Lights out for Earth Hour

Really want to see an energy reduction?  Turn off all the HDTV sets (average power consumption=550 watts) in the world for one hour.  Shut down your workstation/computer when you leave the office each evening.  Lower your thermostat 2 degrees in winter, raise it 2 degrees in summer.Let dishes air dry in your dishwasher.  Combine laundry loads.  THINK!
All non-essential lighting should ALWAYS be turned off!  Think about it.  The key word here is non-essential.
If turning out the light sends a message so be it. I think that installing the solar panels on all new homes being built and on established housing makes more sense. Lets use the sun to generate the light and as the Navajo's in AZ are planning the wind mills to generate the power they need. Over thirdty years ago the government did not want to assist with educating the people on solar or the wind mills which generate power as that would have offended big business and thier big buck kick backs so the people pay. If everyone installed solar panels in thier homes a great portion of the world would be using negative electrical and the power company would be buying and paying them for the power.
I think its a great idea. In my house we always try to turn off lights when we are not using them but now the world is going to turn off everything. This is somthing that should happen more often.
I pretty much agree with the comments of White Guy Dancing.I'm sure climate change is taking place but I don't think man is causing it.AS for cities tuning out their lights I think it's silly.
I think this is a brilliant idea!  What better way for people and organizations such as WWF to make a point and raise awareness towards global warming/green-house gas emissions and protecting the environment.
It is true that many of us do waste tons of electricity through the use of non-esential lighting.  We should cut back on the use and in the process maybe be able to save little cash that would otherwise go toward the electric bill, etc.
And the cows will continue to fart, wasn't it all there fault anyway?
I knew of this event via my newsletter from WWF, & passed the word along at work & to friends & family. I also attempted to have the local newspaper run a story, but they failed to follow thru. I guess it's more important run an advertizement than care about our planet! Some outlying area towns & cities are honoring 'Earth Hour'. I wish i lived in one of them. I am turning off ALL my electric power. I hope masses of people read this NBC article & see the importance of this event. It is such a small thing to do for our planet. I applaud all countries & cities who care enough to turn off their power, at 'Earth Hour'
OK White Guy Dancing...excluding the "myth" of climate change (yeah, it's been a cyclical event throughout time)...what about plain old-fashioned POLLUTION...or do you particularly LIKE smog in your city?  Can't tell me us humans aren't to blame for THAT...
White Guy Dancing has the same wasteful mentality that has us struggling to find enough landfill space and has many water supplies in danger.  It's possible that he's right about the science of global warming, but he can't deny that every person on the planet has a negative impact on the environment and should strive to minimize that impact.  The fact that he's willing to pay more on his electric bill and his fuel bill just to spite this event exposes the depth (or lack thereof) of his thinking.  It's no wonder that he doesn't give his real name.
My father, who was a wise old farmer, believed in conservation long before the "green" craze, had his picture and story in the local newspaper for building one of the first "earth homes" in our area back in the 1970's.  We used to play a game (pre-play station) called, "what would happen if..."  We always wondered what would happen if every consumer in the country would turn off their electricity for one day?  Would it be enough to drive the corporate electric bills (even back then) down significantly for consumers?  I think as one consumer desiring a lower electric bill, I will just shut my lights off tonight for giggles.
i'm going to turn every light on in my house at earth hour in protest. People are so gullible the WWF is a antihuman organization.  So many people jumped on this global whining without questioning it!! If it were true humans would be better off. the majority of the human population lives in a warm climate.
It's another typical "feel-good" liberal stunt that means nothing, except a whole lot of people have swallowed Algore's B.S. The actual SCIENCE says we are more likely to experience global cooling!
I think that this is great. I has always believed that if people truly would do this not only for the green effect but to protest to all the oil and electrical and gas companies we would not be at the mercy of these giants. We could help the enviroment and make the fuel prices go down. If you don't use it then prices will go down.
White Guy Dancing,
I would like for my kids and grandkids to see the sky and that will only happen if people like you will turn off their lights during Earth Hour and cut down on gas emissions.  And the greenhouse effect IS related to humans because, in case you were asleep in history class in junior high, there was no pollution in North America until the human race decided to become technologically advanced and invented things such as cars that run on carbon gas, factories that spew tons of pollutants, and lights that require more energy than the earth can provide for us right now. The rising gas prices have to do with that, too, because humans are requiring so much gas that we have cut our gas supply in more than half.  If we turn off cars AND lights during Earth Hour, I know that we could cut those gas prices and emissions down.  I love the fact that human race is trying to make a comeback for all the wrongs that they have done in the past century.
Well there has to be an idiot in every crowd... like "White Guy Dancing."  Yes everything in life is a conspiracy ... and the depleted ozone, disappearing glaciers and drsmatic climate changes around the world have nothing to do with coal burining power plants, gas guzzler Hummers and jets filling the skies.  Wake up you fool!  You may not care about what state we leave our planet in for our children but the rest of us rational beings do!  I'm turning all the power off in my house even though my town isn't participating!  Every little bit helps.
While I agree with White Guy Dancing that the enviro-emergency is in reality an enviro-lie made up so the feel-good, its-always-mans-fault, Im-ok-youre-ok screamin' liberals can force more of their opinions on us as laws, I do like the idea of saving energy, savings costs (we have to pay the taxes that light up all those city lights), and seeing the stars again.  Just the facts, ma'am!
Perhaps, the lights out activity is not so much for this cutting down on global warming;but, rather making people more aware of the state of our world.Any means of doing this is a positive step.Resources are not a bottomless pit.At some point we will be reacting too late to reverse or even stop the change.Does surprise me that WWF had to think of this activity.Hats off to them.Never heard of this until today.Would like to see more cities in my country doing the same.
I was just browsing around this morning and discovered Earth Hour.  I hadn't heard a thing about this on the news.  What a great idea. Imagine if ALL of the major cities in the world could have a 10 percent drop in energy usage. Obviously, one hour is not the solution to the problem.  And the problem is not whether or not there IS global warming.  The problem is that we are a wasteful society.  Scientists may not agree on the issue of global warming, but experts do agree that we have limited non-renewable resources.  I see Earth Hour as just one creative response to limit our usage of those resources.
This is a very small thing that can make a big difference.  I am a kindergarten teacher who sees an increasing amount of apathetic children and parents. I am seeing humanity being flushed down the toilet for the almighty currencey.  One hour is little to ask to help make children aware that this is their planet and that they will be the custodians of it for future generations.
I think it's a great idea!! I'm making sure my whole family paticipates and that they understand why. God made this beautiful planet to live on and we are certainly destroying it. As for White Guy Dancing how are you going to explain to your grand children or great grandchildren why they have inherited a planet with no more natural resources, coastal land thats under water because of glacier melting, extinct animals that they will never be able to see because thier environment was destroyed, polluted air they will be forced to breath, drinking water that's so contaminated that it will  make them sicker than healtier, and lets not forget all the mercury in our fish and pesticides on our food. At the rate we are going each and everyone of us should be ashamed of what we are leaving the next couple of generations to live with, maybe they will be able to fix what we screwed up. But it's a pity that they should have to cause we are not being responsible for our own actions. I'm at least trying to make an effort, as small as it is, I hope billions of people make one small sacrifice, to take one small step to help right the wrongs we have done to this planet Earth which we call home.
Well the positive is that Al Gore won't be wasting any energy for an hour.  Could save him a huge chunk of change on carbon credit too.  Oh wait maybe not.
The first guy is a moron!I hope his car blows up when he turns it on at 8:00.     Anyway I think its a great idea and I will turn off my lights today at 8. I hope Hartford Connecticut and many other cities will join next year I know I will.
Whether you believe in global warming or not shouldn't be the reason you participate!  How about conserving energy for conserving energy sake!!!

We should do the same thing with driving-can you imagine the amount of gas you could save?  Just don't drive for "one hour"-Everyone at the exact same moment!!!  What a feat that would be-If people could just not be selfish or self centered for 1 hour it would be a wonderful thing to accomplish.
White Guy Dancing, what's your data? If you are telling me that excessive fossil fuel consumption is not hurting the environment and contributing to global warming then you need to quit thinking along party lines and get your facts straight. This isn't a leftist/rightist issue. Furthermore, I don't think that anyone on the "loony left" has ever said that terrorism was made up...that is a laughable statement. Perhaps they have questioned the motivations of that terrorism and the ways in which it is being counteracted. I know you are frustrated that more and more people are looking towards the facts that the IPCC has demonstrated and have come to recognize global warming as a real, man-made issue. This isn't about obstructing your civil liberties. It isn't about your political views. Its about protecting our planet. Why don't you see the importance in that?
Great idea! Figures Orlando isn't involved in this...
Great to see more people excited about this and not so many idiot's like "white little man dancing"...
what an idiot!
White guy dancing....you have a great gift of pushing buttons. I'd like to know where you see our planet's development 10 years from now if we do NOTHING. Where is your scientific evidence you speak of to support otherwise, did you see it on FOX news?  (and aren't you aware, that it is a  proven fact that, I guess what you would call 'the right', is espousing media energy and money to say otherwise...to cover up, and mislead for political and monetary reasons) And what purpose would it serve to act in defiance of the black out?  Why rebel, when people are seeking a way to be in solidarity about our changing planet?  At least the greater population of the world is intelligent enough to care about our future, and our children's future, and is willing to take WHATEVER STEPS NECESSARY for sustainable life on Earth.
I agree with White Dancing Guy, global warming doesn't exsist it is just the earth's tectonic plates moving like they always have the earth is going to change people it is only a matter of time. But I do think that turning off the lights is cool just to see what a dark city would look like!!
Does it really make a difference if the power is still being generated?  I mean electricity loses its current after so many transmission lines.  How much more energy would be required to jump start all these monuments and cities once they have to power back up.  Point and case, in California there is a draw down on the entire grid when people turn on their air conditioners all at once.  Help me out.  I don't understand how this will really help all of us.
i'm glad to see some cities trying to raise awareness.  as christians, we are required to take care of the earth God gave us.  buy a prius!  they're great cars, fun to drive, quiet and really spacious for a smaller car!

white guy dancing is a moron.  typical right-wing blabbermouth.  does anyone seriously think terrorism is made up? lol
Great Idea!
Seems to me this is simply a display.  Any effect isn't long lasting.  However, it is an important step in making people more conscious of their energy usage (which will have a long-lasting effect).  I applaud the cities and the WWF for this.  I agree with Trinna... why AREN'T people turning off lights they aren't using.  No lights are on in my house right now, the sun is out!  Open your windows, people!
Hey, Courtney Baird--I'm in Columbus and I will be turning off the lights at 8pm.It all starts with one person. I've notified as many of my neighbors as I can. We'll see what happens. Good Luck!
I agree with d in illinois.  If all these lights that they have turned off are non-essential why are we using them in the first place.  As someone who grew up out in the country and has moved the suburbs I applaud the removal of all the non-essentail streetlights.  I miss seeing the night sky and I think the children of today would be well surved to bring it back as would the economy, and the energy crisis.  Turning off unnecessary lights will bring the stars back to us at night.
Here in Athens Greece we had many non voluntary EARTH HOURS, compliments of the boys in DEH (Power company striking employees)so kudos them. WWF make them the shining ambassadors of your effort !!!
i'm still trying to figure out how global warming will cause an ice age....
If it came down to people like "White Guy Dancing" up there, we wouldn't have any conservation, any problems with the environment possibly not being here for the "children of tomorrow".  Sure White Guy, go ahead and turn on all of your lights, throw away all your garbage, instead of trying to recycle some of that is already in the over-flowing garbage dumps.  Nah, one person won't make a difference when you get idiots like White Guy up there, but if you get a group of people that DO CARE ABOUT THIS WORLD, then we can make a difference in his tomorrow, whether he cares about it or not.  I believe that the only person up there that MIGHT BE the, as he phrased it, "enviro-retards", would be White-Guy Dancing.  But obviously, he doesn't have anybody carrying on his name for tomorrow, otherwise he might give a little interest in trying to save this already dying planet.  Beth
Forget global warming, for a moment, whether you believe it's man's fault or not.  There is an energy crisis going on world wide.  Take a moment to consider that energy wasted isn't easily re-captured.  Living here in China, it's easy to feel how the scarcity impacts us...not something we felt in the US at all.
Be considerate "white guy dancing"...you aren't the only one out there - and whether your an enviro-freak or not, what you do impact the lives of others, no matter how small the gesture.
Chicago was one of the participants?  This is the first I have learned about the project.  There was no publicity that I saw about Chicago participating.  IN that sense the demonstration was a flop.
My grandsons and I participated on our own. While we were probably the only ones in town it was nice to shut off the computer and TV and actually play together. They are 3 and 6 and I believe that you're never too young to learn to conserve. We are a throw-away society and are paying for it with our air, land and water.
i live in a town of 450 people, nothing formal was planned but the wife and i decided to do it anyways. we enjoyed 3 games of cards and spent the last 15 minutes just talking, been a long time since that happened.  who knows maybe next year we will plan something a little spicier to do in the dark lol
The folks out there who think this event is stupid are NUTS.  I don't give two cents what you think about global warming; global warming and cooling isn't the issue here.  ENERGY is the issue here.    Driving an car these days?  Seen gas prices lately?  Use your AC, heater, lights, fridge, TV, computer, washer/dryer much?  You want to keep doing that for a few more hundred years with a reasonable amount of comfort? Exactly HOW do you think we're going to solve problems for folks in the future if we don't look at them NOW?

I'd love to see more events like this - you may not save a huge amount of energy in the grand scheme of things, but it gets people THINKING, which is the first step towards any kind of change.  Those of you who laugh at these guys?  Yeah, you can...you'll likely be dead by the time the wells run dry, we have too many people and not enough energy and food to go around, and those doomsday movies from the 70's actually look pretty TAME.  Wake the hell up and realize that we're either going to make some minor changes to what we do to affect positive long-term change, or just continue to consume everything in sight and screw your kid's kid's kids down the road.  Those of you who don't think THAT'S coming are either clinically retarded or willfully burying your heads in the sand.
Splended idea.  I would love to see the results.a
Only a moron would leave the lights on in a room they were not using.  Didn't your parents tell you to turn off the lights.  So you grew up and became dumber. Your pathetic if you need a special day, once a year to smarten up.
These people are idiots---They don't get a bill every month---How much more aware do I have to be---Give me a break---We will spend more money now on police patrols to ward off the extra crime that happens when there is no light----I believe in global climate changes---as a natural cycle---There was an abnormally large number of ice-burgs when the Titanic sank and what about the "dust bowl" of the 30's--These scientists are grasping for fame in global-warming because it can't be proved either way and they aren't smart enough to find something helpful---Of course we should be good stewards of the earth---but taxing us to death is not the answer and that's what this all about--Keith Bailey
Actually, since this effort only produced a paltry 10% reduction in power consumption, I think it should be mandatory, except for hospitals. A blackout would be helpful AND fun! Maybe some thought should be given to an eletromagnetic pulse!  That would shake those enviro doubters up!!
Good God - how easy it is to lead people down the path of lunacy.  Count me in with "White Guy Dancing" I'm gonna turn on every light (incadescent ones too) I can find.  Who will enviornmentalists thank if/when someone "breaks" these new stupid bulbs that contain so much Mercury u have 2 have a "Haz-Mat Team" de-contaminate ur home?  Call for help from Al Gore? Ha! U will have unexceptionally high levels of Mercury which is the #2 deadliest toxin known.
I like many other Americans have been given a wake up call and we care about how we will leave this planet when we are no longer here. We may be doing too little too late but at least we are doing. Believe what you want but I for one believe and will encourage everyone I can to really think about the choices we have made and the real crimes we have committed against this planet. You don't have to agree but you certainly can't be blind.
To those people who refuse to believe in global warming... with over "6 BILLION PEOPLE" on this planet (and all the trash, roads, buildings, mining, waste and pollution that goes along with those people) it may be time to open your eyes.  I believe the earth is alive in so many ways... and one of these days she will seek her revenge.  Maybe this is her first step.
There not talking about turning a light off in a room
no-one is using.
There talking about turning all the lights off and
sitting in the dark.
Pure stupid
