Democrats shut out of Florida

Posted: Tuesday, January 29, 2008 11:06 AM

MIAMI – After enduring the desperate battle over vote counts in the 2000 presidential election debacle – and all the "Flori-DUH" jokes that followed – then fighting over the validity of touch screen voting in the 2004 and 2006 elections, Florida Democrats were eagerly poised for a nice clean shot at 2008. After all, what could possibly go wrong now?

Well, here's exactly what went wrong. In the fourth largest state in the country, with its mother lode of delegates and no shortage of big-money donors, the Democratic candidates are no-shows in the 2008 Florida presidential primary.

VIDEO: The other Florida primary

That left the state wide open to the Republicans, who had a field day in all that open space, and with all that free air-time right before Super Tuesday. For local Democrats there was the sickening realization they may have just shot themselves in the foot with many of the state's famously independent voters come November.

DNC snub
When the Florida legislature voted last spring to move up the Florida primary from March to Jan. 29th, in violation of national party rules, the Democratic National Committee reacted harshly.

To punish Florida, it stripped the state of all 210 of its convention delegates. In order to appease the four approved earlier primary states, the Democratic presidential candidates pledged not to campaign in Florida. All they were allowed to do here was to quickly sneak in and out of private fund-raisers.

While the Republicans also punished Florida, they were much gentler. The national GOP took away half the Florida delegates – leaving a still generous 57 up for grabs – but allowed the Republican candidates to campaign freely here, and as it turned out, without opposition.

A lot of local Democrats thought allowing that to happen was just plain nuts. And two very prominent Democrats even hauled their own national party into federal court.

Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson and Rep. Alcee Hastings argued that in taking away Florida's delegates, and rendering the primary election little more than a beauty contest, the Democratic National Committee was disenfranchising Florida voters.  Hastings claimed the real victims are the people he calls "Joe and Jane Lunch Bucket." Ultimately, they lost that federal case, but the bitter sentiment still resonates.

Just last week, Florida's top Democratic officials once again asked the national party to reconsider, and once again the DNC ignored them. The campaign trail remained cold here for the likes of Sen. Hillary Clinton, Sen. Barack Obama and former Senator John Edwards.

Left with cardboard cut-outs of candidates
So, now there's the odd scenario in Miami-Dade County of a devoted Obama supporter, Dave Patlak, making lots of news by parading around with a life-sized cardboard cut-out of the Illinois senator. He stands at street corners, or outside early polling places and conducts his surrogate campaign, often entertaining crowds by offering them the opportunity to have their pictures taken with "Barack Obama." That's about as good as it gets this time around.

Following up on the 2000 "Flori-duh" jokes, a Miami Herald political cartoonist recently crafted a picture of a "2008 Duh-mocrats" replete with a donkey with a gun to its head symbolizing the Florida ban.

Of course, the Republicans just love this gift. And local Democrats are left to argue gamely that the electorate is still so energized that they expect a record voter turnout.

But from the moment the legislature moved up the primary date, and the Democrats shied away, the process was up-ended – in a state where residents had hoped, naively it appears, that would never happen again.

I'm tired of hearing that the Florida democratic primary is a "beauty pageant". Every vote should and most likely will count. I'm an independent for Hillary and I hope all Democrats get out and vote today.
I dont care if they did strip the delegates i still voted and used my head to do it i voted Edwards.
Way to go Dave!! Thank you!! Obama supporters are with you in spirit. Wish I could be there with you.
The people will still vote ands the winner will still claim victory. When all is set and done the delegates will be seated as will the delegates of Michigan. Florida was stolen in 2000 and was a close call for the republicans in 2004. Michigan was a close call for the democrats in 2000 and 2004. The democrats can not afford to write off both those states, which they will do by not seating them at the convention, and expect to win the general election. So they will seat them. The loser will complain bitterly but by that time it (hopefully) will not matter.
I wonder if there is an agenda behind the ruling.  Just a thought.
something stinks  "again" !!!!!
As a 23 year old white male from lower middle class who is inspired by Sen. Obama like no one has inspired me before, I would lose all faith in politics. If Florida or Michigan turn out to count, and go to Clinton that would be a gross injust on the American people. And if that were to happen and as a result keep Sen. Obama from winning th nomination I would be devistated. If all that happens the chance of me voting in the Presidential election dwindles, if I do vote there is no way I will vote for Clinton!
I think it needs to be pointed out more clearly in the article that the Florida Legislature is heavily Republican and that most Democrats voted against changing the date of the primary.  The effect was that the Republican dominated legislature disenfranchised the Democratic voters.

This points out a major weakness in our political process.  While the Supreme Court has mandated changes to state laws that disenfranchise voters in state elections the same cannot be said for national elections where tradition has never favored the common man having a voice in who will represent his political party.  By letting a relative handful of voters in four small states have a demonstratively large voice in who the party nominees will be we have created a system that is unrepresentative of a majority of Americans.
Cease and desist referring to the Democratic vote in Florida as a "beauty contest."  My vote to a precious right and I abhor having it referred to in such a demeaning manner regardless of the cause!!
Contrast the DNC shutting out Florida (and probably handing Florida to the Republicans in November) with how slick the RNC usually is, and it brings to mind the quote from Dark Helmet in Space Balls: "Evil wins because good is stupid"
We in Illinois, feel the same way as Florida people. The canidates, did not feel Il. is important enough to come and tell us their views. They only care about the states that can get them elected. Again, the politics aren't about the people, just the power and money they can get for themselfs.
Agreed. You would think a party called the Democratic Party would live up to its name; go figure. As a Democrat I am infuriated with Mr. Howard Dean and the DNC. This will have the effect in Michigan as it will in FL - taking the energy out of the Democratic base in those states and a missed opportunity to make the case to independents to go blue this year. So the people in Florida stand up and say "Why should a voter in Iowa have more impact than me?" and they get shunned by Mr. Dean and Sen. Edwards??!! So much for being for the little guy.
WELL I GUESS THE CARDBOARD CUTOUTS COULD DO AS GOOD OF A JOB THAN ANY OF THE CANDIDATES. LAST NIGHT AT THE PRESIDENTS STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS, SEN. KENNEDY AND SEN. OBAMA, LOOKED LIKE A TOAD AND A TURD,SITTING THERE AND NOT RESPONDING TO OUR COMMANDER IN CHIEF, DO WE REALLY NEED SOMEBODY IN THE HIGHEST OFFICE THAT HAS NO REGARDS FOR IT?
Mr. Potter,
When you say the DNC stripped the state of it's 210 delagates, does this mean that there will be no delegates at the Democratic National Convention?  And if not, then how will they be expected to cast their votes since on one voted in the primare.  This is truly the most bizarre of everything that has happened in the state!
It seems very unfair, that the "punishments" were not the same for the Dem's and Republicans IN THE SAME STATE and very stupid, on the Democratic National Committee's part. They just gave the Republicans a huge head start on the general election in November.
Isn't the chairman of the DNC Howar-duh Duh-ean?
I AM SURE DEMOCRATS WILL REALIZE THERE IS ONLY ONE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE WHO WILL WIN NOT FLORIDA, BUT THE PRECIDENCY, THAT IS HILLARY CLINTON.  TO ALL DEMOCRATS, LETS GET OUT AND SHOW THE COUNTRY WHO IS THE BOSS.  SHAME ON YOU TED AND CAROLINE KENNEDY. YOU WILL BE SORRY. TO ALL CUBANS, (I AM ONE) GET OUT THERE AND VOTE FOR THE ONLY PERSON WHO CARES ABOUT US.  HILLARY.
The Michigan and Flordia State Democratic Party Leadership as well as the National Democratic Party Leadership should all be very ashamed of the way this entire affair has been handled. Their reckless and foolish behavior has resulted in the disfranchisement of millions of voters and has also made the Democratic Party the laughing stock of the nation. In the wake of this debacle, I for one call for their immediate resignation and/or involuntary  removal if they lack the decency to do so.
Both parties appear to be in full self-destruct mode with the Republicrats shortchanging the unemployed and the elderly in the pointless tax rebates to the Demoncrats pushing Florida aside in the primaries. Maybe they felt sorry for the Libertarians and are trying to give them a shot ?
HHHOOOORRRAAAAYYYY! Keep the Hippies out of FLA!
So the National Democratic Party Headquarters felt that the State of Florida had stepped across the line in moving the date, so to spite them and all of the Democratic voters, they stripped away all of the 210 convention delegates.

So much for an equal type election process!
Just like Democrats to deal themselves a death blow early on.
I don't think the campaign trail in Florida has been "cold" for Hillary Clinton.  She's been in there like a thief.
I am VERY upset that my vote will not count.  This is supposed to be a country where everyone has the right to vote and have that vote count.  Is anyone out there interested in starting a class action suit against the Democratic Party for refusing us our rights?  Please let me know.
Ok, I'm not politically with it but does this mean Florida voters have no say in the presidential election? Doesn't the electoral college have the final say regardless of what the popular vote is? (the reason we're a democracy in a republic?) someone clue me in!
The Clintons were fine with the "no count" awhile ago when they thought they'd run away with this nomination. But after a huge surprise in Iowa, and a HUGE loss in SC....they now want to again change the rules. They have become do disingenuous, so dishonest, so divisive ... it is difficult to understand any votes for her any longer.
Aw.

Poor Florida Democrats. They knew the rules regarding when they could hold their primary, they violated them, and the DNC punished them.

Now they are whining that the punishment they called down on themselves is a mistake. Gee, I guess they are SO SPECIAL that rules don't apply to them. Sure the Republican Party, when placed in the same situation, gave the Florida Republicans a slap on the wrist that gave them essentially what they wanted, but everyone knows that rule and laws don't apply to Republicans. Republicans are not bound by any social controls.

and you at MSNBC publish the childish whines of the scofflaw Florida Democrats that they shouldn't have been punished when they were warned in advance and violated the rules anyway. But of course, the media would rather publish stories about rule-breakers than about rule followers. More "conflict," of course. This story is unbalanced and far from objective. Did the reporter even bother to ask someone who tried to enforce the rules on the scofflaw Florida Democrats? Apparently not.

Just let the scofflaw Democratic Floridians whine. They caused their own problems, and just because they're left out of the process, well, they have no one to blame but themselves. And come November, it won't make a dime's worth of difference.
The DNC's decision to punish Democrats in Florida is dumb. The DNC took away the power of their own voters and hurt their candidates. The way I see it is if I am a Democrat in Florida, I am going to register as a Republican so my vote will actually count. Then in the general election, the Democratic Party will lose some, if not all, of the voters who where Democrat voters. Very dumb decission.
SPEAKING OF DEMOCRATS, WHERE IS THERE MENTION OF THIS IN THE MEDIA. Let's be fair.

Curious - if I'm a Dem and living in Florida does that mean my vote doesn't count?  What if I prefer Obama over Clinton or vice versa?  My vote then is inconsequential to the outcome in the primary.  Sounds an awful like taxation without representation.  The fact that any states are exclused from the primaries should be illegal.  What happened to the premise of one man one vote?

The common answer I hear is that 'The DNC is making these choices based on...'.  I'm sorry - more politicians making decisions without input from the people - brilliant!

Then again - I guess it doesn't matter what happens in Florida as the ACTUAL candidate with the most votes will NEVER be declared the winner.
Where does the DNC come off punishing the voters?  To punish the DNC all florida Democrats should vote republican.  If it were not for the fact that it would be cutting off our noses to spite our face.

The DNC is not thinking of the voters.  They did not change the primary.  What deals did they make with the other primary states.  How much did they take in graft.
See I never got this. Were the democrats not contend with a sure thing in November. Are they trying to lose again. Michigan and Florida are important for them. I don't see how they can get them back. Especially after Romney had a field day lying his way to a win Michigan.
This is an excellent piece that succinctly sums up this infuriating and insane situation.  Howard Dean did an excellent job of circling up the firing squad, didn't he?  Well, this Florida Democrat voted ANYWAY today and I hope all my fellow FL Dems will as well.  Let's show the Grinch (Howard Dean/the DNC) that he cannot steal Christmas.  We've been disenfranchised once, we sure as heck are not going to allow it again, especially at the hands of our own party.  Vote, vote, vote like you've never voted before.  Record turnout will send a powerful message to the DNC and the nation that Floridians treasure our right to vote and that our voices will be heard.
It's a shame that Florida's democratic voters have been disenfranchised in such a manner. What is more important - an early primary date or the inclusion of our 210 delegates in the democratic process? Our representatives need to start representing us and not themselves!

Yeah, and the Dumbocrats froze themselves out of Michigan for the same reason.  And I thought that the Illinois Republican Party was stupid!
We are hearing there will be 400,000 democratic votes cast and Hillary will grab most of those votes.  If true, that is good for Hillary given she did not campaign there due to the circumstances you outlined.
If the democrats feel that Florida is not a good enough state to at least give them the message that they are important. That was a mistake. What major state votes are needed in the presidental election? When the politions argue like 5-6 graders over themselves and who is who. How can they deal with other countries in our growing world. We can no longer take our ball and go home for we are in this world with many great people not just a few senators ego's. Our country is supposed to be for the people not politians and not just certain states. For the states are run by the people not for certain parties. I can do this or that, doesn't sound very good when your state is becomeing controled by one party. If the democrats have everything figured out why can they only do what our country needs by becoming president. I'll only do this if you make me president if not then you the people will not get what you need. The state of Florida will stand for what it people want not what the democrats want to control.
Apparently Mark Potter fails to realize that the Florida legislature is not run by the Democrats.  It's controlled by the Republicans.  Democrats shot themselves in the foot? I don't think so.
It seems the dems are doing everything they can to get a Republican in the White House (and I am an independant that leans heavily liberal and dem). No campaigning in Florida. A divisive primary. And if they put up HRC as the nomination, what a way to mobilize the Republican base and push swing voters to the Repubs (sorry, can't vote for a Hillary. I need change, not a dynasty!). I would in a heartbeat choose McCain over Clinton. And to think, I would be looking very strongly at Romney, and even Huckabee. HUCKABEE!
I am an independent always have been, but always vote Democrat. The Republicans have made such a mess of the country over the last seven years that it must be a Democrats dream to oppose them. So what do they do but shoot themselves in the foot on a technicality of timing in Florida voting. What on earth are they thinking of or clearly not thinking. The plain stupidity and myopia of our politicians at times is mindboggling.  We cannot sustain another four years of Republicanism, but God help us the Democrats could very well end up giving it to them on a plate, if they continue in that fashion.
The DNC is an embarrassment and shortsighted with Howard Dean running the party.  Florida may just prove to be the pin being pushed into the the presidential voodoo doll for the Dems.....again
This looked like a move by the Republican controlled Florida state house of representatives to tick off the DNC and they fell for it, unfortunately. Moving the primary was all about politicking and had nothing to do with "giving Floridians added clout".
FLorida residents why aren't you watching your legislature more cloesly?  If can't keep an eye on your own state when they pass these ridiculous rules why should we let you mess it up for the rest of us in the National Election?  Then again the DNC is being too harsh to pull all of the democratic tickets.  If you pull one, then you pull the other, don't give one party an advantage over the other.  I'm shocked the courts held this up.  It just shows me more and more that my faith in our governement is eroding and there is favortism over one another.  Nice Job Florida, Nice Job DNC, Nice Job Judicial System.
No one likes Florida anyway.
The DNC and the Fl Democratic Party have done an injustice to voters.  Many democratic voters in my area stayed home because the impression from the media was that democratic votes did not count.  Therefore they missed an opportunity to vote for presidential candidates and more important did not exercise their right as citizens to weigh in on an important ammendment regarding property taxes in Florida.  Democratic officials did nothing to correct these mistaken ideas.
Duuuuuuuuuuh
The only reason I'm still a Democrat in Florida is because Florida is a closed primary state. Now not even that matters because this primary was closed to us by the DNC. I still exercised my right to vote, but I'm incensed that my vote ultimately may not count.
The GOP will do antthing for a vote and the Democrats can always figure out a way to screw it up. Both parties suck but if people would become informed voters they'd see that a vote for the GOP is a vote against their own interests.
