Border officials fear growing Mexican drug war

Posted: Friday, May 23, 2008 8:07 AM

COLUMBUS, N.M. – Talking with officials in this high-desert town, it doesn't take long to understand just how concerned they are over the widespread violence south of the border, which they can't control.

From the American side of the U.S. Port of Entry in Columbus you can actually look down the streets of Palomas, Mexico – the town is that close. The problem is that Palomas, along with other Mexican cities, has fallen victim to a vicious turf war between rival Mexican drug cartels that has claimed about 4,000 lives since the start of last year. Among those assassinated are high-ranking Mexican police officials.

In tiny Palomas, some 40 people have died in drug shootouts so far this year. The residents live in fear of getting caught in the crossfire and spend much of their time indoors. Recently, all of the town's police officers resigned and the police chief sought political asylum in the United States, claiming his life was in danger. Victims shot up in Palomas are often brought to the border in the hope they'll be treated in American hospitals.

VIDEO: Border town violence presents dangers for school children

Watching all this from Columbus, Luna County Sheriff Raymond Cobos told us he is worried the Mexican drug war could spread. "My big concern, and the concern of most officials here, is that it's going to spill over into the United States, into this community," he said.

The mayor of Columbus, Eddie Espinoza, is also keeping a close eye on Palomas, which he used to frequent. Now he is more cautious and fears that, in retaliation for recent killings there, even more gunfire could erupt, perhaps on his side of the border.

"I believe it will get much worse than it is now," he said. "I think we haven't seen the boiling point. I think we're still waiting for that to come."

School children – a dangerous commute
Everyone is worried that something could happen to any of the 400 American-born children who live in Palomas but cross the border daily to go to school the United States in either Columbus or Deming, New Mexico. Early on weekday mornings they all walk to the U.S. border station, clear immigration, board yellow school buses and then head north to class. All of these children are American citizens, carrying with them either a U.S. passport or a birth certificate.

Not long ago, the grim possibilities in that scenario came into clear focus when shots rang out along the Mexican side of the border fence, just as children were getting off a bus to go home.

Sheriff Cobos was standing watch near the border crossing when it happened. "We had to take immediate steps to stop the children, turn that bus around, shut this highway down and try to coordinate with the Border Patrol to provide security for the immediate area here."

Now, whenever the buses load or unload, sheriff's deputies are assigned to keep an eye on the children. After a particularly violent weekend in Palomas, in which seven people were killed in two shootouts, heavily-armed federal officers were assigned to provide protection.

As for the children, many are fully aware of the violence breaking out near their homes. "At night we get scared 'cuz we hear all kinds of shooting," said one boy at the bus stop.  "They're killing people around us," added a girl as she walked back toward Palomas. "You can hear it when it happens."

Border police oversee students going to school

With increased drug violence over the border in Palomas, Mexico, police from the Luna County Sheriff's office and New Mexico State Police stand guard while a young student goes back and forth to school.

School officials say attendance among these children, which normally is quite high, has fallen off since the violence escalated. At the Columbus elementary school, principal Hector Madrid has brought in counselors to help teachers address the children's fears. "They're exposed to this daily," he said. "They've come with feelings on their shoulders and we have to deal with it and work with them."

Meanwhile, Mexican President Felipe Calderon vows to defeat the traffickers and has deployed 24,000 troops to fight them. And in Congress a passionate debate rages over how much the United States should do to help.

Watching all this unfold from his vantage point, Cobos grows more concerned. "For us, it's a tragedy just waiting to happen. I want to do everything I can to eliminate that possibility."

send in army on both sides and punish severely the drug dealers. Look at the number of people killed by them and other issues created by the situation and please do not talk to me about the 'rights' of criminals.
Why are Mexican children attending U.S. schools while still living in Mexico? And who's paying the school taxes for these familie's children to attend American schools. What a sham!!!!!!!
Why are the children going to school in Mexico.  They live there.  I don't care if they are American born.  The live in Mecixo and should go to school in Mexico.
Just shows you how greed can make a person so bad. Shooting around children? How can a person go so low? You value your drugs and money over another person's life, especially children? Disgusting waste of a human being...
What I want to know is; if these "American Born Kids" go to school on the U.S. side; who is paying for this? The parents of these kids live in Mexico- their not paying taxes- so who is?
Too bad that our government had to intefere in Mexico's attempt to change their drug laws. They realize that the "War on Drugs" is a losing battle and now they are paying dearly with the lives of their police for America's strongarm tactice to control the laws of other countries. Makes me want to cry.
- we want the drugs, so they provide us with the drugs, unfortunately a lot of other things come with that. we are just as much to blame as they are, even more so. if wanted tomatoes, they would sell us tomatoes, but we want drugs!!
The USA is sufering the rsult of its business and geopoltical forces, wanting and allowing, illegal aliens to enter our country.  In my city in Washington State, we have USA drug-use and manufacturer problems within the residedntial areas.
We have many recent citizens in our area and most are upstanding citizens and community members.  There should not be illegal aliens in USA, all foreginers should have Govt. mandated IDs (and USA citizens too).  These ID cards would be waterprooof and have RFID chips in them and include basic medical info for emrgency use).  The Fed Govt. needs to legalize basic drug use thru medical doctors and clincs.  The turth is . . . folks are self-medicating and need gudielines and trainning in when its appropriate to use street drugs.  You are not going to create 'paprdise' this way, though it does helop to control street drug use and its can be taxed and controlled.   Unlicensced Street Dealers are not friends of americans or Mexicans, etc., they are part of our joint social and economic 'problems'.

USAS may have to legalize drugs and all foreigners in USA as steps towards this problems solutions.  Al foeginers in USA should have to go through classes that bring them up to level of beening moral, healthy and useful american citizens.  The alternative is  a new open war on both countries streets.  We need to step up to the plate, so to speak, and start a joint national program in Mexico and USA to educate each citizen in how to act successfullly and correctly, in a modern social and economic community.  This would include avoluntary trainning and access to birth control means.  God is practical . . . and expects christians and others to use family and national order, as concurrent forces within the spiritual path?
I've spoken with members of the House and SEnate.   "Immigration isn't on the Radar" is their response to any related issue.   Maybe if a feww hundred school kids get slaughtered by Mexican Drug scumbags, they will finally move to take guns from the citizenry, because that will make a difference???!!!???
Put up 20 foot tall fences.  Enact draconian laws regarding natural herbs and plants. Fight to keep the dirivitives of such plants off the market.  Pump a few billion dollars into fighting an ill-advised, stupid "drug War" and this is exactly what you get. The profit motive, because of the ban will drive greed, corruption and violence, no matter what substance you chose to make illegal.  Children getting caught in the crossfire is not acceptable.
Wake up! STOP THIS CRAZY DRUG WAR!
It's not working and never will.
Build a freakin' wall. And arm it !!!
It is interesting that most articles omit to mention the cause of all these drug wars: the insatiable drug demand by US consumers, the largest drug consumer market in the world.
And some people wonder why we need to fortify our Mexican border.
Why are Mexican children crossing the border to attend school in the U.S.? That is just wrong!
We already have many of these type people in Odessa, Big Spring, Texas and Hobbs, N. M. The vast majority of drive-by shootings and drug pushers are Mexicans.  Why?  Because that is their idea of a way to live and complete lack on enforcement of immigration laws.  With the Democrats, it will only get worse.
Well, well.  Looks like the long corrupt Mexican government's cozy relationship with the drug lords is coming home to roost.  Let's finish that fence only make it solid from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico with no openings anywhere in it.
When you have a government as corrupt as Mexico, you will see these kind of problems and others. The border should be closed until Mexico cleans up their act. This should also be addressed in the United Nations. The US will be blamed because we are an easy target due to biased reporting of the media. We give Mexico money to help with their drug problems and it ends up in the pockets of corrupt officials. We can't afford this as well as dealing with illegal aliens. Legal immigrants also pay in hate crimes and prejudice. There should be an outcry against illegals by legal immigrants. Why doesn't the media ask legal immigrants how they feel? But I have a feeling that OIL is behind our government reluctance to enforce the laws against illegals from Mexico.
Apparently the governor of New Mexico is not aware or he sides with the drug cartel. He has recently said things are excellent along the border.
Overblown! Thursday/22nd. I went to the Fierro Dental
Clinic. Three blocks into Mexico. The streets were
busy with local people. The only thing lacking were the gringos. Articles in the U.S. newspapers are hurting local business.
For those who say "illegals" don't abuse the system, here's a prime example.  400 kids live in Mexico, but attend US schools. I wonder how much in taxes these people are paying for their kids to attend school. This is a prime example that something should be done about the "anchor babies".
I can't believe that Mexicans are even allowed to cross the border to go to school here. There is no truancy enforcement, what if kids are being abused at home, school officials cannot intervene. There is so much that we cannot do for those children that American children have to go through. What if a child gets hurt at school here at....the parents get to come over? I just don't get it.
These kids are Americans yet we can't protect them in their homes because there parents aren't American. What's wrong with this picture?
We have to wake up. The US GOV does not want to end the "DRUG" war. Many, many GOV officials need the drug problem for their livelyhood ie: DEA agents, prosecutors, private prisons etc...  Mark my words, there will never be an end to the drug war as long as people are making MONEY.
Recruit US citizen Spanish-speaking soldiers for the Army and Air Force. Train these troops in intelligence and law enforcement, including electronic signals intelligence. Assign these troops to reinforce and assist the Mexican government from our side of the border in finding and arresting criminals. Many of the drug criminals will have assets in the United States and all of them are smuggling drugs across the border. Mexico cannot win this war without the US helping to end the save haven across the border for these criminal gangs. Look for their money in US banks also and freeze their accounts. Gather evidence against them, find them, arrest them and convict them.
You people complaining about who's paying for these kids school rather than the fact that the kid's lives are in danger are the most selfish creeps imaginable. Shame on you!
Personally I dont't like the idea of children free-loading off of our educational system (I  am from San Diego where it is common) but to risk the lives of innocent children in any case is beyond acceptance. And it is inhuman to to stand by and only be concerned about our tax dollars while it is happening. First off, the parents of these children should not be risking their safety. Second, the danger of violence in this situation spilling over onto American soil is real and needs to be dealt with now before it escalates further. Maybe the marines should should have a few war games in the area.
When are we ever going to build a fence ALL the way from California to the Gulf of Mexico, and man our shores everywhere, so criminals can't enter our country? A partial fence is like having a bucket with 3 holes in it, and only plugging one! Wake up America!
The good news is that, now that the Iraqi military is
"winning the war" in Iraq, they (the Iraqis) now can
come to the U.S. and solve the problems of drugs and border violence. It's the least they can do, after 4,000+ Americans gave their lives (forget the trillions of $ pissed away) to destroy Saddam's nuclear arsenal or was it to remove the "threat" to our Middle East pals or was it to "free" the Iraqi people or, according to John McCain's own statement,  for the Iraqi oil that he wants to fight for over the next 100 years or - - just why the hell are we in Iraq??

And our congress wants to create the North American Union, wiping out the borders between Mexico, the United States, and Canada?
If we would turn back to GOD as an individual and as a nation then GOD would cure us of our drug use and from murdering our unborn and could heal our land.
Our country is falling apart. Mexican kids going to us schools? what a sham. We need to heavily arm the borders, heavy prison terms for those who enter illegally and legalize drugs...yes legalize it, tax it and sell it cheaper than any drug cartel can sell it for and you put an end to the gangs....just look at prohabition.... learn a lesson from it. I welcome all who come here legally, speak the american language and pay taxes...

Peace
Dean
I love how when the article talks about children possibly being injured or killed, selfish people comment about taxes.  It is obvious that these people have no human feelings.  It doesn't matter that we pay taxes for the American children to attend an American school. These kids may die.  Please think about the lives of those affected...and then your wallet.

Tony, NY (Sent Friday, May 23, 2008 9:36 AM)

Good damn question Tony !!!
I sure would like a answer to that !!!
I saw the piece on the evening news and all I saw was the Americans worried about these children, no Mexican officials in sight. This appears to be a bleeding heart liberal piece attempting to soften our stance on illegal immigration, however this issue isn't going away. As the weather gets hotter this summer, the issue will boil over just like it has for the last five years. Sensible Americans are fed up with this kind of garbage!
This should be no surprise to anyone. America has an illegal immigrant problem because no one wants to live in Mexico, they would rather come here and look for a handout because it is easier. The Mexican people have let their own country sink into a state of corruption, crime and emergency; how long before they do it to America?
Its hard for me to comprehend why so many people are complaining about where these chirldren are going to school. Have we lost sight of our compasion for the kids that are in the middle of a drug war, just because that happen to be from Mexico. I say protect the children, If it takes bringing all of them to the states.
I think it is kind of stupid to worry about who is paying the taxes for these kids to come in to the US to go to schools. I mean come on these kids are being killed and they are seeing all this violence going on. We are already paying taxes for the soldiers to go to Iraq and look where these has taken us. Now we are paying close to $4 a gallon for gas.
How are all of us to blame because some people in this country want drugs, yes some of those people are to blame a little, but how would we get more of the blame then the drug dealers and the people doing the actual killing? That's just an assanine statement Dave in San Antonio.
Keep them all where they belong !!
I am very confused as to why we hear all the time of how "secure" our country is now and yet billion of $ of drugs enter it daily.  Guess those kids school taxes are being paid by the same people paying them all over the US....the legal tax paying citizens of US.
The Drug War...another war we are not willing to win!!
wut does it matter who is paying for the kids who are U.S. born living in mexico and going to school here. who cares idoits, its a human life at stake. at least they are getting an education people.
Sad truth is, if the children were not involved, the media probably would not have given a rats a** about this story.  I mean they can give flying hoot about the other people who are in danger or have died, but throw in a child and OH MY GAWD its a monstrosity.
the only reason this is happening is beacause drugs are illegal....watch American Drug War.....if drugs were legalilized you would instantly put millions of black market drugs dealers out of work....including these mexican cartels
Columbus New Mexico is not the only border town with this problem - check out El Paso/Juarez, Laredo/Nueva Laredo, McAllen/Matamorao or Noales, AZ/Noales, Mx. I don't mind the druggies killing each other, but all too often innocent people are caught in the cross fire.  I do believe the current president of Mexico is serious about fighting the drug cartels which is a first.   As far as the children attending US schools, reread the story.  These are children that were born in the US but live with their families in Mexico.  Until the US changes their laws about being an American citizen just by being born here, this problem will continue.  Still, keep an open mind - education may be part of the answer for future generations. (And reading the various comments, it looks like a lot of us need more education - to at least learn to spell!!)
I have to say I have read all comments, and some of you make really good points.  It is very sad however how some of you question why kids from Mexico are allowed to come to school in the U.S.  Why would it matter??? Don’t we want all children regardless of where they're from to receive the best education possible???  Which then brings me to another thought, do you think is possible that some parents want them to come to school here in order to protect them from the violence that is happening in there???  I mean come on people why are you worried about who's paying for what, didn't you guys know that illegal immigrants also pay taxes, so is pretty safe to say that your taxes are not paying for this children's education.
Since this border war between cartels is not going away anytime soon, the US should fortify the entire Mexican border and lock it down. The illegality of the drugs is literally driving the market and its profits resulting in the cartels' power struggles. What you don't read in the media is that certain South American cartels are moving in to control the Mexican border. To understand why they are ruthless, you must understand their culture. There is a mandate to control the Mex/US border by any means necessary. By design, the US will drag its feet about this issue until it simply cannot ignore it any longer. What I want to know is: How the hell is McCain running for president when he cannot control the State of Arizona? The thought makes me shudder...
we should just elimante anyone who try to cross. they have done enough damage here already and as for drugs the popularity of drugs only continues to grow and will continue with the economy on the down fall...thanks to you oil companies! keep getting rich while america suffers
First, Stop the drug war for real, tax the products, use the taxes for recovery and rehab programs. If profits are minor compared to contraband, "drug War" stops. As for building fences, we spent too many years working to tear them down, do we want to do that again? And now to those who wish to punish children who are US Citizens, pull your head out. They are citizens of the nation regardless of place of nation of residence, they have the Right to Education. Do you really want them denied a basic right, so that IF they choose to come nortn for good, they are then subsected as illiterate? Think about it and if your not in the border states region, perhaps you should clean up the problems in your own areas instead of getting involved elsewhere first.
