Revivalist claims hundreds of healings

Posted: Thursday, May 29, 2008 8:36 AM

LAKELAND, Fla. – "Holy Spirit fall! God is here! We want more! More, more, more!"

That's what Canadian evangelist Todd Bentley yells out nearly every evening to the thousands who gather to hear him preach. The 32-year-old Bentley looks more like a biker than a minister, with body piercings and tattoos all over his arms and neck. But the crowds don't seem to mind how he looks. They just want what they believe Bentley has – the ability to heal them.

Todd Bentley at the Lakeland Convention Center in Lakeland, Fla. on May 21.

Bentley claims that God has used him to supernaturally heal hundreds of people of diseases ranging from glaucoma to diabetes to even cancer. How to explain it?

Bentley said in an interview that he doesn't know exactly why now, why him, why Lakeland, and he does not promise that everyone who comes to him will be healed. But he does maintain a pragmatic posture toward prayer.

"I say, you have nothing to lose but your sickness. If the doctors can't help you, why wouldn't you give God a chance?"

Growing crowds
"If you want God, just come get some," he shouts on stage nearly every night.

Bentley has repeated a version of this invitation daily since April 2 when he and his team from Fresh Fire Ministries, which he founded in 1997,  first arrived here from British Columbia, Canada, for what he thought would be five days of "revival" meetings in a local church. But those plans changed, he said, because "God is moving...and people know something is happening here." His meetings have been extended indefinitely.

While Bentley and Fresh Fire Ministries are not part of an organized Protestant denomination, his beliefs tend to follow Pentecostal, charismatic traditions.

He claims that God has used him repeatedly before this revival to heal the sick, but added that this series of revival meetings is unprecedented in his personal experience as a minister.

The meetings have outgrown four venues, including a local convention center that seats roughly 7,000. Now they meet under an air-conditioned tent that can accommodate 10,000 on the grounds of the local airport. Organizers estimate that more than 140,000 people from at least 40 nations have attended meetings here.

In this country, the self-billed "Florida outpouring" has generated mostly local media attention. But word of the revival has been generating plenty of buzz online, taking Bentley’s message and claims far beyond Florida.

So far, according to  Fresh Fire Ministries, 1.2 million people have watched live streaming broadcasts of the meetings on the Internet. The meetings also are carried on the religious satellite channel, God TV, which transmits Bentley's healing services to more than 200 nations. In this country, God TV is carried on DIRECTV.

Not everyone is comfortable with this expression of Christianity, including some Protestant theologians. R. Douglas Geivett, a professor at the conservative, evangelical Talbot School of Theology, is deeply skeptical of the "Florida outpouring" and does not believe Bentley’s claims of supernatural healing are consistent with Christian doctrine

"I don’t think it fits neatly into any branch of Christianity," said Geivett. "Mr. Bentley’s worldview appears to be a mixture of New Age notions, an obsession with the paranormal, and an untutored grasp of Christian theology."

A woman named Deborah, who suffers from scoliosis, prays with Todd Bentley in Lakeland, Fla. on May 5 as David Tomberlin looks on and Russ Roderick acts as a “catcher.” Afterwards, she claimed her illness was healed.

Claims of healing
Still, what seems to be drawing all these people of varying ages, ethnicities, and classes is a clear hunger for what Bentley's meetings are offering: the hope of healing and some sort of touch from God.

David Tomberlin, an evangelist who's been dubbed the "Ryan Seacrest" of these meetings because he serves as an emcee of sorts, tried to explain the claims of healings, saying, "The Bible talks about Jesus healing sick people. It says he was moved by compassion, so part of it is God's heart of compassion."

So every night, Bentley and his ministry team take to the stage and try to call heaven down to earth.

That's when the sick are urged to come forward for prayer and healing.

In many instances, Bentley places his hands on someone's head or area of infirmity and cries out for the power of God to descend. In response, some people may stand and physically tremble, while others may literally fall down to the ground in what they call "falling under the power" of the Holy Spirit.

Bentley’s associates say that this is not a painful experience, but rather one of being physically overcome by the loving presence of God. Anticipating these sorts of responses, one of Bentley's staff members stands behind each individual to serve as a "catcher" to gently guide the person down to the floor. Skeptics claim this "falling" can be the result of being overcome with emotion or a learned behavior.

At a recent meeting, Stephen Godula was brought on stage to tell his story. He testified that he had been healed of multiple forms of cancer by watching the meetings on the Internet at home. He plans to return to his oncologist in Philadelphia to document his healing.

Patsy Wallingford traveled from Arkansas in search of healing. Since a tractor-trailer plowed into her mobile home three years ago, Wallingford has been bound to a wheelchair because of nerve damage in her legs and feet.

On a recent night, Wallingford took to the stage and received a prayer from Bentley. "I felt like what was a warm water flow from the top of my head to the bottom of my feet," she explained.

And that's when, she said, she could feel something cold against her right foot; she decided to step out in faith and step out of her wheelchair in front of clapping and cheering crowds.

As she pushed her wheelchair off the stage, she paused to answer questions from one of Bentley's staff members, who filled out a one-page form detailing the claims of miraculous healing.

Bentley and his staff say they welcome as much documentation as people are willing to provide after they return home.

What about the money?
Bentley and his ministry do not charge an entry fee for his meetings. Each evening, four hours into the service, at close to 11 p.m., white plastic offering buckets are passed around.

They asked for money only once and strangely, on the night this reporter was there, they took their offering so late at night that the crowd had thinned-out. Bentley also receives donations directly through his Web site.

The ministry said that the average donation per person is $3-$5. While some people were reluctant to talk about what they gave, one visitor from Finland said he was only able to put in a few dollars because his travel costs were so high.

A spokeswoman for the revival, Lynne Breidenbach, said the offerings have covered their enormous operating costs. Before the move to the airport grounds, she said the ministry paid a daily rental fee of $15,000 for the local convention center, as well as comparable fees for use of a stadium. His spokesperson didn’t know how much the current setup costs. The offerings, said Breidenbach, have not contributed to a significant infusion of cash for Bentley or his ministry.

According to Breidenbach, Bentley "continues to draw his standard salary, set by his board, from his office in Canada. It is a modest salary and is in the five-figure range." The ministry said that their financial records are subject to an outside audit every year.

Bentley said he was willing to open Fresh Fire Ministries’ bookkeeping records for the Lakeland revival meetings, but has yet to provide the documentation to msnbc.com. He said that he welcomes media attention and scrutiny because the "outpouring" is a work of God and he has "nothing to hide."

Taking the notion of any potential criticism head on, he said, "I don’t have time to debate whether revival is happening or not. I don’t have time to nitpick the reasons why God might not be moving." Instead, he said, his greater concern is to move as fervently in faith to see as many people healed as he can during this time.

Miracles?
And indeed, Bentley’s claims have stirred up debates within and outside the church.

Erik Thoennes, also a professor from the Talbot School of Theology, offers a more accepting, though still cautious stance, than his colleague Geivett.

Thoennes believes many Christians today are open to the idea that God might move in miraculous ways, even if they don’t embrace movements like Bentley’s. And, he offered specific advice to non-Christians who may be confounded by such reports: "I’d hope they wouldn’t get distracted by movements that seem odd, or by how goofy Christians can be, so that they miss seeing Jesus as the most beautiful, good, loving, just, true, person there is."

The harshest critics won't come from non-believers but from the traditional church. They will comment vigorously on things they have not witnessed. I actually watched a couple of serives on the net and theses people were not freaked out.

But it is always going to be culture and strangeness that will drive the criticism. The whole of christianity was birthed at Pentecost.
Regarding Mr. Geivett's comments about not " fitting neatly into any branch of Christianity " he's right because God does not fit neatly. The Church over the centuries has tried to position God. God is all powerful and loves everyone of us. Stand back and let Him be God. What's happening in Lakeland and the world with this outpouring is real and mighty. David
This is the kind of belief that let that poor 12 year old girl die from a treatable ailment while her parents prayed for her. Shame on MSNBC for even entertaining the idea that this junk is somehow new and possible real. The article even says he has cured diabetes and cancer. When those individuals "cured" die because they discontinued treatment, Bentley should be put in prison.
I've been watching on God Channel for about 2 weeks.  Being a Brit, it all seemed a bit OTT for me!!  However, I have no doubt now that God is doing something amazing through Todd.  I'd like to be there but committments & costs are aginst me.  God Bless
I think you need to do more follow up.  This report seemed to be based mostly on opinion rather than fact. I understand your scepticism but fail to see where you really went after the truth by seeking out those that were touched by God and have a story of their own to tell.  I'll be checking back to your web site for more extensive reporting.
These mind control cults have spread their lies and deceit around this globe for far too long.  It is time humankind moves beyond the need for all of this silly (and dangerous), superstitious mumbo jumbo.  These people are sick and in need of help.  They are in the clutches of a mind control cult.

Jesus is nothing more than a character in a fairy tale.

Remember, "god" is nothing more than a nonsense word created by man to explain away all of the things we can't yet understand.

Religion is a disease of the mind, born of fear, which has done nothing but bring untold misery down upon the human race.
Please.. give me a break!

It's no wonder the world is so messed up. Maybe he should put his own hand on his forehead and heal his brain. Or, better yet, why doesn't he try his "powers" on someone with Cerebral Palsy or an amputated limb?

A well done article. I received healing by watching
God.TV after 3 weeks. One must experience God's Love
before judging how God works.
My compliments to the reporter and MSNBC on the way they conveyed this report.  I would have to reluctantly agree with the minister, if modern medicine has not provided a cure, maybe Christ can.  There’s nothing to loose only the possibility of gain.
I have a brother-in-law who has cancer and has gone
though two rounds of CHEMO.  I have sent the article
to him/.
When he can have an amputee grow a new limb I will believe he can perform miracles.
"I don’t think it fits neatly into any branch of Christianity," said Geivett. "Mr. Bentley’s worldview appears to be a mixture of New Age notions, an obsession with the paranormal, and an untutored grasp of Christian theology."
Geivett needs to read his Bible. It specifically says that we will do the works of Jesus and "greater".  Healing most certainly falls under that umbrella.
Thank you for your fair reporting on this event.  The article is accurately reported without too much cynicism.  As a serious follower of Jesus who has healed me more times then I can remember I intend to attend the meetings at some point in June just to spend time in the presence of God.
Read Johanna Michelson's book "The Beautiful Side of Evil".

I laugh at the way God seems to be using a tatooed "weirdo" to bring healing to so many. Too long we have had "nice" looking preachers, but with not much happening in the miracle department (only with a few exceptions). I would rather have healing over hairdo's, hope rather than hype. If the critics can show me their empty wheelchairs, x-rays and doctor's reports of verified healings, then I will listen to what they have to say. Until then, give me that Harley riding, tatooed t-shirt and shorts wearing Canadian weirdo.
As a wise and learned theologian, it might behoove Mr. R. Douglas Geivett to take a little trip to Lakeland to gather more data for himself firsthand.
I can't believe in this day and age that people are still falling for BS like this and being fleeced.
Been there! It's real!!! People who are predisposed to reject it, will... Others who are desperate will press in and receive.
thank-you for covering the revival in lakeland and giving a fair review.  some things can only be experienced and are not to be understood with intellect.  I am so thankful that Todd is not too proud to say he does not know the whys...he just knows the WHO.... thank-you for the coverage!!!
Well, if he follows a "christian life" even though he is not perfect, God who is perfect, says that Jesus can heal others by using humans to do so. I dont think that Jesus would let a person who is not trying to be righteous do this. However, on the other hand God says in the last days that Satan would be allowed to let people who follow Satan do these things also. We just have to examine the lives of who do these healings for Christ to see who is at work here.
Jesus always said...Your FAITH has made you whole....If you have FAITH...so it ain't Bentley or anyone else.  No results? Check out your FAITH. Christ would probably treat the organized CHURCHES today as He did when HE walked the earth.
good!
Christians are the absolute dumbest people on the planet.
God is moving mightily in this country. There are still a lot of God fearing people here who are proud of this great nation and want God to continue blessing us. Over the past 30 years or so, many "free thinkers" have tried to push God out of this country. This country was founded by those who wanted freedom to worship God, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. If were are to become a great nation that our forefathers wanted we must yield to God. Remember what 2 Chronicles 7:14 tells us; If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. We need to not question this move of God but embrace it.
I would not get academic about something God is busy doing and totally respect Rick's views as apposed to some theolodical explanation. Rick Joiner have some excellent perspective on what is happening in Lakeland Florida, see http://www.morningstarministries.org/Publisher/article.aspx?id=1000031549 and http://www.morningstarministries.org/Publisher/article.aspx?id=1000031456 .
I have only seen a couple of Todd's meetings on the internet recently, and I've had to be open-minded, but am now addicted! You've got to see it to believe it, it's incredible.
Jesus instructed his disciples to "go and preach the gospel and heal the sick" was He joking? was He lying? and, by the way, are there any "Theology professors" preaching and healing? Like modern pharasees they can only observe and comment!
I went to Lakeland and witnessed this personally.  This is really a move of God.  An authentic move of God. Jesus Healed during his earthly ministry.  And He promised his disciples that they would also have the same ability to heal.  Go Todd!!!
I believe that being "healed by the Holy Spirit" does happen. It is a great feeling, almost like you are getting a tight, harm hug. Its all about the Lords love.  I once stood in the back of church, thinking to myself "What are these people thinking" I thought thay were pretending to feel these things. At that moment the preacher called my husband and I to the front and asked if I was ready to have my baby (I was 9 months pregnant and not having any kind of pains) I had told him I was but it still was not time. He just smiled at me and touched my head. I buckeled to my knees because my son kicked me right in the ribs as soon as he touched me. He told me I needed to go to the hospital because there was something wrong. I arrived to the hospital and the doctor told me to "Thank God" because if I had waited a day more to go in I would have lost my son. The lord does work in misterious ways.
Thanks for covering this awesome event.  I am so excited to see the moving of God on a secular news media.
I don't believe mine is the first comment.  Why aren't you posting them?  This is very real and you can feel the power coming right through the internet watching it online.  Jesus is the same yesterday, today and FOREVER... Believe it and be healed!!!
These many, many healings, and the Doctor's confirmations already provided, are completely consistent with those I have personally witnessed,  and participated in – as a praying Christian Layman. Jesus has never stopped healing people who seek Him!  I have heard the Doctor's words: “I don't understand why the X-Rays are different.  But there is no reason to operate on you.”  The medical record may list a “Spontaneous Remission” of cancer, but so many of these follow prayer!  Paralysis may be “All in the Head” of an individual, but no Psychologist offers to instantly cure the problem and allow that person to jump out of his wheelchair and Run!  Are you sick? Go get some (healing)!
I would like to see MSNBC investigate the authenticity of these healing claims.  At least, we as viewers can decide if such stories are news worthy.
Yes, Jesus is the most beautiful, good, loving, just, true, person there is.  He is also much more.  He is a God of power and healing.  Praise God that there are those who know this without a doubt and are used for this purpose.
People thought Jesus was crazy too - the Bible says all it takes is the faith of a mustard seed and mountains can be moved - looks like he's got faith.
After attending 10 times over the past 50 days I can say that this is a REAL move of God. At the end of the day Jesus is getting all the Glory as He pours out His POWER to save, heal and set people FREE.  For way too long the church has been good at just talking - Now it's action time.  This outpouring will only grow larger and spread with greater intensity all over the World.  We are witnessing the beginning of the greatest harvest of souls in the Kingdom in these last days.  So if you don't like it....no problem... get over it, for it is here to stay.
Yes, Jesus is the most beautiful, good, loving, just, true, person there is.  He is also much more.  He is a God of power and healing.  Praise God that there are those who know this without a doubt and are used for this purpose.

I think this is so awesome, I recently attended this revival and witnessed first hand people getting out of wheel chairs, one women in particular had been at the meetings for seventeen straight nights, with different people, including myself praying for her and trying to help her out of the chair in order to receive her healing and walk, she finally was able too.

I was back home watching on god.tv when she went up to the platform with assistance and got up and walked.

I've been a Believer since 1982 and have witnessed and awful lot, but never at this magnitude.

I believe if God can use a donkey to rebuke Balaam, He can use Todd Bentley.

Praise God and may this revival spread like a prairie fire.
Thank you MSNBC for posting this article. I visited Lakeland a month ago and was impacted by the power and presence of God. My back was healed watching online before I went, and a young man in our group was healed of asthma.  One thing I would change about the wording of your article is that we don't believe Todd in himself has the ability to heal us but that Jesus is using Todd and in many cases the Holy Spirit is healing people in the meetings totally apart from Todd or anyone else praying for them. If you or someone you know needs healing, like Todd says, give God a chance!!
We must not limit God or put Him in a box.  He moves as He pleases and it is not our job to question the methods which He employs to work through His people.  In fact, our one desire should be to get out of God's way and give Him free reign in our lives.  Afterall, God is a rewarder who diligently seek Him.
I am so happy to see this in the news.  I've been watching the revival and praying for healing right along with them. I am a Bible-believing Christian and am thrilled to see Christians that aren't afraid to show their beliefs in public. God is fulfilling everything he promised!  If you are a skeptic, read your Bible.  Everything they are doing is in there!  God says to be weary of false prophets, but he also said to test them, so do that, find in your Bible where Todd is doing anything against God's word.  I'm praying for the people with their eyes blinded.  You better look around before it's too late!!  YOU GO JESUS!!
The world is really funny.  You can paint yourself in your sports teams colors and act like a wild man yet if it has to do with the God of all creation you scoff!  Check out the doctors reports of the people that are really being healed.  Not just the ones in Lakeland but all over the world.  Read Acts 5:38-39:  "And now I say to you, keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing; but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it—lest you even be found to fight against God.”
The people can argue about the revival; that it is not, etc , then they don't really know the Bible, even if they claim  to be Tehologians, because in the Book of acts it is exactly what happened trough the apostles ministry.
Ask the people who has been healed, they would say like the blind man in the gospels said about  Jesus:" If it is a Prophet i don't know, i just know i was blind and now i can see !". i firmly be lieve in the move of God among his people who is willing to  seek him as the  source of healing, joy and restoration, He is always Open and willing for those who seek HIM.
The bible says. In the last days I will pour our my spirit upon all flesh. Your sons and your daughters shall prophecy, Your old men shall dream dreams.  Your young men shall see visions, and upon my servants and my handmaidens in that day, will I pour out of my spirit.
And another verse in Psalms says, By his stripes we were healed. this written a long time before Jesus came, was whipped with the cat of nine tails, leaving stripes upon his back, and crucified, and rose from the dead. The true mercy and love of Christ is at last being preached and demonstrated.
Christ has broken free from the trappings, and bindings of organized religion.
A religion that Jesus  said was like tinkling brass and sounding cymbals. Otherwise, dead.
We are seeing this!  And it is not your cookie cutter preachers anymore. It is the real people who make up society. Waitresses, nannies, bikers, rednecks, cowboys, cowgirls, Goths, punks, you name it.  They who the organized churches have shunned, are being used by God.
Otherwise anyone who shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved, and God is using them.
These are the servants and handmaidens of the Lord when they  allow God’s spirit to flow through them.

Todd Bentley,
My wallet is bleeding because of the high gas prices and associated inflation. My eyes hurt too, every time I look at my bank account balance. Could you heal these for me? I would appreciate it greatly. Maybe you could pray for some more dead dinosaurs (that are not mentioned in the Bible), so that we could have more oil. It might just work! If Allah can make all the oil he did for the Arab states, certainly Jesus should be able to whip up a little for us over here, right? Thanks!
In the Bible stories, people were healed by their faith;"let it be done according to your faith."
Theology has nothing to do with it.Simple faith did.
If you have the faith "of a mustard seed"..it will move mountains.
Todd's ministry has people who have pain and suffering and often no hope.. a chance for their faith to rise up, and with prayer of others it is strengthened and the power of God meets them there with a healing or miracle.God loves us!
Todd cannot do this, only God.
Ministers and theologians  who actually read their Bibles need to be reminded of this.
Jesus went about healing all people.
When you ask Jesus into your heart it is an act of faith;that same Jesus will move on your faith when you step out towards your miracle.

To all the theologians out there.."without hope the people perish."The word of God states this.
Remember..the Pharisees didn't recognize Jesus as the vessel they thought God would use either.
I have had a healing miracle years ago, and it took faith, not theology. My eyes and heart were focused on Jesus at the time and His love for me...not on the minister.
The Bible also says"you will know them by their fruit!"
Looks to me like the Lakeland outpouring is bearing good fruit.
I wonder if the "theologians" and doubters would think the same and speak the same if they were at death's door, or told their condition was imposssible and there was no hope?
I have been watching the revival every since it started about 60 days ago.  It is totally captivating and awesome to see God move, using Todd Bentley, healing and reviving people from the dead.  Thank you MSNBC for doing this story.  The movement is spreading throughout the world.  Others come to the revival, receive the power to heal and resurrect people from the dead and they take that power home to where they live.  Praise God!!!!
what does Mr. Geivett mean when it doesn't fit into any branch of christianity....does it have to if it fits into the word of God....In Matt 10:7-8 Jesus speaks this to his disciples (which as christians we are all called to be not just Todd Bentley) "As you go, preach this message: The Kingdom of Heaven is near. Heal the Sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprousy (a miracle then), drive out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.....this is Christian doctrine and Jesus' ministry was filled with doing these things and has called us as believers to do them as well..
I went a few weeks ago. It was a great experiance. I really enjoyed it. It was not about money, but seeking God. I was amazed at the hunger of many Christians and how all that i spoke with said they were so refreshed afterwards. I may fly down again.
