Democrats shut out of Florida

Posted: Tuesday, January 29, 2008 11:06 AM

MIAMI – After enduring the desperate battle over vote counts in the 2000 presidential election debacle – and all the "Flori-DUH" jokes that followed – then fighting over the validity of touch screen voting in the 2004 and 2006 elections, Florida Democrats were eagerly poised for a nice clean shot at 2008. After all, what could possibly go wrong now?

Well, here's exactly what went wrong. In the fourth largest state in the country, with its mother lode of delegates and no shortage of big-money donors, the Democratic candidates are no-shows in the 2008 Florida presidential primary.

VIDEO: The other Florida primary

That left the state wide open to the Republicans, who had a field day in all that open space, and with all that free air-time right before Super Tuesday. For local Democrats there was the sickening realization they may have just shot themselves in the foot with many of the state's famously independent voters come November.

DNC snub
When the Florida legislature voted last spring to move up the Florida primary from March to Jan. 29th, in violation of national party rules, the Democratic National Committee reacted harshly.

To punish Florida, it stripped the state of all 210 of its convention delegates. In order to appease the four approved earlier primary states, the Democratic presidential candidates pledged not to campaign in Florida. All they were allowed to do here was to quickly sneak in and out of private fund-raisers.

While the Republicans also punished Florida, they were much gentler. The national GOP took away half the Florida delegates – leaving a still generous 57 up for grabs – but allowed the Republican candidates to campaign freely here, and as it turned out, without opposition.

A lot of local Democrats thought allowing that to happen was just plain nuts. And two very prominent Democrats even hauled their own national party into federal court.

Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson and Rep. Alcee Hastings argued that in taking away Florida's delegates, and rendering the primary election little more than a beauty contest, the Democratic National Committee was disenfranchising Florida voters.  Hastings claimed the real victims are the people he calls "Joe and Jane Lunch Bucket." Ultimately, they lost that federal case, but the bitter sentiment still resonates.

Just last week, Florida's top Democratic officials once again asked the national party to reconsider, and once again the DNC ignored them. The campaign trail remained cold here for the likes of Sen. Hillary Clinton, Sen. Barack Obama and former Senator John Edwards.

Left with cardboard cut-outs of candidates
So, now there's the odd scenario in Miami-Dade County of a devoted Obama supporter, Dave Patlak, making lots of news by parading around with a life-sized cardboard cut-out of the Illinois senator. He stands at street corners, or outside early polling places and conducts his surrogate campaign, often entertaining crowds by offering them the opportunity to have their pictures taken with "Barack Obama." That's about as good as it gets this time around.

Following up on the 2000 "Flori-duh" jokes, a Miami Herald political cartoonist recently crafted a picture of a "2008 Duh-mocrats" replete with a donkey with a gun to its head symbolizing the Florida ban.

Of course, the Republicans just love this gift. And local Democrats are left to argue gamely that the electorate is still so energized that they expect a record voter turnout.

But from the moment the legislature moved up the primary date, and the Democrats shied away, the process was up-ended – in a state where residents had hoped, naively it appears, that would never happen again.

Does anyone know why the Florida legislature voted to move the primary up in the first place?
DUH. It seems the correct way to handle this would have been for Florida to follow or CHANGE the rules.  That is what we teach our children.  If you don't like the rules, then go through the process to change rather than defy them.  The Republicans should have had integrity enough to follow suit and Florida would have been properly punished for their actions.
This is a great article. I have been relaying the same message to anyone who will listen. I am independent (and very moderate politically) but can't help but notice how rather obstinate and hypocritical the DNC has become. The DNC has disenfranchised voters in several states... on an even larger scale... than it bitterly (and rightfully) complained about in 2000. The DNC's overly-emotional decision... will haunt democratic candidates in the general election.
All the DNC has caused is that I will not be voting for their nominee in the general election. I will vote for the Republican candidate. I will also be changing my party affliation since they have sent a clear message they do not value or want my vote.
Former Life-Long Democrat, Randall Nordby
Another example of Democratic party idiocy.  The Florida Legislature is controlled by REPUBLICANS.  No wonder the threat had no bearing on the decision.

Politics is like sports.  Like it or not, it's about scoreboard, not principles.  The party sacrificed Florida and Michigan, two big states, so as not to anger Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, and South Carolina?  May cost them the election too.  Oh...By the way...I got something from Hillary reminding me to vote for her today.  Guess somebody didn't get the "no campaign" memo.

I voted today for Obama, like it really matters.  Having cast all my votes in the state of Florida, it won't be the first time my vote didn't matter, and sadly, probably not the last.

It's time the national committees get knocked down to size. It is unconstitutional to disenfranchise voters. Even if the state Democratic and Republican parties violated National scheduling rules. At the very least, both Michigan and Florida Democrats should be allowed their regularly scheduled voting date. Further, it's insane to allow the Republicans some of their voting power, but to allow the Democrats none. The National committees need to bend here.
Democrats need to seat the delegates and award them to who ever wins Florida's Democratic Primary.

We need a President who will represent all 50 states!

Democrats NEED FL and MI

Clinton WON Michigan 51% to 40%, but the media is down playing it!!!!

Clinton will WIN Florida, but the media will downplay that too!!!

The bias is so obvious, I feel like I am in the Soviet Union or Nazi Germany with the Propaganda--"Fair and Balanced"--NOT!!!

Clinton will win, despite the pro-Obama media!!

Oh, by the way, 3 KENNEDY'S endorsed Clinton--but you will NEVER hear about it!!!

Clinton has rallys of THOUSANDS of supports, but you will only hear about Obama's big crowds.

Clinton is cqampaigning accross the country, but the media only reports on Obama's where abouts.

Clinton has received over 100 HUGE endorsements and Union endorsement, but if ONE person endorses Obama it is the front page of every newspaper and lead story on TV news.

All I have to say is, WOW!!!!

The Florida Democratic legistlature should not have broken DNC rules and left the primary date alone. Even if no there was no penalty from the DNC what would they have gained by moving the primary up? Nothing.
Perhaps in four years they can abide the same DNC rules as everyone else rather than make up their own.
As for the complaints that democratic voters wont be heard, well they have the general election to vote for the Democratic candidate we pick.
I was personally astounded at the lunacy of the DNC's decision to rob Florida's Democrats of a voice in the primary elections.  Any reasoning mind would be left flabbergasted and mystified. At the same time that we tout American Democracy as the model process for others to emulate around the world, we have disenfranchised our own - and this action has elicited a bitter taste in the mouths of Florida Democrats, our voices and votes silent and weightless in America.
Absolutely hilarious. I may be a part of the GOP but this years presidential race on paper seems very one sided towards the Dems.  That is until they run their campaigns.  Why piss off the forth largest state in the union.  It just seems like the GOP just runs a much tighter ship, which could allow them to pull off an upset.
FLORIDA DEMOCRATIC VOTERS OUT IN FORCE
Having just returned from voting at my precinct in Hollywood, Florida I can tell you while it won't count delegate-wise, the most people to express an opinion about a candidate, Republican or Democrat to date in this election (yes, Florida will produce more Democratic AND Republican Votes than Iowa, NH, Nevada and South Carolina combined) are making their preference known today. It would be stupid for the rest of the nation and the two parties not to take notice and give more "voice" to those that are wanting their voices heard.
GO GOP!  You have got to be kidding, I would never put control of our country the the hands of Obama who has no experience and won't say really what he would do.  Hilary are you kidding, again our country deserves better than any democrat.
All though Hillary will certainly attempt to have the delegates reinstated, it would be completely foolish for the DNC to do so.  There would be a severe backlash by Obama supporters if Hillary was to win the nomination because the two states delegates where reinstated.  I really think if MI and FL gave Hillary the nomination, it would lose her the Whitehouse.
Primaries are very important this year than ever since they have been very close. It is hypocritical of DNC to say "every vote counts" when Supreme Court stopped Florida on counting the vote in 2000, and now they do the same. Politics here have been big money making machine for the few.
Maybe they should change their name to the 'Dumbacrats'! What a foolish thing to do - just give a state to the Republicans.  And for what?  To appease a couple of small states whose electoral college count isn't even half of Florida's?  The Republicans will be laughing all the way to the White House!
What the DNC did to Florida is a joke and will come back to haunt them if their delegates are not seated.  It will also be interesting to see how the pundits handle this as they stated Michigan did not matter but then super analyzed the results anyhow.
I don't understand what the big deal is. So the Primary got moved, does this give them the right to strip the party of its delegates? I ten to vote repulican, but I don"t think it is fair for all the delegates to lose out.
dems always think of a new way to  lose with all the adds and money going into the state what chance do the people have to meet the democrats.
Wish that were NY.
The article's title is misleading. No Democrat was 'shut out' of anything. The Democrats shut themselves out. They'll pay for it come November, just like they did in Michigan.
Message to the DNC: Excellent job! - You idiots have now disenfranchised more voters in Florida and Michigan. It is getting to the point that "no one cares" about the DNC or the candidates (especially the Clintons and the political hate machine. The simple truth is the wheels are coming off the wagon for the DNC and what's worse is they don't even know it! This is the last big bang for the DNC.
The Democrats should just forget about Florida anyway. These are the same folks that let George Bush steal the election in 2000 and then STILL voted for him again in 2004. All this whining about being disenfranchised but they voted a second time for the guy who stole their votes. Flori-DUH pretty much says it all.
Vote Edwards.......
boo hoo hoo! The Dems are whining again about disenfranchisement and a GOP conspiracy.    You need to find new excuse for your idiocy; this one is all played out.   It was the DNC who stripped Florida and disenfranchised the Dem voters.  Dem politicians even filed suit against the DNC, but if it makes you feel better to whine about the GOP again, have at it.

Florida did it to themselves in their quest to be relevant.  Maybe Florida and Michigan should file suit against all the states that moved their primaries and caused this massive reshuffling for self-importance.
Maybe we should launch the biggest class action suit in history and sue all of them for excruciatingly & painfully prolonging the primary process, putting all of America's mental health at risk!

Saw my first Obama commercial in Arizona where he talks about how his poor mother was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago and rather than caring for her health, she was consumed with how to pay the bills.  The commercial is so phoney, you have to ask yourself why with such a successful son was her greatest worry the cost of prescriptions and treatment?
Was she all on her own? ~  What kind of son does that make him?

Hillary is worse, her commercials tout how she cares about everyone... BS, the only thing the Clintons care about is Power, and whatever silver and china they missed pilfering the first time in the Whitehouse.  Even funnier, now suddenly she's got 35 years of experience, experience in what? Conning and conniving?
Thank goodness the GOP commercials haven't started yet. Something tells me McCains's ego has him convinced he doesn't need to campaign in Arizona.  Apparently he's forgetting we almost recalled him in 2001 and 9/11 is the only thing that saved him.  Hey, there's a campaign commercial....

From Recall to Republican Primaries
McCain - the stench that just won't go away!
I believe the DNC went overboard in telling the Florida DC not to bother sending a delegation to the national convention.
My nephew died in Iraq, so yes I will vote.I will be heard and I will count...
A couple of points that need to be cleared up:

1) The person who wrote about "scofflaws" has no idea about what the word means. A "scofflaw" is literally one who ignores an established law. The Florida primary was moved up by the Florida LEGISLATURE ... You know, the folks who actually set the election laws in Florida? Doing so was perfectly legal. What was violated was not any "law" ... just a Democratic party "rule" ... and the DNC promptly shot every Florida Democrat right in the foot just to prove they were in charge. The Republicans were at least smart enough to use a bit of vaseline.

2) No one was "disenfranchised". Your "franchise" is your right to vote in the general election. In truth, while these primaries have become ensconsed in our election system, the Republican and Democratic "parties" are really just a bunch of people who agree to back one particular candidate ... and the "primaries" are just their formal way of picking who to back. The primary winners win no office. So ... Floridians can still vote in the general election for the candidate of their choice, and neither the DNC nor the RNC have a thing to say about it.

3) Blaming the "Republican" legislature. Wake up guys. The Florida Legislature was simply trying to give Florida the political clout that it deserves.  Moving up the election was PERFECTLY LEGAL. And as for it being some "republican plot" to "disenfranchise" democrats, that's a lot of typical self pitying DEMOCRAT BS. Get it right people, it was the DNC ...the DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL COMMITTEE ... not the Republicans ... that decided to take away your votes in the democratic primary. They didn't have to do so. Your own party shafts you, yet many of you SOMEHOW still want to blame the Republicans. Will you people EVER take responsibility for anything?
Rick B (and all others who think the Democrats decided to change the primary date) - the Florida legislature, controlled by the Republicans with the help of Jeb Bush, passed the law over the objection of the Democratic legislators.
As a registered Florida Democrat, I'm upset that the DNC has stripped away all our delegates. The Republican party at least issued a more favorable penalty for their voters. It definitely effected my vote today as Hillary seems to be the only candidate to at least acknowledge that our votes should count and will work for reinstatement of our delegates.
FLORIDA IS COMPRISED OF A BUNCH OF IDIOTS!! I AGREE WITH YOU CAL...ANY GROUP OF PEOPLE THAT LETS A MAN STEAL THE ELECTION IN 2000 THEN VOTE HIM BACK IN IN '04 SHOULDN'T GET A VOTE, PERIOD!
I would appreciate people limiting their discussion to the issues, rather than make disparaging comments about Floridians in general. If I could afford to move anywhere else, I probably would. When our legislature was told of the consequences if they moved the primary, then the decision should have been made a referendum for the public to decide. Unfortunately, they did not and we all have suffered for it. As for the DNC punishing Florida, again the punishment was swift, severe and largely unjustified. When so much hangs in the balance, it is foolish to alienate so many voters in order to teach elected officials a "lesson." What exactly were Floridians supposed to do. Our only remedy is to vote as I did so that my voice may still be heard (though not counted) and make some changes in the next election when it is already too late. The whole system is bloated and crumbling under its own self important weight and it is the citizens that suffer for it. Maybe we would fair better as a true, rather than representative democracy. It is truly a miracle that Florida democrats continue to persevere despite national scrutiny and ridicule, even by those in our own party. Never before have I felt that my opinion mattered so little. Shame on the DNC.
Incidentally, it is worth clarifying several things.

1) Republicans do control the Florida Legislature. It was the Legislature that moved the date of the primary.

2) Florida's Democratic Party did consider moving their primary back to February, but there is an important constitutional amendment concerning property taxes on the Jan. 29 ballot. It was decided that moving the Democratic primary could be detrimental since Democratic voters might not turn out to cast their ballots on the amendment.

3) The U.S. Constitution makes no mention of political parties -- they were a later creation. The parties are like private clubs -- very powerful ones -- that can make their own rules. Therefore they can get away with all kinds of shenanigans in the primaries that wouldn't fly in the general election.

The Florida Democrats were put in an untenable position by a Republican Legislature, and they got absolutely no sympathy from the DNC, from what I can gather.

It doesn't change the fact that I'm disgusted with both the state and national party for throwing away my vote and thousands of other Florida votes because of a petty calendar squabble.
Given that the Electoral sustem of voting is crammed down our throats and we are forced to have reresentitives vote for us. Instead of a popular vote that is truely Democratic. I submit that the DNC is violating the Constitutional rights of the Florida Democrats.  The comment made by Jeffery from Lexington, NC.questioning if their may be some agenda may have some merit and where the hel* is the ACLU when you need them.
Democrats of Florida: Democratic State legislators gave enough power to the Republicans’ initiative so that, with an earlier primary, they would all be feted and sought after. You let them get away with that because they hinted on the economic gains to be had. Sometimes a bad deed deserves punishment. In the best case, a punishment should fit the misdeed; play games with democracy and you loose the right to enjoy it. Time out.
As a FL Dem, I'm pissed at the DNC.  The Republican dominated legislature changed the date along with a republican governor. It's a lose, lose proposition.  What do you do? FIRE DEAN, NO MORE MONEY FOR THE DNC AND NO MORE POLITCAL CONTRIBUTION and vote anyway. BTW, we have a constitutional amendment that affects our property taxes.
If Floridans are angry about this, they need to blame their legislature not the DNC.
What in the world is going on?  Punishing the voters??
By he by, veryone is talking today abou the photograph where Obama's head is turned.  If you really want to see a snub, find the recoding of last year;s state of the union speech.  Somehow it happened that they were seated abou the same place one row apart.  Hillary's look at Obama was the coldest, most condescending that she is capable of.  I so not ant to see her with foreign dignitaries.  She may be smart and strong but she has little control over her emotions.
Hillary is trying to get Florida's delegates votes to count and I couldn't agree more. The DNC was stupid to do what they did. The price will be paid in the general election.
The Clinton camp today renewed efforts to force the Democratic party to recognize the outcome of the Florida primary and allow the state's 185 delegates to be counted in a tight race.

Florida Beauty contest as described in the Media?

http://www.youpolls.com/details.asp?pid=1654

.
Maybe, the Florida Democrats should answer in kind to the DNC and send our future Delegates to vote Republican Next time around, even if the Democrats take the state
I like Hillary tries to reach out to FL and the press rakes her for it lifts Obama up on a thrown for calling it a beauty pageant over and over.  Suggestion is that Hillary is being political and Obama is being genuine.  Please!!  Obama is being political.. he's behind in the polls and doesn't anyone paying any attention to FL.  At least Clinton has the brains to realize this is the last state you want to alienate going into an election!
Dems are the ones who think that rules do not apply to them, not the Republicians.  It is just the typical poor me.
It's time for Howard Dean to go! We have had to endure eight years of this arrogant administration, and now the head of the national commitee won't seat our delegates? Stupid.
Why is there no coverage of the Democratic "primary" on MSNBC?  CNN is posting both Republican and Democratic primary results on the bottom of the screen.  The people of Florida have a right to have their voices heard, even if the DNC made a huge mistake and disenfranchised hundreds of thousands of voters.  This is America, isn't it?  Beauty contest or not, it is important to see who the people prefer in Florida on BOTH sides!
Sounds like a damn catch twenty two. I just love that we have bombed, invaded, occupied, spending billions of dollars, and that mothers, sons, daughters, fathers, loved ones, are giving their lives, limbs, and faces  to spread our wonderful corrupt democracy. We are a mess.
It's amazing that the central committee (DNC) has decided that Michigan's and Florida's votes don't count because they did not follow the party line. They are a party of the people = right. So was Stalin's party one of the people.  Let the drooling fool who is the party chairman disinfranchise the slaves who don't step in line. I am still going to decide when the final vote comes to be and they won't buy my vote.
Both Michigan and Florida deserve to be striped of their delegates.  They knew they were going against the wishes of the National parties and did it anyway.  If the National parties don't put and end to all the moving around then it will be changing ever year forever.  Not everyone can be first.....there are 50 states..........are all 50 gonna fight for position every year?

my only problem is that the Republican and Democratic parties didn't take the same course of action.  The National Republican party wimped out....all delegates should have been removed from both parties
If MSNBCis going to ignore 100,000's Florida Democrats, I guess I'll ignore MSNBC - good night and good bye - go to CNN for real coverage of the Florida election.
It is not fair to leave florida folks behind. Remeber we just past the bill "No kids left behind". That is a law. The DNC violates the law. Sue it to supeme court. Let Justices vote to choose a GOP as a president (not Bush) again this year. hehe
That is what happens when you get an idiot like Howard Dean as a chairman of the national democratic party. Did vote in Florida early vote two weeks ago. To the National party bite me, dont cry when you lose the election and want our votes.
