Polygamist ‘girls’ surprise investigators

Posted: Wednesday, May 21, 2008 3:33 PM

SAN ANGELO, Texas – They really do look younger.

As the first round of individual hearings for mothers from the Yearning For Zion ranch continue in San Angelo, perhaps the most interesting fact to emerge is that many women from the polygamist sect look much younger than their actual age.

More than 460 children from the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints ranch were shipped out of San Angelo’s Coliseum last month and scattered to foster care facilities across the state.

Officials from Texas Child Protective Services (CPS) said at least 31 of the mothers, or pregnant "girls," in state custody were underage. That number, they conceded, included 26 women/girls whose ages were "in dispute."  The women told CPS officials they were adults, and claimed they had documentation to prove it, but investigators insisted that they "looked like minors," so they were kept in custody.

Fast forward to this week, where judges are holding status hearings on the cases. Unlike prior court proceedings before, when a judge considered all of the families together in one giant, chaotic hearing, these hearings are happening on a "per mother" basis. After just the first two days of hearings, the number of alleged underage mothers has dropped dramatically, from 31 down to 23, and it could keep falling.

Turns out, many of the "disputed" minors are adults after all, a point CPS hasn’t conceded until now. One of the "girls" is actually 27 years old.

Only a handful of the 168 mothers involved in the case have had their individual hearings so far – they will all be complete by June 4. Many of the "disputed" mothers are still due court hearings. One has to wonder how many more "child brides" will turn out to be adults before this is all over.

It’s an important point, because CPS investigators justified escalating the April 3 raid, and ultimately the removal of every child, based on their observations once they entered the ranch for the first time in response to a call for help.

They claimed to have seen numerous underage mothers and pregnant minors while searching for an alleged 16-year-old victim of sexual abuse named "Sarah." Sarah, was officially considered to be a real person until Monday, when CPS dropped her court case, acknowledging that she doesn’t actually exist. State police are now investigating the calls for help from "Sarah" as hoax phone calls, made by an adult from Colorado with a history of making false reports.

All along, residents on the ranch have claimed the widespread pattern of underage marriage alleged by CPS investigators simply isn’t true. Sect members have conceded that there may have been a few cases of minors being "spiritually married" and conceiving children, but they say that’s the exception, not the rule.

Women on the ranch, they’ve suggested, simply look young, because they don’t wear makeup, and their all-natural diet keeps their skin healthy. They avoid almost all processed foods and all of their dairy products come from their own cows – cheese, butter and unpasteurized milk.

A couple of other interesting points have emerged so far:

Despite the judge who ordered the removals asking the state to do everything possible to keep children from the same families together in foster care, many parents say their children are scattered across the state. Several are spending hundreds of dollars, driving thousands of miles each week to visit children that are up to 900 miles apart.

Also, many parents are complaining that their children have had religious texts taken from them, specifically, The Book Of Mormon.

CPS workers say they’ve only taken texts that include pictures of Warren Jeffs, the jailed leader of the FLDS sect. They say it would be inappropriate for children to have pictures of Jeffs (he’s the father of several in custody) because he’s been convicted of a sex crime. CPS says it’s given the kids replacement texts that don’t include the photos.

And a bit of breaking news:

Today, CPS workers attempted to gain to access to the ranch to search for more children they believe may be living there, but they were turned away by ranch residents who said they didn’t have a proper warrant.

One wonders how much of this is due to bigatry of believing that someone who is not "modern" (internet, etc.) must necessarily be unintelligent.
People who for religious reasons avoid internet and TV may be much more normal that the general public thinks.
I suspect we have crossed the line separating child welfare and religious persecution.

Think about this: Many of the "underage" mothers have been found to be adults. The remaining number of "underage" mothers is approaching the number of "illegitimate pregnancies" outside the religion. It is entirely possible that when a woman/girl finds herself "in a family way" the community sees she's married to a man who assumes responsibility for marriage and children.

At any rate, the separation of the children constitutes a real hardship on the families, and seems to have been deliberately arranged by CPS to cause inconvenience.

It is possible that the religious practices are in violation of the secular law. Where do we draw the line? Age of responsibility and age of consent are not universal, international standards. Many countries, including most of our Central and South American neighbors, allow marriage at much younger ages than we do.

These people are different from the mainstream, but the Constitution should be protecting their differences, not persecuting them.
The book of mormon, flds and all this is a made up religious cult.  Mormons were founded by the first cult leader Joseph smith who supposedly spoke to god on a mountain here in upstate NY.  Well, then he moved to Utah where the wild west was still in effect.  Mormonism is a made up religion developed for the ego of Joseph Smith and his followers.  As L Ron hubbard put it, if you want to get rich, start your own religion (the founder of scientology, another made up religion)
Really TX CPS, make sure that you have a real case before you do something this drastic.  I'm not saying that there aren't some illegal things taking place, we don't know yet, but we should have SOLID EVIDENCE before removing over 450 children from their parents.
Rape of a child or children would be horrendous; forced marriage of an underage girl ghastly. But, this raid smelled like a trumped-up game from the start, and it stinks to high Heaven. Separating these children from their mothers without hard evidence SURELY can't be in the children's best interest.

It appears the state (or county or whatever) is allowed to emotionally harm these children at whim. It actually appears they are persecuting these folk. If something is wrong here, do it right; don't bull-doze over people and their kids.

As the government continues to overstep it's bound, my question is "Who's next?" Next, it might be you or me.

I challenge people like Dan Abrams (who I often enjoyed listening to, and who assume the authorities are telling the truth) to investigate and find out if CPS and the government create this fictitious "Sarah" to create an illicit opening to raid these folks homes.  Do some real investigative journalism for a change, and don't just take "official sources" information at face value!
The feds need to step in here. I am sorry but this is wreaking of government mismanagement and abuse of power. I know of NO other child abuse case where an agency abuses the mothers in this manner, makes blanket statememts, ignores gov't documents (Birth certs, SSN cards, Licenses, etc). They have torn entire families apart and have not filed a single charge. This has all the markings of the government we formed the US to escape from. Thinks of it, they took these women, ignored their licenses, birth certificates, and all other docs and imprisoned them in foster homes with no charge or reasonable timely due process. I am no friend of the FLDS, or their beliefs, but the government is the bigger threat to society in this action.
The truth shall set them free and I hope they sue the crap out of The State of Texas.  Welcome to the United Police States of America.
I think that the media should do a story on the Keeping Children and Families Safe Act and its predecessor CAPTA. I am sure that people across the country would find it very enlightening the leeway that the state is given with which to take children. It would seem that in this instance alone, the state is being abusive in its handling of the case.
I think its all about the money ... Someone wants the land that the church is setting on so they have to justify a raid and workers and the 30 million dollars in taxpayer money to take care of the children and adults in custody so where are they going to get 20 million of it probably from the sale of the land those people worked so hard on ..This is a very sad story of religious persecution, and destruction of those people as outlined in the  CPS CASE PLAN to find home job etc very sad this is happening in USA

I can only pray the Governor and other officals step in and say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

And i hope the disputed minors who are now adults sue for being held captive against there will, and Parents sue and seek restitution from  state for Emotionally damaging there children with the unnessary  raid and everything that has went on and that was witnessed.
I'm sorry, I am not for "underage" marriage and children being born from such young mothers but in truth nature prepares the body only society has deemed it wrong and at that not all societies.  What I am for is the freedom to choose and freedom of religion. It seems both sides are out of line with those values.

Somehow I am reminded of Germany during the era Hilter was coming to power.
NO charges have been filed against anybody for a crime.  Yet, the state of Texas is still holding these children captive, and some adults, and demanding the parents jump through hoops to create a safe environment before they'll return their children.  This ought to make every parent in Texas scared to death over the power that CPS claims to have over our children.  Where is the outrage!?
It SOUNDS like the state has blown this all out of porportion.  If this was an amish community, would the media try to justify automatic weapons & armored personnel carriers?  Is taking custody of these "children" for up to a year really legal?  I'm really troubled by this, its bordering (sorry) on religious persecution.  My understanding of the amish/mennonite communities is in the event of teen pregnancy similar "spiritial commitments" are made until the mother is of legal age.  It certainly sounds alot better than whats happening in the major cities the last 20+ years.  There should be laws against these so-called "children & youth services" to protect parents from abusive "advocates".  They've turned serious allegations into a circus, & how many truely needy children aren't getting help because of this "drama"?
So far we have learned that the children are in better health, better educated and there may be only about 6 underage pregnancies which in a small community is not unheard of.  The CPS has presented the children with questions about things that children that are that isolated should never had to have heard of and they have taken them from their families.  I forget- who are the criminals here?  This will go down in history as one of the worst goverment abuses ever and will hopfully reform CPS around the country.  Someone needs to go to jail and they are not living on the ranch.
Good living does in fact reduce the appearance of aging, and in home births and documentation, it's also easy to adjust dates for specific needs.

In some cases, adoptees have been given birth years and dates that suited their adoptive parents.

It will be important to use science to help with this.
Sarah is of course Rozita Swinton, and the question remains, when did Texas know who she was? A clue can be found in the Amazon sales rank of Carolyn Jessop's book about the FLDS:

http://charteo.us/amzn/items/0767927567

Running the cursor over the curve will give the dates. The spikes in the sales ranking correspond to breaking news in the case. Except for the first one on March 21-3 (Rozita called the women’s shelter a week later on March 29.) Why the sudden interest before anything happened? Probably because Rozita called Texas law enforcement before she called the women's shelter, and law enforcement bought cartons of the book to bring their people up to speed. Then they gave Rozita a number to call at the shelter, a number they knew had no caller ID or recording capability. If they secretly knew who she was, if the first warrant was obtained without good faith, every bit of evidence collected is inadmissible in a criminal trial. Not surprisingly, Texas has not charged anyone, but has instead attempted to punish the parents by punishing the children.

I'm glad FLDS is finally standing up for themselves a bit. This is a case of persecution, pure and simple. Want to hurt someone, don't go after them, go after their children. The First and Fourth Amendments have been trampled into the dust by this travesty of justice!
This is the worst abuse of goverment power that I've seen in the US.  A crime has been committed by the CPS.  If the state of Texas went to the public housing in Houston and rounded up 450 kids and adults I'm sure you'd find drug use, under age girls with kids and a whole lot worse.  I can't imagine anything much worse for the FLDS children. Put in the foster care system.  I have never met anyone in foster care that did'nt tell me of some sort of abuse.  Check the health of these children now compared to when they were snatched by these crazy state workers.  The judge that allowed this should be removed from the bench.  Hope the FLDS has decent lawyers and I hope for the sake of all of us that even Texas has to obey the Constitution of the United States.
The parents should present a TEXAS SIZE LAWSUIT against the State for terrorizing peaceful families and taking kids away from their perfectly orderly and happy lives, as weird as this may sound. I´ve known horror stories about inner-city CPSs in "regular society". I don´t care if they are polygamist and live separate from the mainstream, as long as kids are happy and healthy in whatever Communal arrangement. They are surely better off in there than in foster care with strangers.
"Somehow I am reminded of Germany during the era Hilter was coming to power."

Oh, so you were in Germany when Hitler came to power?

I think you don't know what you're talking about.
I'm anticipating a law suit, and a HUGE one, when TDCS case falls apart and they're forced to return these children to their parents.
I certainly do not endorse child molestation, but I'll think this raid and the kidnapping of these children 'just' when every Catholic child is removed from every Catholic home and investigated for molestation by Priests (that is happened is no disputable) and every foster child is removed from every foster home and investigated for neglect/abuse (this too is no longer arguable).
And quite frankly I HOPE the FLDS file a huge law suit against TDCS with the goal of restituting their expenses and forcing accountability upon them including specific verbiage in law specifically allowing for grievance suits against DCS agencies and staff members who facilitated (I LOVE that word) wrongful DCS pursuance of malicious accusations against parents in the state of Texas (and Florida, Illinois, Georgia, etc).
BTW Glenn Sacks site and the Fathers and Families site are both following this closely.

Let's try to remember that after the initial raid on the compound there were a half dozen FLDS women who chose to go to a shelter for abused women.  Now picture the gate at the YFZ ranch with the padlock.  It would seem that there were women and children being held against their will at that ranch.

You may want to check into the news stories about similar ranches in other states that are also FLDS, and listen to the interviews with the women and teenage girls who have escaped.  Listen to the plight of the FLDS teenage boys who have been "ex-communicated" by being dropped off in the middle of a desert somewhere.

I read that a sheriff who has had to deal with the FLDS in another state refers to them as the "American Taliban."  The men obviously have all the rights and authority, and the women are subservient to the men.  While some may think of this as just a return to earlier times, as being old-fashioned, it is just another exercise in misogyny.  It is men taking advantage of women, and in this case children as well.

Yes, the U.S. provides for religious freedom.  However, religious freedom does not free religions from operating within the laws of our countries and our states.

I can't believe that my country allows a community that does the things that that this one does to continue to exist.  At the bare minimum, if these children are sent back to this ranch, there should be monthly checks by the authorities to see if there are women or teenagers who wish to leave the community since they may not otherwise have an opportunity to get out.
Bless these "Mothers"! They "CHOOSE" a "Simple Life" style and "Religion", Politicions "Choose" to interpet "Bill of Rights" as a $ Dollar situation, To do whats being done is "SHAME" for the mothers and children! Is this the "FREEDOM" I served my "COUNTRY" for? CPS "Child Protection Service" What Protection? This is all over their head person "Jeff ?" He broke the law. Why should the "Folks" of his leadership be punished? They never broke the law, "Jeff" did!
Has anyone remembered the facts?  Underaged girls are being forced into marriages and sex with older men that they did not choose.  Teenaged boys are forced out of the sect and cut off from their families.  Women and children are being reassigned to different men against their will.  This is all victimizing, pure and simple.  Oh, and let's not forget - Warren Jeffs recently admitted that he is not a prophet, and that he slept with underaged girls who were related to him.

Exactly what is the problem with the state stepping in?
Where are you from?  Where are you going? Show me your papers. I don't believe you...these papers look fake. Hands behind your back, your going to jail.
Seriously, if you're not exactly like the rest of society and you dress funny and have strange marriage customs? Think twice about building a huge Limestone Temple outside of town with a guard gate that makes it look like a compound. It scares law enforcement and it scares the locals. It scares the whole state. The reason this happened is simple. You're customs are weird to most people even possibly illegal and though building big proud temples is legal it attracts a lot of attention. If you're strange live simple and keep to yourself and don't attract attention especially if you live in a compound that has a big temple. Then nobody will notice you. Don't be stupid and ask why were you/ are you scary. Even though patience and understanding wasn't departed to you in sorting out exactly what was going on there exactly. You were viewed as a threat and tagged a monster and that's why the angry mob came with torches and pitch forks ready to storm your white limestone tower. So that THEY could feel safe again. It was never about your children, it was about theirs. Most people live afraid of things they don't understand and that we both have in common weather average citizen or large white temple builders outside of town. It was seen as a dangerous organization full of monsters that hurt children. The worst kind. Still being decided, but it was felt you were too dangerous to just ask or hang around and observe. Besides, you did kind of keep to yourself, but who could miss that big scary white temple with self proclaimed polygamy doctrine lurking inside? You asked for it really.
This is NOT a religion, it is all made up and a disguise for a cult where the men control, brainwash and abuse the children and the women. It benefits the men in their sexual exploitation of girls, especially the cult leaders, who I am sure benefit monetarily as well. If you opened the gates and gave the young girls (and boys) a safe option and knowledge to know the difference I bet many would run! It is tragic for a young child to be seperated from its mother, of that I am cetain. Perhaps the state is not handling this ideally, but they are faced with many obstacles and challenges. It's about time that place got busted up. It is a crime what these women and children have endured and many don't even know any different. Heartbreaking!
Normally I'm against suing the state for hardships, but this is so much their intentional fault that I strongly hope every one of these people turn right around and sue the state of Texas and the CPS.  Over the past few years, CPS has tried enacting powers unto itself which is has no valid right to have, and this separation without evidence, with no real regard for the children, is sickening.
Oh sure set them all free and let these old men continue to pray upon these young girls and breed them like rabbits all in the name of religion.
I have no brief whatsoever for anybody, especially a child, being forced into a marriage.  But the Texas CPS has really blown it big time on this one with their wildly disproportionate actions.

Assuming a scheme to marry off underage girls, one would think the vulnerable population would be girls from 12 to the legal age of marriage.  So in the worst case, CPS could reasonably have a responsibility to interview the girls in that age group and offer them refuge if any of them report abuse of pressure to marry somebody they don't want to.  Children 12 and up know when they're in an abusive situation.  It would not take much time to set up confidential interviews for these children; indeed, I strongly suspect this segment of apprehended children has already made it perfectly clear to CPS that they do not feel they are in an abusive situation -- because we can be absolutely sure that CPS would trumpet to the court any such child's confirmation of abuse.

The other children are not in any type of imminent danger from their families and should never have been taken from their families.

Yes, there may be some underage girls who are pregnant, just as you will commonly find elsewhere in America, some by boyfriends of similar age and others by older males.

CPS reminds me of how Canadian Indian children were kidnapped into residential schools for their own good.  It took some 50 years for the stories of abuse to come out and for restitution to be paid.  Sadly the very fact of being confined in residential schools destroyed their connection to their culture, language and worst of all their parenting skills so that the damage continues to their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

I look forward to FLDS suing the CPS and collecting millions in punitive damages for the psychological damage and indignity inflicted upon each seized child and "disputed minor".
As we all know, the foster care system has it's own share of abusers.  I hate to think of these children that have been taken from their own loving, caring homes and placed in the care of or proximity to someone who is going to abuse them, physically, mentally, emotionally or sexually.  Oh,  and let's not forget that the majority of these adopters are Southern Baptist, so is there such a thing as  spiritual abuse?
God Loves all of us but we all have a  plan that god set forth. Plural marriage is not one of them.Read your true bible. God Bless all children and mothers! Praise The Lord For He Is Good All The Time!
FLDS is not an isolated incident. CPS regularly violates rights of citizens in every state, one family at a time. Now they tried a Texas-style roundup of an entire community, but it doesn't compare to the national crisis which may be worse than any outside terrorist threat that we face. They keep everything secret by laws that are supposed to protect the children's privacy, and they misuse immunity laws for social workers. Check out
http://connecticutdcfwatch.com/
for stats on all types of abuse and fatalities in child protective custody vs families. It seems the reports from the The National Center on Child Abuse and Neglect (NCCAN) in Washington have been removed since they were on the net earlier this year, and the NCCAN has been apparently taken over by a new governmental organization that only seems to report incidents not in foster care to hide the truth.

You can bet they are ignoring any real threats to children because those that "fall through the cracks" of CPS are great propaganda sources for more government funding from our pockets.  It's insane and the CPS system would be better if it were shut down and we could watch the statistics fall back down.

It's a multi-billion dollar industry that must be putting some of that from our pockets (via taxes) into campaign funds (by contributions from government-supported child-exploiters) to politicians through social workers, otherwise the lawmakers and politicians might address it and commit to do something about it.

Kidnapping at taxpayer expense is unconscionable, and traditional kidnappers at least might return the child once the ransom is paid, rather than villianizing the parents and using divisive tactics against the family.

This is just the tip of the iceburg.
Ken from Ontario,

Joseph Smith never lived in Utah, he'd already been murdered by the mob of soldiers at Carthage Jail.  The Saints moved to Utah after having their land taken from them not once but 3 times.  Until 1978 it was legal to kill a Mormon on sight in Missouri.  The FLDS are a breakaway group that was not pleased with the Manifesto that stopped the practice of polygamy.  But I can say Hinduism is a made up religion of 100,000 Gods, but they have a right to practice their faith.

The wonder of this country is the idea that we are free to practice our faiths.  I grew up in Pennsylvania, founded by the Quakers and home of the Amish.  Nobody says anything bad about them.  (Okay, a few of us complain about the horse and cart on the highway, but that's beside the point).

I am not saying convert, but please, before you open your mouth to comment, how about educate yourself just a tinsy bit on the subject.  You don't have to believe, just know the facts.
i'm sorry but i think cps did the right thing by taking these children because the whole thing is just sick women being married to men with 5 or 6 wives and having all these children its not right these young girls on the ranch are being raised to do the same thing as a mother of two i would never allow such a thing with my children.
Unfortunately the FDLS group in a whole is very sick with deep rooted practices that involve brainwashing and training children to do what the adults want.  The children know no different because that is the way they are raised.  The women go along with those practices because many of them may actually enjoy it and do not understand it is wrong, while other women know fully well it is wrong and do it any way.

The men, well they are all sick, period!  There is nothing in the bible that states that men must have many wives to get into heaven.  In the earlier biblical days, back when Adam and Eve were the only male and female on the earth, there was a need to cross breed so to speak because God said be fruitfull and populate the earth.  Enough is enough already, that advise by God was not intended to be something we are to continue to do.  And there is absolutely no place in the bible that says men should continue to have many wives or as many as the FDLS men say they need to get into heaven.

After all is said and done, those who go along with that type of sick lifestyle will infact be punished by God.  The bible states over and over again that infidelity or staying from your wife or husband, not wives or husbands, is enought to push you from the path towards everlasting life.  I hope they never get their kids back, ever.  And the women who allow their children to be raised by those demons should be punished as well.
What is wrong with all of you?  Even if there is only one minor who was forced into a marriage and is pregnant, the raid was worth it.  You're willing to let this type of abuse continue?  The fact that there are unwed teenage mothers in other places has nothing to do with this case, they were not FORCED to be with an older man. It makes me sick to think that some 14 year old girl is going to be RAPED by a perverted older man and that this act is protected and considered okay to some of you under the sheild of religious freedom.  The freedom of religion that we have in this country does not include sexual abuse.
Ok...So what about the men, the children and mothers are not the criminals, they are the victims!, being brain washed by these men into believing that god wants them to allow these men to sleep with and have children with as many women as he can, and it makes him somehow closer to god. Men are using this to thier adventage for their own pleasure and control. very sad :(.
I believe we have crossed a fine line of state and religion. When we started this country our four fathers said one nation under God. In this statement and in the guidlines they created they wanted us all to be able to practice ANY religion we want. DO we tell anyone else that they cannot practice theirs? No because there is a fine line and CPS just crossed it. CPS does do a lot of good but lately  in the past few years or more they have been crossing their bounderies. With some light set on them maybe we can weed them out. I don't care that they may have a weird reiligion. Just because I think so doesn't make it right for me to lie and go in their and remove all their children. We took the Pledge of Alegence out of schools that were placed there just because of people being affended how long are we going to let our rights of religion be put down?
I cannot possibly be the only person on the face of the Earth that feels that these children would be MUCH better off not being corralled by a band of zealots and child molesters. These people are crazy. I don't care how great they look for their age. They are forcing children to behave as adults, be it as wives or their respective abusers. Getting these children away from that element might possibly give them the one thing that all children deserve- an actual childhood.
Our grandmothers and ancestors worked just as hard in the fields, had as many children, ate as healthy and natural foods as these women, but they rarely if ever looked younger than their years. Indeed, they aged faster as a result of multiple childbirth, hard work, and exposure to the sun, so I am not at all convinced by the arguments put forth in this article.
In light of the way the government is handling these unfortunate mothers, I did some research to see if there are records of other well known totalitarian regimes acting in a similar manner.
To my surprise, during the NAZI Germany such mothers as the FLDS were awarded medals of Honor by the government. (Mothers Cross)
Before World War II, our good friend Stalin was arresting mothers for teaching their own kids religious ideas that “violated” the USSR state laws. After the Soviet Union became our enemy, they changed their previous laws against motherhood.
Modern China has laws against mothers with more than one child.
All Muslim countries encourage women to get married early and have as many children as possible.
So it seems that our American government is of the ones that are not favoring motherhood and is looking for ways to discourage girls from becoming mothers.
No wonder the country’s family values are on a spiral fall, and we rely so much on immigration.
What happens to most of the boys/young men? These people have the same number of children of both genders as does the general population. Among the hundreds of children taken from that compound, the number of boys and girls among the toddlers and young children was more or less equal, but the older the children, the fewer the males. If men marry three or more wives - some even have tens of wives, there simply aren't enough women for all the men, so how come the compound wasn't full of unmarried young men? Do they get killed off when they no longer accept to work hard in the fields and building, or are they chased away? It is from this kind of fate too that these children need to be protected.
I am so glad to finally see the outrage over this whole case.  Anyone who thinks the state is looking out for these children needs to really look at what is happening.  I do not agree with the FLDS but I do agree with thier right to believe as they do.  If we don't stand up now we never will
To: Ken Ontario....EVERY SINGLE "religion" has been "made up" by people; Christ, if he existed, didn't write The Bible himself for example.
Also: Someone here mentioned money as a motive for the FLDS Ranch invasion; you're on the right track, but wrong intended target. It's not the real estate the ranch is sitting on that they want, it was the anticipated and forthcoming Child Support Order that Texas needs. In order to continue to qualify for their annual Federal millions, which funds fully two-thirds of all State Child Support Collection and Case Management, they need to drum up single mother households or faster kids. As of this writing, the great State of Pennsylvania is hustling legislation through to the Governor for signature so that state will not lose the $700 million ANNUAL Federal Dollars it receives for it's Child Support Collection Industry. That Federal Money NEVER makes its way into the lives of children of divorce or impoverished kids. Instead, that Federal Funding makes-up most of the payroll, medical benefits, paid vacation time, and retirement of those employed by that industry. By the way, YOUR Form 1040 my fellow tax payers!
Partially in response to an earlier post:  ALL religons are "made up religious cults".  Every single one of them.  Whether or not you believe in a specific religion or philosophy should not determine whether it gets the same protections under the law.  When the predominately Christian government wanted to annex Utah, they banned polygamy, thereby breaking the First Amendment right they came here to establish in the face of persecutions in Europe.  Now we are supposed to be more enlightened as a society, and yet still alternative religions are looked upon as "crazy" or "cults", because the main stream of society fails to recognize value in anything not of their choosing.  Leave them alone unless you have definate proof of wrong doing.
We had a woman write a book about her life in polygamy.  Her children read it and said, "Mom I was there and that's not what happened".  She said, "This is my book and I'll write it the way I want".

There you have it.  People are out there to create trouble to get back at a person, people or whatever and it isn't the facts as is seen it others eyes.  No one is told they can't leave.  Some just can't do it without some druma attached.
CPS SOUNDS LIKE THE TRUE CHILD ABUSERS HERE. WHAT TEXAS HAS DONE IS CRUEL, COLD, AND JUST PLAIN EVIL. I WILL NOT DENY THAT A FEW CRIMES OCCURED AT THE COMPOUND, HOWEVER, THOSE ARE THE ONLY CASES THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN INVESTIGATED. TEXAS AND CPS SHOULD BE SO ASHAMED OF WHAT THEY HAVE DONE TO THESE INNOCENT WOMEN AND CHILDREN. CPS IS ADMITTING NOW, MANY MOTHERS ARE OF AGE, BOYS WERE NOT SEXUALLY ABUSED, MANY OF THEIR ALLEGATIONS ARE SIMPLY FALSE. MY HEART GOES OUT TO THESE POOR WOMEN AND THEIR CHILDREN, ALSO THE INNOCENT MEN INVOLVED. I THOUGHT THIS WAS AMERICA? THESE PEOPLE'S RIGHTS HAVE BEEN HORRIBLY TRAMPLED. I THINK MUCH OF AMERICA IS WATCHING THESE HEARTWRENCHING SCENES WITH HORROR. SOMEONE NEEDS TO STAIGHTEN THIS WHOLE AFFAIR OUT, BEFORE THESE CHILDREN ARE LEFT TOO SCARRED, NOT BY THEIR FAMILIES, BUT CHILD ABUSE BY CPS THEMSELVES. WHY WERE THE MEN, WHO CPS ALLEGE ARE THE PERPERTRATORS, SIMPLY JUST NOT REMOVED FROM THE MOTHERS AND CHILDREN. WOULD THAT HAVE NOT SAVED SOME TAXPAYER MONEY, BEEN MUCH LESS ABUSIVE, AND THE SITUATION STILL COULD HAVE BEEN LOOKED INTO. I HAVE THREE CHILDREN, IF THIS COULD HAPPEN IN TEXAS, AND BE ALLOWED TO HAPPEN, WHO'S NEXT? THIS IS A TERRIBLE SITUATION, IF THE FLDS THOUGHT THE OUTSIDE WORLD WAS EVIL BEFORE, THEY PROBABLY REALLY THINK SO NOW. I'LL HAVE TO SAY I AGREE WITH THEM. PLEASE GIVE THESE CHILDREN BACK TO THEIR MOTHERS. CPS IS GRASPING AT STRAWS NOW. THESE PEOPLE NEED COMPASSION AND UNDERSTANDING, NOT CRUELTY.
This case has been an appalling breach of civil liberties. The TX CPS has attempted to try the 'case' in the 'court' of public opinion with unproven and sensational allegations. But as facts are lining up, the 'case' has consistently fallen apart. I smell a very, very expensive damages suit.
PRESUMED Innocent, untill PROVEN Guilty. I seem to remember that from some place. In a Police State it is perfectly acceptable to falsely accuse someone and expect the state to send in their legions of armed stormtroopers to arrest with the power of the state.
Folks, the ongoing litigation is a constant in our government these days (the founding fathers ARE turning over in their graves). This is not about anything other than power and the inability for CPS to appologize. They should be prosecuted to the fullest. Send letters to your congressmen and complain about the laws. Dont just let them keep giving themselves more power. The families need to be reunited and reunited NOW!
