‘The Secretary of the Army regrets to inform you ...’

WASHINGTON – Army Staff Sgt. Jonathan Dozier's ancestors fought in the Civil War, both World Wars, and Desert Storm, so it seemed only natural that he would serve in the military, too.

"He's been playing soldier since he was a tiny boy," his mother told Tennessee’s Jackson Sun. Dozier would dress in camouflage as a child and play army in the woods behind his Chesapeake, Va., home.

He joined the Army for real in 1997, later left to attend Middle Tennessee State University, and re-enlisted in 2005. Before deploying to Iraq in August, he asked his father, "Is it weird to really want to do this?"

"No," his father replied, according to Virgina’s Daily Press, "This is what you're trained to do."

The parents of Army Staff Sgt. Jonathan Dozier, of Chesapeake, Va., Carl Dozier and Martha Cabe, center, and widow Amy Dozier, second from left, receive flags from Brig. Gen. John Johnson, during a burial ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, Tuesday, Jan. 22.

Dozier was trained as a sniper team leader in Iraq. He and five other members of the First Armored Division were killed Jan. 9 by a bomb blast in Sinsil, north of Baghdad. When two soldiers appeared later that day at his father's door, his dad knew something was wrong.

"How bad is it?" he asked them, according to the Daily Press. "As soon as they started saying, ‘The Secretary of the Army regrets to inform you ...’, I knew how bad it was."

The 30-year-old Dozier was laid to rest Tuesday at Arlington National Cemetery in what has become an increasingly rare public burial.

I have been covering the Arlington burials for about eight months, and the public ones used to average as many as two or three a week. But Dozier's burial was the first one open to the press in more than two months.

I think that's because the number of American casualties in Iraq has decreased and, perhaps, because more families are opting for private burials. For instance, the families of the last four fallen service members wanted their burial ceremonies closed to the public.

Dozier was the 402nd casualty of the war in Iraq to be laid to rest at Arlington. Several hundred mourners gathered on a brisk, bleak winter afternoon to pay their final respects to the fallen soldier.

He is survived by his widow, Amy, and their infant daughter, Emma Grace.

Washington Producer John Rutherford is a decorated Vietnam veteran. He posts a weekly tribute at www.dailynightly.msnbc.com to service members killed in Iraq and Afghanistan in the Daily Nightly blog.

God bless SSG Dozier, his family and all of his loved ones.  We are in debt to all of them and to all who still serve, forever, for our freedom.
Very sad.  My thoughts are with Staff Sgt. Jonathan Doziers' family.

I hope the comments remain respectful.

Perhaps the reason for the decrease in public burials is due more to the shame and regret of the families for buying into Bush's 935's lies that caused that burial to happen in the first place and less to do with a drop in casualties.
Of course, we have no idea how many in the U.S. military are dying anyway since you aren't allowed to report on things that don't make us warm and fuzzy.

As to this piece.  So what?  It's just another obituary about someone I really couldn't care less about.  If he believed in the conflict and supported the president, then by all means, I am actually happy he is no longer with us.
Thank you Staff Sgt. Jonathan Dozier for giving up your life to protect our life, libery and freedom. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.
As an American and veteran I, and millions more, have the highest respect for your son, husband and father and the deepest sympathy for his family. We are free today and will be forever because of men like Jonathan Dozier.

May he rest in peace.
Having been the one saying those words to more then one brother Soldiers family it is a difficult thing.  Although I might not know a Soldier personally all are a part of my big family. I've never had to be on the receiving end of a family member dying but I do in some small way understand the sorrow.  When I have to perform this duty I always make sure that it is done with honor and dignity.  We all have different opinions on the war, whether good or bad, but never forget those who make the ultimate sacrifice.  Though the flag that is presented is a reminder of a loves one sacrifice it is the legacy of their duties that reminds us all of what we stand for.  So as his family mourns his loss and remembers a loved one, another family mourns him too.  To his family I send my sympathies, but I want to convene some hope too.  That the spirit of their fallen love one still lives in the brothers of his other family.  We will also make a promise that he will always be remembered and we will represent who he was with pride.  Duty, Honor, Country.
Only through these articles on the internet can the nation continue to remember and appreciate the sacrifice of our military members and their families.
Sad but poignant article about this serviceman and his sacrifice for our country. My heart goes out to his family and friends. Remember all our military serving in many countries around the world!
This is what Militray pride is all about. This young man a Staff Sgt. Bleed RED, WHITE, and Blue. Not for his Family but for is Country. In the young Man's own words it shows his Pride to his Country and Respect to his Ancestors that severed before him. "IS IT WEIRD TO REALLY WANT TO DO THIS"  We need to pray for his Family. And all so for all MEN & WOMAN that are in the Military for thier safe returns. As a Vet. I would like to say thank you to the Dozier family for allowing Staff Sgt Dozier story to be told.
The American Public has been force fed Lies about this war from day one.  Like John Kerry said Who is going to be the last one to die for a mistake...or something to that effect.  Now the media is trying to put a happy face on this war.  Well I also come from a military family going back to World War II. I have Four Cousins currently deploid to IRAQ.  The thing that upsets them the most is that they feel forgotten.  I spoke to one of my cousins at X-MAS she is going for her third deployment.  Her kids call My Aunt MOM.  It's a shame the whole thing is a shame.
Thank you for keeping us civilians aware at all times of the awful sacrifices our soldiers are making.  unlike in past yrs, when they were defending our freedoms, the are now defending others,  too weak to fend for themselves.
My condolences to the family of Staff Sgt Jonathan Dozier, to mother, father, wife and little one Emma Grace, as well as any others that he touched in his life. The legacy he brought to you will live on in those he touched. You are his legacy. Little Emma Grace, you daddy loved you.
don't you mean that these are only the few you are allowed to see??????
First,my sincere condolences to all American familes who have lost loveones, plus, the thousands who have come home with such terrible physical and mental injuries. As a Canadian, I recall vividly during the Vietnam War, watching the American news around the dinner table and feeling so ammune to the pain being suffered by all the "average American families". It is such a shame to see this happening again with another generation of young Americans in large part due to the arrogance and selfindulgance of this President. To all fighting forces, American,Canadian and all other coalition forces, you have my total support.
Thank you
John
God Bless the Dozier family as they go through their time of sorrow, and God Bless the USA.
Please don't forget our brave military, especially the infantry--the ones actually on the front lines.
This is so heart breaking. My prayers go out to the family especially Amy and Emma and friends. This family tradition should not have ended this way.
What a terrible waste of an honorable and professional young man. His wife and daughter, along with the rest of his family will have to live with the knowledge that his loss was the direct result of Bush's personal war. SSG Dozier's photo should be in every schoolroom in America. Bush should be tried for treason. My heartfelt sorrow goes out to SSG Dozier's family. May God Bless you.
My deepest sympathies and regrets to the family. Your son was a hero and will always be one.
How sad that out men are still dying over there.  NO weapons of mass destruction ever found.  NO evidence of a threat to us here in America.  Hussein is Dead.  Now, more Arabs across the world are inflamed against the US...which will cause more terror and death to US citizens in the end. How sad to think that these men are dying in vain.  I am truly sad to be an American today.
Thank you for your sacrifice Dozier family. I cannot begin to understand your pain but i respect your choices and everyday thank god for the united states of america and all of the brave individuals that protect our way of life around the world. Be proud!!!!!!
Thank you brother Dozier, I salute you and more than that I ask that God would Bless and care for your family.
Indeed our thoughts and hearts goes out to the families and friends of the veterans who served and in all to many cases gave their all is a war in which President Bush and his administration distorted and otherwise lied 935 times in order to wrongfully and illegally suck the United States of American into a invasion against Ieaq, a nation whom represented no threat to us.
My heartfelt prayers go out to this loving family. May God's Grace sustain you as nothing else can. Our son is headed to Iraq in March. (He is at Ft. Stewart,Ga.now.)I know that no soldier is guaranteed a "return trip home." My son felt compelled to serve mainly, because of son's (& daughters)such as yours. God bless you & give you peace until you are reunited with him.
God Bless the family and keep them near at this time...there is a lot of verbage flying around about the iraq war but i want to say..
i know that there is a God and He will judge all in the end....There is no hiding from it... say what you want, we'll have to wait to see...there are people like me who recognize the bad break you and your family have received. Thank you and your family for the sacrifice you have made. God bless you
My head is bowed in reverent silence as I bid farewell to a fallen brother.
My heart is filled with the pain of his family.
My chest is filled with the rush of Freedoms Air.
Thank you, my fallen brother.
The Gift is passed.
Few in millions can imagine the courage and the cool head Dozier had. Those are professionals that are unique. Those that survive the job are usually quiet forever in their past. Each deserve the ultimate of respect and awards, in death. In life they desire to remain unknown. I salute these outstanding people.
To Amy, Emma Grace and family, my deepest sympathy.  To Jonathan Dozier, my deepest gratitude.
Another sad death due to a war started on lies.  When will the American really demand that it end.
Our condolences go to Jonathan Dozier's family and friends. We are grateful and heartened by his sacrifice. You all remain in our thoughts and prayers.
nothing good came out of war..
that is a naive remark, but I'm still a big believer of that...

what the hell are we doing in Iraq? Is serving ghe Bush agenda worth losing our finest men and women?
Unfortunatly FREEDOM IS NOT FREE and some pay the price for OUR freedom. May God be with his fmily.
The People of the USA Regret to inform you, that we should never have been over there in the first damn place.
My condolences to the family. This man was a great man for all he gave. America should show him their respect. God Bless him.

I just read that Pres. Bush and his administration made hundreds of false statements in order to take our country into war, and then I read this article.  My heart aches for the hundreds of brave, patriotic men and women prepared to give their lives for their country who have died, or been maimed physically and mentally, for the purpose of defending our country, when in reality they were fighting a war based on no threat to our freedoms, but rather the misguided politics of our leaders.  The blood of these brave men and women are on their hands, and no "spin doctors" can cleanse them of their sins.
To Staff Sgt. Jonathan Dozier:
Thank you. Men like you make the world a better place. I'm just sad that far too often we lose the best men far too soon. Rest in peace, and God bless your family.
My condolences and deepest sympathy goes out to the family of Staff Sgt. Dozier.
Why is this one person in the news. There have been 3963 soldiers killed and this one was no more special than any other. We where lied to from the begining about this war and when Mr. Bush meets his maker he will have to answer for the deaths of all these soldiers.
Sad, So sad.  My appreciation goes out to all that are putting their lives on the line in a foreign country to protect us.  Even if one does not agree with the reasoning for us being there, our soldiers did not make these decisions.  They only decision they made was to join the military, and anyone who has been in the military knows that you go when and where you are told.  My condolences go out to this family and all other families who have been effected by this war.
Our prayers and blessings are with his family. We continue to pray for all who have served and are still in battle, in the front lines, and sacrificing their lives for the security, freedom, and peace of our country and the world. We honor him...
God bless him and his family.
Thank you, Brother.  Rest In Peace, we have your six.
No war is worth alife if it is not on your door step and this war was not on our door step nor was it ever going to be. The sooner we get rid of the present administraion the better off this country will be. The current President and his cronies have made this country the most mistrusted country in the world and it will take a generation or more to regain the worlds trust if ever.
I had one of these visits on Christmas morning, 1970.  It still haunts me almost 40 years later.

Thank you, Mr. Rutherford, for reminding people of the price our military heroes and their families are paying.
God Bless!! I come form a long line of soldiers myself and it hurts everytime a young man gives his life. God bless you and your family.
I am deeply sorry for your loss.  My thoughts are with you and your family at this difficult time.
I extend my most deeply heart-felt condolences to the parents, widow and surviving family and friends of Army Staff Sgt. Jonathan Dozier. The Army Staff Sergeant did honour to his anvestors, who fought to preserve the dignity and sense of brotherhood of man (the American Civil war that gave humanity one of its greatest heroes ever Abraham Lincoln) and save civilzation from extremely debilitating ideologies
(the two world wars). The wars in which Sergeant  Jonathan Dozier fought might not have that cachet of soul-elating human endeavours, but at his own personal level he did his duty every bit in honour of the great tradition of service to country that his ancestors had charted starting about a century and a half ago.

The glory Sergeant Dozier's sacrifice highlights in a more dramatic way than, say Chris Hedges', Howard Zinn's and Senator Ray Mac Govern's denunciation of the war-criminals that sent this duty-conscious young descendant of an illustrious family to fight an illegal war in a foreign land already blighted by its home-grown dictator and its population having suffered unnecessary tragedies on a mass scale involving the mass strvation of inocent children as a result of mindless sanctions that benefited the war-mongers and monstrous public decision makers, including the son of the Head of the apex international institution charged with coordinating global efforts at steering humanity's common agenda to build a better world post the two world wars.

The occasion of his private funeral also highlights the enormous tragedy of the hundreds of innocent, tragically anonymous Iraqis who continue to be killed or maimed daily as a result of an illegal ocupation that an unqualifiable politician, in his blind lurch for power, said could go on "for the next 1,000 years".

May The Almighty save our souls!
AMERICA LOST ANOTHER HERO--BUT HE WILL ALWAYS BE WITH US. GOD BLESS MEN LIKE HIM.
What a waste.  A little girl will grow up never knowing her father.  And for what?  Freedom for people who don't want it for a war that was a lie.
