Purple Heart soldiers question war coverage

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A few days after the New York Times published a story detailing network reporters’ concerns about war coverage, three soldiers wounded in Iraq expressed a dim view of how they see the war depicted on television.

"You always hear about the explosions or people being killed, but you never really hear about how the people are being helped, or how much they appreciate it," Spc. Hein Tran, 28, of Milpitas, Calif., said after receiving a Purple Heart today at Walter Reed Army Medical Center for wounds suffered May 10 in an explosion northeast of Baghdad.

Pfc. Alex Knapp, 22, of Shelby Township, Mich., who lost both legs in a roadside bombing on March 14, agreed with Tran.

"It's a little on the negative side because all we really hear about are deaths and injuries," Knapp said.

Sgt. Francis Collins III, 24, of Laurel, Md., also wounded by a roadside bomb, said some things are accurately depicted on television, other things aren't.

"Sometimes it's dramatized, sometimes it's not enough, as far as what they show on TV," Collins said after being awarded his Purple Heart.

Some journalists would agree. Earlier this month, the New York Observer published an article in which many journalists who cover the war expressed frustrations about the difficulties of getting their stories on air or in print. "There’s a marked drop-off in the appetite for stories from Iraq," ABC News correspondent Terry McCarthy told the Observer.

Lara Logan, CBS News’ chief foreign correspondent, spoke during a recent appearance on The Daily Show of her frustrations, saying, "If I were to watch the news that you hear here in the United States, I would just blow my brains out because it would drive me nuts."

As the war continues into its sixth year, the amount of time the three network evening newscasts dedicate to covering the war has dropped significantly. Six months into the year, albeit one featuring a heated political campaign, the three network evening newscasts have devoted 181 weekday minutes to coverage of the Iraq war, compared to 1,157 minutes during all of 2007, the New York Times reported.

"For the most part, it gets as much attention as it's going to get," Collins said after today's Purple Heart ceremony at Walter Reed.

Knapp has noticed a waning interest in the war, but he is philosophical about it.

"It happens over time," Knapp said. "People have got to move on and think about other things. We don't forget about it."

Tran thinks the public's main concern is bringing the troops home, a position he supports.

"It is time for us to come home, and I truly believe that," Tran said. "I think Iraq can hold its own right now if we were to leave."

Regardless of the public’s attitude toward the war or the media’s interest in covering it, the soldiers say they don't feel unappreciated.

"There's not a day that goes by that someone doesn't come by and say ‘thank you’ and shake my hand, and I'm really appreciative of that," said Tran.

"I believe they show great gratitude for what happened to me," said Collins.

"We just really want them to remember the ones who didn't get to come home," said Knapp. "That's who we are thankful for."

Aww I wish I could've been there for my buddy Tran. Its time for our men to come home. I want my boyfriend back, I want my friends back. Enough is enough and 5yrs is way more than enough. But at least it's nice to hear a good story about the war for once. IM SO PROUD OF YOU GUYS AND YOU TOO TRAN! 2-22 A. CO :o) You guys are forever my heros!

Excellent story - you've hit the mark.  There is very substantial work being done, and unreported, by our soldiers, diplomats and citizens in Iraq - America should be proud, and should know about it.  About time you got some balance, NBC. Actually made me pause from going over to foxnews website.
There is no doubt that our Military has saved a hopeless situation in Iraq.  They must be proud of their service.  Although I do not approve of the war I will forever approve of the soldier who takes the orders.  I also remember the soldier here at home responsible for this front.
AS A VIET-NAM VET. I CAN FEEL FOR OUR TROOPS OVER SEA'S. THE U.S.MEDIA NEVER DID LIKE TO REPORT THE
TRUTH ABOUT OUR MILITARY AND THE GOOD THINGS WE HAVE
EVER DONE.THERE COULD BE 100,000 GOOD DEEDS ACCOMPLISHED IN ONE DAY AND ONLY ONE MISS DEED, AND
THE MEDIA WILL SPEND A WHOLE WEEK ON REPORTING THE
ONE MISS DEED.
PERSONALLY AS BEING REFERRED TO AS A BABY KILLER OF
VIET-NAM FROM JOHN KERRY, I DON'T PAY MUCH ATTENTION
TO WHAT EVER THE MIDIA HAS TO SAY. AS FOR ME I KNOW
PERSONNALLY WHAT OUR TROOPS DOES OVER SEAS AND I'D
LAY DOWN MY LIFE IF NEED BE TO FOR THEM AS I KNOW  THAT THEY ARE DOING FOR ME.
THIS MAY NOT BE PUT ON LINE, BUT IF IT IS, I WOULD LIKE TO GIVE MY THANKS TO EVERY AMERCIAN TROOPS THAT ARE IN OUR MILITARY AS WELL AS TO THEIR FAMILIES AND LOVE ONES.
I'LL END BY SAYING AMERICIANS BETTER WAKE UP, FOR IF WE SHOULD HAPPEN TO LOSE OVER SEAS, WE BETTER HOLD ON TO OUR GUNS HERE AT HOME.
AND MAY GOD, OUR GOD, BLESS AMERICIA

The liberal, left-wing press will only report what is politically useful to the liberal, left-wing politicians they support.

The successes coalition forces in Iraq have enjoyed over the past few months are not fully reported simply because they do not serve the purposes of left-wing politics.
It is good that the US appreciate the members of its Armed Forces and treat them well. In the UK its is different. No uniforms in public,I miss them. The wounded are treated in overcrowded, old fashioned dirty hospitals. In this country entering hospital can be life threatening. These young people are the best of their generation but are being wasted in wars that, being honest, are not supported by the population. The politicians have lost the respect of the people who would prefer to be somewhere else. Can you please invade us. If you come via Calais/Dover[Ferries run every hour] you should have no problems with immigration, unless you are British.
It's just so sad that the mainstream media has degraded to editorializing rather than reporting the news (MSNBC leds this process.). The whole country grieves over our loses and injuries in Iraq, but, the media refuses to report the "news" coming out of Iraq today. That news is of a war that has freed a country of a cruel, murdering dictator who led an invasion into Kuwait and supervised the rape and murder of innocent civilans.

The world is a better place without Saddam. I saw pictures of the Bagdad airport, recently. It looked like it could have been an airpot in the U.S.. Why is the media not showing us this news. The media bashes the Bush administration for taking away our civil rights. But, the media is attemting to brainwash us by just showing us bad news. It's "1984" in reverse.

Can the media just report the news. We have loved ones serving in Iraq, do them justice by showing the world what we've accomplished. It's the best way to move on and put this war behind us.

An independent voter in NH
the only positive news on the war on iraq that i wanna see is "troops coming home"...

everything else is friggin propaganda...

I have seen evidence of the liberal media's outright ignoring, misrepresenting or omitting the news and the power that the USA has exerted in stopping Terror.  As I heard my son who is in the USAF comment, "Mom, we do it to keep Terror over here and protect those back home, here people were terrorized everyday, safety is something we as Americans at home take for granted until "911" which is something I will never forget."  Start reporting the news with accuracy, start showing what it is "we" are fighting for and never forget those that made the ultimate sacrifice for us all.
The Middle Easterners are in awe of America the United States. LET'S SEE THE GOOD WE ARE CREATING IN THE MIDDLE EAST. IT'S A POLITICAL THING WHY WE DON'T AND IT NEEDS TO STOP.  AMERICANS STAND UP AND DEMAND TO KNOW WHAT GOOD IS BEING DONE WITH YOUR TAX DOLLARS.

Thought of crime is not in there minds because of their punishment for crimes, it's their culture.  What we see are the bad guys who are just like are gangs here, and the people who commit crimes here are just as bad.  How many die here in America the great on the streets due to drugs and crime?  More than in the war.  It is time declare victory and bring our soldiers home.  THE MEDIA IS CREATING NEGATIVITY CREATED BY OUR GOVERNMENT MAKE A STAND. We helped them become democratic and that in itself manifested victory for everyone. Let's not forget the ones who died and everyone involved who will be somewhat changed for life.  War does not go away after you come home, it is a life altering experience.  Our heroes who died for this cause no longer suffer, but let me tell you the heroes rotating in the Middle East every year will never be the same, there whole thought process changes after a war experience. These people are normal people who go to the park and play with their kids, go shopping for groceries to prepare meals, just let them have their culture and don't try to change them.  Most of the war crimes committed ther now are normal people that hate us being there, it is time we come home.  We can help everyone without shoving our culture on them, they love their culture just like we love ours.  Money makes people greedy and I see in the future a more simple world order. ONE PERSON CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
I don't really want to make my comment political, but if both parties had supported our troops from the beginning, this war would have ended long ago with the victory we desperately need.  It is time for our country to forget party lines and come together as a unified population to support and honor our troops as they put it all on the line for us.  The war on terror knows no boundaries and is being made much more difficult by those who disparage our troops simply because they harbor such hate for our President.  They should be ashamed (but they are not).
Having served 3 tours in Iraq I would like to make this comment. To all of those people who choose to make negative comments on how myself, those that came before, and those that will come after, dont make a difference. I tell you what. Grab a rifle and stand post, maybe then your I will consider what you have to say.
THE NEWS is nothng but headlines ,not the day to day things.  The profit is only headlines the truth of day to day life.  The good old days was about the news not the money.
Since the First Gulf Warand prior wars since Viet-nam, Media has always been biased for the most part and plainly not believable... I have seen/read instances which simply are not true during Desert Storm which never ceases to anger me when I read and remember otherwise. Those Soldiers hit it on the head...Media are just plain liars...
Semper Fi...
I have just finished reading every post on the blog.  While most were positive, there are a few that really illustrate just what an influence the media is on gullible American people.  Comments such as "the only positive news on the war on iraq that i wanna see is "troops coming home"... everything else is friggin propaganda... " and "We wouldn't having to rebuild the country...If we had not blown it up" and especially this one "I think I must be the only one in the USA who doesn't believe that our soldiers have done anything for me by fighting in Iraq. They are not fighting for Americans' freedom or security, they are fighting for the ambitions of a madman, much as Hitler's soldiers did for him. " make me cringe to the core of my being.  These people think the war on terror is just the "War in Iraq", but they are completely wrong.  Iraq is just where it is now being waged.  If not there, it would probably be here.  Islamic terrorists know no compassion and don't care whether you are Democrat, Republican or other.  They just hate Americans and want to kill us.  Those who do not understand that are aiding their own impending destruction.  I hope they wise up and see what is really at stake instead of blindly following political party lines and believing the political talking points as being truth.
I think it's unfair to expect reporters to report more "on the ground" stories when it's impossible for them to move around the country.  Most of them hole up in the green zone, or venture out deeply embedded with units on the go; this pretty much limits their ability to get the "real story".  Please bear in mind that the occupation of Iraq is the deadliest combat in history, at least for journalists:  more than 200 killed in just six years.
John Rutherford's story is so wildly deceptive as to rise to the level of the best propaganda money can buy.

For example, Rutherford cites Laura Logan as supporting his claims when, in fact, Logan's critique was that the US media won't run stories about how BADLY the war in Iraq is going.

The following is a summary of how the US occupation of Iraq has impacted Iraqis themselves. When reading the following numbers, bear in mind that as of the US invasion of Iraq there were roughly 25 million Iraqis living. Following each Iraqi figure I have also provided figures to illustrate how those Iraqi figures would translate into American casualty figures given that the US population, a little over 300 million, is about 12 times that of Iraq.

In 2004 a statistical survey published in the British medical publication The Lancet suggested Iraq death tolls were wildly higher than acknowledged. In a second survey by the same authors the death toll had ballooned to ~650,000. (US: 7,800,000 killed)

Those numbers were later validated:

"The British polling firm Opinion Business Research (ORB) asked 1,720 Iraqi adults last summer if they had lost family members by violence since 2003; 16% had lost one, and 5% two. Using the 2005 census of 4,050,597 households in Iraq, this suggests 1,222,580 deaths since the invasion. Accounting for a standard margin of error, ORB says, "We believe the range is a minimum of 733,158 and a maximum of 1,446,063." [from "What is The real Death Toll In Iraq", UK Guardian, March 19, 2008]  (US:  8,797,896 to 17,352,756 killed)

Assuming a standard ratio of dead to wounded in combat ( 1:3 ) that would indicate that roughly two million to four million Iraqis have been wounded during the US occupation. (US: 24 million to 48 million wounded)

The United Nations High Commission on Refugees estimated, in mid 2007, that 4.2 million Iraqis had been forced out or their homes during the conflict; two million were internally displaced within Iraq, 2.2 million had fled Iraq. (US: 50.4 million refugees - 24 million internal refugees, 26.4 refugees who had fled the US into Canada and Mexico)

On December 15, 2007, the official Iraqi government Anti-Corruption Board reported that by Iraqi government statistics there were five million Iraqi orphans. (Assuming, per the statement below, that the bulk of those were orphaned during the US occupation, let's put, VERY conservatively, that number at 3 million, so -  US: 36 million orphans at least, and ranging up to perhaps 48 million)

Iraq's Minister Of Human Rights Wijdan Salem Mikhhail obliquely laid blame, stating that the astoundingly large Iraqi orphan population "is one of the most passive things that grew immensely during the past few years due to destructive wars and unbridled violence in the country to unprecedented heights."

To sum things up, as of Iraqi casualty/refugee/orphan nunbers were at LAST YEAR here's how those numbers were to translate into American terms:

8.8 million to 17 million dead
24 million to 48 million wounded
50.4 million refugees
36 million to 48 million orphans

The 2004 Iraqi death toll survey, published in the UK Lancet, indicated that the majority of Iraqi deaths were NOT from terrorism (road bombs for example) or caused by US ground troop fire: actually, the majority of deaths were caused by USAF air strikes.

Mr. Rutherford's story embarrasses not only himself but also MSNBC.

I am  senior and want to thank all the soldiers fighting to give people their freedom. Also for stopping the terrorist on their own soil.We dont need the likes of them in a peaceful country.
Sadam was a vicious dictator who tortured, gassed and beheaded the people of Iraq.  There are accounts of him killing his own family members.
Freedom is now being spread across Iraq and Afganistan.
Do I like war?  NO!  However, I dislike events like
911 even less.
I support our troops;  and, I support the idea of
freedom for all.
It takes time for a new idea to take root and grow in the hearts and minds of a large social structure such as Iraq and Afganistan.  History shows that it usually
takes a generation or two.
MSNBC, please,  more 'articles' ( reporting ) like this. The ones to whom we should be listening are the people who are 'over there'.
They are the story.
Why must we always be inundated with the negative all the time? People really don't want to see that. Because of all the negative things they put on TV it is no wonder we have become a nation of cynics. Negativity only brings more negativity. I say show them we don't want to see this crap anymore and turn the damn tv off. Get out and volunteer somewhere and help out your community with acts of kindness. Kindness also is contagious! Show our vets that we really DO appreciate what they have done for us. These guys deserve to be appreciated. A lot of them didn't ask to be sent there. They were only doing what their country asked of them. It was their duty and they did it with Honor! Some of them made the ultimate sacrifice for us. They should be given the utmost respect! Think how you would feel if they were your family members? Yes, mistakes may have been made, but we are all only human. Humans make mistakes. The president is not a God, he is a man, just like us. He makes mistakes too. He has regets too. He can't go back and do it over. We all learn from our mistakes. I don't like what he did either, but we shouldn't think that someone else in his position would have done any different. You don't know what you would do if you would have been in the same situation. I would not want to be in his position for any amount of money. Yes, it IS time to bring our troops home, but is it going to happen, probably not, but let's not forget them. We want to hear about them, but not all the negative things. Give us something to be proud about, like these stories. These guys deserve it!!!
HEy fernando,  oink oink.  an "illegal" war ?  Congress approved it.  Perhaps you are thinking of YOUR people's "illegal" occupation of the US OF A .....   When the congress and senate vote to do something, it happens.  Where were you on 9/11 ??  I bet waving a flag at the Rio Grande, not in New York or DC or Pennsylvania.  I work in the intelligence community, you have NO idea what you are talking about.  NONE.  If you were as passionate about keeping illegals out of this country as you are concerned about an "illegal" occupation, we'd ALL be better off.  GET REAL
LG  .........

WHAT?????   culture ?   declare victory and bring our troops home ?  shouldn't there be a victory first, with an Iraqi led government that can stand on its own.  Or perhaps, if we take your tack, we should leave and let their culture save them.  The ONLY stabilized area in the entire country is Baghdad, within the walls that the US protects.  People FLOCK their to get away from the murdering that comes from their OWN people.  THat is their culture.  They lop off heads and limbs, blow themselves up.  As you see it, that only happens because WE are forcing our culture on them ?  It happens in Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, etc........  These people will be fighting or having violent conflict long after we're gone as they were for hundreds of years before we got there.  Their culture is " your grandfathers grandfather disrespected mine, so YOU MUST DIE>  It's no worse than gang violence here, except OUR gangs are punks that would never kill themselves to make a point.  WAKE UP AMERICA.  If we're not fighting it there, we'll be fighting it here when they figure out we've gone.  You think BIn Laden isn't just waiting for us to quit chasing him so he can relax and plan his next HUGE attack on our soil??  WAKE UP AMERICA.
Does anyone even know why we are in Iraq in the first place?  No disrespect to those that are following orders, I am in no way stating anything negative about our troops.  I am concerned however, with those calling the shots.

WMD's?  A lie.
Bin Laden? Not in Iraq.
The cruel and inhumane treatment of the Iraq people by their leader?  Happens all over the world, why are we so concerned about Iraq?

Our government needs a serious overhaul.  You are not seeing as much media coverage of the war because the American people were putting pressure on George W. and his "popularity" was going down the toilet.  (What is this High School?)  Now that its not being pushed down your throat and its being put through a filter, he is more acceptable and able to pretty much do what he wants with the end of the term.

Just what I think.
Since 9/11 when our country lost 3000 of our citizens the news media has tried to make the point that we deserved it because we (the American people) some way provoked the attack.  The media could not show the people jumping to their deaths off the burning buildings for fear that we Americans would have our emotions heightened and our anger aroused toward those that had created the scene.  We could not see the beheadings of the americans captured in Iraq.  We see almost nothing of the atrocities done by Sadam and his henchmen to his own people.  They do report anything they can find or fabricate that is negative about our country and service men and women.  They portray our country as a war mongering military bully that forces it's will over the rest of the world.  President Bush has made decisions that have protected our country for the past 7 years!  Who on 9/12 would have believed that our country would not have had another successful terrorist strike in the the next few days, months, or year?  President Bush has succeeded by keeping the terrorists occupied in Iraq and Afghanistan.  We Americans should regret every lost life of our brave fighting men and women, but there is a job to be done that only they can do.  It is a dangerous job for which they are trained and know the risks.  They protect our country by blowing things up and killing people that are intent on killing us, just for being Americans.  That is their job.  They and President Bush deserve our respect and thanks for all they have done to keep this country safe for the past 7 years.  There is a larger percentage (than I would like to think) of Americans that are ungrateful for what we have in this great country.  All the while, the winers and nay sayers  live their lives in peace and tranquility.
The Media, just like water, seeks its own level. Meaning, on average, it is centrist (with a few waves sloshing in different directions).
The reason deaths and injuries are reported first and foremost is so that Americans can gauge how the wars is going in human terms. It is the American voting, tax-paying citizenry's job to pay attention to what is going on in Iraq. Yes, soldiers do good things for the civilians. This is the time-honored tradition for the U.S. (or at least our perception if not always the historical truth). We expect them to be honorable in the line of combat duty. But, that is not the point.

No amount of civilian-relations work by the troops changes the fact that a large voice in the U.S. originally said "Don't Go! We have a mission already at hand! Do that job first and do it well!" -- and, an even larger voice is saying, "Bring them home!"

Now we are out on a limb, without even a pretense of a graceful exit strategy. The calculations of the Bush administration were dead wrong on Iraq. We are making progress, somewhat -- on a problem *we* caused: the problem of the insurgency.

If you blame the media, you blame the American populace. This is not a PR contest, it is a real life,  grave blunder.
I beleive as a Vietnam Vet. that these troops are doing a lot of good to help Iraq and the citizens of that country. All we hear at home is the negative side of this war. I can only hope that the American people have learned something from the Vietnam War and how we were treated when we came home. Way to many Americans take freedom as a God given right. For all the troops serving our country, everywhere  THANK YOU!
Thank you troops for all the good you have done.  Thank you for all your sacrifice to keep the bad guys from winning this country over to them.  For keeping the people of Iraq free. If Iraq falls to a repressive regime all will be lost.  The bad guys will prosper and the common people will be repressed again.  We must win this war. Our goodness will never be forgotten amongst the common people and children.  Who has built the schools, who has allow the young girls to be free and recieve an education.  Who has shown kindness to the common people there.  The American and British troops will always shine to these people regardless of the media's slant coverage that is for their own selfish agenda.

I am speaking as a man who received his Purple Heart at the age of seventeen during the Korean Conflict.  I served my country for over twenty years and retired as a Sergeant First Class (E-7) after five tours in Viet Nam.  During this time my wife endured all the mental anguish of not knowing if she would ever see her husband again. The constant delivering of telegrams of those GI's KIA (VIA Local Cab Companies)
took there toll on her.  The constant rallies by those opposing the Viet Nam War ony made her life more mentally fatigued.  She raised our four children and continued to support me with letters of love and devotion.

Today, I am serving her, for she is to ill to walk over 20 feet without needing her oxygen.  I was not able to become wealthy enough to truly show her a life free of debt or hardtimes.  Now with us being in our seventies it is evident I never will.  However, she has never asked for a better life.

The moral of this story is that, she deserved my Purple Heart and so I am having in reenscribed with her name on it.  She as well as all the wives and familes of our service personnel suffered the pains of all our wars. We need to respect them for there
lost love ones set aside one day each year in there
honor.  God Bless America.
I want to comment on some ignorant guy who left a message saying that were there in Iraq because of some madman.I'm an american veteran of OIF 3 and this message is for Pablo Crus. First off, if you dont like america, go back to where you came from, second, dont listen to everything you here on the news from stupi reporters who love to only show the worst part of the story. Third, I've been there and we helped out so many Iraqi families providing water, food, toys, and clothes. Giving them Jobs as translators for US troops. We have helped that country. Unless you have something constructie to say or you want to volunteer, shut your mouth Pablo Crus and anyone else who is ignorant on the facts of the war.
The reason the interest is down becuase it is not reported on.  Where is the interst if things are going well?  As stated by the soldiers, even at the height of the coverage the vast majority of the report were to critize and degrade not to highlight the sacrafices and the positive outcome of those sacrafices.  Unfortunatley there are no Edward Marrows or Earnie Pyles today, only those who care about making a name for themselves at the cost of others.
The drive - by - media is not covering the war because things are improving in Iraq on many fronts and the media doesn't want you to know that.  The benchmarks that the democrats have set are being met, even though Pelosi and company keep moving the goalposts to make it look like we are never winning.  The job isn't finished, but if you look at casualty, violence and rebuilding statistics, Iraq is actually more safe than some American inner cities.
In the 1966 movie The Green Berets,a Special Forces Master sergeant says to reporter David Janssen"Newspapers, you could fill volumes with what isn't written in them".Janssen replied"That's very often true ,Sergeant'Some things never change.
If you want to see the worst defeat for the US in history, then don't forget to vote for Osama Obama.  This liberal Democrat does get it.  He will make Jimmy Carter look like Abraham Lincoln.

Like Bush or not, he stop Saddam Hussein and said "enough" to the radical Islamic extremeists.  Yes, we are winning the war in Iraq but the Democrats can still lose it if the US puts Osama Obama in the White House.
Right on. With things in Iraq getting better these guys deserve some stories about things that go well. Negative stuff always draws coverage in any area, but a look at what has gone well is something that is nice to see, after all millions of people have a chance at freedom now! :)
This headline does not surprize me. As you see the press coverage is never in favor of the soldier. We learned that in Viet Nam. No war is popular, but the press aids the enemy by giving negative and slanted views, regardless of our American soldier. Reporters made names for themselves when they reported on the Viet nam war. Some did so by mis representing the truth.
Anyone that thinks we are "winning" the war in Iraq is delusional. As to our "helping" the Iraqi's, I wonder what the 100,000 plus dead and millions forced from their homes would say about our "help". Face it, we want to help ourselves to their oil. We will kill as many of our soldiers and their people as it takes to get it. I respect the sacrifice of American servicemen, but please, no BS about it being for freedom, they fight and die for their comrades and because it is what they trained to do just like soldiers have always done.
I was on a convoy mission in Iraq, providing security as a gunner on top of an armored Humvee, the convoy that was in front of us encounted a small IED (improvised explosive devise) and the rest of the convoys were halted. My convoy was stuck in the middle of a market in a city; I had performed a visual inspection of the area to ensure there were no hostiles, and it was very peaceful. The people were buying fruit, clothing, food, all kinds of good stuff. I eyeballed a watermelon vendor, selling watermelons from the back of his truck; I smiled nodded my head in respect, he did the same. Fifteen seconds later he approached my truck with 2 watermelons that he was giving us as a gift! I got out of the truck and traded a couple of bottles of water and gatorade for the two watermelons. He was so amazed, he went back and gave me two more!

Regardless, I got in trouble for leaving my armored truck and trading with a local vendor. After being yelled at my commanding officer, we ate the best tasting watermelon the both of us ever had!

This my friends, is an honest to God true story! This is happening all over the country. Not just a small incident. I will never forget that day or that person!

To the media, please report more of these stories!
I have tons more for you guys!

Really interest reading about those who think our volunteer armies should just pack up and come home.

We have had too fight all over the world and still not had to fight in cousin joe's back yard or aunt jane's orchard. People should be thankful for that situation but aren't smart enough to realize it.

Maybe we should bring all the troops back to the United States and have battles in our streets.
Would people really be ok with that. I THINK NOT>
the press has always been one-sided in their coverage of the war. They are and have been against it. The moment things started going bad for the US—i.e. getting difficult—they almost gloated with pleasure. That's when we were treated to their idea of war coverage: reports on bombings by insurgents and the casualties that resulted. The surge has changed the situation in Iraq. It's made a monumental difference and has now turned the tide, giving the Iraqi's and their government the upper hand. The insurgency is ebbing. But now that the US has the upper hand, the American press refuses to give the Iraq war anything near the attention they once showered on it. Good news from Iraq is not worth their time. Because it isn't in line with their fairly obvious agenda. Members of press and their outlets have behaved despicably over these past few years. If their actions aren't un-American, they are at the very least unethical and immoral. Their iraq War coverage will leave a stain on their reputations they will carry with them throughout their careers—which I pray will be deservedly short.
I've given up on ever hearing the positive stories from Iraq. The media is not just showing one side, they are actively burying the other side. Some books have some out about the real story. But news about positive current events cannot be found. Interviews with soldiers who have good news to report are non-existent.
The whole argument that only negative news sells is a lie. I think people are starving for good news. I have had to cut of news because they are so depressing.
I noticed someone mentioned Britney Spears. I get so sick of hearing about all the stupid mistakes the stars make and it's splashed all over the news. No wonder there are so many young people getting pregnant. Look at all the "role models" they have. I mean like HELLO!!! have the stars ever heard of contraception? And they're in and out of rehab all the time and out there driving like crazy. And it's not just the young ones. You hear about older ones in their 30's getting pregnant and then getting married. I love hearing stories from the troops in Iraq that prove there are some good things happening there. All you people out there that keep bashing Bush need to get a grip. I'm not saying he is the best president we've had, nor is he the worst, but I do have 2 military kids. My son is 27 and was in Iraq from April '03 to April '04. He's still having problems with PTSD. I've had more than one person tell me that the cocktail of drugs you get when you go to the VA for help can kill you. My son tried to cope with things on his own for a long time and finally decided to get help last year. He checked himself into the mental ward because he was zoning out and hearing soldiers scream in his head and having thoughts of hurting himself and he was put on anti-depressants and sleeping pills. They sent him home with 3 different kinds of sleeping pills and anti-depressants. It would have been really easy for him to have taken too many. I thank God that he didn't. I have a 23 year old daughter that is currently serving in Iraq. I know from talking to her that they get tired of hearing the negative things people say about the war or the President and she also stated that if some of the troops are pulled out too soon that it will be much more dangerous for the soldiers that are left over there. I am very fortunate to be able to talk to her on a daily basis when the Freedom Calls Center is up and running because she works there. I didn't have that luxury when my son was there. Like so many other family members I had to sit and wait and pray. The longest and hardest period was over 30 days. I also have the same sentiment as alot of other people on here. The soldiers and their families that gave the ultimate sacrifice are also my HEROES. We will be forever grateful to them. And to those that have come back injured and disabled my prayers are with you and your families because all of you have also given a great sacrifice. To those negative people out there be careful where and what you write about and also what and where you say those negative things because no matter where I go 9 times out of 10 I meet someone that either has family members or friends over there now or that have been over there. Some of the troops that are over there now joined because they are military minded and wanted to make a career out of it, but ALOT of others like my kids just wanted help to go to college and become a better person and got sucked into this war. I've heard that alot of Reservists have committed suicide because they were all out there living normal lives and got the call and were not prepared for war and just couldn't handle it. I know because my son was and still is one and he's been fighting the thoughts himself.  In closing I would like to say how much I love my two greatest HEROES, my kids, SPC Deas, Jarrod, Reservist; and SPC Deas, Lesley, Camp Taji.
gee - biased stories from the media? what a suprise! has the liberial media said anything positive about the war, GW Bush or anything else that has happened in the last 8 years? Did you hear about Obama thinking there were 57 states?? oh yea, that wasnt covered in the news...
Well, Alex Knapp is my cousin & I will never forget the day 3 months ago when his Grandmother emailed with the news that he was very critically wounded in Iraq. For the next 3 months his mom & Dad were by his side.  His mom (Jeanette) posted almost daily progress reports on Alex's surgeries & medical proceedures. These first weeks were pretty scary as Alex's put up a brave fight just to live.  Now he is doing so much better it amazes everyone who knows him. As for me, along with giving thanks & gratetude to those who are not coming back, I also want to remember & be thankful for all that Alex & the men who were wounded with him have gone through.  To me they are real heros too.
Wow, people actually seeing that they are being manipulated, how cool, reguardless of your opinions on the war being forced on you by both sides. believe tthe people who have been there not the people who sit over here and try to control what they think you should see. there are still many stories in the foriegn press supportative of america just look. The press should be unbiased, its not due to their own agenda. also 90 persent of congress believed the same as President Bush from the same scorces,And I will support whichever president that gets elected because thats what americans nnot dems or repubs should do. congress should not be allowed political parties then as americans something could be done.
It's about time that a positive story materializes.  As stated earlier, the 'mainstream' media sees fit to report the sensational, the ugly, the crash-and-burn story.  Want proof?  Just think about where you found this story: Buried on page two of a vaguely related topic in Pakistan.  Why is it not on MSN home page?  Because it seems more important to tell us about a bride's goofy wedding deal, or how to shed pounds and other mundane, unimportant drivel.  You had to DIG to find this story.  Pathetic!!

I've visited with many veterans that have served in Iraq and they all say the same thing: there are many positive stories we never hear.  They feel it has been and still is a worthy cause, in spite of some having lost friends and comrades in the process.

I hope Sen. Obama gets to visit with some of these folks in Iraq, if he ever goes there, or even to Walter Reed or any other VA facility.  Of course those visits would never make the news because it'd be counter to his campaign promises and they wouldn't fit into a 30-second media photo op and sound bite.
Just because the newsies tell us they aren't reporting the healthy upside to the Iraq war because "we are tired of it," doesn't mean they are telling the truth. We already know they lie on a daily basis. So, why not stories about America's success? The answer is simple. Liberals control the news outlets and they don't want America to win.
The media is a business that loves it's power to make public opinion. They are selling us Obama now.  The New York times publishes sensitive classified information.  Treason. Once we get the Obama then everything will be dandy. There won't be a situation comedy or cartoon show about his presidency.  We can  all go back to sleep like before 9/11.  "There were never any terrorists, Bush just made the whole thing up."  While Obama dismantles our military and starts spending our defense budget on social programs, Iran, Syria, and other rouge nations will continue to build advanced weapon systems  and then one day.......Pow!  We will then need that universal health care! How will they blame Bush then?

In my opinion a fault of the Bush administration and Congress is not educating the public about the facts concerning the war on terror.  The average American dosen't understand the war on terror or why we needed to end Saddam Hussien in Iraq.  Most people don't know how global the threat is or the progress we have made. An educated population is important in a Democracy!  Fools will vote for Obama and we will get "Change."  God help us!
During World War II the media people would be in federal penitentiaries if they reported as they have during Vietnam and Iraq. They are providing hope and encouragement to the enemies who would destroy us. They do an effective job of undermining our nation's mission in order to promote their own agendas. I have little respect for this industry. They put out largely propaganda, not honest and objective information.
