'McCain' POW bracelet found in storage

WASHINGTON, D.C. –  Leon Abbott made a startling discovery while rummaging through his late mother Sarah's personal effects last December.

"She was instrumental in launching the POW/MIA movement, and it turns out the bracelet she wore was John McCain's," Abbott said in an interview. "Pure coincidence."

Sarah Abbott and millions of other Americans began wearing the copper bracelets in 1970 to draw attention to the plight of U.S. service members missing or taken prisoner in Vietnam. She wore hers until McCain and his fellow POWs were released by North Vietnam in 1973.

She met McCain briefly at a reception in Washington, D.C., for the returning POWs.

"There were many people tugging on him at the time, so they didn't really have much of a conversation," Abbott said.

After her death in 2001, her belongings were put in storage in Florida, and Abbott came upon the bracelet six months ago in a storage box.

"I was pretty amazed," he said.

Abbott, who describes himself as an independent or a Democrat, not a Republican, has never met McCain, but he's willing to give the presumptive Republican presidential nominee the bracelet, if McCain would like it.

"I suppose the initial step would be to write him a letter and see how he reacts to it, but I don't want to politicize the event, so I was kind of waiting until after the election," Abbott said.

Carol Bates Brown, who began making the POW/MIA bracelets in 1970, said there is no way of knowing how many John McCain bracelets were distributed because no records were kept.

Incidentally, Abbott's mother was not the only family member who had a brush with history.

Her father, Gen. Leon Johnson, was awarded the Medal of Honor for leading the bombing raid on the Ploesti oil refineries in World War II.

"There were actually five Medals of Honor awarded on that mission, the most of any action, ever," Abbott said. "Three of them were posthumous."

Abbott plans to present his grandfather's Medal of Honor to the Army Heritage Museum in Carlisle, Pa., in November, right about the time of the presidential election.

I respect McCant strickly for his time served however when Bush raped him last time around and McBush didn't stand up for himself, I lost all respect for him.  If you think he gives 2 turds about the vets, check out his voting record when it comes to the funding for the VA.  You will find the truth.  He voted against them every time.  Later McBush.  Obamanation will lose it for the Dems, Write in Hillary, she is the only candidate with Kahona's.
I have a profound respect for what John McCain must have went through and survived during his time as a POW it should absolutely NOT be belittled or FORGOTTEN. Thank-You to all our vets past and present for ALL the freedoms we too often take for granted.
I wonder what those bracelets are worth, on eBay.

Might be able to get one, cheap, after the election.
When I was a very young 18 year old (Who at that time didn't care much about what was going on in the world. Never watched the news or read a newspaper) I was a live-in babysitter for a few months for a woman with 2 little boys. She lived in a home just off Atlantic Avenue in Virginia Beach, Va., and her husband was a pilot in the Navy that had been shot down over Viet Nam and I believe was classified as missing in action. His wife was very involved in the POW/MIA movement and made several trips to Paris. I don't remember her name, but to this day I can still hear the sound of her crying herself to sleep every night over her missing husband she loved so much. That's a sound I will carry with me for the rest of my life. I wish I'd had his braclet. So I would know his name, or if he was ever found and came home to that woman who missed him so deeply.
god bless our vets.
our pow/mias
our service men today.
and god bless john mccain.
like him or not, he paid his dues. no, he is not the only former POW, but he is the only former POW running for president.

you klownz using the McSame moniker think you are pretty cute, eh? what about Barack bin Laden?
Would "equal time" require a story about finding a black armband with the white numbers "40,000" on it. I remember wearing one onto a WWII era diesel-electric submarine docked on the west-side of Manhattan. The guy who gave it to me to wear got into a heated discussion with the Navy CO. My grand-uncle a Master Mariner left in Jan. 1942 from nearby, captain of the "City of Atlanta" and torpedoed thereafter with two survivors of 48 by U123 in "Operation Drumbeat". War had been declared. It never was for John McCain.
I remember a small creepy group wanting "help with that bracelet", that's the way they said it.  It's good timing to bring up that subject, I was doing a little reminiscing myself.  I suppose I could now explain the answer, that they all thought was some conspiracy or something.  The "real" conspiracy is to prevent your politician from showing off his ignorance about tactical matters, I wouldn't bother with details, it's always been a problem so I'm sure
you can find better stories than mine.  McCain was
a heavily "plugged" poster child, to my recollection,
he had a diplomatic status someplace.  The story your
coppers asked for was that military actions when you have an ally to defend are legal, when you don't have to defend the ally, because all of the negotiators are here safely in the US then, offensive military op's must be defensive by law, not common sense.  Resultant, I have no experience in that area.
It would be considered murder in this country, to follow known methodology.  Thanks Copper, Joey

Operation Just Cause has an adoption program where you will get the actual incident report of when your adopted went missing and all further information available from multiple sources, including pownetwork.org

If you want to get involved in letting our current troops know you really care and want them to come home in victory, go to GatheringofEagles.org or MoveAmericaForward.org

If you want to honor a veteran, any veteran, that served with honor, support legislation that will give our wounded heroes healthcare programs they need and deserve.

Our Constitution says we will care for our troops in time of need because they protected and defended us.
Don't just use a reply box to vent. Do something that will make a difference so we can show all those who have served and those now serving and future service military that they are making a difference and we honor their sacrifice.

A NOVICE MUST NOT BE PLACED IN THE WHITE HOUSE!--------------JOHN McCAIN IS ALL WE HAVE! WE MUST HAVE ALL WE HAVE! AMERICA, AMERICA,"GOD SHED HIS GRACE ON THEE---, WE MUST CROWN OUR GOOD, WITH TRUE {BROTHER-HOOD} JOHN McCAIN IS NOT " A COUNTERFEIT BROTHER" SEARCH YOUR HEART BELOVED AMERICANS! GOLD IS NOT PURE, UNTIL IT HAS BEEN THROUGH THE FIRE OF TESTING. DO WE WANT GOLD? DO YOU WANT HAY AND STUBBLE?
It seems quite apparent that "Raven" -- voicing approval of Hillary either are ignorant to the facts or are purposely overlooking her activities when "enscounced" in the White House. When moving out she was found to have "attempted"to steal over $200,000. of White House Property but was caught in the act. It was through the efforts of Pelosi, Feinstein and some other Democrats who had the charges swept under the rug.Additionally she forced her husband to accept Janet Reno as A.G. -which he openly admitted as the biggest mistake of his life (at that time). Hillary openly derided the Secret Service Detail assigned to protect her. Any time she could she insulted them in vulgar terms and along with Al Gore made the "details" lives as miserable as she could. She is one of the most despicable, conniving and manipulating women in this country. She's already proved many times she "lies" when she can. It's bad enough that since "waltzing" into a State she has never lived in and "bragging" about what she will do --- she hasn't performed anything reelating to legislation for the good of the New York citizens. She openly admits she will rely on Chas. Schumer to handle the functions she should be concerned about. As for Barack Hussein Obama - who openly admits he will never swear allegiance to the U.S. nor will he recite the Pledge of Allegiance. AND MANY OF YOU PEOPLE WANT TO VOTE FOR HIM AS PRESIDENT AND COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF.
Yeah who cares, first thing out of her mouth i'm and independent or a democrat, and then maybe i'll write a letter to see if he reacts and then maybe i'll send it to him!  What a crock of hooey! You lib turds are all the same, feigning that we are the world until someone disagrees with you, then we are evil or idiots. I know my enemies and they are not all in the Mid-East. Americans we're supposed to be one Nation but the lib slogan now appears to be "One America, One Party" and guess what I am not included. You've made your bed now you can sleep the eternal sleep there for all I care.
How dare anyone speak negative about McCain and his POW experience.  The man didn't give up, didn't surrender nor allowed himself to be released until those with him were released.   Trust me, I was part of the debrief at Clark AFB Philippines when the POWS returned.  Any one who thinks Mccain doesn't deserve any and all honers,  need to take their cowardly self to somewhere else, we don't need you in this country.  With that type of attitude, while you have right to have, you are allowing the enemy to win this war because of it.
Some of your posts make me ill. My dad fought at Iwo Jima, I lost an Uncle in Bastone, my older brothers fought is Vietnam, and I was there in Kuwait 91. Where were you? Sitting on your butts complaining about some Politician. Where do you think your rights come from? Magically appeared? Our leaders are not perfect nor are the solierS and sailors that follow their orders. Your rights to speak your mind come from men like McCain. Forget about his politics and remember that he went where you were to afraid to go. I suggest you put on a pair of jump boots and try it for one day. I expect you will not have the fortitude to go 72 hours without sleep or will miss your late' to much. Wimp.
Let's use spellcheck..or let someone proofread your post before you post it, okay people?
People tend to bash the current president, but don't really know what THEY would do if they had the responsibilities he has. NOR do they know the pressure he is under when he makes these decisions. I may not agree with all he does, but I do respect the office of the President.  We don't have any tremendous choices in the upcoming election- truth be known.  May the best MAN win.
my Dad served in Korea and 2 tours in Vietnam; do I consider John McCAin a hero?  HELL NO!! The men like my Dad, who did the grunt work and didn't look for praise are the true heroes!!
You have to admire this guy for being willing to give McCain the bracelet rather than auctioning it off on Ebay.
Amen, Mr. Brett Oxley!  I also was in Iraq during Desert Storm.  My 4 years pales compared to your 26.

Does anyone remember the "Sound Bite?"  Where the news edits stuff to keep it short?  It's VERY possible that the quote went on to qualify "during the Vietnam (non)war."

If you READ the blogs, you'll see that the battles listed as having more Purple Hearts are during other conflicts.

As a Sioux, I thank Andi Wolos for qualifying Wounded Knee as a "medal of dishonor" campaign.

I fully agree with those who say that you shouldn't dis a vet for his service.  The are what makes America great.  (Coming from one of the three tribes hurt most by American soldiers during the Indian conflicts.  Do you see the irony?)

McCain has my full support, as do many of the vets voting now.  You can be sure WE will vote on election day.  We paid the price for the right, while you armchair debaters haven't EARNED the right to dis one of us!
I am so sick of reading the political bashings on a story that has very little to do with politics.

So you dont like McCains politics? I dont either. But I'm not gonna sit here and bash him on a story that is supposed to be about remembering our veterans.

I am just thankful to all the veterans and currently serving members of all of our military... b/c without them I wouldn't be able to sit here and state my opinions... and neither would any of you.
No matter  if you are a Republican or a Democrat you should be ashamed to talk that way.   John McCain went through hell for this country for five and a half years and deserves at least your respect.  At least I KNOW that he is an American, not so sure about the other.  Sorry but I just want proof that I have not seen.
I still have my POW bracelet. I have a photo and letter from a relative as well. Maj. David Holmes never came home. RIP to all those who gave all for America.
To dj in SoCal, my father also served in Korea and did 2 tours in Viet Nam (Marine Corps Recon no less), and I served in the Corps at Beirut and Grenada out of North Click.  Where did YOU serve??  Before you slander another's service and committment you need to have some basis to do do from personal experience!  John McCain IS a hero you dolt!
I have Maj James McGarvey/MIA in 1967/I have had the bracelet for 36 years.  MIA VietNam.  Seems like only yesterday.  I am no relation to him.  Just bought the metal bracelet at Camp LeJune NC in August 1971.  Wore it for many years.
As a Viet Nam vet I saw the effects that President Carter had on the military...and they were NOT good! Underfunding that led to many qualified Soldiers leaving or being forced to leave...that is the legacy of a Democratic Administration...I was denied my VA Benefits as a direct result of Carter's edicts to the VA and saw the effects of Republican Presidents/Congress' as opposed to Democratic Presidents/Congress' and I for one cringe at the thought of another Non-serving person running for President...I ask myself how can anyone vote for a person that did not care enough for our Country to serve? Any veteran makes a better potential candidate that one who did not serve and that is a fact! Once again Dem Elitists have nominated a waffling, whinning candidate and rather than disclose his records and background they try to vilify the other candidate...I may not like all of Presidents Bush's policies or McCain platform but they have both shown their commitment BEFORE running for office and this speaks volumes about their integrity...Where is that same commitment and integrity from the other candidate? We might not all agree with McCain but his background (both militarially and Politically) is far and away better than his rival... Remember this in November
Gosh...there are sure a lot of angry, bitter, unhappy  people out there! Everyone needs to get a grip and learn to live happy, no matter what your situation is.
An interesting story that seems to have woken up both the "McCain is a hero, vote for him" and "McCain is trading on his past, DON'T vote for him" camps.

I respect and honor all of those who serve in the military, so many thousands have died (and are dying) some honorably for a noble cause, some (unfortunately) for no reason other than a politician's hubris and self-aggrandisement.

The POW/MIA movement was a way of expressing support and gave comfort to the families who had to wait so long to find out the destiny of their loved ones.

Today, once again, fine young Americans are fighting and dying many thousands of miles from home, some come back safe and sound, some are damaged in mind and body and some will never return.
We should resolve that in future only when the people, through their representatives in Congress approve the need for armed intervention should we again put our Forces into harm's way and reiterate that the branches of our government are equal, that checks and balances mean something and that the Executive Branch is NOT a Supreme Power.
I placed my bracelet on my wrist 2-24-72, my MIA is Capt. Gordon Hill (USAF) lost 6-30-70. There is a presumptive finding of death. I will remove it when I go to the wall.
I am writing a book about how to take the "high road" and just from the comments to this news article it's very interesting to see examples of people taking the "high road" as well as the "low road."

What's even more interesting is that we don't even realize when we say and do things that show others we are on the "low road."
Freedom of speech: A gift to the many, earned by the 'few'. McCain has done the hard yards, more than can be said for some of his detractors. Cheap shots from their keyboards indicate a safe upbringing with lack of active military service. To those I say; Do a 'tour' then mouth off!!!!
During a recent move, I came across the POW bracelet I bought in 70 when I was 12. I had forgotten the soldier's name and intended to look it up on the 'net to return it if he was still alive or return it to his family. I found that I have John McCain's bracelet and it's in mint condition. Approx. 5 million of those bracelets were sold. Of course, there would have been many with McCain's name on them but it's still a rare treasure to me. Even though I was very young when I wore it, everyday I prayed for and thought about the POW who was completely unknown to me at the time. I've always felt that those of us who wore those bracelets carried a bit of the pain of the soldier in captivity. My hope is to return it to him because that's the least I can do. It belongs to him after all; I just kept it safe for a while.
I am also the owner of a John McCain POW-MIA bracelet. I bought it in 1971 or so and wore it for three years.  I watched him get off the plane when he returned, thankful that he was alive and hoped my prayers helped.
