Arlington buries its 400th Iraq casualty

Arlington National Cemetery marked a grim milestone today with the burial of its 400th casualty of the war in Iraq.

Navy Chief Petty Officer Mark Carter, 27, of Fallbrook, Calif., was laid to rest the week before Christmas in a ceremony closed to press coverage. He was killed Dec. 11 during combat operations in Iraq.

Four hundred families have now buried their loved ones at Arlington since the cemetery's first Iraq casualty, Army Capt. Russell Rippetoe, was interred on April 10, 2003. Sixty casualties of the war in Afghanistan are also buried at Arlington.

Sights set on SEALs
From an early age, Carter's sights were set on joining the Navy's elite Sea Air Land commandos, or SEALs.

"That's all he ever wanted to do," a friend told the North County Times. "His goal in life was to be a Navy SEAL."

Carter hung SEAL posters on his walls and enjoyed such extreme sports as skateboarding, paint ball, and rock climbing.

"He was a bit of a thrill-seeker," a family friend told the Virginian-Pilot.

Carter skipped college and enlisted in the Navy in 1998. He entered the SEAL program the following year. A muscular 5-foot-5 ("just a little fireplug"), he proved his mettle in Iraq and Afghanistan, earning two Bronze Stars for combat valor.

"He was the type of kid you wanted on your side if you were ever in a fight," the family friend told KNSD.

The Navy would say only that Carter died "as a result of enemy action while conducting combat operations in Iraq." He is survived by his parents, three brothers, and four sisters.

I appreciate Mike's willingness  to put his life on the line for the protection of all of us here in these United States of America.
It's a real shame a true American hero gets so little mention while Brittany Spears' little sister is all over the news for all the wrong reasons. My thooughts and prayers go out to our fallen comrade and his family. God Bless.
Orwell said, " People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf." My son is an Army Sgt. preparing for his second tour in Irag. God bless those willing to serve and sacrific. God Bless CPO Carter.

There are very few people grow up and become exactly what they dreamed about as a child. He was blessed to accomplish his dream. May God bless you and give you peace.

is deeply appreciated. Semper Fi Bro.
You made a great sacrifice for your country , now may you rest in the arms of God.
Thank you for serving our country proudly!! Rest in Peace!!! My thoughts and prayers go out to the family!!
As a Navy dad, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family of CPO Carter.  Thank you, dear family, for your sacrifice.

It breaks my heart that CPO Carter and 399 others have died in support of an unjust, ineffective war of revenge designed to perpetuate our antagonistic foreign policy.

Our leaders have asked our military to do the wrong thing the right way and it is past time to stop.  Every elected official who supports the very policies that drain hope from others and engender hatred of our once land of liberty should be *fired* by election.  They then should be sent abroad to understand the impact of their maniacal, myopic polices on the other citizens of this orb.
To the family of  CPO Carter.
THANK YOU !
Know that there people around the world that  do appreciate your sacrifice .My heart cries for you .
I am humbled.
God  bless you  CPO Carter, Rest in Peace, You are a TRUE HERO .......

Here's to him and those like him!  A warrior's life is never truly appreciated until it is lost in mortal conflict.  May he serve as a reminder to those who cannot fathom what a warior experiences.

Thank you for your unwaivering service to our country. I pray your family will know peace like a river during this time of loss.
This makes me so sad. Why are we in this awful war? For what? When is it won? What is a 'victory'? I don't understand it, it's senseless, and not one more soldier should die.
rest now my friend you are a true HERO you will now see peace that we dont have here.
From a fellow Navy Chief Petty Officer Retired. my thoughts and prayers to the fallen comrade and his family. God Bless
Thank you Mark Carter for giving your life for ours!! You have fought the "good fight" and now rest in Jesus' arms.  God rest your soul and may God comfort your family and loved ones.
Farewell.
It is always tough to lose a warrior.  This warrior has joined all the others that have sacrificed everything for this country and her people, to keep them free.

Rest in Peace CPO Carter, watch our six for us.  We will continue the fight, and won't stop until the mission is completed.

I submit that the best way to remember Chief Mark Carter and all those who are fighting or have died for our way of life, however imperfect it is, is to live free, pray free, vote free, speak free, ride free, and REMAIN free. Should we choose to do this, we ensure that their sacrifices have not been in vain.
For all of you who don't understand the principle of self sacrifice for the better common good, Fredoom isn't Free.  It's paid for with the blood of patriots. Islamic-fasist are out to dominate the world. They will not quit untill the universal Caliphate is established.  Read the Quran, the Hadiths and the Sira.  Then read Mein Kampf.  For a believer of enlighten Western Civilization not to have read and studied these "Nobel" scriptures is as stupid as a Jew in 1933 Nazi Germany not to have read Mein Kampf and believed Hitler's intent.  You don't have to be Prof Einstein to figure out the threat! PS: There was WMD left in Iraq even after the Russian Spetnaz took most of them out.  Why the US government doesn't support this is beyond me! Ask any EOD soldier.
CHIEF CARTER SIR!!LOOK WHAT A BEAUTIFUL WORLD YOU HAVE LEFT BEHIND FOR THE ONES THAT UNDERSTAND AND ADMIRE AND HONOR.THANK YOU MY FRIEND FOR EVEN ALLOWING ME THIS TIME TO SALUTE YOU !!THANKS TO YOUR FAMILY,THANKS TO YOUR MOTHER FOR ALLOWING US THE TIME TO SHARE THE LOSS WITH HER.MAY GOD BLESS HER AND ACCEPT YOU INTO HIS WONDERFL KINGDOM OF LOVE..WE WILL SEE EACH OTHER ONE DAY AND I WILL BE SO HUMBLE TO FINALLY HAVE MET YOU IN PERSON...THANK YOU MY BROTHER FOR HONORING OUR COUNTRY THAT WE BOTH HAVE LOVED SO MUCH...YOU ARE FREE SON,THANK YOU SO MUCH...
Thank you Chief Mark Carter for what you have done for me and my country. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.  May they know the peace you fought so bravely for and take comfort in knowing you are truly home.
As a veteran Air force Msgt that served in the liberation of Kuwait, I send my best wishes to the familly of a true hero Mark Carter.I don't know why we are back over there fighting a war that has no victory, but my thoughts are always with the men and women risking there lives for a war most of them want no part pf.
God Bless this man's family and all the families of the fallen soldiers, sailors, marines, and civilian contractors who have died in this war.  I know how awful it is to lose a friend in a war that never should have been (Vietnam).  This young man was brave and his family is justifiably proud of him.  Live on with Jesus!!!
My heart, thoughts, prayers and tears go out to the family.  Thank you for all you have done for us.  May God Bless and keep you for eternity.
Value your memories of your son. He is a hero.
See you on the other side, Chief...
RIP my American brother... and thank you for your selfless gift to America. Your family should be proud. My best wishes to them.
