Taylor funeral - much too soon

Posted: Monday, December 03, 2007 12:03 PM

MIAMI – There’s a certain lump that swells in the throat when you stare at a casket you shouldn’t be seeing. I have experienced that now three times this year – twice with family members gone much too soon and again today with Sean Taylor, just 24 years old.

I didn’t know Taylor, but I know how special he was by taking nothing more than a quick glance around Pharmed Arena on the campus of Florida International University Monday, where his funeral was taking place. In the 4,700 seats are people with that familiar look – shock, crippling sadness, anger, disbelief. They all know they’re not supposed to be here. But they are.

Before the services began, soft music played while a highlight reel rolled of Taylor playing football for the University of Miami and the Washington Redskins. Other than the strings and melody of the recordings, there was no noise. Just focus. People staring up blankly at two big screens where Taylor was seen delivering crushing blows on opponents, intercepting passes, sacking quarterbacks, celebrating good moments on the field with his teammates.

That is how Taylor is known to football fans across America. Not the image of him alone in a flower-draped coffin, surrounded by lovely floral arrangements on easels, including one bearing his popular jersey number 21.

A large delegation of players, coaches and executives with the Washington Redskins made the trip to South Florida for the services. Many other National Football Leagues players and former University of Miami stars are here too – including the NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. There’s even been a sighting of O.J. Simpson.

VIDEO: Sean Taylor remembered

Having worked at one time as a reporter covering the NFL, I know every player who has passed away isn’t remembered with such a show of unity. Nothing against those men. This simply shows how treasured Taylor was to a great many people whose lives he touched.

TV satellite trucks are set up all around the arena. We reporters all seem to say the same thing: A life cut short. A player in his prime who delighted crowds. A young father learning the responsibilities of being a dad. A man who wanted nothing more than to get his college degree, which his girlfriend said he was going after starting next month.

Life has a way of interrupting our plans. The four young men charged in Taylor’s murder didn’t plan on shooting him, much less killing him, according to Miami-Dade police. But they allegedly did.

And here we all are.

Why is this funeral being given such massive attention? My best friend died in October after a 3 year battle with cancer. He married his childhood sweetheart, helped raise 2 great kids, never got in trouble with the law, an upstanding Christian man. Where was the media for him?
Just want to send our condolence to family and and friends and all the teammates at such a sad time your in our prayers from Northdakota
As far as I'm concerned, they went in there with a gun, they planed on doing whatever it took to get what they wanted even if it was to kill. Otherwise they wouldn't need a gun if the thought no one was at home. They should be tried for 1st degree murder.
This was a senseless act that these teenagers have done. They should have been doing something more active such as reading a book or trying to see their future like an example Sean Taylor has done.He did get there and now it was their turn. What's wrong with young people today? They are hatin' on one aother cause you got this and that but they can do it too also. Get the education and rise to the top and you will be their just like they did.
IF THE FOUR CHARGED HAD A GUN IN THERE POSSESSION THEY WERE INTENDING TO DO SOMETHING. THEY HAD A GUN FOR A REASON!! REASON IS JUST IN CASE THEY GOT GOT THERE WERE GOING TO USE IT AND THEY DID!! AND THEY KILLED AN INNOCENT PERSON.
Terry, one question was your friend in the media? was he in the NFL, NBA, ect? if not there would not have been any news crews. sorry but that is the way it is. I'm truely sorry for your loss beacuse I know that cancer is painful for every one involved.
it is a senseless death. He was so young, so talented. this murder sheds light on one thing, too many guns are gttting in the hands of indivduals who shouldn't be carrying them. its a shame we will never know what kind of a father, husband, football player he could have been all becasue of foolish senseless violence.
Terry- your friend's death was not memorialized like Sean taylor's death because your friend is not famous.  Her illness however is and this country puts in millions of money, time, and other charities to recognize those who have died from it.  (cancer) Sean Talor was a beloved football star, which i am sure you know by now is a very sacred sport to the american people.  if you dont want to grieve Sean's death, then move on the make noise for your deceased friend whom you know has accomplished much in her life, but the rest of us dont.
I agree clarissa. if they had a gun then the must have intended on using it if necessary.  Isnt it something how they went there to take money, but instead they leave taking a life, which is far more valuable than money.  i bet they wouldnt want to trade places with Sean now. Somehow, i wish they could trade places with him.
This is for Terry Taylor from Buda. I understand what your saying, but I think you need to realize that life is very different for famous ppl. I think you should of kept the comment to yourself and thought about this families loss at this time. They are needing a lot of prayers and to know that you would at least be one more prayer for them and not so selfish, it may have been batter. No hard feelings, I just think we all should think more about what we say.
My prayers are with all of the parties involved.  No one wins in this situation. We need to do a better job at parenting and be aware of what our young folk are doing outside our homes. I have a 24 year old son, it hurts deep in my heart understanding the pain the Taylor's must be experiencing. We can only trust that God will bring a healing to the entire community of Sean Taylor. “A great young man, gone too soon”.  God loves him more than we can ever imagine. The devil snatched him from earth, but God took him back to rest in eternal peace with him.  “God Bless”
LIFE IS SOMETHING WE ALL SHOULD CHERISH. YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN YOU TICKET IS GOING TO GET PUNCHED.
our prayer goes to his family yet for us alive life goes on - it is very sad for a young man full of life and future - the sad part most of all is: our goverment needs to step up - we do not need guns, no one need guns - why do these young men hold a gun??? what is matter with our government - we need to talk to stop this violence - violence or revange call for more violence - when are we calling for a immediately stop - we critize other countries for the violence - yet we better look ourselves in the mirror - we allow to carry gun, we allow the violence, we are not calling for discipline any more, everything goes - we feel for Mr. Taylor family, it should never happen - 4 young men under 21 should be working, learning or helping someone not going around with guns - what is the future of these people now - where are their families to busy to work - get the priority straight - they should have control or they have to be responsabile also of their stupid actions -
TO TERRY TAYLOR

THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR FRIEND. SORRY ABOUT THAT, BUT SEAN HAD A GREATER INFLUENCE ON ALOT OF PEOPLE. HE WAS A PROFESSIONAL SPORTS HERO. IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE PUBLICITY HE RECEIVED, THEN DON'T READ ABOUT IT AND KEEP YOUR COMMENTS TO YOURSELF!!! MY CONDOLENCES TO THE FAMILY. I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GOING THROUGH. REMEMBER GOD DOESN'T PUT MORE ON YOU THAN YOU CAN BARE.
It it so sad to see our black young men turn to violent & at such a young age.  Sean Taylor a ripe young age was changing his life...died so young but my question is?? Did he die in Christ?? Because if he did he will rise again!!! People it is time to take an example of your life & realize that people are dying & Christ is soon to come!! Will you be ready to meet the King face to face!!! My prayers go out to his family and to NFL association...We did lose a great young man but if you are in Christ & Christ is in you & if Christ was in him....We will see each other again over on the other side....
I ditto those messages below...they had a gun. How planned is that? They carried it with the intention to use it and they did...WHY NOT charge them with murder ?????People complain about our judicial system and how it serves or doesn't serve our country. Let's see how this plays out. And what about those who survived this horrific murder???? They have to live with it the rest of their lives. My heart goes out to Jackie, the mom, and their very young baby, Jackie and family and friends. What a better world it would be if there were no more GUNS!
If they didn't know he was home, why did they cut the phone line? I think the police need to dig a little deeper; something doesn't seem right here.
As I sit here and read all of the comments made in the past several days, I am shocked that people can not see what our youth is like. I agree that they had a plan and taking a gun was with full intention on useing it. Why does our youth feel that everything should just be handed to them? What happened to work hard and make a name for your self?
I have worked in the juvenile system for many years and the crime rate of what our youth and the hands of our furture, it is a sad thing to think that one day we will have to pick from a gene pool of these youth to run our country...
We need more young Taylors who can pull up there boots and get there life straight and do the right thing.
to taylor in  buda, texas  our hearts go  out to you .spend more time and energy  sharing love not hate.the media  was there  w/brian piccolo  /gale sayers teamate how soon we  forget the fallen  lets  keep  your friend alive with  love towardeveryliving  soul.peace
This was a football player, not a saint.  It is a bit disconcerting that someone whose claim to fame had little significance except for that should be so revered.  Now, if he did great public service aside from football like some athletes do, I would expect all this praise.  But, really, what did he do that was so wonderful that the world should mourn?
sorry  terry taylor for the loss of your loved one just  happened sean, who may even be  your relative wasloved by  anation
Kudos Barb. No one wants to take responsibility for their own actions anymore. Putting the blame on others works in our justice system and seems to be the New American way. Sean Taylor was a true inspiration for todays youth. I also believe there is more to this than robbery. If the investigators don't mess this up the *boys responsible should be locked up for a long long time. It is such a loss of life and a tragic. Condolences to the family.
what does being black or white have to do with a senseless murder? those kids shouldnt have had guns. unless you are a hunter or officer..why does anyone need a gun? so we can kill someone.?.I think the words black, white, latino, etc. should be omitted from this world. then it wouldnt matter and no one would point fingers. we are all americans...period.
This whole event is sad and, It makes you embrace life just a little bit more.
If they didn't know he was home, why did they cut the phone line? I think the police need to dig a little deeper; something doesn't seem right here.
Cathy, La Mesa, CA
I agree with you. Things are not adding up. I think that they need to start looking at the girlfried. How did they know which room belonged to them? How did they not know he was home recovering since it was in the news? Just look at her in the video it does not seem like a suffering girlfriend to me.
I'm sitting here reading theses comments that are made towards Terry and it just makes me sick that  people idolize the sports professional.
It seems like Terry is still mourning for the lose of his bestfriend and you couldn't give him that respect. But no, you just had to put in remarks like: BUT SEAN HAD A GREATER INFLUENCE ON ALOT OF PEOPLE. HE WAS A PROFESSIONAL SPORTS HERO.
You don't know what influences Terry's bestfriend had on others.  I think that him raising two well-balanced children would be a hero.  I bet in the eyes of his children he was and still is a HERO!!!!  You don't have to play an over-paid sport to be a hero, which they are.  Hero's are people fighting for us in Iraq, hero's are saving people's lives, hero's are spending 7 hours a day in a classroom with our children teaching them their A,B,C's, not throwing a ball around field.
Terry from Buda--sorry for the loss of your friend but you mentioned that he fought his battle for three years (that's quite a long time to prepare for the end don't you think?) and you say he was fortunate enough to "raise" those great kids...  Sadly, Sean doesn't get the same opportunity to see his daughter grow up and his life was stolen in the blink of an eye... Please work through your grief so you don't make such selfish comments about a guy whom so many young ppl looked up to.  Debbie, Tx
WHEN A YOUNG LIFE IS TAKEN SO VIOLENTLY,AND BRUTALLY I BELIEVE IN AN EYE FOR AN EYE.  THESE THUGS, YES THUGS SHOULD BE GIVEN THE DEATH PENALTY IF THE MEDIA STORIES ARE REPORTED CORRECTLY.  I AM A 47 YR OLD SINGLE MOM WHO STRIVES FOR A BETTER LIFE DAILY HOWEVER; YOU DON'T SEE ME ROBBING AND BRUTALLY KILLING SOMEONE FOR THINGS THAT DON'T BELONG TO ME, GOD BE WITH THE FAMILY, FRIENDS,AND WASHINGTON REDSKIN PLAYERS,COACHES.  GOD BLESS THE NFL FAMILY.LOVE,MARY
Mourn with this family & reach out to the youngsters to guide them. To Buda, Tx -- the average, everday human being isn't recognized in the media when they are taken too soon.  It doesn't mean our society doesn't care (we DO -- lots of $$ for cancer research is given daily in the USA), it simply means there isn't enough time to celebrate everyone's life on the radio or television. My heart goes out to the Taylor family.
