Revivalist claims hundreds of healings

Posted: Thursday, May 29, 2008 8:36 AM

LAKELAND, Fla. – "Holy Spirit fall! God is here! We want more! More, more, more!"

That's what Canadian evangelist Todd Bentley yells out nearly every evening to the thousands who gather to hear him preach. The 32-year-old Bentley looks more like a biker than a minister, with body piercings and tattoos all over his arms and neck. But the crowds don't seem to mind how he looks. They just want what they believe Bentley has – the ability to heal them.

Todd Bentley at the Lakeland Convention Center in Lakeland, Fla. on May 21.

Bentley claims that God has used him to supernaturally heal hundreds of people of diseases ranging from glaucoma to diabetes to even cancer. How to explain it?

Bentley said in an interview that he doesn't know exactly why now, why him, why Lakeland, and he does not promise that everyone who comes to him will be healed. But he does maintain a pragmatic posture toward prayer.

"I say, you have nothing to lose but your sickness. If the doctors can't help you, why wouldn't you give God a chance?"

Growing crowds
"If you want God, just come get some," he shouts on stage nearly every night.

Bentley has repeated a version of this invitation daily since April 2 when he and his team from Fresh Fire Ministries, which he founded in 1997,  first arrived here from British Columbia, Canada, for what he thought would be five days of "revival" meetings in a local church. But those plans changed, he said, because "God is moving...and people know something is happening here." His meetings have been extended indefinitely.

While Bentley and Fresh Fire Ministries are not part of an organized Protestant denomination, his beliefs tend to follow Pentecostal, charismatic traditions.

He claims that God has used him repeatedly before this revival to heal the sick, but added that this series of revival meetings is unprecedented in his personal experience as a minister.

The meetings have outgrown four venues, including a local convention center that seats roughly 7,000. Now they meet under an air-conditioned tent that can accommodate 10,000 on the grounds of the local airport. Organizers estimate that more than 140,000 people from at least 40 nations have attended meetings here.

In this country, the self-billed "Florida outpouring" has generated mostly local media attention. But word of the revival has been generating plenty of buzz online, taking Bentley’s message and claims far beyond Florida.

So far, according to  Fresh Fire Ministries, 1.2 million people have watched live streaming broadcasts of the meetings on the Internet. The meetings also are carried on the religious satellite channel, God TV, which transmits Bentley's healing services to more than 200 nations. In this country, God TV is carried on DIRECTV.

Not everyone is comfortable with this expression of Christianity, including some Protestant theologians. R. Douglas Geivett, a professor at the conservative, evangelical Talbot School of Theology, is deeply skeptical of the "Florida outpouring" and does not believe Bentley’s claims of supernatural healing are consistent with Christian doctrine

"I don’t think it fits neatly into any branch of Christianity," said Geivett. "Mr. Bentley’s worldview appears to be a mixture of New Age notions, an obsession with the paranormal, and an untutored grasp of Christian theology."

A woman named Deborah, who suffers from scoliosis, prays with Todd Bentley in Lakeland, Fla. on May 5 as David Tomberlin looks on and Russ Roderick acts as a “catcher.” Afterwards, she claimed her illness was healed.

Claims of healing
Still, what seems to be drawing all these people of varying ages, ethnicities, and classes is a clear hunger for what Bentley's meetings are offering: the hope of healing and some sort of touch from God.

David Tomberlin, an evangelist who's been dubbed the "Ryan Seacrest" of these meetings because he serves as an emcee of sorts, tried to explain the claims of healings, saying, "The Bible talks about Jesus healing sick people. It says he was moved by compassion, so part of it is God's heart of compassion."

So every night, Bentley and his ministry team take to the stage and try to call heaven down to earth.

That's when the sick are urged to come forward for prayer and healing.

In many instances, Bentley places his hands on someone's head or area of infirmity and cries out for the power of God to descend. In response, some people may stand and physically tremble, while others may literally fall down to the ground in what they call "falling under the power" of the Holy Spirit.

Bentley’s associates say that this is not a painful experience, but rather one of being physically overcome by the loving presence of God. Anticipating these sorts of responses, one of Bentley's staff members stands behind each individual to serve as a "catcher" to gently guide the person down to the floor. Skeptics claim this "falling" can be the result of being overcome with emotion or a learned behavior.

At a recent meeting, Stephen Godula was brought on stage to tell his story. He testified that he had been healed of multiple forms of cancer by watching the meetings on the Internet at home. He plans to return to his oncologist in Philadelphia to document his healing.

Patsy Wallingford traveled from Arkansas in search of healing. Since a tractor-trailer plowed into her mobile home three years ago, Wallingford has been bound to a wheelchair because of nerve damage in her legs and feet.

On a recent night, Wallingford took to the stage and received a prayer from Bentley. "I felt like what was a warm water flow from the top of my head to the bottom of my feet," she explained.

And that's when, she said, she could feel something cold against her right foot; she decided to step out in faith and step out of her wheelchair in front of clapping and cheering crowds.

As she pushed her wheelchair off the stage, she paused to answer questions from one of Bentley's staff members, who filled out a one-page form detailing the claims of miraculous healing.

Bentley and his staff say they welcome as much documentation as people are willing to provide after they return home.

What about the money?
Bentley and his ministry do not charge an entry fee for his meetings. Each evening, four hours into the service, at close to 11 p.m., white plastic offering buckets are passed around.

They asked for money only once and strangely, on the night this reporter was there, they took their offering so late at night that the crowd had thinned-out. Bentley also receives donations directly through his Web site.

The ministry said that the average donation per person is $3-$5. While some people were reluctant to talk about what they gave, one visitor from Finland said he was only able to put in a few dollars because his travel costs were so high.

A spokeswoman for the revival, Lynne Breidenbach, said the offerings have covered their enormous operating costs. Before the move to the airport grounds, she said the ministry paid a daily rental fee of $15,000 for the local convention center, as well as comparable fees for use of a stadium. His spokesperson didn’t know how much the current setup costs. The offerings, said Breidenbach, have not contributed to a significant infusion of cash for Bentley or his ministry.

According to Breidenbach, Bentley "continues to draw his standard salary, set by his board, from his office in Canada. It is a modest salary and is in the five-figure range." The ministry said that their financial records are subject to an outside audit every year.

Bentley said he was willing to open Fresh Fire Ministries’ bookkeeping records for the Lakeland revival meetings, but has yet to provide the documentation to msnbc.com. He said that he welcomes media attention and scrutiny because the "outpouring" is a work of God and he has "nothing to hide."

Taking the notion of any potential criticism head on, he said, "I don’t have time to debate whether revival is happening or not. I don’t have time to nitpick the reasons why God might not be moving." Instead, he said, his greater concern is to move as fervently in faith to see as many people healed as he can during this time.

Miracles?
And indeed, Bentley’s claims have stirred up debates within and outside the church.

Erik Thoennes, also a professor from the Talbot School of Theology, offers a more accepting, though still cautious stance, than his colleague Geivett.

Thoennes believes many Christians today are open to the idea that God might move in miraculous ways, even if they don’t embrace movements like Bentley’s. And, he offered specific advice to non-Christians who may be confounded by such reports: "I’d hope they wouldn’t get distracted by movements that seem odd, or by how goofy Christians can be, so that they miss seeing Jesus as the most beautiful, good, loving, just, true, person there is."

What a shame you picked a theologian who is probably a dispensationalist to comment on the authenticity of the Florida Outpouring. If he is, He probably doesn't believe in that expression of Christianity so of course he cast doubt on it.

At least produce a number of different opinions from across the theological spectrum.

For those of us who have been there, yes its unusual, yes its different and yes for the unfamiliar it can be strange and perhaps at times uncomfortable. But then so was the message and actions that Christ brought to humankind.

The proof will not be in some theologians limited experience and opinion but in the if not thosands  who are walking around healed and restored, giving praise and thanks to the Jesus Christ for his love and mercy.

"One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see". Jn 9:25

I was there from the 18 to the 22 and it is real
i was healed after 4 years of pain in my chest.

so yeah its real and if you don't believe it
                         GO And Get Some!
What a bunch of Crap!!! Marx was right, it is the opiate of the masses. I just returned from Europe no wonder they think America is back in the Puritan stage of religious intolerance!!!!!!
Thank you for sharing this artical. it has given me hope that miracles can and do happen. I believe that Everyone on the planet has some kind of belife inside them that would accept any kind of help or hope of a miracle. We can all think of someone that needs something more than what their getting out of this life. And just maybe a trip to the lakeland revival could change their life for the good, forever.
I glad to see you are begining to cover this GOOD NEWS
Thanks for printing this article.  According to scripture more of this is to come all over the world!!! JESUS is alive and desire to heal and save all....
I pastor a small church in Hinesivlle, GA - I was compelled to go the Lakeland last week and "get some."  I personally was overcome by the presence of the Lord in that place.  Only God knows how many actual healings have happened there, but one thing for sure - the faith of His people has been stirred up and is encouraging people to believe God for what His Word promises is ours for the taking.  As far as Todd not fitting the religeous sector's opinion of how a minister of the gosple should look - God used a donkey to get His point across - what better person to use than Todd - God uses whosoever will to touch His people.  I am going back tomorrow to receive whatever the Lord will allow.  It is life changing to those who are open and willing for the Lord to touch them.
I heard about the Florida Outpouring and decided to check it out on Direct TV, which carries the GodTv channel. Check it out I did. I was glued to the TV for four hours on Sunday, May 4th amazed at the presence of the Lord through the Television and the miracles and healings that were taking place. Samething the next night, and for the remainder of the week. I decided That I needed to check it out in person so I went down to Florida that weekend (May 9-11) Wow! My first meeting was on Saturday night, May 10th in an open field at the local airport. All I can say is like it was a continuing chapter from the book of Acts. Signs, wonders and miracles and an awesome presence of the Holy Spirit. I actually had an opportunity to interview Todd Bentley and found him to be as real as they come. A man of God filled with the Holy Spirit. The weekend down in Lakeland has revised and refreshed me like no other time in my walk with the Lord. I recommend it to anyone who is hungry for righteousness...You will be filled.
Thank you MSNBC for this article. I'm one of the thousands that had to go see for myself what this was all about and I'm glad I did. The most notible thing in these meetings is the presence of God and that's what it is really all about. Todd is a very humble, sincere man of God and I'm glad to see the Lord moving through him in such a mighty way. He's helped knock off more than one pair of "religious" glasses so that we can see God will use any willing vessel whether they have tatooes or a three piece suit.
Check it out for your self. It's on God Tv every evening 8pm Eastern channel 395 on Direct Tv.

The last link is live and recorded streaming of the 7pm and the 10am live meetings eastern standard time.

Paul
Sheep.  I see nothing but sheep.  Wake up and think for yourselves people.  Sheesh...
All I can say is that no one is accountable for other peoples actions or decisions. Everyone is accountable for His/Her own actions, meaning that we as individuals must always check our spirit and make sure it is in line with the Holy Spirit of God. Without the leading of the Holy Spirit, people will be misled or perish. I am not talking about Todd Bentley, but I am talking about everyone who is in a Church Leadership position.

The Lord tells us that we must always compare what is happening to the Word of God. We must not be misled or fooled. "Greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world."  We cannot limit God, for He is God.

Isaiah 55:8-9 says, "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the Lord. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts."
No one ever went broke unestimating the intelligence of christians. This fraud is a Canadian Elmer Gantry.
Thank you MSNBC for covering the revival in Lakeland. God is powerfully changing "religion" in this country. God just wants us to seek his son's face, JESUS! Todd is just a man being used by God. He is teaching and equipping all believers in one accord regardless of religion to earnestly seek the Lord. I pray Todd continues to be obedient. We all need to listen and pray for God to continue to move. May it spread throughout the world!
this is god working thru him. not todd working thru god. the bible refers to the non-believers as the naysayers or ye of little faith. we are living in days as no other. it is time to get right with god while you are on this side of the grave. come judgement day we will all know his glory and power.
DON'T YOU PEOPLE READ YOUR BIBLES?!

Seriously, this is ridiculous. Yes, God is all-powerful, Jesus is amazing, and I am a radical Servant of God. BUT, I must point out false doctrines, and this is one of them! The Bible make it VERY clear that the apostles were able to heal and do miracles, they were able to pass that gift on to someone else ONCE, and after that, that gift died out. The power to perform miracles was to prove that Jesus was the messiah and was for the Jews, to help them believe...But after that, we had the Word of God to give us faith.

And is this guy even preaching the right doctrine? How is his life? A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot product good fruit. Is he following the formula in the Bible for making disciples? Is he even making Disciples? Is he teaching people to obey the Word?

For God's sake, it's no wonder people hate christians so much! Ninety-nine percent of "christians" (who are not actually christians at all according to the Bible) are still lost, with a different label. This is infuriating, it makes me sick.

The Bible says that the servants of Satan masquarade as angels of light, that wolves will come in sheeps clothing, and that false teachers will abound.

Sure, prayer is powerful. The prayer of a RIGHTEOUS MAN is powerful and effective.

C'mon, you wanna call yourself a christian? Study your Bible a bit, then. You'll see the truth.
All I know of this is what I just read.  I am a graduate of a Christian college, and have studied the bible for decades.  If this report is accurate, there is nothing un-biblical about healing.  God can do what He wants to do, and He can use anyone He wants to use as long as they are willing to be used.

"Faith healers" are nothing new, and I have read a lot about them over the years.  Some are charlitains, no doubt, but that doesn't change the fact that miracles do happen.

I was a little disappointed to read the last line in the report where the teacher refered to Jesus as a "person".  That is a very poor description for God in the flesh.
God is using Todd Bentley and his team. I was healed of fibromyalgia about 5 weeks ago at a morning service at Lakeland, when Todd was not present. A little lady named "Jessica" gave the message and prayed for me. I stopped all my meds (which were destroying my kidneys and liver) and have been pain free since. Glory to God! Jesus is the same today. Open your minds and hearts, all you sceptics! The Bible says that one day "every knee will bow and every tongue confess, that Jesus Christ is Lord!"

I have just one question.  Why is that tolerance is only tolerant up until the point that it crosses pathes with one's belief in God? It seems the entire world is tolerant of every crazy notion of mankind, except for its belief in God. Not that I truly care, because I know what I believe. God moves in His time and in His way. His ways are far above and beyond our understanding.
We are watching nightly in Australia on satellite TV. What is happening is just awesome!
great article! it's great to see the media scoping out the great move of God so that those on the outside and skeptics can hear from an unbiased opinion.

if people will just taste, just try and see what Jesus is  like, just try and get to know Him...then you will see. because if you look for Him, you'll find  Him. :)
It's the placebo effect, that's all. We already know that "sugar" pills often effect a cure. As long as we believe it will cure or help us, it very will might. The human brain has the power to heal the body. If you believe something will work, then it just might.  If you don't believe something will work, then it probably won't. The more favorable publicity this guy gets, the more credible he becomes, which leads to additional healing successes.  I have no complaints at all about curing gullible people.  I only wish I were more gullible about certain things.
Fly from Tanzania to attend.  What the article didn't mention is that most of the miracles and healings are happening just being in the atmosphere of the building.  Majority of times, Todd's not laying hands on anyone for healing.  It's already happened by the soveriegnty of God.  I encourage all skeptics to check it out for yourself instead of throwing stones from afar.
You know who are the real dumbest people of the planet? Those who ignorantly reject what they don't understand or care to know. ONLY TRUE RATIONAL EDUCATED PEOPLE CARE TO STUDY, TRY, WEIGHT AND TEST THE FACTS!! AND THE FACTS ARE JESUS WAS REAL,GOD BECAME MAN, HEALINGS DO HAPPEN, GOD IS REAL AND SHOWS HIMSELF TO THOSE WHO DILIGENTLY SEEK HIM. Thanks MSNBC. God stil loves the so called "skeptics" wish you could go to lakeland to see IF YOU COULD STAND GOD'S POWER!
I have been watching the revival and feel blessed that I can witness this move of God.  Todd and the others and the tv and internet are just the tools being used...it is God who heals...and Todd will be the first to tell you this.
I know God heals as my family and I have been healed many times over the years.  The most recent for me was being healed of a broken leg. I fell down our back steps...didn't want to go to the hospital but the ambulance ppl insisted becauase my leg was broken..and I have to admit..it looked bad and it hurt.  But at the hospital..my husband and children watched as the swelling left..and the injury that ran from my knee to foot began to scab over.  xrays were taken and I did not have anything broken.  Everyone was amazed. The doctor said she had never seen anyone with such an impressive injury without anything broken.
Did I pray? You bet I did..and I prayed most of the time in the Spirit..or tongues as most say.  God still heals...He has not changed.  He is the same today as He was yesterday and will be tomorrow.
If Jesus were alive today, healing others, performing miracles, what would we say of Him?  Would He fit neatly into Geivett's "branch of Christianity"?

I am deeply touched by the worship, the prayer, the love, and the sincerity of the leaders of Ignited Church that hosted a 5-day conference that turned into a 50-plus day event,... and to the city of Lakeland, FL!

Perhaps we should pay attention and ask God, "Is this You?"
A 2-3 year old boy from my church went and was healed from deafness in one ear.  So my family and I went to check this out.  There is a tangible presence of God in the atmosphere even before the meeting starts.  I saw many amazing miracles.  Many of the miracles have been documented by doctors reports.  A man who lives in our area who had cancer also went and was totally healed. My son, age 18, had a chance to pray with a Deaf woman there, and she was healed; in addition she was able to see clearly without here glasses.  This is not about Todd Bentley praying for people.  In Joel 2, the Bible speaks of God pouring out his spirit in the last days.  This is that.
I used to be skeptical of such healings when I only knew about God. Now that I know Him personally and have been healed nine times over 20 years of my life, I understand my God to be a God of love. God is so far greater than anything we can imagine that people struggle with accepting Him. If they can wrap their minds around Him, then they might accept Him. I am so thankful that we serve a loving God who will always be more than we can ever comprehend. The more He shows himself to me, the more I understand how much He loves mankind. Jesus died for us to provide a way for us back to the Father after the fall of Adam and Eve.
It is a free gift for us, paid for by Jesus giving his very life for us. That's the kind of God who performs these awesome, authentic healings! I embrace wholeheartedly the work the God is doing through Todd.
I believe in God but this just another Jimmy Swaggert spin off.  How about writing a story about high gas prices and how our dollar is worth less and less everyday?  Can Todd Bentley heal those things for us if he has supernatural powers?  He could reach a lot more people than just Florida.  Completely ridiculous.  If you believe in God, you do not have to pay for it.  Making money in the name of God is wrong and Todd Bentley is a fake.  Believe it.
JUDGE NOT, LEST YE BE JUDGED! How is it for anyone to judge Todd Bentley? Only God knows what is in Todd Bentley's heart. Besides works without faith is dead.
Wow!!!  Thank you for reporting on this story. I have been watching on the internet since April 12th. We as Christians have to remember that even Jesus walked among the "Pharisees" .... they witnessed some of his greatest miracles and still did not believe and murmurred against him.  Why are we surprised today that there are people that are skeptical.... i say don't judge it until you have gone there.  I plan on going in July for 6 days and can't wait to see what God does in my life.  My hips were healed of pain over the internet when watching and when one has truly felt the presence of God..... there is no more denying.  I pray that all the "fence watchers" and critics get blessed somewhere in their lives along the way before Jesus returns for his people. God truly just wants to be let out of the "box" that the Church has so neatly tried to squeeze him into and reveal His Love and His Power to this dying and hurting world.
A young friend visited the Lakeland meetings in May.  She is tattooed and pierced like Todd Bentley and might look a little out of place in a church that professor R. Douglas Geivett was attending.  Todd said one night that God was healing depression and addiction.  She felt like that was for her.  Since she has been back, my young friend has not smoked and that beautiful sound I am hearing when ever she is around....her laughter!
This truly is historic in a sense that not only people from Florida are being touch by this drastic enviroment but people from all over the world are flocking to this outpouring! In John 17 Jesus prays for him self before his cruxificion, but not only does he pray for himself but he prays for his disciples and those that would believe in him and as he prays he states " Father that they may become one as you and I are one so that the world will know that you have sent me!" I truly believe that this outpouring is bringing God's children together and they are becoming one in HIS extravagant prescence. And I leave with this MAY THE WORLD SEE THESE PEOPLE BECOME ONE SO THAT ALL WILL COME TO BELIEVE THAT THE FATHER SENT JESUS!!!! AMEN AND AMEN!
Jesus is REAL. He is the same yesterday, today and forevermore. I believe whats happening in lakeland florida is going to become a norm with all believers in Jesus Christ than an exception.

All glory be to GOD alone Forever and ever in Jesus's name!      God richly bless you and reward you Todd for letting Holy Spirit have His way!
Signs, wonders, healing and deliverance were normal experiences in the new testament, first century church.  They are also NORMAL expressions in Pentecostal and Charismatic Christians and churches!  I guess that R. Douglas Geivett the conservative theological professor does not consider such churches or believers "legitimate branches" of Christianity... HOW WRONG!
Statistics show that Pentecostal churches are the fastest growing segment of Christianity on  planet earth today!  We who have been baptized in the Holy Spirit and FIRE affirm not a man, but and genuine outpouring of the Spirit of the LIVING GOD!!!
Glad to see this on a major news network. It is only growing and growing. My husband and I feel the awesome presence of the Lord as we watch on God-TV, with hearts set on Jesus. He is real and making Himself known to all the world. He is using Todd Bentley in a mighty way. I can see all the major news networks setting up camp in Lakeland as more and more miracles unfold. God is Awesome - can't wait to see what He's up to - Thank you Alice Rhee for the story.
I've been there more than once -- it has to be experienced - like faith has to be experienced.  You can't put God in a box.  Thank you for your report on it.  If anyone does not believe it, they should come to Lakeland and see for themselves.  God Bless You.
Hey MSNBC, thank you so much for your article on the Florida Outpouring.

I'm reading the comments by your other readers as well...Wow, we really are a nation of many thoughts and divided persepctives aren't we?

To be true to your call of uncovering noteworthy stories in the face of the not so quiet "prejudices" against Christ, His people, and His works...[Hmmmmm. Prejudiced? Openly voicing hatred? Wow, did I just catch the "Politically Correct" acting out in a Politically Incorrect manner?] <gentle ribbing>

Anyway, I can see what you're up against in Truth telling and it makes me appreciate your efforts all the more!

From what I have gathered via the internet from Todd, I believe He would encourage a more thorough investigation of the healing claims...so, take the P.I.'s up on their demands and "Go for it!!" The whole Truth, and nothing but the Truth!" [Dare I say, "So help you God?"] <more well intentioned gentle ribbing>

Well, He did say, The Truth shall set you free! Take this from someone who has lived in both camps...."Freedom Rocks!!

Anyway, thanks! You restore my hope in a "truth gathering" style of reporting....like the old days!
I miss that. Many blessings to you all!
I have plenty of words for the overly-educated, but unlearned theologians, but my words pall in comparison to God’s Words:  I Corinthians 1:20, 25  “Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this world? Hath not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?   Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.” Isaiah 44:24, 25   “Thus saith Jehovah, thy Redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb: I am Jehovah, that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth, that frustrateth the signs of the liars, and maketh diviners mad; that turneth wise men backward, and maketh their knowledge foolish.”   Rev. Todd Bentley doesn’t even get a chance to pray for these people.  As Todd spends many hours in God's presence, he shows up every night with God's glory on him, and then the GLORY flows on everyone healing and delivering them.  Most are already healed when they get on the stage. Don’t feel too bad; you are not the first one - satan was also jealous of God’s glory.  PS:  My granddaughter walked out of the hospital two years ago after being on machines with no brain waves and not able to breathe on her own for three days.  Guess what?  God revived her all by Himself.  I guess you haven’t heard that there have been several resurrections from the dead connected in some way to the Florida revival – one two-year-old just before being cut open for harvesting of her organs and another a man already in his casket sat up alive and well. Now that's what you call a radical Christian who believes in the resurrection!!!  Get ready!  Get ready!  There will be many more.  God has to get his Church ready for His soon return.  I would rather jump up and shout over that than over a little brown ball going across a white line.

"DON'T YOU PEOPLE READ YOUR BIBLES?!" - I sure do...do you?

"Seriously, this is ridiculous." - Not really.  I admit, some of the things that happen in these services are a bit out of my comfort zone - but hardly non- or anti-biblical.  Read Acts 2, they appeared to be drunk to those in the area.  We are fools for Christs sake my friend.  God's wisdom is as foolishness to men, who are we to tell Him who to use or how He can act?

"The Bible make it VERY clear that the apostles were able to heal and do miracles, they were able to pass that gift on to someone else ONCE, and after that, that gift died out." - Cite your verse, I've read the NT time and time again and have never read such a thing.

"The power to perform miracles was to prove that Jesus was the messiah and was for the Jews, to help them believe...But after that, we had the Word of God to give us faith." - Again, cite the source(s.)  In the Great Commision Christ told us that the signs of casting out devils, healing the sick, and speaking in new tongues would follow His believers.  That verse, among many others, applies to you and me.

"And is this guy even preaching the right doctrine?" - I've kept my eye on Todd for a few months even before the revival, and everything I've heard Him teach directly lines up with the Word of God.

"How is his life?" - I obviously don't know him personally, but from what I have seen he seems to have a solid Godly lifestyle.

"A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot product good fruit." - This is true.  And I have not seen any so far, doctrinally or in lifestyle.

"Is he following the formula in the Bible for making disciples?" - ?

"Is he even making Disciples?" - Absolutely.  They are biblically training anyone who will come (as many as 500 people a day) to preach the gospel, then they are sending them out preaching salvation through repentance and grace by faith in Jesus Christ.

Is he teaching people to obey the Word? - Yes.  If anyone wants proof, just watch the Revival for a few nights with a Bible and Strong's Concordance in hand.  All your questions will most likely be answered.

"The Bible says that the servants of Satan masquarade as angels of light, that wolves will come in sheeps clothing, and that false teachers will abound." - Very true, and we all must be cautious not to be taken by strange doctrine.  But so far, and I've watched every night, his doctrine and teachings (although visibly different from what many of us are used to in our local church) hold sound to biblical doctrine.

Anyone who questions this stuff, especially Mr. Wilson, feel free to e-mail me @ jesus_freak777@ilovejesus.net - I don't claim to have all the answers, and if you can prove me or this revival wrong by scripture, feel free!

Also for the record, I have a friend who was healed of colorblindness and another friends son who was healed of a chronic sickness as well while watching on GODTV.  Not to the Glory of Todd, but God moving in the body of Christ.

Thanks MSNBC, this is a well written story.  My only recommendation is that for your next story like this is to find the people that have and have not been healed.  Get their opinions, and if possible the doctor confirmed records of the crazy stuff being heald like MS and AIDS.

 Be blessed all!

 In Christ,

Jesus is alive and well and everyone who chooses to ignore it will be judged for that and by then it will be too late. He loves you weather you like it or not
Let The FIRE Fall!!!
We are watching in Cincinnati, Ohio. My nephew had a cyst or boil on his leg that hurt and was a little bigger than a marble. He prayed and believed for the healing when Todd Bently said God said he was healing tumors and growths, and his boil immeditaly shurnk to almost non exsistant and the pain was gone. Within few days the growth completly gone. We praise God! God is the healer~!   This is our God
Concerning what the man said about God's healing outpouring not fitting neatly into Christianity...
When Jesus was here on earth, nothing that He did fit neatly into any part of judaism! Jesus was radical and considered crazy by most. I would personally be scared if any of this move of God fit neatly into our standards. Only we can put God in a box my friend. And when God, the master of the universe is not small enough for your box, then he will not fit into what we call Christianity. Gos is so much more than us, and created everything! We act as if we know everything. We think that God is the puzzle piece to us, to our world. we belittle the master of the universe and try to make Him just apuzzle piece, when in reality we are the puzzle pieces, we are not the picture on the box. God is the picture on the box.
Good report. The whole world is focussing on what happens in Lakeland. I am watching via Internet on God TV. Our world needs a fresh touch of God's Holy Spirit. We need it in Switzerland too! Sozo - healing by Jesus Christ of body, soal, mind and spirit.
Thank you MSNBC for writing an article that was well written and not biased to one side or the other. We get too many biased stories in the news and that makes me not want to turn them on. As for the comments left on this article, you can't please every body and every one is entitled to their own opinions even if it's not true. God bless.
Those who have not been to Lakeland but only condemn and criticize are usually offended by the Lord b/c of some crummy religious junk and/or immature Christians. I have been guilty of both of these things in the past as most of us Christians have been, but the Lord is raising up a Body that will be demonstrating the Fullness of Christ in the earth and the Lakeland revival healings and miraculous is just a foretaste of that which is coming and will be supernaturally natural!  Hold on to your seat, we are in for the Ride of our life!
MSNBC - please don't stop checking into this.  Check into the documentations and prove or disprove what is being done.  Many are interested in the facts - are there true miracles? Are any healings genuine?  There will be skeptics - even the bible states that skeptics will not believe even if the proof is before their eyes - check Luke 16.  But to recoin an old adage - don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. God can validate His own works.   What is good - hold fast to it and realize that God still works in ways far above our understanding.  HE is GOD.
I believe that we do not understand the times we are living in, the kids are hungry for supernatural power as is witnessed by the explosion of harry potter books and the new age movement pushed by well-known celebrities. We as a church body have failed to show the world that we have the true power and authority, because we have not obeyed the command of Jesus.
We had it all along and have not used it and now when God, Himself shows up and uses a sold-out believer like Todd, who is only taking God at His word and when hundreds of people from every corner of the world start receiving healing, we cannot comprehend it.
So what we can't comprehend, we criticize because otherwise we would have to make room in our brain for the God component and that would really undo alot of people.
We have been there on 5 occasions and are planning to go again, what amazes me is the hunger for more of God than I have ever seen in any church building and I've been saved for 37 years.
God always gives us the opportunity to accept what He is doing or to reject it,but don't go criticizing what you can't comprehend.
