Mothers tell their side of polygamy story

Posted: Tuesday, April 15, 2008 11:24 AM

SAN ANGELO, Texas – For nearly two weeks, journalists covering the removal of children from the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints compound, known as the YFZ Ranch, have had access to just one side of the story.

During the initial raid, the men who live on the ranch weren’t allowed to leave, and the women who had been removed with their children were sequestered away in shelters.

That gave state officials the advantage of presenting their allegations of physical and sexual abuse of children on the ranch to the public with little chance for rebuttal except through church lawyers.

Well, the situation changed dramatically last night, when Texas Child Protective Services and police officers separated dozens of mothers from their children, keeping custody of the children and sending the women back to the ranch. (Some may have chosen to go to a battered women’s shelter, according to a CPS official.)

Immediately after the women went home, I received a call on my cell phone from a spokesman for the family.

"They’re all back at the ranch," he told me.  "They want to talk."

"When?" I asked.

"As soon as you can get here," he said.

So I dropped everything, and rushed to the ranch, along with more than a dozen other reporters who had received a similar call.

Speaking out
After a short wait at the main gate (where construction is almost complete on an ominous looking guard tower), we were all allowed in to the ranch living area. Homes and log-sided dormitories sat on a gentle knoll, separated by a wide, well maintained road.

Two dozen or more women wearing prairie-style dresses were waiting for us outside of one of the buildings.

I’m posting some of their interviews here because I want you to hear from these women for yourselves.

VIDEO: 'They totally lied' - mothers in ranch raid speak out

They all had similar stories (so similar that some reporters suggested they were pre-rehearsed).

In short, the women are heartbroken at having had their children taken away. They’re angry at the government for doing so, and for allegedly tricking them into returning to the ranch Monday without their children.

They said the living conditions in the shelter were cramped and dirty, but they also said many of the volunteers and even state workers who cared for them were warm, loving people. They worry they’ll never see their children again, and depending on the outcome of custody hearings on Thursday, they may be right.

They all denied their children were sexually or physically abused. They said all women are free to leave the ranch anytime they wish.  And, they suspect the phone call from a 16-year-old mother alleging abuse was a hoax from outside the compound.

One of the women, Marie, wanted to make sure to have the opportunity to say she forgives the people who have torn her family apart.

I can't say about the original complainer, but since there were a number of young girls, around 13 or 14 years old, who were pregnant or had children already, it is beyond doubt that at least some girls were pressured into underage sex. Different countries have different standards for when a child becomes a woman and can legally marry, but in Texas marriage is illegal before the age of 16, which means that even "consensual" sex before 16 is illegal.
Everyone should keep in mind that having sex with an underaged individual in Texas is a felony! The law is there for a reason - protecting the underaged until they are of age to understand completely the related consequences. That transcends any practices or beliefs that hurt others. I feel sorry for the mothers - but they put their children in postion to be violated. I am not sure re-uniting these children with their mom is in the best interest of the children.  It is about the kids now - not the moms. On a case by case basis, this needs to be examined. Every resource possible needs to be put against these - agencies need to transcend boundaries and take care of these young people.

I do not agree with the religious beliefs of this sect at all.  But it appears to me that the government, with very little in the way of proof, have detained individuals and divided families. Not that we practice much in our constitution anyways, after all, we are at war without delcaration, running secret prisons and holding captured soldiers against international agreements, but the right to ones house and property are guarantees that are the hallmark of the foundation of our country.  I am worried that the government has intervened only because pulic opinion would be with them because of the disdain for the peoples beliefs, not because of any real crime that has occurred.  The object of this investigation, the girl, has yet to be found, and the gentleman accused of the acts has been on parloe in another state, thus watched and not able to committ this crime.  This looks much more like religious persecution than it does a criminal investigation.  I am worried that we have usurped the constitution and everything it stands for!
The Pope and Catholic priests must be arrested for accomplice to the rape, of the minor children sexually abused by priests. Catholic children should be taken into custody by the state and sent to foster homes. If Mormons are to be treated this way by the state, then Catholics should be treated the same way to avoid allegations of religious discrimination. Maybe Baptists have decided the Mormons are weaker, and have decided to attack the Mormons for the time being, they will attack Catholic families later. The Baptists have "Baptist Child Family Division Incident Commanders" yes the Baptists are using military designations for their staff who wage war on families of other religions.
They are free to leave but they are so brainwashed that they cannot leave. And their children suffer the same fate.
Once more the government doing a knee jerk reaction and holding the children as hostages. They just needed an excuse to raid them. Being as large as they were becoming they were a sizable voting block. If they were forcing the girls to marry older men and can be (key word)PROVEN that at THIS LOCATION these things were indeed taking place then it's understandable. However I have a sneaking suspicion that won't be the case and what we have here is the classic case of the governmnet using bait and switch legal tactics as has become they're modus of operandi.
I may be wrong .....but something just don't add up. The judge seemed like a government agent rather than an impartial justice. IMHO
Sorry, but I have no sympathy for women who know what is going to happen to their children and they allow something that horrible to be done. They wouldn't answer the reporter's questions about it either. How could they allow that to happen and believe it is anyone's will. You cannot be brainwashed into believing that it is good for a young girl to be forced into having sexual relations with an old man or any man. They need help. Parents are supposed to protect their children, not prostitute them.
Either way - polygamy is against the law...
THESE WOMEN ARE ALL BRAIN-WASHED.  I FEEL SURE THEY WERE RAISED IN THE SECT, SO THEY KNOW NOTHING DIFFERENT.  KEEP THE KIDS SAFE!  THEY ARE NOT GIVEN A CHOICE OF LIFESTYLE IF THEY AREN'T EXPOSED TO THE FREE WORLD.  I FEEL TERRIBLY SORRY FOR THESE WOMEN AND THE HORRIBLE ABUSIVE LIVES THEY FEEL COMPELLED TO DEFEND.  MOST SOUND BEYOND HELP
uh huh. please. i've heard stories of polygamists raping 14 year old girls so hard they can't walk for two weeks. It is fact they used to kill handicapped or mentally challenged babies at birth. it is now the 21st century people. it's not 1847 anymore. get with the program.
Yes, I guess I have a question?  Why is it that the men in the Polygamy issues are targeted but, the women who aid and abet the men are never charged?  If there is abuse why are the mothers not charged with failure to protect their children? We surly have plenty of hot shot lawyers in prosecution areas that can dream up some inovative charges why don't they and get this whole thing over with.  The story I read said there was an "ominouse" looking tower being built at the gate of the compound. Is that a threat to local law enforcement or others?  Is inovation only for the add folks?
No matter what!!!! children should never be taken from their mother...I find this act deplorable!
Take the men away! Leave the mothers with their children.
They denied their children were sexually or physically abused. They said all women are free to leave the ranch anytime they wish.

I don't believe that for a minute. Any 13-year-old girl who is "spiritually married" to an adult man is being abused. Period.
The last time I looked, Polygamy was againhst the law in Texas and all of the other state.  Doesn't the fact that these people were practicing an unlawful act constitute a crime?  Whether or not their children were hurt in any way, it still does not excuse the fact that they were practicing polygamy.  This is very much the same as the illegal alien argument.  You break the law, and there are reprocussions.  If I were to break the law, I would accept the consequences.  If the Polygamists want to practice their "religion", they should stay within the laws of the U.S.
The above information is fine but the questions that nobody is touching on are: Where are the men? There are no pictures, no comments, nothing. There are 400+ kids involved here, many of these woman have a rather large number of children, where are the fathers and are there multiple fathers? One more question that is missing. Where does the money to run this huge compound come from? Why has no one reported on these subjects?
wow, creepy.
No matter what their beliefs are as far as polygamy is concerned, SEX WITH MINORS IS A CRIME!!!! Cloaking pedophilia in a thin disguise as "religious beliefs" is still JUST PEDOPHILIA and these men should be in prison!
No young girl can make an informed decision about marriage at the age of 16-or less. Or even 18 for that matter. (As a woman who married legally at 18 many many years ago I have some right to state this)
There is no way any of these arranged "spiritual marriages" to these your girls are moral-let alone legal, considering that the children and extra wives are collecting welfare and food stamps. Stockholm syndrome and brainwashed would be better descriptions. Or pedophelia.
The govt. doesn't LIE!  This is a fabrication by these women.  Also, I want to come out like Stephen Colbert and say that I am against polygamy, even if it hurts my credibility.  Why should anyone who believes in god be credible?  Half the world is retarded for believing in religion. If they really were practicing this stuff at this ranch they should be prosecuted, in all seriousness.
"The women said they were lied to, it was dirty where they slept, the people were nice." You call that telling their side of the story?  This "article" is hardly informative.  I hope you plan to elaborate soon.
I don't feel sorry for women who allow their daughters to be married off under age and their sons to be put to work before they've finished school or kicked out of the communities altogether.  The men controlling these communities are just using the women to manipulate the media.  Everyone knows what's going on in these compounds, it should not have taken this long to intercede on behalf of these children.  Shame on the authorities in Utah and Arizona for doing nothing when children are at risk and kudos to Texas for stepping up and doing the right thing!
At least they weren't complaining about being persecuted for their beliefs. Polygamy is illegal in this country. Period. The girls were being 'married' below the age of consent. Forced sexual intercourse is also known as rape. They were right to take the children, just as they do in similar situations across the country. Women should not be raised to be subservient to men. Period.
This is government out of control. It has no more of a business separating these children from their parents because it doesn't like their lifestyle choices than it has of allowing gay couples to have or keep children because it approves of theirs. Just because the government has a hammer doesn't give it a right to go hammering in every nail it sees.
We need to remember that women such as these, who are born into and live their lives with this sect, do not have the same definition of "abused" that others do.  If you live your life watching children being spanked repeatedly or what we (non sect individuals) would view as tortured to "learn to behave" then you don't view it as abuse...its just normal behavior.  That is what is truly sad about this story.  These women see the way they and their children are treated as "normal".
I just finished reading ESCAPE,by a former FLDS member Carolyn Jessop, and I am more haunted and affected by it than anything I've ever read before. I urge everyone to please read it, before you make a judgement. These women and children have been tyrannized for generations, right under our noses.

I would do anything at all to be able to offer our help and assistance on our dairy farm in Mryland, but a message on the website for Texas child services says there is nothing that can be done at the present time, especially out of state.

Again, please read it. And then pass it on. You won't be able to do nothing after you do.
Whilst I'm sure conditions are far from ideal, somehow the woman in the lilac dress just doesn't sound believable.  Talking about her son not wanting to leave her, she sounds like she's crying but does not look like it.  Not a tear no red eyes, ruuny nose? Not sure I could actually function if I believed someone had just taken my son away and I may never see him again.  I certainly wouldn't appear quite so well pressed.
These women know "what to say" from years of rehearsing all sorts of "last days" scenarios. Don't be fooled. Despite the constant brainwashing and subtle hints at retaliation (spiritual and physical), they know deep down that what they are doing is not just unusual, different, and manipulative but that it is wrong.  It's wrong to raise your children with no choice, no freedom, complete ignorance and prejudice for anyone not in the sect. It's hurtful and they cling to the idea that if they keep themselves and their children within the fold they will never have to experience the pain and humiliation you feel when know you were dupped. At best it's a massive, hurtful con, at worst it's a life-threatening cult. Those of us who have broken away spend the rest of our lives in pain - for ourselves and those who are not yet free.
If there is no sign of the children being abused, I don't understand why they are taking them away?  I personally think the call that started all of this was faked by the Jessup lady.
I'm having a hard time trusting that they are allowed to leave at any time. I do believe that it was terrible to take their kids away seeing as not every family is going to have an abusive man at the head. Not every child was in danger. Just as fathers are different in monogomous relationships, they are different in polygamous.
The "heartache" of these women is trumped by the state's concern for the well being of the children.  Regardless of what called the state to the compound, once there, the state had a basis to find the health and safety of each of the children was at risk and they were required by law to remove the children from harm's way. If the mothers and fathers of the children are raising their children in a environment that condones, promotes and allows rape and pedophilia, the state is morally and legally justifed in placing the children in a healthy environment.

It is very nice to for once be haring at least a little from the other side. This coverage has been very one sided and as we found out from Iraq we can nto always trust that we are being given the full and accurate story from the Governemt. So far my understanding is that they have still not been able to locate the girl that made the call and that the man accused has not even been in Texas for over 17 years. I feel for these people that have had thier lives torn apart. I pray that they will not all lose thier children.
I know these women must be very hurt to be taken away from their children but as far as I am concerned if they children were abused (and so far it seems that they definitely were) then the women are just as guilty as the men who abused these young girls and children.  They will answer to God when they die but for now answering to a judge and the legal system will have to do.
the federal or local governments never prosecute muslim polygamists, even if they are illegals.
wow. i am sure they discussed with their husbands first before talking. so i wouldnt be surprised if they were rehearsed. i just hope the children are untraumtized as they can be but it looks like such a mess and confusion, no one will go unscathed.
There may or may not be sexual crimes involving underaged wives in this compound, time will tell.

What is certain is that the actions of the State of Texas are a crime against humanity in removing these young children from the care of their mothers who have committed absolutely no offense.  Having two wives is NOT illegal if the situation is common-law and not bigamous.

The actions of the Texas government wil without a doubt scar these children for life.

And I've no doubt that if  these governmental hoods would perpetrate such an immoral offense against these helpless children in isolating them in this way, it is ABSOLUTELY possible that random associated operatives of the state will try to brain-wash into lying about their parents to support their precious case that they think will get them fifteen minutes of fame or whatever.

I've never felt so strongly about a governmental intrusion as I do about this one.  Children are not pawns, they have attachments that can be broken with life-long ramifications.  Too bad this country more or less owns the World Court, it'd be nice to see this terrifying governmental intrusion held up and shamed before the whole world.

How would you like it if it was your five-year old, if you'd done nothing wrong and some storm-trooper-bureaucrat snatched your child like this?

Wonder how many of these kids will end up molested, perhaps by paid care-givers while in the "care" of the state? And has this bunch got too much on the line now to admit to an offense even if (when) it happens/
These poor children.  I feel so sorry for them.  Not only have they lived a very brain-washed life - but now the society they have been trained to fear has them, that must be a very scary thing for them.  While I know it is for their best interest, it still is sad they have to go through this.  Please don't get me wrong - I don't believe those mothers deserve to get their children back.  Anyone who would allow their flesh and blood to be treated in such a way should also be severly punished for abuse.  To give away your child daughter for the pleasures of a grown man is SICK!  This is NOT about religious persecution at all, this is about these poor children who are being ravaged and abused all for a bunch of men's pleasure.  Not to mention the "training" they give to the babies at a young age - it is tantamount to waterboarding....we gasp when we hear about the government doing that to terrorists - I hope those children are never allowed to go back into that environment - EVER!!!!  Those children have years and years of deprogramming and very traumatic experiences to heal from let alone - re-learning what true society is and what personal boundaries are.  It is a shame this raid couldn't have happened much sooner!
I cannot stop reading these articles, I just can't believe that in this day and age this stuff goes on. Maybe waterboarding is what Warren Jeffs needs aside from castration.
It's obvious these women have been brain-washed.  Polygamy is ILLEGAL!  I don't care what their religion is, it's against the law.  As for the child abuse, I wouldn't believe anything they say.  They have been taught that this kind of up-bringing is perfectly normal, under their society.  They were probably molested as children and know no other way.  The men are child molester's and need to be put in prison...for a very long time.  The media needs to wake up and quit letting them pump smoke up you butt!
Don't you dare be different in Amerika. These girls should have been wathching MTV, sleeping around with boys thier own ages and getting high on crack, not on superstitions.
How dare them!
I would imagine much of what they said was indeed rehearsed. From what I have been able to read on this, I think that their children should definitely be removed from their custody, at least until there can be some psychological evaluations done on these children to see what exactly has been going on in that "religious" environment
Everyone in a society must have the same rights, or everyone is in danger of losing their rights. Would the people of New York tolerate this action by the state in New Square, Borough Park, or some other Chassidic community?  Would the people of Pennsylvania tolerate the state doing this an Amish community?  Remember Martin Niemuller:  When they came for the Jews...
When will we realize that the Child Protective Services has more power than the gestapo had during WWII? An anonymous caller can have your child taken away in a heartbeat. All the caller has to claim is "child abuse". There is no prior investigation as the CPS will immediately storm your home and take your children. I have personally witnessed this happen to distraught friends who were visiting our country. It was incredible and I still find it difficult to believe this can happen here...but it does and something needs to be done about their methods.
How naive can you be?  To believe these women would tell the truth about the abuses taking place.  They returned to where they have been indoctrinated in the fallacies of love and sex and that the man is always right and the woman is always wrong.  These woman will only say what they have been told they can say by the men who control them.  Forcing a child of 12 to 16 to have sex and bear children it sick, immoral, and degenerate!  There have been so many of these types of cases and so much documentation of the abuses that happen in these concentration camps, yet you news people still want to believe that there is nothing wrong!  Take your heads out of the dirt and take a look around! Or maybe the problem is that you secretly wish you were a part of it?
This is one of the most heinous and disturbing actions by the government in recent time. Absolutely unnecessary. Breaking up families and separating innocent children from their innocent mothers !! Where is the outcry ?? Where are the marches in the streets ?? This is not America.. this is NAZI GERMANY !! Shame on all of you for sitting back. Because they will BE COMING FOR YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN NEXT !!!!
While no one is happy to see children separated from their mothers, before we go too far down the sympathy route I suggest all reporters read Jon Krakauer's "Under the Banner of Heaven" to get an idea of what goes on in the fundamentalist Mormon communities.

Brainwashing, teaching girls from a very young age that marrying an old man is what God wants for them, beating them severely if they try to leave... these faiths are abusive children and toward women.  Read Krakauer's book, and think if you would want a young daughter of yours brought up that way.

The raid is a bit late; this abuse has been going on for decades. Only very strong women are able to break free.

I do feel sorry for the mothers and children; but at least now the children have a chance to break free of this abuse.

Personally, I don't care if adults - ADULTS - who are aware of the options, who have been exposed to all that society has to offer - decide to set up households with many men, many women, mix and match, whatever. But these children don't have a chance to decide for themselves. They get married before the age of consent; and even if they did wait until they're 18, because they are so brainwashed as they grow up, they are not making a free choice.

Bet the policy of this sect is to deny allegations
in the event a raid were to take place. Bet anyone
who speaks out will be cast out. Hope the raid
produced incriminating evidence.  I cant imagine what
it must be like for such a young girl dreading her day of union to an older abusive man...dreading knowing of the room that awaits her once the union is (un) sanctified. Hope justice prevails here for those girls and they seize the place.
Well, at least the Gestapo did not send in the tanks and flame throwers this time.
"During the initial raid, the men who live on the ranch weren’t allowed to leave, and the women who had been removed with their children were sequestered away in shelters."

Please clarify: Who didn't allow the men to leave and who forced the women to be sequestered away in shelters?
"I’m posting some of their interviews..." So where are these interviews?  I want to read them.

Lance  ==)---------------
If they don't find any facts or proof that abuse has taken place the children should go back.
