Revivalist claims hundreds of healings

Posted: Thursday, May 29, 2008 8:36 AM

LAKELAND, Fla. – "Holy Spirit fall! God is here! We want more! More, more, more!"

That's what Canadian evangelist Todd Bentley yells out nearly every evening to the thousands who gather to hear him preach. The 32-year-old Bentley looks more like a biker than a minister, with body piercings and tattoos all over his arms and neck. But the crowds don't seem to mind how he looks. They just want what they believe Bentley has – the ability to heal them.

Todd Bentley at the Lakeland Convention Center in Lakeland, Fla. on May 21.

Bentley claims that God has used him to supernaturally heal hundreds of people of diseases ranging from glaucoma to diabetes to even cancer. How to explain it?

Bentley said in an interview that he doesn't know exactly why now, why him, why Lakeland, and he does not promise that everyone who comes to him will be healed. But he does maintain a pragmatic posture toward prayer.

"I say, you have nothing to lose but your sickness. If the doctors can't help you, why wouldn't you give God a chance?"

Growing crowds
"If you want God, just come get some," he shouts on stage nearly every night.

Bentley has repeated a version of this invitation daily since April 2 when he and his team from Fresh Fire Ministries, which he founded in 1997,  first arrived here from British Columbia, Canada, for what he thought would be five days of "revival" meetings in a local church. But those plans changed, he said, because "God is moving...and people know something is happening here." His meetings have been extended indefinitely.

While Bentley and Fresh Fire Ministries are not part of an organized Protestant denomination, his beliefs tend to follow Pentecostal, charismatic traditions.

He claims that God has used him repeatedly before this revival to heal the sick, but added that this series of revival meetings is unprecedented in his personal experience as a minister.

The meetings have outgrown four venues, including a local convention center that seats roughly 7,000. Now they meet under an air-conditioned tent that can accommodate 10,000 on the grounds of the local airport. Organizers estimate that more than 140,000 people from at least 40 nations have attended meetings here.

In this country, the self-billed "Florida outpouring" has generated mostly local media attention. But word of the revival has been generating plenty of buzz online, taking Bentley’s message and claims far beyond Florida.

So far, according to  Fresh Fire Ministries, 1.2 million people have watched live streaming broadcasts of the meetings on the Internet. The meetings also are carried on the religious satellite channel, God TV, which transmits Bentley's healing services to more than 200 nations. In this country, God TV is carried on DIRECTV.

Not everyone is comfortable with this expression of Christianity, including some Protestant theologians. R. Douglas Geivett, a professor at the conservative, evangelical Talbot School of Theology, is deeply skeptical of the "Florida outpouring" and does not believe Bentley’s claims of supernatural healing are consistent with Christian doctrine

"I don’t think it fits neatly into any branch of Christianity," said Geivett. "Mr. Bentley’s worldview appears to be a mixture of New Age notions, an obsession with the paranormal, and an untutored grasp of Christian theology."

A woman named Deborah, who suffers from scoliosis, prays with Todd Bentley in Lakeland, Fla. on May 5 as David Tomberlin looks on and Russ Roderick acts as a “catcher.” Afterwards, she claimed her illness was healed.

Claims of healing
Still, what seems to be drawing all these people of varying ages, ethnicities, and classes is a clear hunger for what Bentley's meetings are offering: the hope of healing and some sort of touch from God.

David Tomberlin, an evangelist who's been dubbed the "Ryan Seacrest" of these meetings because he serves as an emcee of sorts, tried to explain the claims of healings, saying, "The Bible talks about Jesus healing sick people. It says he was moved by compassion, so part of it is God's heart of compassion."

So every night, Bentley and his ministry team take to the stage and try to call heaven down to earth.

That's when the sick are urged to come forward for prayer and healing.

In many instances, Bentley places his hands on someone's head or area of infirmity and cries out for the power of God to descend. In response, some people may stand and physically tremble, while others may literally fall down to the ground in what they call "falling under the power" of the Holy Spirit.

Bentley’s associates say that this is not a painful experience, but rather one of being physically overcome by the loving presence of God. Anticipating these sorts of responses, one of Bentley's staff members stands behind each individual to serve as a "catcher" to gently guide the person down to the floor. Skeptics claim this "falling" can be the result of being overcome with emotion or a learned behavior.

At a recent meeting, Stephen Godula was brought on stage to tell his story. He testified that he had been healed of multiple forms of cancer by watching the meetings on the Internet at home. He plans to return to his oncologist in Philadelphia to document his healing.

Patsy Wallingford traveled from Arkansas in search of healing. Since a tractor-trailer plowed into her mobile home three years ago, Wallingford has been bound to a wheelchair because of nerve damage in her legs and feet.

On a recent night, Wallingford took to the stage and received a prayer from Bentley. "I felt like what was a warm water flow from the top of my head to the bottom of my feet," she explained.

And that's when, she said, she could feel something cold against her right foot; she decided to step out in faith and step out of her wheelchair in front of clapping and cheering crowds.

As she pushed her wheelchair off the stage, she paused to answer questions from one of Bentley's staff members, who filled out a one-page form detailing the claims of miraculous healing.

Bentley and his staff say they welcome as much documentation as people are willing to provide after they return home.

What about the money?
Bentley and his ministry do not charge an entry fee for his meetings. Each evening, four hours into the service, at close to 11 p.m., white plastic offering buckets are passed around.

They asked for money only once and strangely, on the night this reporter was there, they took their offering so late at night that the crowd had thinned-out. Bentley also receives donations directly through his Web site.

The ministry said that the average donation per person is $3-$5. While some people were reluctant to talk about what they gave, one visitor from Finland said he was only able to put in a few dollars because his travel costs were so high.

A spokeswoman for the revival, Lynne Breidenbach, said the offerings have covered their enormous operating costs. Before the move to the airport grounds, she said the ministry paid a daily rental fee of $15,000 for the local convention center, as well as comparable fees for use of a stadium. His spokesperson didn’t know how much the current setup costs. The offerings, said Breidenbach, have not contributed to a significant infusion of cash for Bentley or his ministry.

According to Breidenbach, Bentley "continues to draw his standard salary, set by his board, from his office in Canada. It is a modest salary and is in the five-figure range." The ministry said that their financial records are subject to an outside audit every year.

Bentley said he was willing to open Fresh Fire Ministries’ bookkeeping records for the Lakeland revival meetings, but has yet to provide the documentation to msnbc.com. He said that he welcomes media attention and scrutiny because the "outpouring" is a work of God and he has "nothing to hide."

Taking the notion of any potential criticism head on, he said, "I don’t have time to debate whether revival is happening or not. I don’t have time to nitpick the reasons why God might not be moving." Instead, he said, his greater concern is to move as fervently in faith to see as many people healed as he can during this time.

Miracles?
And indeed, Bentley’s claims have stirred up debates within and outside the church.

Erik Thoennes, also a professor from the Talbot School of Theology, offers a more accepting, though still cautious stance, than his colleague Geivett.

Thoennes believes many Christians today are open to the idea that God might move in miraculous ways, even if they don’t embrace movements like Bentley’s. And, he offered specific advice to non-Christians who may be confounded by such reports: "I’d hope they wouldn’t get distracted by movements that seem odd, or by how goofy Christians can be, so that they miss seeing Jesus as the most beautiful, good, loving, just, true, person there is."

Thank you for this article, I have watched this online and although I thought this Todd Bentley looked rather odd, I am convinced of his sincerity and of the undeniable miracles that honest people are testifying to.
Thanks Msnbc
I just returned from the Lakeland Revival and it was so amazing. Do I believe in the miracles I saw? Absolutely! It's not about money...or like the article says...he would have taken up one at the beginning of the meeting and not after 1.000's had left the meeting!  But if you don't believe...go see it for yourself...you'll be changed forever!
If this weren't the real thing, why would so many people bother attending?  How do you explain it spreading all over the world?  People who have attended are taking it back home.  We have revival going on now at Gateway Christian Fellowship in Connecticut because of people who attended Lakeland.  People lead very busy lives and will not bother attending if something wasn't happening.  You can barely get 90 people out to church on a Sunday morning, but thousands are attending this revivial.  (millions if you count the people tuning in on the internet)  This will make the history books, just like the Great Awakening in New England prior to the Revolutionary War.  Check out Jonathan Edwards and George Whitfield on the internet.
Thank you so much for a balanced article on this revival.  I hope your leadership in reporting this wonderful happening will inspire more media outlets to investigate, see for themselves what is going on in Lakeland, and report it to the world.  My husband and I are watching with great interest and with joy and excitment and gratitude over what God is doing in our country.  God, bless America!!
I heard Todd say to come and get some (meaning to receive an impartation of this anointing of God). So, I went and did that. I went to Lakeland and got some. The Bible tells us that Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever. It says that those who believe will do the same works that Jesus did, that of healing the sick and raising the dead. That is happening through this revival, and it is also connecting many ministries throughout the world.
Thank you for a well balanced presentation of the move of God in Lakeland Florida.  Alice I speak blessings upon you and your family for writing such a positive article.

It was good to read the NBC report. I went to The Florida Healing Outpouring for a week with my family. While we were there we experienced God’s presence and witnessed many people healed. We also received an in-partation and since coming back in Canada we have seen several people healed as I prayed for them. One woman who had a hernia said, “the hernia when back into her body. A pastor who was on his deathbed after two heart attacks experienced fire in his chest and received strength. People who had chronic pain experienced the pain leave, etc.

As a believer in Jesus I believe that Jesus is the same today, as He was 2000 years ago. The religious sceptics disbelieved Jesus then as they do today, but people who are hungry for God will find Him. Let’s simply believe what the Bible says. I want to encourage people to watch the Florida Outpouring on god.tv as well as to go there personally, especially if they are in need of healing.
.
What a lousy bit of reporting. 'Twould have been rather easy to actually verify these healing claims. But of course, that would take more effort than simply collecting various opinions.

BTW, I seriously think this sort of thing, as well as the TBN, is all an undercover plot by atheists to make Christians looks stupid.

What part of 'testing the spirits' don't you understand? We aren't supposed to see if we 'feel' cool, if we 'feel' fuzzy. This is nuts. No wonder atheists think that they are so smart - if this is what they think Christianity is, I understand completely. Truly Spirit filled men like Luther, Calvin, Augustine, Spurgeon, et. al. would be turning over in their graves...
All I can say is WOW!
My husband and I were at the meeting this past week...such a presence of God, just being there was refreshing...this is real. Thank you MSNBC for covering this amazing and important story, I hope you will follow up on some of the healing reports...I would welcome the opportunity to hear back from those claiming to be healed, and having those claims documented by Doctor reports.  God is not afraid to document His claims...after all He did declare, in writing, the first coming of Jesus and I believe His return will also be exactly as He said it would be.  Looking forward to hearing more from MSNBC.
Me and my husband  have been watching the revival every since it started about 60 days ago.  It is totally captivating and awesome to see God move, using Todd Bentley, healing and reviving people from the dead.  Thank you MSNBC for doing this story.  The movement is spreading throughout the world.  Others come to the revival, receive the power to heal and resurrect people from the dead and they take that power home to where they live. We are so blessed to see him working.  Praise God!!!!
I can honestly say that I went to the revival... and I was healed twice, I was attacked 4 years ago and left for dead, someone stabbed me in the throat, and I grabbed the knife.. there was nerve damage to my hand and the tendons in my throat , all that was healed and I haven't had a problem since. What you people need to realize is Todd Bentley isn't healing these people, God is, he's working through Todd. And as far as the "falling out" goes, I go to a pentacostal church, and I have had hands laid on me before, theres times where I have gone down, and theres times where I haven't opened myself up to it and didn't. The power of God is soooooooo strong in lakeland its undescribable,it's true, Todd barely touched me, and God put me down. It's something that you really have to see to believe and you can't really convince non believers otherwise, but it's deff. a life changing experience. All thoes who truly don't believe in this, God Bless you and you will be in my prayers tonight.
What, did you check this out? Did anyone actually get healed?
I can,t beleive the comments I,m reading of unbelief in the power of god and god using todd.Have you not read your bible or just skip the parts that seem to wild for you..Why are you even reading the bible?.Is it not gods word?. Do you not believe it? Is it people are jealous that god is using todd in such a great way. He wants to use you too but it seems people are so hard hearted and blind..Let go of your will and let god do his will and you will see greatness. It seems the greater god does the less some people believe..Do or some of you not beleive in fairy tales or santa claus. Santas not real but you get all excited for him to pop down that chimney and give you gifts your parents actually bought...Give me a break..Flying saucers???????Don,t knock it till you experience the presence of god. After you have then make a logic opinion. As far as todd and his tatoos etc..he is the coolest evangilist that has ever lived and god is using him mightly. Go todd.....
People are so lame, and that is why the world is messed up today!!!!  They think that if some amputee grew a new limb, that would be a bona fide miracle.  What about a new born baby smiling at you for the first time.  Watching someone actually be nice to someone without expecting a reward.  That is a miracle.

I remember when I was unemployed and struggling to find a job.  Out of the blue (and without my wife or I asking), her grandmother sent us a check which really helped out in a difficult time.  That was a miracle!

Miracles come in all shapes and sizes today and God takes care of us.  But people just don't pay attention to the things going on around them because they are so self-centered and self-involved with their lives.
i believe these reports because i also got healed from scholiosis while watching the florida healing outpouring
My husband and I went on the 4th of July weekend and it was the most awesome experience.  God is still in the healing business.
The point of the apostles in the Bible was to draw Men to Jesus Christ, that men might be saved through the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ on the cross, paying for the remission of our sins. Healing the body, does not heal the soul only the blood of Jesus Christ (no Man) can do that.
I have heard no gospel message from this man, There are many Gods but only One Lord Jesus Christ.
nutters
At age 46 I became sick with mono which then left me with chronic fatigue.  I was not well for a full three years then one night I happened upon Todd Bentley (I'm sure it was the good Lord's hand that led me to that channel).  As I laid in bed praying I felt something being pulled from my body...  I haven't had symptoms since (it's been almost 3 months).  I'm so grateful to God, it's wonderful to feel good again.
I think this just shows Prophecies from the Bible comming true. In Matthew 24:4-14 Jesus speaks about the comming of the Son of Man. You will not catch my family at that Church. If people would just read the Bible they would see what's going on right in front of their faces. I pitty anyone who is drawn into this and decieved. The Tribulation after the comming of Jesus is going to be awful. I pray you all seek God on this.
God is love,God is good all the time.He sent His only Son Jesus Crist to perish on that old wooden cross so that we could go free. But never again,He is coming back in power and Glory to take His people home. The Lord of Lords,The King of Kings,The Lamb of God,The Rock,My Deliverer,Master,Saviour,Mighty one of Israel, counselor,King of Glory,My Deliverer is coming and my Deliverer is standing by.HE IS THE ALPHA AND THE OMEGA THE BEGINNING AND THE END.HE IS SEATED ON THE HEAVENLY THRONE looking over His children. He is HOLY,HOLY,HOLY,HOLY,HOLY,HOLY,IS THE LORD GOD ALMIGHTY.Every knee shall bend and confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.So many people today do not know who Jesus is.They have never felt His presence within their soul,Jesus can set you free,Jesus is the only one who can set them free, and make men whole.Glory to God Hallaleujah to the Lamb of God.God is one that cannot lie,His word never comes back null and void.It always acomplishes Gods Plan. There is power in the Blood of Jesus Christ.Oh if we could just touch the Hem of His garment.I will testify to that amazing Grace In the eightys my son had blood clots in his legs, they ended going all over his body.Doctors said call the family in the clots had gone to his lungs closed one up completely and half of the other one.He was only five years old only one other that young had ever had a blood clot it was a twelve year old girl in philadelphia. They did not really know how to treat one that young. But Glory to God there is power in prayer and God raised him up off of that death bed. He came home never again sick again,He now has a beautiful wife, son and a new baby daughter, the Doctors said she had stopped growing in the womb Glory to God through prayer and me and my family laying hands on my pregnant daughter in laws belly and claiming a healthy baby she was a healthy full term baby.I want you to know that there is power in prayer and we have not because we ask not,we read about this in the Holy Bible. My Husband was didagnosed with bladder cancer a few years back,we were told that it was the fastest gowing kind.Doctors had His scheduled for all king of treatments. But thanks to Gods children obeying His word and never underestimating the power of God,We were able to go to healing revivals in Nahunta Georgia where I attent church a lot and I love to be in Revival seeing God still doing His work today. My husband was completely healed with only the simplest treatment with only a few procedures. His cat scans and pet scans and all of the other tests came back NO CANCER! He returned back  to His job still having good reports. So my Brothers and Sisters Never underestimate God Mighty Power He Still Heals Today. We serve a MIghty God.
I have a pray request.  pray that God restore my health n everything satan stole from me..... I want gods miracles!!!!!
I know this is real, Todd Bentley is nobody, he is just letting the lord use him. If you try to find salvation in Todd you will not, if you try to find Salvation from Jesus you will. For all those negative comments….especially the man that says his wallet is hurting….if you have faith and let the lord be lord he will bless you so much more so that you wallet does not hurt or  you get blessing in the other places that you want. I am very young and recently gave my life to Jesus; he has delivered me and blesses me well beyond what I deserve. He can and will do that for anyone, all you have to do is seek him. If you value the world and money over him you will be empty. If you put the lord first you will be filled. How do you know what being filled feels like until you are filled??? Why don’t you try and find out! For all those doubters out there I dare you to do one thing. Why don’t you ask Jesus? Be open to the answer he will bring you. For he loves you even if you hate him and also don’t believe him. Jesus cries for you, yes you, the one that is reading what I have written.
And for the person that says this is a crazy cult, wow, yes there are many many crazy cults and many many false churches and more but one thing that that person needs to remember or see is that there really is a Jesus and a Santen that wants to keep you in bondage. He will do anything it takes. Like inventing crazy cults..sooooooo hmmmm how to tell what a crazy cult and what’s not, you have to ask the lord yourself and ask him to revile to you what’s going on. Because if I was reading this article first hand and did not know what was going on, ya you bet ya I would not believe it. But I really seeked the lord on this and I know it is just one way the lord is moving. There is so many other things that are happening that is not written in papers…if you only knew.
This life is so much more then the physical, there is a spiritual world too. You know that atoms exist right? Well you don’t see them right? You have to use a telescope? Well you can not use worldly things to prove Jesus because it is spiritual. The only way you can know in your hart it is true is to experience it. To experience the lord and feel the truth in your soul. Sounds crazy but the truth is, is that it Jesus is real, he lives, and he loves you more than anyone on this earth does. Seek him!!!!!
