‘Super Bowl ring minted for a true giant’

WASHINGTON - The Super Bowl football heroes brought their own special hero with them to the White House for their meeting with President Bush.

Army Lt. Col. Greg Gadson, who lost both legs in Iraq and later gave the New York Giants a pep talk that helped propel them to the Super Bowl, stood among the Giants players on his prosthetic legs and listened yesterday as President Bush singled him out for praise.

"I'm proud to be on the stage with this man," said the president. "He has got the Purple Heart and three Bronze Stars, and now he's got a Super Bowl ring minted for a true giant."

President Bush shakes hands with Lt. Col. Greg Gadson, the New York Giants inspirational co-captain, on the White House South Lawn on April 30 as quarterback Eli Manning looks on.

After his remarks, the president stopped and bantered for a moment with Gadson.

"He really just thanked me," Gadson told me today. "It was a genuine thanks, and he told me I was a good man and he was proud of me."

From one battleground to another
Gadson's journey from the battleground in Iraq to the South Lawn of the White House began on May 7 of last year when a roadside bomb tore apart his legs on a street in Baghdad. I first met him on Sept. 12 while he was recuperating at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

"I've been here a little over four months," he told me at the time, "and I've been on my feet for a little bit, and I'm making steady progress, so that's all I can ask for."

Ten days later, Gadson was asked by Mike Sullivan, a former football teammate at West Point and an assistant coach for the Giants, to speak to the 0-2 team before its game against the Washington Redskins.

"I just talked to them about life," said the former Army defensive end and linebacker. "I talked to them about their obligation as professionals to do their best."

The Giants went out the next day and upset the Redskins, 24-17. New York turned its season around and reeled off six straight victories and a record 10 straight road wins.

"If he wasn't with us at games, he'd call us and talk to the team beforehand," Giants quarterback Eli Manning said after yesterday's White House ceremony. "He's become a good friend to all the Giants."

‘An unbelievable inspiration’
Gadson gave the Giants another pep talk before their stunning 17-14 upset of the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl.

"I told them you have to play together as a team and believe in each other," he said.

I asked Manning what Gadson has meant to the Giants.

"Greg has just been an unbelievable inspiration to this team," said Manning. "He has a wonderful outlook on life. And still, everything he's been through, his spirits are high. He loves to laugh and smile and he's just a joy to be around."

I asked the 42-year-old Gadson what the Giants and their Super Bowl run meant for him.

"They've been part of my healing process, just being able to interact with them," Gadson said. "I mean, I'll tell you, the difference between me talking to them in September and in February was that I was still struggling to get on my feet, fighting through and working through and just trying to get myself better."

One soldier, one football team, two class acts.

Great story.
Truly an inspirational story!
Gadson certainly sounds like a real hero and a "Super Giant."  He and the Giants are perfect for each other because the team and their quarterback Eli Manning are together a class act.  Great inspirational story!
of all the crappy things I read about this world day in and day out, finally a story that is truly inspirational
It is a great inspirational story and this is what God expects of us, to do great thing for one another as he has done for us.
THEY all deserve those rings!    What a fantastic story in this day and age of just plain rotten athletes!

Way to go to ALL of you fine gentlemen!
God Bless , Vet

Bout time the media shared something positive.  Heck, they even managed that with President Bush in the article.  Let's see more of this please!
Reading this and the story of the young ladies carrying their opponent around the bases on the same day will make you run of Kleenex - God Bless You!
Its an honorable thing for the Giants organization to share with this man. By not turning their backs on this man for his Leadership and ability, offering focus and insight to what moves you, even after all the fan-fare and glitter of a Super Bowl victory, is a representation of character.
Sharing good an bad times, carry each other through it, success means so much more.

Go Army.

Hoorah Colonel!  Thanks for your service to this wonderful country!
Greg - I think that I can speak for all of your fellow classmates when I say how proud we are of you!

As an Eagles fan, I wondered as the year progressed, what was behind the Giants' success.  Most people figured they would end up in last place, after the Tiki Barber loss and the questions about Tom Coughlin.
By the time the playoffs came around, I found myself rooting for them.
Now we know.   Lt. Col. Gadson is a strong man, and the Giants were wise to recruit him.
amazing story...no wonder the giants won the super bowl :)

Amazing solider.  Bush's most undervalued quality - his reverence for our soliders.
What a wonderful story.  He should be an inspiration to all of us!
Great story - too bad he had to be on the stage with such an inept megalomaniac of a president
George Bush is the WORST president in the history of this country. But this is still a great article, even with him in it.....

It was the first year I ever watched a football game, went to a superbowl party and became a giants fan.  What higher praise can one man have than to be remembered as an inspiration. From this point on his life can only getter.  I wish them all God\s blessings.
This is what america truly is made of,strong men and women in the armed forces. this was inspirational story all round, from Lt.Col. Gadson to Eli and the whole gaints organization. what a great story in this day of the self center athelete. God bless America.    joe USMC '79
Great story.  The Giants have had such a magical and dazzling run.  And presenting this soldier with a ring is a gesture that will give and give for a good, long time!  He's probably already given the team more than they could ever give him.  Tremendous finish for an amazing team.
LTC Gadson is an interesting guy.  Looks to me like a candidate for higher rank.  I'm always curious as to the level of combat command experience our senior generals and admirals have, or if their major qualification is excellence at playing military politics.
No amount of preparation can overcome inspiration. Lt. Col. Greg Gadson THANK YOU for your sacrifice and service to our great country. God bless you and your family.

I am a prosthetist, manufacturer of artificial limbs, in New England and have watched our soliders come home with some terrible injuries. I know Greg will survive and carry the hopes of others in battle. All be it on the football field or in war. I just feel sad that it had to come to this.
GREAT STORY. True American Spirit all of you.
a heart-warming story.  good luck greg in all your future endeavors.   .........cast your bread upon the waters and it shall be returned unto you.
Despite my being a dedicated Patriots fan here in Raiderland, I really appreciated this story. Lt. Col. Gadson being able to see past his horrific war injuries while inspiring others is beyond selfless, brave, and meritorious; in that, he's a better man than most. It's a cruel and sick joke, though, that such a distinguished veteran had to share the stage with Bush, a child of privilege who managed to avoid active duty in the foreign war of his generation (please - no apples-and-oranges talk about his time in the Reserves) but had no apparent problem initiating the foreign war of this generation. Contrary to what too many people think, one CAN support the troops while being against the war. Unless hypocrite Bush is finally up to doing what he has had no evident compunction about asking hundreds of thousands of others to do (sending family/loved ones halfway around the world to fight his war - fat chance), let's bring the troops home from that hellhole of an expensive-yet-off-budget, unjust, undeclared, and unnecessary war for oil and profit.
The United States of America receives great healing
from articles like this. Love thy soldier.
I have been a Cowboys fan all my life, but the inspiration that comes from such a giving and selfless American as Colonel Gadson makes losing to the Giants easier to take and their Super Bowl victory a grand moment in NFL history.
Ahhhhh, a wonderful story for a change.  God bless Mr. Gadson, a true hero, and the Giants!
Great story! Too bad there are moron posters trying to make a political statement in their comments. Don't worry crybabies, one of the 3 dems will win in november. (maybe even that closet dem McCain!)
This is truly a great story about a Honorable and oustanding individual.  LTC Gadson is one great leader, who led by example, I was truly bless to serve with him during Desert Storm.  I wish him the best, this was truly the best news story of the day.  Thanks LTC Gadson for your service, Charlie Rock 5/18
I liked his message to the team, be professionals, play as a team, do your best, and coming from him, it inspired. He didnt go nuts, sell them a lot of phony hype, or make the game out to be more than it was. They had the most important game of their lives to play, but he had struggled to be alive and to walk and I think that put it in perspective for them. Great story, it actually made me feel good.
Lt Col Gadson Thank you for your service to this wonderful country. You are an inspirational man with exceptional character. God Bless You.
humbling to hear a man speak.
bush is the best president ever
Before this became a big story, it was also a little story.  Last summer I was at West Point and, coincidentally, the West Point football team alumni were holding their annual golf outing. I was there for another event, so I didn't see Greg but I heard there was an ex-football player who had lost his legs in Iraq who nevertheless showed up for the golf tournament, and how much support and he was getting from the others.  What great spirit he showed, just attending the event.  And what an inspriation his fellow players showed, making sure he knew that losing his legs could never separate him from their group.  We need to make sure all our fine vets feel this way.  Twenty or thirty years from now, when we can put this currently unpopular war in its proper perspective, we are going to thank our stars for the men and women who have stepped up.
President George Bush is a good man.  I'm proud that he honors our vets like LTC Gadson.  Thanks to the New York Giants for aiding this man in healing.
Congratulations to Col. Gadson and the N.Y. (Football) Giants. Both can be looked upon as inspirations.

When it is our turn to answer the call, may we all rise to the occasion. Wll done Sir. Well Done!

USA (Retired).
After the start of the season and the Giants determination to win when everyone else counted them out it is no wonder they won the Superbowl.  This man is a true hero and a definate fit for this team.  Giants you ned to keep him around.  Great run G-men and great story!
a true hero...now let's see some congressmen and senators in iraq, so their role isn't just sending our  nation's best into battle.
I thought comments only related to the blog would be approved. Then why were the two that are critical of the president allowed, i.e. Bobby, Philadelphia and not stupid, Seattle area? The person that checks and approves or rejects the comments must be a bleeding heart liberal, huh?
George Bush is among our GREATEST presidents.  His reverence for American service is almost unparalleled.  He, too, is a Giant.

God Bless Lt. Col. Gadson.
What an amazing man he must be; a true inspiration to all Americans and people the world over! I will pray for him as I do for all our brave American troops in Iraq and worldwide!
The news is usually so depressing that when a wonderful story like this comes along, I relish it.  Thanks.
This man is a true American in all respects: He served his country, he inspires others to greatness against all odds as he himself has done and he rises above all obstacles--Thank you for protecting my freedoms and the freedoms of my family and community.

I wish you the best,

FiftyYearFan
As a fellow combat veteran (Vietnam '69-70) I can understand how Gadson's sacrifices and humility can be such a tremendous source of inspiration to men who simply play a 'game'.  I can only hope that the Giants and their backers now realize who the real MVPs are.  I salute you, Sir.
as an army spouse, this story reminds me of all the positives in a military life.  Thank you, very much, for your service, your sacrifice, your wonderfully uplifting attitude and the humbling inspiration you bring to those around you.  keep up the great work and may God bless you in all of your endevours.
I would say that the Superbowl was easy compared to what Lt. Colonel Gadson's fight was all about.  God bless you Mr. Gadson and thank you for fighting for our country and way of life.
