Border officials fear growing Mexican drug war

Posted: Friday, May 23, 2008 8:07 AM

COLUMBUS, N.M. – Talking with officials in this high-desert town, it doesn't take long to understand just how concerned they are over the widespread violence south of the border, which they can't control.

From the American side of the U.S. Port of Entry in Columbus you can actually look down the streets of Palomas, Mexico – the town is that close. The problem is that Palomas, along with other Mexican cities, has fallen victim to a vicious turf war between rival Mexican drug cartels that has claimed about 4,000 lives since the start of last year. Among those assassinated are high-ranking Mexican police officials.

In tiny Palomas, some 40 people have died in drug shootouts so far this year. The residents live in fear of getting caught in the crossfire and spend much of their time indoors. Recently, all of the town's police officers resigned and the police chief sought political asylum in the United States, claiming his life was in danger. Victims shot up in Palomas are often brought to the border in the hope they'll be treated in American hospitals.

VIDEO: Border town violence presents dangers for school children

Watching all this from Columbus, Luna County Sheriff Raymond Cobos told us he is worried the Mexican drug war could spread. "My big concern, and the concern of most officials here, is that it's going to spill over into the United States, into this community," he said.

The mayor of Columbus, Eddie Espinoza, is also keeping a close eye on Palomas, which he used to frequent. Now he is more cautious and fears that, in retaliation for recent killings there, even more gunfire could erupt, perhaps on his side of the border.

"I believe it will get much worse than it is now," he said. "I think we haven't seen the boiling point. I think we're still waiting for that to come."

School children – a dangerous commute
Everyone is worried that something could happen to any of the 400 American-born children who live in Palomas but cross the border daily to go to school the United States in either Columbus or Deming, New Mexico. Early on weekday mornings they all walk to the U.S. border station, clear immigration, board yellow school buses and then head north to class. All of these children are American citizens, carrying with them either a U.S. passport or a birth certificate.

Not long ago, the grim possibilities in that scenario came into clear focus when shots rang out along the Mexican side of the border fence, just as children were getting off a bus to go home.

Sheriff Cobos was standing watch near the border crossing when it happened. "We had to take immediate steps to stop the children, turn that bus around, shut this highway down and try to coordinate with the Border Patrol to provide security for the immediate area here."

Now, whenever the buses load or unload, sheriff's deputies are assigned to keep an eye on the children. After a particularly violent weekend in Palomas, in which seven people were killed in two shootouts, heavily-armed federal officers were assigned to provide protection.

As for the children, many are fully aware of the violence breaking out near their homes. "At night we get scared 'cuz we hear all kinds of shooting," said one boy at the bus stop.  "They're killing people around us," added a girl as she walked back toward Palomas. "You can hear it when it happens."

With increased drug violence over the border in Palomas, Mexico, police from the Luna County Sheriff's office and New Mexico State Police stand guard while a young student goes back and forth to school.

School officials say attendance among these children, which normally is quite high, has fallen off since the violence escalated. At the Columbus elementary school, principal Hector Madrid has brought in counselors to help teachers address the children's fears. "They're exposed to this daily," he said. "They've come with feelings on their shoulders and we have to deal with it and work with them."

Meanwhile, Mexican President Felipe Calderon vows to defeat the traffickers and has deployed 24,000 troops to fight them. And in Congress a passionate debate rages over how much the United States should do to help.

Watching all this unfold from his vantage point, Cobos grows more concerned. "For us, it's a tragedy just waiting to happen. I want to do everything I can to eliminate that possibility."

Walls are not the answer.  Sound, REALISTIC policy and enforcement is.  Throughout history, walls errected by spocieties consistantly fail:  The Great Wall of China, Hadrian's Wall, and the Berlin Wall....all prime examples.  It doesn't matter how high, or long you build the wall, people will be able to circumvent them.
I agree with Tony in NY.  Why in the world are  Mexican children attending U.S. schools while still living in Mexico???????? And who's paying the school taxes for these familie's children to attend American schools???????? What the heck is going on here???????
Until our government develops a brain, this will continue. I fully support closed borders until this violence stops. All drug traffickers should be shot on sight. Any child born in the US from NON-US parents should become the citizen of the country of their parents.

This is NOT rocket science people, just plain ole common sense.
That make no sense welcome mexican kids to u.s. school for ??? We pay for that damn taxes for u.s. children to school not damn mexicans should go their own mexican damn school!!!! What a gusty world is all fuck about ???? Very stupid and greedy!!!!
If the truth was know, most politicians in the USA, are on drugs. There's no other logical reason for their irrational behavior. They don't have the guts to do the right thing for this country. They only care about their bank account and perpetuating themselves in power. It's all about Power, Money and Drugs. Not the country or the people.
It's true this kids should be attending Mexican schools & if they wanted to attend US schools; they should either pay taxes like the rest of us or a monthly tuition to cover their expenses.
put special forces down there and let them work with the mexicans, if that dosen't work bring in the big stuff and level anything within one mile of our border like isreal does
It is very sad to see the ignorance of people not wanting to see reality.  First of all the children going to school in the US are Armerican Born they have a right to be here.  Whether their families are living in Mexico or not and paying taxes or not.  I do not see American people complaining about the billions and billions of dollars that the undocumented or "Illegal" as some of you have put it.  Port towards taxes and they don't claim yearly taxes for a refund or stimulous tax returns......
Second of all, Yes it is the demand that is out on the street that cause this War on Drugs!  It is not just up to the Mexican government to stop it it is also up to the US government to stop it it goes in both directions and for those ignorant people.  This articul just happened to be about Palomas, Mexico and that is why it is focused on Mexico but all drug dealers are not Mexican...there are African American, Asian, etc....and drugs do cross into the US from other borders and ports of entry......
Rather than trying to be raciest and self centered the US needs to build a coalition with bordering Mexican cities and find racional, safe, and just ways of stopping these types of situations that put in jeapordy our children, and communities safety as well as Mexico cities.
Do you all realize how prejudice you sound? Would you be saying all of these racial slurs if these were black children or if they were from Canada? I am really offended by all of these ignorant remarks. I am a "American Born" Mexican as you want to call. Why can't these children have a decent educataion like everyone else? People don't realize how bad it really is in Mexico. Until you have been there or know someone who lives there, keep your mouth shut!!!!!
no we dont want all kids to get an education when it comes to me payiny for out of country kids..i need my tax money for gas at 4 bucks a gallon!!! keep them in mexico where they live!
I am concerned that no one looks past their noses any longer, we are so concerned about what is happening everywhere but here. Here is where I live, and here is what I am concerned about. When the US needs help, who is here? We seem to believe we can feed the world and make it all okay, we can not, there will always be poor, there will always be hungry, and there will always be guns, and drugs. The war is between those who want the drugs, and those who do not. As far as I am concerned, let them take their drugs, they will die off and hopefully stop breeding. We are over populated anyway. The illegals are not touching my job, but they do take away jobs from the American on the bottom. Let Mexico concern itself with it's own drug issue. We have enough rebuilding to do on our own lands. As far as the War is concerned, we can fight it here or there, I prefer there.
This is a big problem especially living in the south. I have read most of the posts here and a few I wonderwhat their point was.  Others I agree with, though all of our postulating will do nothing.  The people who suggest we do nothing and legalize drugs must be the parents whose kids walk all over them.  Those that say the problem resids with the good old USA are true.  We have not taken measures to curb drug abuse besides throwing people in jail so capitalism at work, where there is a demand there will be a supply.  The corruption and lack of job creation by the Mexican gov't also helps because making, selling and muling drugs is a job, and if you can't afford to feed your family that job begins to look not so bad. This is a social, political problem that like most ends up hurting those at the bottom. The people getting killed are not the drug lords but foot soldiers in their army, the victoms in the community collateral damage, and when is spreads into New Mexico those citizens who cannot afford to move away. Though as some have pointed out the most important thing in this articleis that their are children crossing the boarder to go to school in the US. Maybe if we educate them they can help to improve their situationswhen they get older, and well if we don't guess we can identify the next generation of drug dealers, smugglers, and producers.
The only way America can stop drug deals and illegal imigranst is dig a hughe canal between the U.S.A and Mexico and make prisoners dig it in a 10 year time so it will kill them and same money for prison cost or send them to mexico.
OK ENOUGH GET OUT  OF ALL ILLEGALS I WANT MY COUNTY BACK STOP GIVING TO THESE PEOPLE OUR GOVEMENT IS SO DUM IF I WAS GOVERMENT I WOULD LINE THEM UP AND SHOOT THEM
Legalize and tax drugs, end this violence ! Teach our children to stay away from drugs and let the addicts die...
If they are not living in the US, they are not paying for their kids education.  At least in CA, most school funding comes from property tax. Why do I care if we pay for their education?  US schools are failing, a big reason is the having to pay for ESL/bi-lingual education for non-citizens or anchor babies.
If we brought the troops home from Afghanistan and Iraq we would have the manpower to fortify our borders, the south and the north. A big wall won't do the trick. If American people can't get their drugs from one part of the border they will just go to another, Tijuana. If the Mexican President sends 24,000 troops to this one location how much good do you think it would actually do? The dealers and pushers would could just bribe them. Let them fight it out on that side but put the manpower on this side to make sure it doesn't spill over.
LEGALIZE DRUGS AND ALL THIS WILL GO AWAY. It is that simple. Legalize drugs, tax the hell out of it, and use the profits to help addicts and fight corruption. If you legalize drugs like alcohol, then you take the profit and the black market from the gangsters. But alas you have people that are more afraid of the drugs themselves and will live with this kind of violence just so drugs are illegal. We legalized alcohol because of these same reasons. Why not legalize drugs and take the violence out?
I think that the children attending the US schools is part of President Bush's "No Mexican Child Left Behind" program.
Hey The Answer is simple. Educate our kids to Stop Buying Drugs. Then The Cartels Are Out Of Business.

King James Bible: Mathew 7:3
"And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?"
It does matter where the kids go to school and who is paying for it. Not all immigrants pay taxs. I work in the field of social service and see daily US kids medical benifits get taken away from them and given to illegal immigrants these are US kids who's parents to do work for a living and thier companys do not give a health plan and they can not afford medical coverage. People who lost jobs due to the great trade acts in the US. Do you people understand the US is a service country now we don't make anything in this country anymore. Most in the US try to say it is due to the unions we are this way. Take UPS they are union and they pay employees a good rate and give a medical as well. This company and the Teamster union both understand they have to put a top rate into play if not there could be a down fall like we are seeing with the auto unions. Greed that has been the auto union for many years. You don't pay someone $48 dollors an hour to put a bumper on a car. There is a link to the use of drug rates going up in the US when jobs began to be ship over and people lost jobs in the US. Rep. and Dem. don't listen the US people anymore. I did vote for Bush and will be big enough to tell you I was wrong. I'm a Rep. but he has got to go. We can be a strong nation but we are weak because it is our own fault we are this way. Someone once stated The goverment should fear its people not the people to fear thier goverment. We need to understand why we were great at a time in War World II. We were not going to war we got pulled in when we were bomd because of oil. Other nations did not see that we could build what we need to win. Our men went to war and women and childern work at home to help support our goodness. it is sad when my 13 year old came home learning more about other nations and her own. She had no idea what this Nation did in that time. I new it was time to teacher her what kind of nation she did live in. I sent her to her great fahters for a summer who did figth in the war and she came back and she talk none stop for 2 months to people about how nation was and what it use to be like. She is 20 now and she gets very upset when someone down plays these things. She has the impression people in her age group do want to talk about these things but most have told her they don't even know about national history. Our fathers we founded this great nation it they could stand we from from the graves they would bless out most in this nation. Stand up people stop talking about the issue put some actions behind those big mouths. By the way I'm have three college degrees and still can not spell very good.
Easy fix. lock that part of the border down. Period. Kill anything the attmepts to cross it (both ways). Any Mexicans caught in town, toss on fence. Dead. That will get the message across. Children living in Mexico, and attending our schools? I hope that school district is not getting a dime of fed tax money. I don't want my tax dollars going there to support Mexicans. I hope we are billing the Mexican gov't for the cost of educating their students.
i think its sad how these children are suffering because of stupid goverment that dosent know how to solve problems in there own country that its starting to affect the US its sad to see that the mexican goverment is in on all these wars of drug traficing :( hopefully they can resolve something quick and stop the killings and hatedge
just wanted to say to all the people that care only about the taxes you should keep your mouths shut cause we are all gods people and should care for one another that is good that the offials are worried about the kids.all they want to do is get educated and become good people so they can have a better life.so just wanted to say to these poeple on here just wooried about your DAMN wallets shame on you all!but one thing i do agree on is that the government over there is really corrupt and the us does need to send some troops over there and start to take care of the drug cartels instead of sending troops over to iraq where there is no point in us being over there.thats what we get for electing such a stupid and no good president thats why we need democrats in the white house.then we can fix this country!
I hope the state of Mexico is flipping the bill for those kids education and transportation without any FED tax dollars. Look back to when alchol was illegal in the U.S.. The mobsters made all the money and violence was high. When it was legalized and taxed the majority of the problem went away. The GOV. can't totaly controll who grows natural plants that get us high. So, in order to profit off the natural plants the GOV made them illegal. Marijawana is not as bad as alchol physically, and doesn't kill mass people on our roads like drunk drivers do. Still it is illegal, and to legalize it would cost a lot of jobs in place to prevent its growth and use. The GOV doesn't care about us they only care about the money we generate. If they did care we wouldn't have so many people here starving, homeless, and uninsured. The GOV spends a lot of money on forign aid while vastly neglecting our own real problems. Medical marijawana has been voter approved in a few states and yet the FED GOV refuses to listen to we the people. So, in short the GOV outlawing natural drugs has created this war on drugs, and as long as the GOV profits off drugs being illegal it will continue. Unfortunantly Paul Ravier never had any forsight becouse if he did he would not have been saying "to arms the redcoats are comming". Instead he would have said "to arms the Federal Gov. is comming". I think it's time for the Gov to actually start listening to we the people and adhere to the issues we are voting on. If the Gov doesn't the people are going to eventualy revolt to prevent our Fed Gov from becoming a compleat dictatorship. (In case any Gov agency reads this... I'm not trying to incite violence or overthrow the GOV....just stating the obvious)
This is indeed a sad story.  The only thing sadder are some of the narrow minded comments on this board.  Initially I had planned to write a in-depth response to this article, but after reading all the comments, it's absolutely outrageous how some people respond to issues, when the bottom line is kids are dying for no reason.  It's always been the thinking of a certain section of Americans that if it's not me, than who cares. It's only a matter of time before conflicts like these in Columbus spill into other suburban communities all throughout the U.S.  It's happening as we speak.  Clearly the arts of diplomacy and open dialogue between governments has taken a back to seat to those who believe erecting a 20 foot wall solves all.  Interesting to think that if our borders were permantly shut down, how scary some of these thinkers can really be.
to ...Paul Brown, Houston , TEXAS

so we should also shoot the executives from alcohol and tobacco companys too ....oh wait there legal drugs and it just so happens the most deadliest

OPEN YOU EYES AND WATCH THIS FILM GO TO www.americandrugwar.com
This situation will continue as long as there is a "War on Drugs".  How often do you hear of people killing each other over alcohol?  It needs decriminalized and taxed, like alcohol.
imagine a world with no drugs, oh never mind you will find something else to blame mexicans for
Decriminalize narcotics and tax and regulate the hell out them.  We'll generate ridiculous amounts of public money instead of wasting it on a futile ideology and it will destroy the various drug cartel's source of income.
The major organizations will dissolve and there will cease to be this kind of violence on this scale regarding this topic ever again.

This problem needs a solution, not the kind of reactionary politics that have helped propagate this same issue for close to a century.

How is this any different from the kind of social catastrophe that Prohibition caused?

And no, I do not use or sell narcotics.
Rigo in Houston, how do you figure that illegal immigrants are paying taxes??? To pay taxes you have to be registered with the IRS and have a social security number. If you are an illegal immigrant, you don't have a social security number (or for that matter a damn green card)unless you stole someone's identity or SS number. How in the hell can you make the statement (and I have heard it before) that illegal immigrants pay taxes?????
Workforce 2000. We knew all about this in 1983. A study was released called, "Wo0rkforce 2000". A friggen government and business created this mess. Manipulation cooptation stratagy was used on the American people. Just like coorupted Mexicans, we too have coorupt government. Fix the source, fix the problem.
I live in the US. Can i take a bus to go to school in Canada? Just wondering.... or are their politicians sane?
I'm a ex U.S. paratrooper of the United States Army and I'm appalled at the idea of congress trying to create a North American union and wiping out our borders between Mexico and Canada. This is absolute insanity. I've faced death many times for my country. I do not want to see our country be called the United States of Mexamerica. I want United States of America. But to refer to myself as a North American and not to refer to myself as an American. I will not allow this to happen. As for the citizens of this great country we must not let this happen. The solution to this problem is these children were born in the United States therefore we must let the parents of these children in our country and be given green cards. We must also fortify our borders and if any of those drug cartel criminals cross our border we need to blast them into hell.
If you Americans didn't consume so much drugs maybe all of these problems would not exists in Mexico! Maybe we Mexicans should be blaming the gringos for all the violence in our country, don't you think?
Please finish ASAP the fence at Mexico-US border and start planing a fence along the Pacific and the Atlantic, we want to get rid of all the drug carriers because of you cant stop using industrial amounts of illegal drugs
For those who don't understand how children of Mexican nationals can be US-born:
Hospitals in the US are mandated by the Federal Government to treat anyone who walks in the door, including labor and delivery of newborns, regardless of nationality and ability to pay, whereas hospitals in Mexico typically require payment up front.  When a child is born on US soil it is guaranteed birthright citizenship by the Constitution of the USA, and thus guaranteed all the rights of a US citizen, including education, whether tax-paying or not.  Have you figured it out yet?  It's the LAW of this great land, folks!  If you don't like the way it sounds, get your representatives in Washington to change it....and good luck getting that done!
I would like to know why are Mexican children coming over to the U.S. for school? What's up with that?
I would like to know why Mexican children are coming to the US for schooling? What's up with that?
American born kids are still "American" regardless of where they live.  By virtue of birth they are afforded the same rights as any other "American".  There are many people here who don't contribute to taxes and infact live off the taxes of others. So should they also be shipped out? What we are talking about here is the greater responsibility of a nation and not an individual's bias/prejudice towards less fortunate.

Some speak of illegal immigrants and that there should be none in this country. I too think that the law should be upheld. However, the economical disaster that would ensue should all these illegal immigrants be deported would be far too great.  Who would work in your fields; likely not the same ones that want them all to leave?  If the economy is bad now imagine what the fall-out would be when the cost of agricultural production triples or more. The point here is that this is a necessary evil and what the government seeks to do is curtail it but I don't think they intend to eliminate it. Big picture.

As for the drugs it is no doubt and understatement to say deplorable and disgusting.  However, supply and demand.  Do you think Mexican drug dealers make much of their money from other Mexican's? They kill each other and everything in site to take control of the market here (the buyers). For the majority of drug production the final destination is here. Those committing these atrocities should receive harsh, swift retribution and taken off the streets but the problem has become such a cancer how do we truly remedy the situation in this lifetime? You chopp off the head of the snake and there are millions more waiting to take its place.

This is a great nation but such an esteemed status comes with various and numerous responsibilities and problems to contend with.
Kris In Fla, You have a sick way of looking at life! You must be one on the take here, I see your drug problem boiling. You want to cry over the grug issue, but have no regard for the lives of other instead. Your sick!
Mexico will not need an army to take control of land they claim belongs to them.  Mexicans are quickly being allowed to cross over the border, populate vast areas of the US, change the language from English to Spanish and mopdify area culture to suit them.  No army necessary.
I know a teacher in a Texas border town, she said 85% of her class comes over from Mexico (some of them don't even speak english). Apparently, the US has a "Turn no child away" policy. Which is one of the reasons I pay so much in taxes and can barely afford to put gas in my car!
The United States is the number one drug consumer in the world! Mexicans cartels are just fighting over the right to take drugs over the border so that you Americans can have your daily fix. Capiche?
In order to be an american citizen as a child one of your parents has to be an american citizen. These children aren't citizens just because they were born here. Their parent is paying taxes here so they have a right to attend school. Don't blame the children for getting a better education.
I am outraged that some idiots are asking who cares who pays for these kids to come to school here.  I do.  I do.  I work my a** off for my kid to go to Catholic School so that she is not slowed down by these non-English speaking kids.  If you are not here legally, then your kids are illegal.  Period.  We need to change the law and fast!!!!
Very well stated Lorrie in Fresno.  As for Pwwssr in Oakwood GA you need to read over what you type before you post anything, i understood what you meant to say, i didn't like it, but everyone has an opinion. As for why they attend schools in the U.S, maybe to have better opportunities, becuase in case some people do not realize this, mexican schools are more advanced than the U.S school system.  Really.
US Mom, uh....3 college degrees, eh? Uh...ok. With sentence structure and spelling like that I really wonder how you even passed a class or even wrote a term paper or thesis. I appreciate your sentiment and message but I would not go bragging about having 3 college degrees. It just doesn't add up.
P.M. Waters said that some of the contributors need to learn to spell. He mispelled Nogales.
What is happening in Palomas, Mexico is no different than whats happening in Los Angles, ca. the gangs MS 13, 18th street and other gangs too they run the areas that they have infested and undermine law and kill many people. When the police arrest some of them there's many more that step right up and replace them. Theres only one way to deal with them round them up and ship them back to Mexico. Certain people in the goverment wine and cry that theres just no way to ship them all back theres no resources. Well how about the way the Germans transported the jewish people to concentration camps by the millions even though it was wrong the point is there are resources the goverment continues to make weak and poor excuses. I live in a fairly safe area in northern California near San Francisco, but even this being the case I can see there is a big problem with the larger percentage of Mexicans that claim to only want jobs that whitey doesnt want to do!I'm white and I do work hard and do any type of work to make ends meet and I know of many others as myself! I see several Mexicans that work for money under the table (cash) and their wifes (not married in the united states) collect welfare not reporting that their husbands recieve money under the table! Also open your eyes and notice that a big percentage of Mexicans have larger newer gas guzzeling SUV,s not only that they spend $1,000s of dollars on bright polished aluminum wheels and the wifes drive them into the welfare offices to take care of their monthly welfare checks and medical benfits and a person that collects welfare is not suppost to own a car thats worth over I think 200.00 dollars! Also another point is there are many mexican families that buy homes, drive the gas guzzeling SUV,s and collect welfare work and deal drugs! So you tell me what we are to do with the majority that are doing illeagal things and breaking the law? Look on the web site Megans Law and see for yourselfs how many sex perverts and rapist are Mexicans compaired to other races! guess what about 80% of the sex perverts are Mexicans! and the news media their not even mentioning how many Mexicans are raping killing white woman! In the company I work in there are many lawers that are clients and constantly they have cases that involve Mexicans beating and raping and killing white woman. And most of the cases involve 2-3 Mexicans doing the assults. There are hundres of box cars on trains headed south to the boarder!
