Nixon’s unlikely friends: Elvis and Sinatra

WASHINGTON - The National Archives today released 122,800 pages of mostly routine correspondence from the Nixon presidency, none of it apparently earth-shaking but some of it mildly interesting.

One of the more amusing letters was from Nixon aide Egil Krough Jr., thanking a friend for helping secure a Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs badge for Elvis Presley following Presley's 1970 Oval Office meeting with the president.

"We meet many fascinating creatures in this business," Krough wrote, "but I think that meeting between the president and Elvis Presley was one of the most interesting."

Presley pledged his support to the president in the war on drugs, only to die a few years later of a heart attack brought on by years of prescription drug abuse.

Cheney’s 60’s-era DUIs
Another document file contained Vice President Cheney's 1969 government job application in which he acknowledged being charged twice with driving under the influence while a college student in Wyoming.

Cheney was cited for driving under the influence in Cheyenne, Wyo., in November 1962 and in Rock Springs, Wyo., in July 1963.

He forfeited a $150 bond and had his driver's license suspended for 30 days for the first offense and was fined $100 for the second.

Should have listened…
Another folder, on Mark Felt, contained a number of letters to Nixon urging him to appoint Felt the permanent FBI director following the death of J. Edgar Hoover.

"If Mark Felt is appointed as director of the FBI, the citizens of America would be assured the bureau could not be involved in politics," wrote the chief of police of Kodiak, Alaska, in a typical letter of support for Felt.

Had Nixon listened, he would have saved himself a lot of grief – and possibly his presidency. Instead, he chose L. Patrick Gray, and Felt retaliated by becoming "Deep Throat" in the Watergate scandal.

‘Affectionately, Francis’
Frank Sinatra became a Nixon buddy, but early in Nixon’s presidency, his staff debated whether it was appropriate to have Sinatra sing at the White House.

"I am sure that many of our friends in the entertainment field would think it wrong to have a former anti-Nixon person entertain at the White House," presidential aide Dwight Chapin wrote in a 1970 memo.

But Sinatra did perform, and he was soon signing his hand-written notes to the president, "Affectionately, Francis," while Nixon, ever the stiff, signed a photo of the two, "Richard Nixon."

Richard Nixon should have at least signed it "Dick"
I think this is really great.  Presley was a fantastic entertainer and Nixon was probably one of if not our best President in the History of the Unite States
I THINK IT IS MOST INTERESTING ABOUT THE NIXON MARK FELT CONNECTION. JUST GOES TO SHOW NIXON WASN'T NEARLY AS SMART AS HE WANTED PEOPLE TO BELIEVE
I guess the old saying "Politics makes strange bed fellows" is true in more ways than one.
It is mind turning to see how far we have come from watergate. Where the Presendent controled the goverment and now it is the media that rules and shapes our lives.
"I think this is really great.  Presley was a fantastic entertainer and Nixon was probably one of if not our best President in the History of the Unite States"

Thanks, I needed a good laugh . . . Oh, wait--this is better--George W. Bush as a great President, what a hoot.
THE PRICE THIS COUNTRY HAS PAID SINCE NIXON DISHONORED HIS OFFICE IS STILL BEING FELT TODAY AS OUR TWO PARTIES PUT FORTH CANIDATES WHO LACK TRUE LEADERSHIP AND PROVEN TRACK RECORDS AS THEIR FOUNDATION TO HOLD THE OFFICE, AND BUY THERE WAY THERE USING PAYBACK FOR FUNDS GAINED FROM POWERFUL GROUPS AND CORPERATIONS OVER GRASSROOT SUPPORT FROM THE AMERICAN PEOPLE..
I love how much the left hates president NIxon.  He probably is the first president to set the stag for the New World Order, the dream of the Left, and the demise of our Great Nation.
I would rather have Nixon than Bush any day...
well i guess elvis had bad taste in presidents
If it had not been for Nixon, my voting record would have been 9 to 0 for the Democrats. Now I have to live with a near-perfect record, and I do not complain. Richard Nixon is high up in my book, Only two presidents are ahead of him. JFK as number one and WJC is number two, followed closely by RMN.
Imagine if Marilyn Monroe was still alive and Sinatra introduced him to Nixon.  Yowza!  Happy Birthday, dear Dickie!
What does that tell about Felt? To me it says if things are not as he wants, watch out world. And this makes Felt a "little man, if a man at all" not to be trusted. A simple "little back-stabber", that is how HISTORY classifies him if at all.
The White House tape recordings revealed more about
Nixon's personality. His "people skills" were ruined
by his warped personality.
I remember seeing the photo of President Nixon and Elvis shaking hands, and thinking it rather amusing. I've researched Nixon quite a bit, and in one of my books, the author mentions Nixon's lack of familiarity with pop culture, saying about Elvis "He's that entertainer, isn't he?"
if nixon would be president today the twin towers would still be standing, there would be no   alkhaida, iran would be in its place, no iraq mess  american troops would be home , gasoline would probably be under 2 dollars a gallon and all of it done with diplomacy, he was one of the greatest if not the greatest foreigh policy president usa ever had
i think nixon was one of our dumbest presidents ever he is a criminal and he also opened trade with china i think he should have been impeached way before the watergate scandal
An interesting item about the Nixon-Presely meeting was the comment one of Nixon's aides made to the President before ushering in Elvis to the Oval Office was "the KING is here today and wants to meet you". Nixon replied he was not aware any foreign dignataries were in the country today or scheduled to meet him.
AS for VP Cheney... I really don't believe there are many who don't have at least a few insignificant "skeletons" in our closet -particularly during our late teens and early 20s.
Mr. Nixon also mentored by proxy some young soldiers over at Davidson Air Field at Fort Belvoir. I remember one such occasion when there was an unusal midnight meeting between him, Frank Zappa,Wayne Newton and a young Army M.I. officer named B.L. Stackhouse that hailed from West Virginia.
So it does not surprise me at all that Elvis and Frank Sinatra would appear as guest stars in Nixon's world.
Doug:Ask anyone of the many ,many families who have lost loved ones ,murdered by drunk drivers, if driving while drunk is an insignificant skeleton? And this anti social behavior is worse when performed by wild and reckless youngsters. How did he ever get a security clearance? At least the alcohol also tends to make one a poor shot, else he may have been up on murder charges.
Nixon is a tragic figure in our history.  He did a lot of great things for our country but let his insecurities and hate get the better of him.  How could he be so out of touch with reality to think he had to spy on the Democrats when he had the 1972 election locked-up?   If not for Watergate he would have went down as one of our greatest presidents.   I'll never forget the hate and flak he took from the left when he approved the Christmas bombings of 1972.  Yet it helped to finally get us out of Vietnam and get our POW's home.
President Nixon ended the war in Vietnam, allowed the middle class families access funds education , the best foreign policy. watergate a set up to destroy President Nixon by the rich oil barrons , took place after he vowed to nationalize the oil companies for the phoney oil shortage in 72. All the players of watergate knew each other , the crime was listen to the advise to cover up instead hand over to justice department. Only history will show how much he loved America.
How Sad! Two ( Nixon & Elvis ) men with great gifts and promise ruined by their private demons, while those around them either enabled their paranoia or
were not strong enough to point out where their actions were leading.  At least Nixon, unlike little
George had a brain! And Cheney is probably the most
dangerous man to the country that has held public office in my lifetime.
Nixon was a great President. Like Sinatra & Elvis he did it his way. His downfall. . . envious liberals
I always thought Nixon was a loser, but after taking a Political Science class, I learned that he was a master at foreign affairs and diplomacy. His ethics were not so hot, but, hey...some of the presidents since Nixon's were not either!
President Nixon had the potential to be one of the greatest American presidents had he not been paranoid about everyone and inclined to listen to corrupt, insincere, antidemocratic, demogogues he appointed to critical high level positions.

While his foreign policies were formulated with great skill and genius in collaboration with Henry Kissinger the individuals,i.e. Haldeman, Erlichman, Dean 'et.al.'who comprised his domestic advisers were aware of the President's paranoia and suggested and did all sorts of things to excerbate the negative images of the President. However, in the final analysis the positive will outweigh the negative.
Weather Nixon was or was not the greatest president, one man does not run the country. Other than Regan there have been no "great" presidents or flocks of croonies. Elvis was high on drugs when he went to the White House and Ole Blue eyes wouldn't have been famous if it weren't for his mob connection.

I am amazed at the poor spelling ability of some of the responders.
You know, I find it quite amusing that Cheney has had DUI's. Of course, being from Wyoming, I know there's not much to do around here other than drink.

As for Nixon, being more liberal, I feel that the disgrace that he brought upon this country is indeed still being felt to this day. However, the disgrace that is being put upon us by our current government and Presidential hopeful's will be felt by my grandchildren's grandchildren.  There is no point in critizing Nixon when reality is smacking us all in the face.

Out of curiousity: How many of you will spend 2008 trying to make up the money you spent on Christmas in 2007?? Amazing how our economy is making such a strong comeback during this commericalized holiday. *smirks*
One's feelings toward Richard Nixon and his Presidency sound like they can serve as an excellent benchmark of ones understanding of America and American politics.

Of the 56,000 American military dead wasted in the Vietnam War, 28,000 of them died while Nixon was President.  If you think that Nixon was anything other than a socially inept egomaniac and a disaster to the well being of this country and the world, you are a fool and an idiot.

Even his classic criticism of Mark Felt (“How could a Jew become so high in the FBI”) was in error.  Felt was not Jewish nor is any member of his family.

His bonding with Dick Cheney also seems appropriate.  (TWO DUI’s in college!!!!!)  Nixon surrounded himself with sycophants much like our current President Bush.  As a former alcoholic, Bush, Cheney, and Nixon seem to have much in common in that they don’t understand that despite the Authority they may think they have, just because they say something doesn’t mean that it is true.

Our American Presidency seems to continue to be our American Tragedy.

We tend to forget Nixon was just a man and like all men he could do great things and not so great things. Do you remember Bill Clinton.
That is why I am proud to say I voted for President Nixon the first year 18 YO's could vote in California.
Robert Greene Pinellas Park, Fla wrote " Nixon was probably one of if not our best President in the History of the Unite States "
are you on the same drugs Presley was on.
I bet he thinks Bush is a great President
That ear wrenching comment " I am not a crook " from Richard NIXON WILL forever Ring in my ears . I respected President Nixon and still do. He did not realize that history always proves a persons honesty or guilt. By the way he was not a crook but he was a hard core politician and I would not trade him for someone else as president during his time.He did stop the Vietnam war.
I totally agree with Joseph Swonger of Dade City, Florida, and, another comment earlier about him being one of our best foreign diplomats for the USA.  The election for president was in the palm of his hand before the Watergate fiasco.  He let a lot of "enemies" in sheeps clothing guide him to failure and disgrace: the Communists hated him because they couldn't sway his actions against them, so they used other "methods of destruction" against our "leader" and our country's reputation.  At least he wasn't getting his "jollies" while he was supposed to be conducting our Nations affairs in the Oval Office. I think we all know who I mean, and, none of us know how many other indiscretions by other Presidents, past and future, will ever be known.  Can anyone really define Watergate and what it was really all about?
SHAME MR NIXON WAS BEATEN AND ROBBED BY DEMS
IN HIS FIRST PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION. IF MR NIXON
HAD WON,THERE WOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN A VIETNAM WAR,
AND OVER 20000 AMERICANS WOULD HAVE HAD THEIR CHANCE
TO LIVE OUT THEIR LIVES IN PEACE,INSTEAD OF GRAVES.
SO... YOU STILL THINK MR NIXON WAS STUPID FOLKS??
Reginald, Nixon REALLY met with Zappa, Newton, and some guy named Stackhouse?  What was the meeting about?  Why isn't it mentioned on any Zappa site?  THAT would be the coolest thing ever...if it were true!
If JFK's rich daddy hadn't bought him the 1960 election there would have been no Cuban missle crisis under Nixon, the Soviets wouldn't have dared. It was right for Nixon to suspect us Canadians of being communists as our stupid baby boomer parents elected Trudeau.
Why would anyone consider Frank Sinatra to be an unlikely friend?  Sinatra fans are old fogies -- not part of the Younger Generation -- and Nixon was an old fogey.
Jim Golie:  As much as you are right about drunk driving, you aren't taking into account the times.  This was the 1960s.  If you look a couple of hundred years further back, you'll find that most of our founding fathers were slave owners.  That's a heinous thought today, but it was the reality of the time.  A hundred years from now, people will think the same about using tobacco or driving poluting automobiles.  It's the reality of today, though.
Nixon was set up by the left and Felt, pure sleaze, was their tool.  Our country has been on a downward spiral, except for the eight years under Reagan, ever since.  Nixon was a great President, and only morons could think otherwise.
To John Doe, Robert Greene, and Sal Cento,
get over yourselves. robert greene, what the hell are you talking about? you've clearly been dropped a few times. john doe- thanks for bein such a pussy as to dish out your hate for our curent president on a page that posted an article about the many friends of Nixon   AND USE A FAKE NAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
people like you disgust me. it's people like you that are going to be the demise of this country and furthermore- the world. people who base their decisions on what they don't like about the other
option. are you saying you'd rather have a cheat, a liar, a thief, an impudent pig, and a joke running your country as apposed to a leader that has done everything in his power to keep your waste-of-space ass safe? sal cento- IT WOULD'VE BEEN DONE WITH DIPLOMACY!?!?!?!?! DIPLOMACY!?!?!?!?!?!?! how can you give someone credit for their skills in handling foreign negotiations when every word that came out of the man's mouth was a lie!?!?!?! you people are dumb. you're just dumb. wake up. stop being pissed of at Bush for all he's done in his time. without his efforts, you probably wouldn't have that luxury of bashing YOUR COUNTRY'S LEADER. at least he really cares. in a world run by greed, anger, violience, and chaos, that man is trying his best to keep this country at peace. i know there are some things he's said that are a little off the rocker but he knows that too. give the man a break. could you do his job? i don't think so. and until you guys have the balls to confront the issues that you're pissed off about head-on, stop wasting our time with your pathetic outrages. AND GROW UP.
“Lets make one thing perfectly clear” The US lost the war in Viet Nam. We ran like puppies with tails between our legs. Nixon’s Christmas bombing in 1972 had no effect on the outcome of the war or the release of POWs. Like Bush, Nixon wanted to be a war president. Both will go down in history as failures. God help the troops who have been killed or injured because of the two “war presidents”
the guy that won 1 million, let him keep it, may-b he`ll stay out of trouble or may-b he`ll get really pissed & who knows what he`ll do or hurt out of anger.
Everybody yells about Watergat but how many people know that Hillary Clinton was a Democrat mole working on the Republican committee that suggested the break-in and then turned them in.  And then railed that the republicans were so evil she had to become a Democrat.  Nixon wasn't near as bad as that treacherous broad.  Who by the way was reading peoples FBI files from the 1200 in the white house basement to find dirt on people.  Why wern't you railing for the Clintn's heads when that was proven.  A man under tricky dick was in possession of "ONE" FBI file and served time for it.  You're just a bunch of traitorous commie bastards that wouldn't make a mole on Richard Nixon's ass.  Clean up the traitors in your own party before talking about good American people.
Who knows whether or not Mark Felt became "Deep Throat" out of revenge for Nixon not appointing him the FBI Director?  Perhaps someone will take down that other power monger named "Dick" Cheney, the same way.
nixon was not a great president he was basically a nut if you look at the history
Nixon would've been a great president had he not gotten so paranoid about every little thing he deemed a threat.
