to share this with the public. As a mother of a middle school student this is vital information. We need to do more to educated the public so the use of cheese, dusting, and other drug that parents over look can be stopped. These children are our future and why would a person take their quality of life away from these bright young children.
If only society would take notice of this story now and not when it reaches the Brit. Spears stage.
These cruel drug makers ought to be given the death sentence if caught, for trying to make these young innocent students addicted to their disgraceful products. Flyers and ads should be posted on campus to educate these young folks about the effects of this heroin.
This is just disturbing. More and more kids are getting into drugs and alcohol earlier and earlier these days. To think the drug dealers and pushers would stoop to this level is infuriating.
I am at a lose for words after reading this. With 3 young children myself, how do I protect them? Our mission overseas is important, but we must must spend more money protecting our children.

Kids need to be taught less about individual drugs and more about what addiction does, how it affects the body and the mind, how an intoxicated person looks and acts, and the impact on family and friend relationships.  To teach them about what Marijuana, Crack, etc., look like and their individual effects only spikes their curiousity into trying these drugs.

Show them an intoxicated person on video at a DWI arrest and how bad a driver they were.  Show them a person psychotic from methamphetamines.  Show them the testimony of people in recovery, etc., but don't talk about any specific drugs.

The most important lesson:  If it doesn't come from a doctor or a pharmacy shelf - DON'T TAKE IT!!!

Another thing:  They say marijuana is a "gateway" drug to things harder.  Well I say cigarettes are a gateway to "smoking" something in the first place.  If you can keep a child away from cigarettes, you probably can keep them off drugs altogether.  Quit smoking yourself and save your cigarette money for your children's education.

This is certainly scary especially for our part of the world down in South Texas. I had not heard about this new drug which is proving a disaster for our young  generation. GOD HELP US!
your story made me cry!! it is a shame that our children and grandchildren are subjected to the cruel world of heroin. we need more people like you to make people aware of the problem and i appreciate your reporting on these types of stories!! I hope Mariela makes a complete recovery also.
I'm a believer in the concept of due process but
this is a case is where I step away from that civilized, democratic ideal. This is a case where you hope to God,as a police officer, you would have the good fortune to catch the rat bastards in the act of making that evil poison to sell to children and end their existance with a bullet to the brain.
It is heartbreaking to know these things are  getting to our young people. More than 30 years ago, when I was in my teens I got involved in using. it started with LSD and marijuana then progresses to THC and on my 18th birthday to heroin then onto meth. It tool me about 20 years to finally make the choices to stop the madness. I lost 6 years of my life in prison by the time I was 19 for smuggling and kept on using after prison for another 10 years. It was hell on earth and I thank God to this very day that I turned my life over to Jesus. It has been a struggle at times, but with other people around me who are there for me to support my decision, and my growing faith in God, I have been clean for 20 years. I am thankful everyday for what I have and I spend my time to tell others that come across my path that they can  also get free and stay free. You can't do it alone, you need others to stand with you, but you must choose to do it for yourself, First. I know what the addiction is and I just got word yesterday a good friend overdoses last week. I am going to his funeral on Monday, he was a good young man and it didn't have to end this way. Don't give up, make that call, this is you we are talking about and you are worth it!
This reminds of a story I read about a few years ago where teens and preteens in Texas where using heroin, and had no idea because it was referred to as chivas (which is spanish for heroin). It came in pill form and if you asked these kids if they would ever try heroin all answered no....but yet they would try chivas. Perhaps these kids need to be educated a bit more about the reality of substance abuse...it doesn't matter what you call it hard drugs are hard drugs. This "cheese" thing is sickening, its bad enough meth dealers have been targeting middle school kids for the past 15 years.
Mr. Bush, we go to fight Al-Quaeda and the Taliban and now the production and export of heroin has increased in Afganistan since our insurgency.  92% of ALL heroin worldwide is harvested and controlled by our enemy. Can your administration do anything right.  How about our young people? This is how this crazy war on terroism is affecting our young people.
Best wishes to Mariela.  I wish the best to the other children not so lucky as her.
I can only shake my head at the people who would sell such to children.

It serves to remind me that those who would get and keep others addicted, whether to drugs that kill or to foreign oil that some must die for, have no souls.
Wow, I can't imagine being addicted to heroin at 13. I am a recovering heroin addict and I wasn't introduced to heroin until I was 33.I was addicted for 5 years until I developed endocarditis which is an infection of the heart from my IV use of heroin.I spent 6 weeks in a nursing home hooked to an antibiotic IV.I came close to dying from that. While I was there I was put on methadone to keep me from withdrawing, which my heart was too weak to withstand.I had been to detox and rehabs before that and still went back to using.Only when I was put on methadone was I able to stay clean.I have been clean for 3 years now. Many people think that methadone maintenance is just substituting one drug for another, which is not true. With proper doctor supervision and being at the correct dosage, there is no high from the methadone,it takes away the cravings and keeps me from feeling any withdrawal symptoms.I get no "high" from the methadone,it has been the only thing, along with counseling that has kept me from relapsing.I know how hard it is to get off the drugs,it was hard in my mid thirties,I can't imagine how tough it is at 13,14,15...Kids shouldn't have to deal with drug addiction, their teens are supposed to be for school, friends, fun etc. This world keeps getting crazier and it is just so wrong that young teens are going through this.My heart and prayers go out to all those struggling with addiction.Stay strong and talk to someone, get help. It's fun at first but it always leads to sickness, lying, stealing, jail and makes a living nightmare of your life.Get help now before it's too late and you ruin your life along with all your friends' and familys'.They hurt most of all, take it from someone who knows,I regret using everyday,at least I have a second chance now.Don't throw your chances away, you only get so many and it's not all it's cracked up to be.
This story is alarming and heartbreaking. It's another example of how low people will go to make a buck. This story should be front page news and on every television news outlet. Parents and children need to know and see what happens to people who become addicted to drugs. It's not a pretty sight. Thank God Mariela got the help she needed.
I think this story is very sad but at the same time it makes me very angry.  We are going to eventually have at least one generation of addicts if not two.  The police ned to stop the problem at the schools.  Someone is selling this at school.  Maybe find the youngest looking officers and put them in the schools so they can actually come in contact with the other users and find there way to the source.  We need to start taking drastic measures for drastic situations and this definately is a drastic situation. I wish the young lady in the article my best in her continuing recovery and I thank her for being willing to let you cover this issue with her.  Everbody needs to be very supportive of her right now because she is very vulnerable right now.  Best of luck Mariela!!!!!!!
drug dealers are domestic terrorists. they are destroying the fabric of our society and as such they should be treated like terrorists. they don't care if they destroy some teenagers life so I have no problem with the police shooting them just like any other threat to our way of life.
Wow! As the father of an eight year old girl it makes me sick to think that I need to worry about what her friends will be trying and attempting to get her to try in the next few years.  Another cause more worthy of the governments attention and money than places 1000's of miles away.
WOW! I never knew there was a drug named cheese that existed i never even heard of the ingredients they use and mix together and i'm well aware of alot of drugs, however i'm glad you wrote that and i really hope she continues to stay awawy from that, and  hopefully all of the other kids will realize that they need to get help as well!!
I think we all may be too shocked to respond. My first thought is that we should "surge" attack these pushers now!
I am very glad to see that she is doing well now.  It is a true shame that the kids in our area are introduced to such things.  I remember when the biggest event on the weekends or after school was getting on our bikes and going hiking as we called it after mom had packed us a lunch.  We could go anywhere on our bikes and just have a good time. Now we cant even let our kids out of the house .  Dear God what has happened to our world..?
Many people that quit using heroin and go through rehab will strt to use again even if they haven't used for 10-15 years. It is that addicting and the dealers know it.
In 2007 the three biggest problems in school are muders, drugs, and rape. In 1957 the biggest problems where running in the halls, smoking cigarettes, and cutting classes. What a difference 50 years make. My grandfather used to not lock the house door, and he would keep the key of his American car  in the ignition.
Case in point:  if drugs were regulated, taxed, and monitored like alcohol and tobacco, it would be harder for children to access as well as striking a mortal wound on the black market of the drug industry.  Just a thought.  Know it's the most popular idea, but would we have methamphetamine if amphetamines were easier to get for adults who want to abuse themselves?
Anyone with multiple offenses for dealing to children should get the death penalty.  We are way too lieniente on adults praying on our kids.
Stop blaming the drug dealers and start talking to your children parents, the dealers don't bring the drugs into the country. parents are drinking at home, popping pills, and blame rap music for all the woes of society. Even the silly notion of making dealing a capital offense shows how out of touch parents are. When you show your kids the right way even in the presence of a table full of drugs they will be able to resist simple.kids of this generation are under supervised, spoiled, have lots of free time on their hands. and if you want dealers to stop try creating better education systems, provide proper paying jobs, then dealing wont be an option
and isn't it funny...since our wars in afghanistan and iraq, and our illegal immigrants from latin america, the heroin grown (afghanistan) and smuggled in (through mexico) has skrocketed!
and usage of this black tar has skyrocketed...thanks bush and the dea...they are both corrupt...and support this black market for their wars...anyone remember ol' Pres. Reagan and his coke for guns Iran/Contra scandal?????
Now bush says no $ for anything...all been spent on wars!!

...shame on america and americans!
Where were her parents? Drug awareness starts at home. Her parents should have been talking to her about drugs, along with the things kids do to convenience other what are and are not drugs. Government? Please. It's enough of a nanny state as it is. These are PERSONAL choices and should be dealt with by parents.
For all you clueless people,Afghan heroin goes to Europe, not the US.Most of our heroin comes from Colombia and Mexico. As for the "drug problem" being something new, heroin and cocaine were once sold in every pharmacy at the turn of the century. The 12 step industry and it's "addiction is a disease" fairy tale is the main reason they get lots of new cult members who spout the AA slogans as if that does anything. The only real treatment for drug use is to STOP.What the 12 step industry doesn't want you to know is that most people who quit do it on their own, as opposed to AA's rate of 5%.
i  think every kids in schools who use drugs also sell drugs to their friends , so it is like the insurance agents system . they need the money to buy named brand shoes ,cloths and now I PHONE.
our lives are now control by corporations ,they tell us what to buy ,when to buy and what to wear, and the fashion trends they have full control of our lives.our culture is shaped buy these corporations to a point that we just have to look certain way or look great (fashion world's point of view.)Our lives use to focus on happiness, not any more.you just have to look great  and it dosen't matter how you achieve it,sell drugs or steal.our dailylives are just daily shows, we are living our daily lives on stage and let every body judge us from every angle, and worse we respond to them.we should teach our kids that they don't have to be popular they just have to be good.
Oh yeah,I keep my stash under my fingernails. Why, I can hold a whole bag of dope under all ten of them! (It's also so easy to get it out from under them without wasting any of it.)Well, time to head back to Mars, where everyone believes that one.
Send this to Senator Orin Hatch UTAH. This out of touch fool authored the DREAM BILL.  The drugs come from in large part from Ilegal Mexicans that receive FEE WAVERS, OR NO TUITION FEES,FOR SCHOOLS, DRIVE $30,000.00 autos to schools as a result of their profits... Fools like Hatch wants to givem them free citizenship at the expense of the American Working Class...

My daughter is seven and lives in Tomball Texas,a suburb of Houston ....  I live in Las Vegas , and I am terrified for her
Im an addict in recovery and a single parent and want to say that drug addiction is a painful, degrading waste no matter what the age of the user.Children are under so much peer pressure to be cool and seeking acceptance, others left while their parents pursue their own interests, single parents that cant be everywhere and have to work to support the family, etc.Drug dealers will target anyone they believe vulnerable, they dont discriminate against anyones money and have no conscience about destroying lives.Putting them away for life is too easy ..life,yes !!However,im in support of having them face the horror of this poison.Mandatory service where they have to confront babies born into addiction, addicts wasting away praying for death in rehabs, maybe a routine visit to the morgue?Maybe this sounds harsh .. but no more harsh that the lives and families that are being destroyed and torn apart by this travesty.Mariella,God bless and keep you forever in his care.If only our country spent a quarter of the effort and money looking out for our own people as they do interfering in other countries affairs,we might find a solution.
I agree with the writer who said drug dealers should be shot on site. We've tolerated this sort of thing in our society much too long!

If you visit web.amenclinic.com, you will find a very graphically informative ppt. of the effect of drugs on the adolescent brain.  Show it to your children. This should motivate anyone to safeguard their precious assets.  I have no ties to that website, but happened upon it, and I'm glad that I did!

People should wake up in this country, but apparently, they never will, as evidenced by the present presidential catastrophe-Calamity George.  How do you think that drugs entire into this country by the plane and ship load in the first place?  Immigrants?  Ignorant!
I WORRY THAT MARIELLA SHOULD HAVE MORE TIME IN REHAB.  3 MONTHS IS NOT ENOUGH. SHE HAS BEEN  PUT BACK IN THE SAME ENVIRONMENT AND IT IS TOO EASY TO RELAPSE. MAY GOD KEEP HER  STRONG.
Let me add violence; my son was 12 yrs old when his neck was fractured turning our lives upside down why did this happen because hes white; in a hispanic environment where the Girl who did this got away with it her family on welfare owning a house and several cars; we cant afford insurance are we able to collect medical our funds have run out my son still needs a Dr.s care why should we pay for those who abuse the systems? You tell me why?
Derek Weimer, Burlington, Kentucky (November 10, 2007 3:08 AM) You really have a problem and need to have your head taken care of, Killing is not the answer, You really need to do some research on where these drugs are coming from and who's supplying them, look into your own Government, The CIA etc... Ask yourself this, Why did Heroin overflow during the Vietnam war? Why was there a massive increase of Cocaine flow when the CIA And U.S. Government was in South America? Now were in Afghanistan and once again the Heroin is flowing around the world, You know the poppy fields the U.S. said it was going to destroy? Remember Clintons brother was in jail for cocaine distribution (you going to shoot him)?  You want to fix this problem then educate yourself and your children, Read! follow the money trail, it all leads to the Bush/Clinton Crime Family. Look into how GHW Bush got the nick name Poppy Bush. There is no war on drugs it's all a scam and you fell for it.
Funny thing is that heroin is the trash left over after making Morphine, Who makes Morphine?  Think about it who throws away the morphine to make heroine only?, NO ONE!, Morphine is way more costly and profitable than heroin. Corporate big business? friend or foe? Pharmaceutical companies? hmmm I wonder who the real culprits are here.
As long as the stock holders are making money off it it wont stop. Shame on US!
Firing squads for anytone caught peddling heroin or meth. How about public singapore-like public rattan cane whippings?? There is NO punishment that's too harsh for anyone targeting the innocent ones. We are in DEEP DEEP trouble people. Hang on to your bootstraps, you haven't seen anything yet.
Letters are useless as the Judicial system releases these heinious punks before a report is filled out, Blame the Judges & the MONEY GREEDY ATTORNEYS, Oh the Judges also get their take !!! Not many but the Dealers & defense knows who & where to have the case tried. Hey    now want schools to give Birth Control to 11 year old females ????? Yes s true..... Am I right you ACLU ????? Would you allow your daughters !!! Sorry but i think you Liberal Bastards would. Time to close jails 7 just use for minor offenders & others put on an Island & let them go at it.
Kill Afganistan! kill the drug dealers!

How about killing the parents that are to busy affording the big houses, fancy cars, prada bags, to care about what thier kids do in the to too much unsupervised time that they have been given, along with the weekly allowance. An idle mind is the devil's playground
Does anyone have a copy of the book "Christiane F.?"
(There's a film of the same name as well.)  All about young teen heroin addiction in Germany, THIRTY YEARS AGO!
It scares me so much to read stories like this. i have a 7 yr old daughter and cringe at the thought of someone every offering her something like that. I have already at her age started talking to her about the dangers of drugs and moveover the ones who might offer them to her. What has happened to this country? Its imploding inside itself.
