What an absolute joke!  Global warming, er.. climate change due to man is a myth..  There are an equal number of climate experts with facts that spit in the face of the Gore-bot's opinions as to whom and what is causing the cyclical changes in climate.  Funny how the loony left thinks terrorism is made up but climate change is undeniably real.  Spare me the ‘facts’ er.. opinions you enviro-retards are going to push.  I have more than enough scientific fact to blow any of your so-called truths out of the water.  I’m going to turn every light on and run my car just in spite of this idiotic event.  What a riot!!  LOL!!
"will turn off along with all other non-essential lighting"  if they are not needed why use them in the first place ?
Good.  If you aren't using a room in your house, don't you turn off the light?  To save energy and your electric bill?  Makes sense to me. I think they should turn off more lights.
I think this is an AMAZING idea!  I wish Cleveland or Columbus would have been in on it, as I am from Ohio.  It is so refreshing to see people trying to right the wrongs we have done to our planet over the last century.  Critics watch out - next year maybe the list will top 500!
well, i think that this is wonderful, if it can help with the WWF then all the power, no pun intended, to them that have thought of it, one of our Canadian cities is doing it, just wish the one i live in would participate, would like to see the stars again, and sit out in the dark, with candles like the old days, was neat when we had the black out years back, anyways it is for a good cause, God bless who ever thougth of this, Lee
Fabulous Idea, remmber when some hippie guru which I will not name here said that if we could get 10 million people to sit in silent meditation for 1 hour all at the same time that world peace would come? I am for anything that makes people think, and perhaps sitting in the dark is one very good way to make that happen. Don't panic folks it won't kill you to turn off the TV, Computer, lights and music...the world was turning long before any of that and people found plenty of things to do in the dark!!!!And who knows while sitting in the dark a few people might actually get the idea that we could live much more simply and life would be much more far if we did!!!
dear White Guy, I'm curious as to why you don't cite sources any of your scientific fact instead you rely on insults and made up words to express an extremely emotionally charged point of view. Your extreme emotionalism is not indicative of someone who routinely relies on fact based information to make decisions.
I think it's a wonderful idea. Wish they would do it in Maine. We're all spoiled--if we can't flick a light and use a remote plus push buttons, we go in a panic. A lot of this has to do with global warming
Even if it doesn't help global warming as some of the other people mentioned, its a great concept and good practice for the younger generation who carelessly uses and abuses electricity use and other natural resources.  Children are brought up in a world today where they think the supply is never ending.

The facebook group, "Where I've Been" is also taking action and has asked members to participate in the lights out as well!
whiteidiotdancing:
It's easy to sit on the sidelines and criticize others' actions.  It also makes you seem tough and manly.  I expecially like your take on what the looney left think.  I'll look for you as a source for what "they" think, rather than ask "them."  Also, you really are helping you own cause by using energy for spite.  I think the looney left must also believe that increased demand for energy sources increase prices.  What will "they" think of next.
R
This is one of the dumbest ideas I've ever heard of. It is comparable to the "don't fill up on gas next tuesday, so we can put a dent on oil consumption" e-mails that get sent around by people who don't know any better. Tell you what, why don't the geniuses who think of this stuff go over to Iraq and Afghanistan and promote a "peace hour" when no one fires a weapon for an hour! They would laugh their butts off!! Especially because these are the same people that tie up our troop's hands and then send them to fight!Spend  your resources on fixing our countries real problems: the economy, unemployment, health care, and leave the myths and b.s alone.
There are some really "interesting" people AND opinions out there, such as global warming being a myth and reducing electrical consumption won't save the planet. Man, where are these American morans get off? This country is full of stupid people who think only of themselves and their own desires. What about the planet as a whole? We, the US of A, consume more fossil fuels than any other nation in the world!! We also are considered the LARGEST producer of pollution, you know that funky stuff in the air that makes it hard for you to breathe or that makes water undrinkable, in the WORLD! We as Americans need to realize we can't be isolationists any more. That ended a long time ago. Face it. We are a part of a global society, whether we like it or not. EVERYTHING we do has an impact on the world around, which in turn impacts other people. Think about that next time you decide to throw trash out your car window or pour chemicals on your lawn. All of that has an impact on our environment and our planet. I personally do not want to live in a trash heap, which is what we will have if people don't recycle, reuse, or reduce their consumption of disposable goods.
I encourage MSNBC to lead by example and go dark instead of wasting energy on infomerials
This is a great idea!  Even if one does not beleive in enviormental changes caused by man.  For one i do not, but i do beleive we all need to be more consciences of our environment.
Isn't it amazing that when there is an objection to something like this, the person objecting resorts to name calling and using words like "retard"? Obviously a chord has been struck which rings true - otherwise why resort to this language? Of course, WGD, you are free to do as you please. Me? I'll have candles a-glow!
Who really cares?  I (along with everyone currently alive) will be dust in the wind by the time anything major happens to this Earth anyway :)  I say leave all the lights on you want.
Just because your city isn't participating, doesn't mean you can't participate. Just turn off the lights... it's easy.
W.G.D. i agree with u for the most part btw, though you did come across as rather extreme, be careful what you say in the future
d, just because it isnt 'necessary' doesnt mean it isnt helpful, comfortable or productive...
trianna that's true but really has nothing to do with turning off ALL the lights i a city for an hour...
courtney please stop blindly accepting environmentalist propaganda (since that is essentially what it is), and do research onboth sides of the argument before claiming we've seriously damaged the ecosystem in the last century (environmentalists would say it's been since the industrial rev. 2 centuries ago anyway, btw)
and leona what you're referring to is light pollution, which by itself is not a hazard to anyone... wasting money and potentially lives is not justified by a want to see the stars, when you can go to a more remote area much more easily...
I believe Global warming is a myth.  I live in a town in Missouri where the temperature this winter was 10 degrees below normal.  I also think turning out the lights for an hour will give those who participate the ability to view the night sky as it was meant to be viewed.  If this were done between 9 and 10PM you would get a better view.
I think it's a good idea. My concern is there are a lot of folks around who will see this as a great opportunity to perpetrate mischief.

A questionm though: It may make sense for parts of Manhattan to be brightly lit 24/7, but is it necessary for Joe's Used Cars (7 available) in West Overshoe, Montana, to be similarly lit?
Well first off, everyone can do it... Go to your main and turn it off for one hour... and for the right wing ding bat who thinks of himself and how wasteful he can be... You can see what us humans are doing to our planet all in the name of being lazy... Why dont you get off your lazy behind and walk to work a couple times a week.  There is so much we all can do to cut cost and save for our children.  PEACE
@White Guy Dancing

No, there is not "an equal number of climate experts with facts that spit in the face of the Gore-bot's opinions as to whom and what is causing the cyclical changes in climate"

That said, this is an excellent awareness-raising event, but the impacts on greenhouse gasses will be minimal, I am sure.
hey, i agree whit White Guy Dancing, it is true, all gore even showed it on his graph in the book incoveniant truth that gree house gasses have been at much higher lvlvs and the enviroment has had worse golbal warming happen before and yet u dumb asses still swallow this shit lol LMFAO
What a great idea to raise awareness to human overconsumption of everything on this planet.  I'm glad to know there is still intelligent life around.  I'll be doing my part!!!
Has anyone else noticed that all of the "solutions" to global warming are straight out of either an environmentalist or Liberal rant? Conserve energy, aborting children so that they don't leave a—gasp—carbon-footprint, get rid of SUVs, tax people to hell and back, etc... I heard a really good line a few weeks ago on the radio that applies—they've had the solution all along, they just needed the question. The question: How do we stop Global Warming? Convenient, no?
I wonder if "White Guy Dancing" is out there on the Griffin Ice Shelf doing his dance.  Perhaps he would like to explain away the demise of the polar bear or the loss of the snow on Kilamanjaro.
The world needs to begin to become more aware of the danger we face and if we can bring about awareness through efforts like this, then "bring 'em on".
The photo's you supplied are completely misleading.  If you overlay them on top of each other and flip between them, you can see that very few lights (outside of the bridge and the opera house) were turned off.  Here's a quick physics quiz for all the supporters of the so called "Earth Hour":  If the lights are off, but the power generation station is still running, was anything really saved?
I don't have to agree with all the reason for doing this, but I think it is a good idea. Without a doubt lights use electricity and generate heat. Conserving energy, and becoming energy efficient makes good cent$!! I do agree we have far too much glitter glitz in the night sky.
I expect the criminals will love this.  Get ready for a one hour crime spree.
For those that may object to this event: even if you do not agree with the theory of climate change, it is important to understand that things being done to fix climate change are not bad for the planet...turning off the lights will further reserve our recourses.  Coal (the way most of the power in the United States is powered) is not only warming the planet, but in order to mine it they are literally flattening mountains, which is leading to devastating environmental conditions check it out: http://ilovemountains.org/

I love the idea of earth hour
I think this is wonderful.  Hopefully more cities will begin to participate in the future.  I am from the Dallas/Fort Worth area in Texas, and I would love for our cities to participate.  With as much as we are contributing to polution, it would be nice to do something good for the environment.
One hour per year, Nice; one hour every day - Better.  So much to consider, like security alarms, hospital equipment...we are soooo dependent.
Ok Mr White Guy Dancing but too much light and misdirected light is still pollution:

GLOBAL WARMING HA HA HA !!!!!  WHAT A JOKE
its great when people jump on here to rip on conservationists for questionable science, maybe its not even about that.  why not conserve energy, there's no use in wasting it.  do you espouse wasting energy because its "the american way?"  people may or may not be causing global warming, there's nothing wrong with conserving instead of wasting.  maybe some people would be best to conserve their words...
allow concealed carry, enforce curfews, allow parents to spank their kids and bring back the death penalty...then we can turn off 75% of the night time security lighting, and maybe more!!
I love how people throw hard effort, reproducible, peer reviewed scientific facts out the window in favor of unprovable, rhetoric driven, non reviewed "science" when they don't like what the numbers show.  All of the living Nobel Prize Winners in the Sciences agree that recent decades show a clear break from the planet's natural history.  If it isn't a man made phenomenon, then prove the opposite, using observations anyone can reproduce independently to show that it is due to something else.  "Gore-bot" didn't invent the science, he just publicized it. Like him or not, it's not his findings that matter it's the published references behind his movie that matter.  Disprove those before questioning the work of people who actually worked to prove their points of view.  And just saying something repeatedly doesn't count as disproving mathematically sound research, it counts as playground politics and has no place in sober, serious discussion.
May I suggest that "White Guy Dancing" run his car all night long and then pay the $80 to refill the tank.

Tir na nOg
Take a ride in a small plane and view the smog layer and the way it covers a city like a blanket.  It's fascinating to see and it certainly lends credence to the thinking that pollution and particulate matter could  cause evironmental changes.  I'm conservative but shocked at the people who think it's a nonsensical idea.  To me, it is only logical.
What a load of crap Global warming was just a Y2k bug its not real.

I turned on every light in my house and every electric heater I could find in protest of the global warming scam.
this is a pretty cool milestone in history, within a few years this could become a global event. kind of like a planetary stadium wave to the cosmos. i bet it would look cool from orbit.
If you want to emphasize what a city looks like at night with all the lights out, then look at Pyongyang, North Korea. That's everynight of the year. Be thankful you have lights to turn off.,
White Guy Dancing, you are one tremendous moron. If you think that man hasn't had any effect on the planet and that climatic change is simply a myth, then why are species dieing off by the hundreds. Why is the Antarctic ice shelf shedding more and more ice each year? Why are the levels of the earths oceans rising? Certainly your 'facts' are more true than those of leading scientists worldwide.
I suppose that you think the US economy is flying strong too.
Wake up and smell the insecticide laden coffee you no doubt drink. Perhaps you don't care enough about the world for yourself, but what of your children and children's children? Do you wish to condemn your progeny to an early end?
While you're running all your lights and wasting resources running the engine of your SUV, why not do it in the privacy of your garage? At least then the only air you pollute will be yours.
ridiculous! you people want to change the world and save our air? stop driving those huge SUV's and pickups, drive your 4 cyl or hybrid only when needed and ride bike. Burn wood for heat, or better yet, wear a sweater and turn heat off. Best idea is here, save your garbage and use it for fuel in your Mr. Fusion!!!!
LET'S DO THIS MORE OFTEN !!!
I like others have been "doing my part in cutting back" replacing light bulbs with cfl ones, turning down the heat, turning up the air conditioning, turning off the lights, and turning off everything else.  What has it gotten me?  Bigger bills!!! That is what it has gotten me!!!  I have used less energy both in wattage and natural gas but my bills keep going up up up!!!  Gee go figure!!!  But I look at the sky scrapers in downtown Seattle, the Seattle skyline, and the entire Puget sound, the so called Evergreen state, the "Green" tree hugging state, and the lights are on everywhere you could go blind from them.  Then talk about the heat they waste here, you almost die when you walk into the stores from the heat blasting you in the face.  The same in city hall, public buildings, libraries, everywhere you go full blast it's going.  So much for being green when it comes to conserving.  There was some conserving for a while after the initial September 11, 2001 attacks but then it was back to business as normal. We need to start fining these large business for leaving on their lights needlessly, I can see it if someone is working and having some on for security reasons.  Also those needed for height reasons for aircraft and traffic etc. but nothing else is needed. Another of my all time favorites for Seattle area, was going through a fast food drive thru, noticed their lawn pop up sprinklers were going full blast,(it was pouring down rain and had been all week long)I brought this to their attention, the manager said, "It is controlled from Atlanta and we can't do anything about it from here"!!!  Got to love it don't ya!!  Good luck on saving the earth you will need it in Seattle!!!!
I'm 19, part of the future generation. I think this is such a great idea. I've been trying the past couple day to let everyone know about this. I can't WAIT to see the results. :) looking forward to it, I'll be in my room with relaxing with candles in the dark. Its only for 1 hour people! you can do it.

No comments. By my comment nothing is going to change. The event will still occur irrespective of my comment. Let them enjoy and let them experiment.
who cares if its true or not? the fact that so many are concerned about the fate of the world is a positive sign, and while one hour is small sacrifice to make it is none the less something that will bring more publicity to the positive action we can take.

all i can say to the first poster is thus: there is just as much science contradicting your theories as there is supporting it. even if we are all wrong, isnt it worth a try?

15 minutes to go, and i cant wait to see the stars again...
