‘Super Bowl ring minted for a true giant’

WASHINGTON - The Super Bowl football heroes brought their own special hero with them to the White House for their meeting with President Bush.

Army Lt. Col. Greg Gadson, who lost both legs in Iraq and later gave the New York Giants a pep talk that helped propel them to the Super Bowl, stood among the Giants players on his prosthetic legs and listened yesterday as President Bush singled him out for praise.

"I'm proud to be on the stage with this man," said the president. "He has got the Purple Heart and three Bronze Stars, and now he's got a Super Bowl ring minted for a true giant."

President Bush shakes hands with Lt. Col. Greg Gadson, the New York Giants inspirational co-captain, on the White House South Lawn on April 30 as quarterback Eli Manning looks on.

After his remarks, the president stopped and bantered for a moment with Gadson.

"He really just thanked me," Gadson told me today. "It was a genuine thanks, and he told me I was a good man and he was proud of me."

From one battleground to another
Gadson's journey from the battleground in Iraq to the South Lawn of the White House began on May 7 of last year when a roadside bomb tore apart his legs on a street in Baghdad. I first met him on Sept. 12 while he was recuperating at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

"I've been here a little over four months," he told me at the time, "and I've been on my feet for a little bit, and I'm making steady progress, so that's all I can ask for."

Ten days later, Gadson was asked by Mike Sullivan, a former football teammate at West Point and an assistant coach for the Giants, to speak to the 0-2 team before its game against the Washington Redskins.

"I just talked to them about life," said the former Army defensive end and linebacker. "I talked to them about their obligation as professionals to do their best."

The Giants went out the next day and upset the Redskins, 24-17. New York turned its season around and reeled off six straight victories and a record 10 straight road wins.

"If he wasn't with us at games, he'd call us and talk to the team beforehand," Giants quarterback Eli Manning said after yesterday's White House ceremony. "He's become a good friend to all the Giants."

‘An unbelievable inspiration’
Gadson gave the Giants another pep talk before their stunning 17-14 upset of the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl.

"I told them you have to play together as a team and believe in each other," he said.

I asked Manning what Gadson has meant to the Giants.

"Greg has just been an unbelievable inspiration to this team," said Manning. "He has a wonderful outlook on life. And still, everything he's been through, his spirits are high. He loves to laugh and smile and he's just a joy to be around."

I asked the 42-year-old Gadson what the Giants and their Super Bowl run meant for him.

"They've been part of my healing process, just being able to interact with them," Gadson said. "I mean, I'll tell you, the difference between me talking to them in September and in February was that I was still struggling to get on my feet, fighting through and working through and just trying to get myself better."

One soldier, one football team, two class acts.

What an inspirational story and what great comments, except for the not stupid? from Seattle and Bobby from Philly. Totally unnecessary folks.
Great article about two great teams and 1 greater man, The Lt. Col, you did'nt think I meant Bush, They probably woul'nt print this if I said something good about Bush, Eventhough He is The President of this country. Happy now.
Great article about one great team and 1 greater man, The Lt. Col,  Happy now.
Some things just go together in this world, and it sure seems like the New York Giants have found them another COACH! The NFL could use another soundly fit Coach that can lead and inspire and stand tall in victory and defeat.
I am humbled by LCOL Greg Gadson and honored to call myself an American in the company of such a man. May God bless him for his generous spirit - a GIANT amnong Giants!!

WOW, WHAT A GREAT STORY. A GREAT MAN OF COURAGE AND HONOR, THANK YOU COLONEL AND THANK YOU GIANTS FOR HONORING THIS TRUE AMERICAN HERO. GIANTS=CLASS ACT
There are more great individuals out there than the scum that usually make the headlines.  God bless the great ones like Gadson!
with a title like that i expected to see the ring!
David (Giants) slew Goliath (Patriots) aided by his trusty sling shot(Lt. Col. Gadson).
Talk about overcoming the odds!!!!!
thank you for putting the words together so elegantly
IN THIS TIME OF WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO FOR ME,(AND EVERYONE OWES ME SOMETHING), IT NOT A SURPRISE TO ME AS IT SHOULDN'T BE TO ANYONE ELSE. THAT THERE ARE STILL HONORABLE MEN AND WOMEN WHO SERVE THIER COUNTRY EVERY DAY. LT. COLONEL GADSON'S STORY IS A INSPIRATION TO MYSELF AND I AM SURE MANY OTHERS. TODAY'S YOUTH COULD LEARN MUCH FROM SERVING THIER COUNTRY. LOYALTY, DUTY, RESPECT, SELFLESS-SERVICE, HONOR, INTEGRITY, PERSONAL COURAGE ARE JUST A FEW THINGS I BELIEVE ALL YOUNG ADULTS SHOULD LEARN. THANK YOU LT.COLONEL GADSON FOR BEING THE EXAMPLE YOU ARE. GOD BLESS.
God Bless the Col. a true American hero and a hero to
all Giant fans. The Col. should pay a visit to the Miami Dolphins ,maybe something would rub off .
Thank you Col. you rae a true American and a true man.
A Real Champion, A real man, A real hero, and a True inspiration
I appreciate astory like this about life and learing, the the Giants and of the Lt. Col. great job, both class acts. Now Patriot fans stop your whining!! You CHOKED! You are and forever will be 18 - 1 (One BIG one)  Now I must also argue with this statement I read from an earlier post:
" Bush's most undervalued quality - his reverence for our soliders. "  Yeah now tell that to the FAMILIES of the thousands wounded and over 4,000 dead! By far his BEST quality, will be when he exits the White House on Jan. 20th, 2009!!!!  Go Hillary! *** No Obama "believer" here! ***   Thanks to the Giants for the SB XLII victory from a true fan residing in the Summer Home of the N.Y. Football Giants ~ Training Camp in Albany, N.Y.!!
I am crying.I love our military.  Thank you Col.Gadson!!  Without men like you we would not have this best of all countries.  God bless you and all our service personal.  They and their families give so much. GOD BLESS AMERICA
I'd be proud to be half the man Mr. Gadson is!!  Forget the politics, he deserved to be on the same stage as "his" team and the President.
Why do some people have to ruin a wonderful story with thier hate.  Go  find another spot to spill your hate.
Well done, Col. Gadson, Well done!
It is with amazament that even with this great story there are those individuals that can not resist the urge to down grade the leader of our country. The hate they must have must make their lives a sad story.
Great story and insperation from LT. Col. Gadson, we can all learn from him,  as for Bush if all it took to be a great president was honor the troops he'd would be one of the best to bad everything else he does proves he's dum as a rock and will go down as the worst of the worst

This story has touched my soul and has reconfirmed what I already know, that the essence of Real men are Heaven sent.  May God continue to bless and keep Mr. Gadsen.  Thank you.
What a wonderful story. Thank you NBC for posting it. Lt. Col. Gadson, what can I say except thank you for myself, my family, and every other American, for the sacrifice you and every other serviceman and service woman has made for us all.  God Bless you, your family, your comrades and every person fighting abroad.
A pair of legs for a thank you from the President and a ring; it doesn't sound like a good trade for me.  But, we must remember his noble cause: raising baby and young child mortality in Iraq to about 1 in 8.  Of course, the US military did that before in the early 1990s, and we got 9/11 as a result.
I was sitting two rows in the front that day at the White House when the Giants were there. It was an amazing moment. When President Bush talked about this man's courage, his strength, and his undying faith, there wasn't a dry eye in the crowd. One stood up and applauded him. I did, then the whole crowd. It was almost 3 minutes of tears, whistles and cheers. I'll never forget it.
We cannot say enough or do enough for those who so proudly serve, or have served.  Never ever forget them!
wOW, what a good story. But i wonder what happened to the countless junoir enlisted we never hear anything about?
It was an honor to meet you and to serve with you in Iraq, OIF V! I wasn't in the trauma room with you at the time of your injury but I was a member of the trauma team - Charlie Med 610 BSB!!! I have been following you since you were evacuated out of theater. My thoughts and prayers are with you today, LTC Gadson!! You look great standing in the photo!! And whenever I see you and read the articles about you I smile. May God continue to bless your life. Go Army!!!!!
Warrior's on the playing field ,Warrior on the Battlefield. Great Story.
Sir, thank you for your service, dedication and inspiration.

Do they make em great in America or what?
Thanks for your unselfish service Colonel, Both on and off the field of battle.
It is sad that people have to sink so low and mention how "terrible" our president is. America is about sticking together. This man was honored by his country and president and you have to turn it into propoganda? Sad....
Bravo Zulu LTC Gadson.
I have been a Green Bay fan for 49 years. I knew about the Col when the Giants beat the Pack. I went on to support the Giants in the Super Bowl. I'm retired military and a Vietnam Veteran and I think those of you that chose to make a political statement about this wonderful story stink!!! I could have said worse, oh did I mention that I have a BA in Political Science (perhaps I know a little about good/bad Presidents???)
It is about time that we hear something good in SPORTS and life. This is a story of a soldier who lost his legs but gain the respect of a PRO football team. Thank You for writing this story.
Greg, YOU embody us....inspire us...challenge us... and define us.  The Long Gray Line.....endures!

cant you people accept this as a wonderful story and not bring it down with rants about politics... there is nothing political in this story.. the story was written to honor one of americas many many heroes.. God Bless you Lt.Col.Greg Gadson. And God Bless all of Americas True Heroes..Home and Abroad.. HOOAH!!!!!!!!!
I will always support the troops.... and honor & value their successes and injuries.... but to have one of them aiding in the loss against my beloved Patriots.... man, that HURTS!  :)

This is a great story - other than the Pats losing.  So glad it was shared.
Thank You COL Gadson,I to am a vet'And understand why You are,an American Hero. And not stated in this  Blog,Youre conection to this sports team'Also places You on the Hero Level.Because'You have reached that Large segment of Americans,Who's Heros'Only come from sports. In reading these commints,I can well'see why,so meny Americans'are so quick to judge our President. Its not only that they have a short memory,It seems as I read'They have no clue whats going on in the Woarld'Because!! Theyre to involved in the QT'Sports Hero's.:Steve Fickler DN'CO.(GRATE STATEMENT)Boston Don Sac'CA.May be'You should watch less sports'And more of whats been going on in the Woarld,(FOR THE LAST TWENTY Pls' Years.
What has been left out of the story is the great job LTC Gadson and his unit 2-32 FA did in Baghdad. Not only were they doing a great job when Greg got hit, but they continued to do great things after he was evacuated. Their contribution to the security of Baghdad is another legacy of this great officer. Thanks for the help Greg.
Greg represents the thousands of other veterans who have served this country in wartime, to include myself, and he has done a superb job doing it.

Thanks Greg, it is an honor to call you a fellow warrior.

I missed this earlier, I am truly awestruck by the courage of LTC Gadson and his unselfish nature. He is truly the embodiment of our fighting men and women! The Giants showed what a class act they are by honoring this man in this way.
Those that chose to use this as a chance to slam our President, and push a political agenda, SHAME ON YOU!!!
You democrats should ask him what he thinks of his commander and chief, a dollar to a donut he says he is a great leader!
I've known LTC Greg Gadson for over 25 years.  We are high school and college classmates.   Greg has always been a tremendous person.  He continues to set the standard in everything he does.  I am proud of you Greg!!  KT
Great story. Even as a die hard Patriots fan, I have to smile to see a brother in arms find a calling and a road to recovery. HOOAH!
As a humble man himself, President Bush was able to recognize and honor another humble man. Lt. Colonel Gadson did not ask for recognition, he did not ask for honor, instead he strove to inspire others to greatness. A true motivational speaker is one who can put their life's experiences into a context that applies to others. If they can relate to your message they can be inspired to achieve great things. Lt. Colonel Gadson is a hero. For those of you who ardently oppose this war, you need to read this article again and realize that you have the freedom to speak your feelings because of these brave men and women risking their lives to protect you and your rights. Look at the sacrifices they make. Lt. Colonel Gadson took something negative and turned it into something positive to help others. And President Bush recognized that quality in him, as did the NY Giants football team. I respect and honor President Bush. Why? Because he has an almost religious reverence for those men and women who risk their lives every single day to protect ours. God Bless America and all of our soldiers who defend her.
If you served in the Armed Forces, in a war or not, officer or enlisted. "YOU ARE ALL HEROES AND AN INSPIRATION".

I salute all of you!
Great job Lt. Colonel Gadson.  You show a football team what they could do when they put their minds to it.  Its just too bad you had to be on the same stage as a president who has this country all screw up.  May god bless you sir.  GO ARMY.
