'McCain' POW bracelet found in storage

WASHINGTON, D.C. –  Leon Abbott made a startling discovery while rummaging through his late mother Sarah's personal effects last December.

"She was instrumental in launching the POW/MIA movement, and it turns out the bracelet she wore was John McCain's," Abbott said in an interview. "Pure coincidence."

Sarah Abbott and millions of other Americans began wearing the copper bracelets in 1970 to draw attention to the plight of U.S. service members missing or taken prisoner in Vietnam. She wore hers until McCain and his fellow POWs were released by North Vietnam in 1973.

She met McCain briefly at a reception in Washington, D.C., for the returning POWs.

"There were many people tugging on him at the time, so they didn't really have much of a conversation," Abbott said.

After her death in 2001, her belongings were put in storage in Florida, and Abbott came upon the bracelet six months ago in a storage box.

"I was pretty amazed," he said.

Abbott, who describes himself as an independent or a Democrat, not a Republican, has never met McCain, but he's willing to give the presumptive Republican presidential nominee the bracelet, if McCain would like it.

"I suppose the initial step would be to write him a letter and see how he reacts to it, but I don't want to politicize the event, so I was kind of waiting until after the election," Abbott said.

Carol Bates Brown, who began making the POW/MIA bracelets in 1970, said there is no way of knowing how many John McCain bracelets were distributed because no records were kept.

Incidentally, Abbott's mother was not the only family member who had a brush with history.

Her father, Gen. Leon Johnson, was awarded the Medal of Honor for leading the bombing raid on the Ploesti oil refineries in World War II.

"There were actually five Medals of Honor awarded on that mission, the most of any action, ever," Abbott said. "Three of them were posthumous."

Abbott plans to present his grandfather's Medal of Honor to the Army Heritage Museum in Carlisle, Pa., in November, right about the time of the presidential election.

The comment from Abbott that the most MOHs award for a single action being 5 for the Ploesti Oil Refinieries is wrong.  The most I am aware of was the Battle of Anzio, 22 medals awarded!  Check the following at Anzio Beach Head Veterans of WWII website for confirmation.

As a Plankowner and former crew member of USS ANZIO CG68 United States Naval Vessel, I can assure you we were well schooled in this battle.

The invasion of Normandy I am sure had more than 5 and may even more than Anzio, however I am very sure we were taught that the Anzio battle had the single highest number of MOHs for a single battle or combat action in history.
He has integrity - not wanting to politicize the event.
My father wore a POW bracelet with John's name on it as well.  As a little girl, when my attention was drawn to the bracelet, I would always ask dad to tell me a story about his times with "Johnny and the Bad Bunch", and I would say a little prayer for John.
I think its' amazing that the POW braclet was found, let alone John McCains.

God bless our POW's.
I think that's awesome. To have worn John McCain's bracelet and have a chance to return it to him. Kinda surprised someone still has it. After all these yrs. Why can't they still do that for the troops of today?
They deserve to be honored in a special way, too. And GOD BLESS our troops of today. WE have all of our troops past and present to thank for our freedom. Thank you very much. Claire
If he was "kind of waiting until after the election" then why are we hearing about it now?  Are we now going to see replica McCain POW bracelets sported all over the place?
First,
Who cares.
I WORE 3 BRACELETS INTUCSON IN70-s--one was for sgt.ECKLUND_HOW CAN WE SEE IF THEY EVER RETURNED??NANCEE IN PHOENIX
I have been wondering for a long time ..... Did/does John McCain suffer from PTSD ??? Does he carry Agent Orange Affliction?? A Nam POW for quite awhile....one would assume he suffered much stress and probably physical tortures.

A Vietnam Vet
Hopefully this will bring some attention back to the POW-MIA bracelet. In a time of cheap interchangeable rubber bracelets, very few people know what an engraved metal bracelet stands for. My bracelet bears the name of Sgt. Cecil Ray Bagwell, MIA 19 SEP 1951, Korea. I was in Korea 20 miles from where he was last seen 50 years to the day that he disappeared. You are not forgotten, Brother.
Wow! what a story. My mother as well had a silver John McCain bracelet in all of her belongings which we just recently went through at her passing in March. My mother, Faith Collins, ran the VIVA (voices in Vital America office in kansas city Mo in the 70's.
She passed in March of this year and going through her stuff we found his bracelet as well as many others and bumper stickers and such for the POW/MIA movement. We all wore one growing up and wrote letters to family members and did not take them off until they returned or was confirmed KIA as my man was.  This story is like looking in the mirror of late with mothers things. It was nice to read.
MCBUSH,oops scuse me McCain, is pushing under the voters noses that he is a war veteran and WE OWE HIM for that ? How far can he go with this ! THE POW are realy desgusted by his behavior ! When he thinks that enough is ENOUGH of HIS GAME PLAYING ? He starts to nauseat me too ! I wouldn't vote for this great grand dady NO MATER WHAT ! HE should rather bring down his rocking chair from his attic :O)
His family has such a tie with McCain but hes for Obama and he wants to keep this out of the press until after an election?  He doesnt deserve the freedom McCain served to help preserve for playing such politics.
Interesting.  I also have a McCain bracelet.  It's not in the best condition because I wore it for years.  But, that is NOT going to make me vote for McCain.  He was my candidate in 2000 - a hundreds of years ago.  Times change and so do the opinions of politicans.  At my age, I need a president who is going to outlive me.
According to my sources, Leon Johnson was a Colonel at the time of the Ploesti raid (Operation Tidal Wave), a West Pointer & Caltech grad, who ultimately retired from the Air Force as a full general, not as a brigadier general ...
Ill be surprised if he doesnt take it, for his POW experience is the only experience he has that is truthful and fully honest. I had to drop my Republican Party Registration after Bush failed us so badly without a sign of remorce. Now McSameo is following suit----8 years of Bush trumps 5 years POW.
I think the fact that there have been no comments is in fact a comment. That is... Who cares?
Gee Whiz!!!  Is McCain's POW status the only thing he has going for him in this election?  Seems like he brings it up in almost every conversation he has with anyone.  A lot of our soldiers were POW's, some came back, some were KIA and some are still MIA's.  One would think McCain was the ONLY POW in Nam.  He needs a wake-up call.  We have a lot of VietNam vets; is he helping them?  They came home to an ungrateful nation and today they are still suffering the atrocities of that war.
What a find!!! Thank all our vets, freedom always had a price and always will. John and his brothers are the backbone of our history. Tell all our military personal past and present- Thanks from this American family.
Kind of sad that some of you use this story to further bash McCain. Ok, so you don't like his politics, SO WHAT! this post isn't about his politics. It is about the fact that he was a POW. Show some respect people.

My bracelet has Maj. Richard A. Alm (SEMPER FI BROTHER), went missing Feb 1, 1966. I did some research and it is very interesting. You can go to www.pownetwork.org and check some of the POW/MIA's out. Maj. Alm (USMC) You can also, go to www.grunt.com (especially if you a a fellow Jarhead) they have the copper and aluminum POW/MIA bracelets. I have about 15 of them. I onlt wear one at a time though.

Claie, They do still "do" the bracelets for POW/MIA's for all wars including the IRaq War. go to the Grunt.com and check it out.

Semper Fidelis.

"Some poeple spend an entire lifetime, wondering if they made a different, Marines don't have that problem." Ronald Reagan. Or my personal favorite,

"The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group of animals I have ever seen. Thank God for the United States Marine Corps!" Eleanor Roosevelt

FREEDOM!!??? Americans give up their freedom more and more everyday, soon there will be no freedom of anything. Government or groups and even local governments are now telling us what we can do in our own homes and off the clock. Can we no longer decide what is best for ourselves and need someone else to tell us how to conduct our lives? It's a spit in the face to my father and anyone else who has fought in any war in America's history for freedoms that we now so foolishly and willing give up seemingly on a daily basis.. WAKE UP!!
For the person that asked where to search for information regarding POWs the Library of Congress has information:  http://www.loc.gov/rr/frd/powmia-home.html
it's the POW/MIA database (formed ironically by the "McCain bill" in 1991).  For those interested, they still do produce POW/MIA bracelets (many of us in the military have worn them for years) the National League of Families offers them for sale and 100% of the proceeds go to the National League of POW/MIA Families :  http://www.pow-miafamilies.org/bracelets_get.html

My final comment is for Michael from Portland.  To say that because this guy has ties to McCain (via a bracelet that his mother wore) and that he supports Obama he shouldn't have the freedom "McCain...helped...preserve" is about as un-American as it gets.  Our country was formed on the belief of freedom of the right to choose, particularly when it comes to our President.  To think that he should support McCain simply because his mother wore McCain's POW bracelet is plain ignorant.  I shook W's hand back during the 2004 election process (providing security at a campaign stop).  I can't stand the man...I think he should be impeached and then some...but I still shook his hand because he is (or at least the Supreme Court told us so in 2000) THE President of the United States.  I respect the office....the position...doesn't mean I have to respect the man.
"His family has such a tie with McCain but hes for Obama and he wants to keep this out of the press until after an election?  He doesnt deserve the freedom McCain served to help preserve for playing such politics."

Michael, your argument lacks integrity. The biggest honor we can give these former POWs is to vote based on our personal ideals, beliefs and ethics. This is what these people were fighting to defend. Anyone who gives John McCain a vote SOLELY because he was a POW is an uneducated and blind follower.

I'm not saying I don't respect McCain for his service, because I do. But a lot of you are talking as if he was in a war DEFENDING the US and our freedom, when in fact he was on the OFFENSIVE and probably killed more people with bombs than you're average serial killer has with knives.

Let's not forget that McCain caved under interrogation when other POWs did not. Funny how the media spins stories to omit the painful facts..If more of us sought the full story we might have a more objective media.

I salute any and all veterans who have served this country so I may be able to write my opinions. I was never able to be honored to wear one of these braclets, but no matter who's name was on it, I thank them, and all who have served. STOP the stupid political bashing and be glad you live in America.
You know, I just get sick of hearing people ragging on the military. My husband is in the Navy and done 3 tours that deal with this war. Without a President that knows nothing about the military like McCain, we would be in deep trouble. Yes he was a POW, but other people who say is he doing something for the other vets, I ask are you? These men and women who go into the military give up so much. Just think the next time you complain, think of the military personal that is sleeping in the dirt or their family back at home who is struggling finanicaly. Yes, we are just above poverty level, and they are the ones keeping you safe.
I think its horrible that we still left guys over there......I will never forgive our country for that.  No one should
WOW, how convienient it pops up now, McCain is a PHONY , He has not lived up to his "honorable" reputation for the last 10 years, and now he's become a Whore for Big oil. Why dont you ask McCain why he refused to help close "THE ENRON LOOPHOLE", or why he wont make his friends in big oil drill in the untouched 68 MILLION ACRES of land that was "GIVEN" to them for drilling, instead they have hoarded it, and now they want our coasts and alaska and McCain wants to give it to them, instead of supporting the penalties that the dems would like to immpose on them for the UNDRILLED 68 MILLION ACRES they still have not touched, This is where the majority of oil is located that Bush and McSame keep reffering to.  So where were all of you when the swift boat liars smeared John Kerry.  McCain dropped his wife and kids when he came home and found her old and cripple, What did he do??? He found a young blond trophy wife.  I guess this is what passes for "honor" in the republican party.
are they making any more?

I would love have a copy to wear - he is a stand up guy.
To the poster that said, "Who cares?" - I CARE AND THERE ARE MANY OTHERS THAT DO AS WELL!

Take a moment to visit the POW Network (do a Google) to find out the status of the name on your bracelet. Also you can check the DPMO website (Google again) for updates on WWII vets.

We must not forget that there are families that deal with these issues daily and face them with dignity and fortitude. It doesn't matter what name is on the bracelet, some became famous, others did not. What matters is they were WILLING to give their lives (as some did), captivity, and being wounded for the freedoms we all enjoy today.

Before you begin to judge Sen. McCain for his politics, remember he first served our country in uniform, was tortured as a POW, and then when the uniform came off, he continued to serve America. If you can do it better, then get off your duffs, do it, and quit complaining.
Mike Jones,

Iwo Jima, 27 MOH's awarded.  Most in any single battle...
Semper FI!!!!
Pretty obvious the post about what McCain is doing for the Vietna vet is NOT from a Vietnam vet or family member of a VV.  The Democrats were in power when they returned, and did nothing for them for years and years.  Ask any Vet who is now able to get a lot of help from the Veteran's Services WHO is most responsible for the recent elevation of benefits and you'll find out it's Republican members of Congress and Republican Presidents.  It amazes me how many Democrats follow like sheep and take everything posted that's negative about Republican candidates as Gospel.  Republicans - make sure you vote!!  Older Americans - make sure you vote!!  The younger, less experienced voters will!!
I think it is commendable that he is willing to return it.  Personally, as a Vietnam Veteran, I wear a Obama POW braclet all the time.  It is not inscribed because it use to be a Clinton POW braclet but I never got around to puttng his name on it--just kidding, of course.  My hat is always off to those who served their country.  Having served in an unpopular war did not deter my loyalty and commitment to my country, for which I served 5 years. Personally, I did not support McCain when he ran before but I certainly would rather have a veteran as our Commander in Chief than a "war wennie".
Joe;
He cabn't lift his arms to button his own shirts.
Muscle damage from long hours shackled in stress
positions. Torture; of course. It wasn't from
basketball. Mentally, who knows? The right trigger
has been seen to set him off. Can you blame him?
Or are you the fraud you accuse him of. At least he's not
a hypocrit
Corrections:

The Polesti raid yeilding 5 MOHs was the most awarded for a single action, the key phrase being single action. That mission was a one-day event whereas the Anzio Battle took months. There were well over 30 Polesti raids conducted over several weeks, but the 5 MOHs awarded were for conduct displayed on one particular mission aka single action.

True, Leon Johnson was a Colonel at the time of the Ploesti raid, commanding the 44th BG. Afterwards, he was promoted to Brig. General and given command of the 14th Bomb Wing. Among the bomb groups under his command was the original 492nd BG. Last week one of its crews, the McMurray Crew, was buried at Arlington after being MIA for 64 years. Leon Abbott attended the funeral representing his deceased grandfather, who was this crew's wing commander at the time they were killed. John Rutherford also attended the funeral. Although he didn't meet Abbott at the funeral, I told him who he was and explained his grandfather was the McMurray Crew's Brig. General. I did not mention Leon Johnson stayed in the Air Force and retired as a four-star general because at the time our focus was on the McMurray Crew and their families. So if you want to blame somebody for the technical error, blame me.

John Rutherford has written two articles on the McMurray Crew:

April: http://dailynightly.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/04/30/955693.aspx
June: http://dailynightly.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/06/17/1149213.aspx

Out of curiousity, Rutherford called Leon Abbott a few days after the funeral. They talked about his mother's POW bracelet and his grandfather MOH among other things. Obviously, these two items are interesting bits of triva Rutherford felt were worth sharing to his readers. Nothing political here, just a story of a man who has a couple of trivia items he plans to donate. As a friend of Leon Abbott, I can tell you he hasn't said who he plans on voting for because it's not my business. So please don't anyone make assumptions about his private thoughts.

Comments:

To everyone who responded with comments concerning the trivia items... thank you for sharing your stories and thoughts. I enjoyed reading them. I too had a bracelet with the name Jay Jensen and was fortunate to be able to give it to him after his six-year internment at Hanoi Hilton. I know a lady who even today hasn't taken her bracelet off because her guy is still MIA. That's real dedication, especially when considering she never knew him!
Republican presidents protecting vets' rights?  You have GOT TO Be kidding...that or your so blind as to think that everything a republican says about defense/vets is right and everything democrats do is against defense/vets.  Our current president dodged his duty by being AWOL...AWOL during Vietnam...why? because he didn't dare take a pee test for his flight status it would've shown cocaine.  How about some more of your president protecting vets rights:

"The leaders of America's most prominent veterans organizations say that President Bush is failing to honor past commitments to military men and women even as he prepares to send a new generation of soldiers and sailors into combat. ... " ''I'm terribly frustrated and extremely angry,'' said retired Air Force Colonel George ''Bud'' Day, a Republican who won the Medal of Honor and was a prisoner of war in North Vietnam with Senator John McCain of Arizona.

Day said Bush is violating his oft-repeated campaign pledge to veterans: ''A promise made is a promise kept.'' " Hoping to get the president to disavow the 1995 decision on veterans health care, Day said he used a Medal of Honor reception in June to ask Bush about it personally.

''I said to him, `Mr. President, I'm Colonel Bud Day. You know your campaign [promise], a promise made is a promise kept, is being broken.' His eyes just glazed over,'' Day said. ''He really had no idea what I was talking about.'' "

Most presidents, and Congress turn on our Vets...they all should be lined up and well you know.  Send their children off to an unlawful war and see how quick vets. benefits are supported/restored.

Our country is a disgrace when it comes to veteran's benefits...big on "support our troops" but when it comes down to the $$$ back down...forget.
I have the John McCain POW Bracelet that I got in late 1967 and wore until he came home.  I didn't know there were so many others.  i have received two letters from Senator McCain and the first one he stated that the braclet I had was his name & date of capture.
I will always applaud anyone who served their country whether they were either a POW or a "Cold War" veteran, they all deserve our thanks and respect. It does not mean that I would vote for anyone just because of their service but they are to be feted for it.
I never served in the military. I admit the idea of following orders and potentially living in deplorable conditions may me give up any thought of it.

I am old enough to know this. There is at least one time in a man's life when he can make his own life easier by throwing in a friend or friends.

Its easy to make the excuses. They did this or that. They werent really a friend. They threw me in first.

John McCain was tested in conditions far worst than many of use could survive. He didnt take the opportunity to have someone else suffer his pain. He took it and remained honorable.

Those who impune him or his integrity live an easier life because of the suffering of people who serve in the military. They would never qualify to be considered for a "jury of his peers" if a true evaluation were applied.

Hate his policies or his politics but dont pretend that you are qualified to impune his honor.

Has any one seem john kerry wounds for his Purple heart.all you have to do is give the company clert a coule buck to put your name on the list. Our Hero are coming home miss legs and arms for their Purple heart.

You "nauseat" me with your spelling and sentence content. It is people like you whose opinions should never be spoken because you make yourself look foolish. Im glad I live in a country where someone with his intelligence level has a say in how to run a country. Remember Theo, listen to what the media says and take it for face value then vote party lines!!!
The family has a real American Treasure.
Senator John McCain is a real American Heroe.!!
The Veterans in this family will gladly support him, vote
Senator John MCCAIN.!
For all those out throwing stones at Senator John McCain. This man knows war, he served this Country the United States of America proudly, and when he was a POW  in Vietnam he suffered greatly with torture and abuse for many years and he held strong as the TRUE AMERICAN HEROE he is. I personally do not believe I could have endured 1 single year of the torture he suffered. Until you have served, suffered and paid the price for AMERICA the way he did, you should shut up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This man is a TRUE AMERICAN HEROE, I do not know Senator John McCain personally but I do know my 2 brothers who served in Vietnam, one in the Army and one in the Marines, and I know what effect that war had on them, and they were lucky enough not to be  POWS, they too are American Heroes in my book.

VOTE JOHN MCCAIN
DID ANYONE FIND OBAMA S HIP HOP HAT, IF SO HE WILL BUMP KNUCKLES WITH YOU   WAKE UP AMERICA A HIP HOP CAT WITH A PREACHER THAT HATES WHITES VERSUS A WAR HERO
The statement that 5 was the highest number of Medals of Honor is incorrect. Wounded Knee, 29 December 1890, during the Indian War Campaigns, had 18 recipients (Medals of Dishonor Campaign). 22 Medals of Honor were awarded for Anzio.. 27 were awarded for the Battle of Iwo Jima (February 19 - March 26 1945.)
This is all silly first of all nobody and I repeat nobody should ever disrespect a former POW any anyway shape or form another is The medal of honor thing is actualy irrelevant Their's alot of hero's that stories deserve a MOH but may have only recieved a silver star we should all remember that some paid the ultimate sacrifice some have returned as the walking dead, Far as the guy gettin some of it mixed up it is all history and should be honored alike the people don't have to like McCain because of his service but remember that he still did serve. So at least have the decency as U.S Citizens not to bash that as far as his politics go just remember dems don't have a long standing support of the military or its vets military support has traditional come from the republicans ie equipment, pay raises etc. so stop believing the smoke screen of politicians and get the facts. The majority of Americans ralled Bill Clinton into Presidency and he was a draft dodger. So they can do that they can leave the vets be and concentrate on how to lower gas prices and how to reunite a country that has been divided back in the 70's and even before you would never seen gas at uncontrolable rate that it is now.Think about that as far as politics being in big oil why hasn't the citizens of this country united and called for a national strike till they lower the gas prices it problably wouldn't take more than a few days to a week before relief came the Government wouldn't allow for the whole country to be shut down for long.So you see their is alot bigger issues at hand rather than bickering how many MOH have been givin out or wether McCain's playing on being a former pow. Hooah my hat is off to all who serve and for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice you will never be forgotten.
Wait, you didn't want to publicize it, so you put it on the &*#(@#% internet?!  Riiiiight.
Mike Jones is incorrect Iwo Jima had the most Medals of Honor given for a single action and I believe it was 27.
Wow, all of these blogs born of a story about a Pow/Mia wrist band. The hatred and lack of historic memory. what you all missed was that the writer was honoring his mother, for not just supporting ( Our sons, and daughters ) serving ( Our ) country. the writer was pointing out that we can all find a way to serve our nation, our veterans, and our community, and not by just writting our feelings down for others to read, but by acting, by joining others in voicing an opinion, and by working to make our country the great place we have all had the incredable fortune to have been born in to, and the freedom bought with a very high price, and should be charrished for the sacrifices these brave men and women have made so that each and everyone of us can have and pass on to our children the great place we call America.
Choosing our next leader is a task that none of us should take lightly. Choose wisley, the future of our country, and those who will carry the light of freedom ahead of the world depend on each of us making a choice for our collective future.
We are Americans, we are not just Republicans, Democrates, Black, white, hispanic, native American, Asian. middel eastern, just Americans, lets keep that thought alive. We don't need another 911 to burn it into our collective memories.
Lots of snide, rude, arrogant comments about McCain and his POW bracelet, not one of them is from a war veteran of any real action and none from a POW vet. Cheap shots from those who whine and complain, yet never have really served their country.

Yeah and before any of you commie lovers try starting in on me I served 26 years, to include Iraq. You are all a bunch of yellow cowards. Real tough talkers on websites, well that's because of people like McCain and I served to protect  those same rights for you, guess who really never served the country. Look in the mirror.
I wore one back in the 70's for Lt. Wesley D. Ratzel who's plane was downed over Vietnam in 1972.  When they finally found and returned his remains to the states I placed it at the wall, hoping that it was taken to the archives and kept as a memory of another war that should not have happened.
