‘We’ll always have questions’

WASHINGTON – We'll probably never know what really happened to Air Force Maj. Perry Jefferson and Army 1st Lt. Arthur Ecklund

On April 3, 1969, Jefferson, 37, of Denver, Colo., and Ecklund, 24, of Galesburg, Ill., took off in a single-engine O-1G Bird Dog aircraft for a reconnaissance flight over the mountains of South Vietnam. They were never seen again.

An extensive air search turned up no evidence of a crash and no sign of the men, except for a faint emergency beeper signal for several seconds. Jefferson and Ecklund were listed as missing in action despite reports of two men fitting their descriptions being held captive by the Communist Vietcong.

For 15 years, their disappearance remained a mystery. Then, in 1984, a former member of the South Vietnamese Air Force turned over to a U.S. official in the Philippines a human jaw bone he said belonged to one of two pilots whose aircraft was shot down. The jaw bone turned out to be Ecklund's.

And in 2001, a Vietnamese national living in California handed over to U.S. officials human remains he said were recovered at a site where two American pilots crashed. Those were Jefferson's.

What the two Vietnamese were doing with the remains in the first place was never explained.

Larry Greer, a spokesman for the Pentagon's POW/MIA office, said he didn't know why the two Vietnamese had the remains, but he said no action was taken against them.

"If we did so," Greer said, "that would be the last time we'd have access to anyone's remains. It's not punishment we're after; it's information we're after which leads us to the identification of missing Americans."

After DNA tests proved last year the remains were indeed Jefferson’s, the Pentagon returned his remains to his family for burial.

All of this was enough to convince Jefferson's younger brother that he was killed in a crash, not as a prisoner.

"The best part of the whole thing was to know he actually died in the crash," Michael Jefferson told The Denver News Channel.

Ecklund's elderly parents weren't so sure.

"To some extent, we'll always have questions," Ralph Ecklund, 87, told the Peoria Journal-Star in 2004. "But we've worried and stewed for some time, and if this is all they're going to find, then at least we'll have some closure."

That closure was completed last week with the burial of Jefferson's and Ecklund's remains at Arlington National Cemetery.

May they finally rest in peace.

i'm glad the kin have some closure. It has to be hell not knowing and having all the different possible scenarios constantly running thru ones mind. After 2 years in nam and then comming home in one piece, at least physically, I think of the possibility of anyone still alive, and in capitivity, the sheer nitemare it would be, and I ask Jesus that he have them ALL home with HIM

WHAT A SHAME THESE PEOPLE WITH AMERICAN HUMAN REMAINS WILL NOT BE PUNISHED,SHOULD BE DEPORTED. HOW DID THEY COME BY THEM.  WHY WEREN'T THEY DISCOVERED WHEN THEY GOT HERE?  HOW MANY AMERICANS DID THEY KILL. I WONDER AT TIMES HOW MANY BAD GUYS WE LET IN HERE. AFTER 30+ YRS MIA ARE PROB. My questions would be are the bones these two had souvenirs from the war or did they personally have something to do with the death of these two men? Do they have information about other remains we are seeking? I grieve with the families and demand our government investigate the matter further.
War makes criminals of us all and should be a last resort instead of an option. It is a great crime against humanity along with genocide and other situation where a power over life and death is sought after, ie, abortion, and other invasion over where living human beings are fodder for power seeking men and women.
Slow Hand Salute for these 2 Gentlemen and fellow Viet Vets.
MAY THE BOTH OF YOU REST IN PEACE.  THANKS FOR WHAT YOU DID FOR OUR COUNTRY. W WEATHERS - XJARHEAD
They were givin us rights and live here now.. case closed on why we got the bones...
I am glad they found the remains of these 2 soldiers It is great they are being buried at Arlington Cemetery!
The Nation provides a resting place for its fallen heros. Fitting closure for two more of her sons and our brothers in arms; long gone but never forgotten.
A moment of peace to mark their return home.

Service veterans and honoring them any way we can is what it's all about.  How it all came about may never be known, but the family has some closure now.
Have peace in your hearts for these men can be truely at rest now and as there is to much anger in the world today.

Welcome home Maj. Jefferson and 1st Lt. Ecklund.  May They Rest In Peace. Their friends, families and loved ones will all be in my thoughts and prayers.

God Bless America, God Save The Republic.
At least for these two families they have closure.  The endless torment of not knowing if they were alive or dead is a form of living death for those family members. God bless you.  While we don't know how these remains just now came to light, obviously those people felt led to disclose them at long last.
Thank God these men are finally home and resting in a
place and a nation that will always remember and honor them.
Mag. jefferson and 1st Lt.ecklund. WELCOME HOME MAY GOD CONTINUE TO HOLD YOU IN THE PALMS OF HIS HANDS,AND GIVE YOUR FAMILY PEACE
Welcome home, Major Jefferson and Lt Ecklund.
Perhaps, it was good that you waited, you will receive the honor, you deserve now, at that time, probably not.
Too bad, we can't get Jane Fonda and one of those who went to Canada, to go with you and carry your bags through the gates.
Welcome home Boys! I know you know how proud of you we are. Your service to this country WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!Your courage inspires me, your scrifice humbles me. May God grant you peace my brothers.

Finally two more warriors return home.....long overdue.  May you rest in peace and your families finally have closure.  For those of us who have never served our country I thank you for the ultimate sacrifice.
Should we sent a nationwide alert....if you are holding our soldiers bones please come forward; since
you now have all the benefits and plesures our soldiers died for!
I.m glad they finally came home. Ithink they deserve the title of heros. God bless their families at this time. God Bless all the Soldiers and God Bless America
A tear for each family, a hug for each parent/sibling/wife/or child, and a THANK YOU. Thank you to two very brave indiviuals. May you rest in peace. YOU WERE HEROS THEN AND ARE HEROS NOW!!!!!
Major jefferson and Lt Ecklund are but 2 of many casualty of our wars on foreign... who have finally been laid to rest.
One of these days review the number of US and Allied POWs held by the Germans at Luftstalags KNOWN to have been 'liberated' by the Russian Army... and the relative number of US and Allied POWs who returned to the US after being 'liberated' by the Russian Army.
Similarly review the number of US and Allied POWs returned to us subsequent to the Korean War.
In both cases the number returned deviates widely from the number  > KNOWN < to have been held.

May the good Lord grant these two exceptional heroes everlasting peace and happiness.

This veteran is profoundly grateful for their service to our beloved nation. Thank you for giving the ultimate sacrifice so that others may enjoy freedom's blessings.

Welcome home, brothers...may you both rest in peace.
Rest in Peace, soldiers brave, God is nigh.
Jane did find and carry bones in a bag in that horror movie.  Canada?...had nothing to do with that war.
What would happen to a US Citizen found with or "handing in" human remains kept in their possession? How long had this person been living in the USA with these remains before "handing them in"? If there is any logic here, it appears the logic is if you "find" human remains you can hold on to them for as long as you like. When you do "hand them in" there should be no recourse because if you or any of your relatives or countrymen find anymore we dont want you to be discouraged from waiting perhaps 32 years to "hand those over". These young men were US Citizens and US Soldiers and their remains were in possession of non US Citizens (living in the US) who do not even have to explain how or why they had them all this time?  I sincerely feel for these families and can not begin to understand what they must be feeling.  I do have a son however, and if someone ever kept any part of my sons remains for any period of time before "handing them in" WHOA -I would want a whole lot more than "it's not punishment we are after".
I AM SO PLEASED THAT THE NUT CASES DID NOT VENT THEIR SPLEEN AT THESE TWO, OF MANY HONORED DEAD. IT RESTORES ONES FAITH IN THE CITIZENRY
I AM SO PLEASED THAT THE NUT CASES DID NOT VENT THEIR SPLEEN AT THESE TWO, OF MANY HONORED DEAD. IT RESTORES ONES FAITH IN THE CITIZENRY
I am so glad those two families have found closure.
God bless you all.
May God Bless the families of these two Gallant Warriors; and may the Almighty Master of the Universe welcome them to their just Reward. And, while we're about it, may He also Bless all Veterans of the Viet Nam war. They did their duty to the best of their ability, and were treated worse than stray animals when they got home. You deserved much, much better.
I have been going back to vietnam 2 to 3 times a year for the last 12 years, always keeping my ear to the ground for any info on  MIA's POW's. In the course of my travels I have made wonderful friendships with an assortment of Vietnamese, including some of my former adversaries. One of the first bits of information i received was from a draftee in the Vietnam Army. I was told that anyone finding any remains or clues that lead to  defined remains of American POW's. that person and his family will be eligible for immediate immigration to the USA as well as monetary awards upon the DNA proving  the remains being of a MIA person.  The guys that had these remains if indeed they had them in the usa were  strange people, and I really wonder if they were indeed, former members of the South Vietnamese Armed Forces.
Mr. J Hughes and others..I agree but also rememebr that there wre over 15,000 Canadians served in USA uniforms in veitnam and another 40,000 served in other parts of the world in American uniforms.  About 116 died in veitnam and are Honoured at the Wall in Washington. I was one of them. So when u talk about the ones going to Canada, please rmemeber many more from Canada came south!
Vietnam veteran,USMC combat infantry. At least we know that what happened to them. In a way it was a good thing that they had some bones. I remember some Marines putting VC bones in their packs to bring back to the USA.
Some of the Marines had complete skulls in their packs. Some veterans brought back and/or shipped stuff home. Of course back them there wasn't even any search of seabags when veterans came home.
If you are a veteran, or you know a veteran that brought back a skull of an VC, will you send it back to Vietnam? How do think that the familes of some NVA or VC feel not knowing where their loved one was killed. Hell, sometimes we would throw all the bodies in a bomb crater and cover them with dirt.
We as Americans have to realize and understand that the enemy is also human!
To My Brothers in Arms.  Welcome home and Thank You for your Service.  We are Honored to have had your service to our great Country.
As the song goes Some Gave all.  To all the Vietnam veterans alive and dead, thank you and god bless you.
As an american I am so very proud of each one of you.
Now if we could put a gun in all these illegal's in this country and send them over the Iraq and bring our men and women home.  Make them serve 2-3 yrs if they survive we give them citizenship if they don't well they should not have been here to begin with.
to tom collins

go back to canada and burn your draft card. men like these are to be honored, and not used for your political agenda. they answered the call for our country, so that cowards like you could remain safe and run down their sacrifice like you do. their service made you free to spout the kind of drivel you write here. shame on you.
honor our dead, and hold up our living veterans to the high honor they deserve.
Rest in peace my BROTHERS you are home now and will never be forgotten.  I would not let Hanoi Jane carry my spit to a trash can. Again welcome home my BROTHERS, from a fellow vet
I offer my condolences to these men's loved ones. May the peace of knowing they are now home. This gives those of us who left comrades behind in the jungles of Vietnam hope of locating them and bringing them home.
To my fallen brothers and American heros,,,welcome home.

These gallant men served their country when called. They gave the ultimate. God welcomes them to his bosum as we lay these heros in our most "Hallowed Ground ". As a grateful American I thank them and their families and can assure them that the vast majority of fellow Americans appreciate their service. May God's Grace be with them.
