WASHINGTON, D.C. – Dawid Pietrek emigrated from Poland to the United States three years ago with dreams of a college education and a career as a police officer.

He arrived with a green card and worked as a caregiver for several elderly families in the Chicago area.

"Dawid was the best," one of his employers told the Daily Herald newspaper. "He was smart and kind and worked so hard."

U.S. Marine Dawid Pietrek was killed in Afghanistan on June 14, 2008.

Pietrek, 24, joined the Marines last year in hopes of becoming one of 40,000 foreign nationals since 9/11 to expedite their U.S. citizenship by serving in the armed forces. He was among 69,000 active duty service members born outside the United States, about 5 percent of our total military force.

Pietrek deployed to Afghanistan two months ago with the 1st Marine Division and was initially assigned to Kandahar.

"It's hot over here, about 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit)," he wrote his mother and sister back home in Police, Poland. "Our first week here, our base was attacked by rocket fire. No one was hurt."

Pietrek told his family not to worry about him, but just in case, he wrote, "If something should happen to me, remember – this was my decision."

On June 14, a roadside bomb tore through Pietrek's Humvee in southwestern Afghanistan, killing him and three other Marines in the single worst attack this year on U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

Pietrek was buried Tuesday morning at Arlington National Cemetery. His mother and sister traveled from his native Poland to lay him to rest in his adopted America.

Marine Pfc. Dawid Pietrek was the 489th casualty of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to be buried at Arlington.

Grant him citizenship, and may he rest in peace.
This story breaks my heart.  Any young man or woman that serves in our military should automatically be granted citizenship.  We have so many "Americans" that don't deserve citizneship.  Please bring our young men and women home.  The Arabs have been fighting since the begining of time.  Our young military men and women deserve better.  I am a college graduate and I doubt that I could pass the citizenship test.  Can you?
God Bless this man. He was already more of an American than many that are born here. Stand down soldier your work here is done. Our prayers and thanks to you and your family.
Would someone tell me again why were over there and what it is we are accomplishing.... other than getting our kids killed that are barely even out of highschool. So unbelieveably sad.
How heartbreaking - this young man died for the country he loved so much - and not yet being awarded his citizenship.  I hope that he will be allowed that privelege posthumously...  For hes service, for his memory, for his family.  Thank you Marine Pfc. (and HERO) Dawid Pietrek, and God Bless you...
May he rest in peace.  Thanks to him and to his family for his service and sacrifice.  My deepest and most sincere condolences to his family.
What a hero he is!  No matter that he was from Poland - his decision to become a Marine in order to become a US citizen only shows how good we have it - we, the citizens of the USA.  We know that Dawid must have been a wonderful person - to give his life, to make the ultimate sacrifice, for a country he loved and wanted to be part of.  My condolences to his family - he is a hero!
we are a blessed country to have young men and women such as Dawid admire and love America to this extent. God bless him.
GOD BLESS  HIM!!WE SHOULD ALLOW HIS SISTER AND MOTHER TO COME TO THE USA W?NO WAITING PERIOD< IF THEY WANT!!!

Oorah Marine, may you rest in peace.
Dawid believed in what he was doing and he gave his life to prove it. We have so many "Americans" with citizenship who would not do what he did it's pathetic. He now rests in the arms of his God and is at peace. Grant him his citizenship, he deserves it much more than some who already have it. His family knew what kind of a man he was, now we know. God Bless his family, Peace be with them.

This Great American Hero was awarded his citizenship yesterday during the funeral. I was honored to be at his service, quite touching. God bless him and his family.
Thank you for your supreme sacrifice David

You were more American than some born here
May God Bless your family and give them strentgh

May God Bless all of our young men and women in the service
Here is a young man, still a green card alien not yet naturalized has made the utmost sacrifice for this country. Isn't time that we grant immediate US citizenship to all volunteers for the US Armed forces & stop this xenophobic attack on our nation immigrants & demand from our govt a complete, sensible, humanitarian immigration reform?
The Dawid Pietreks of the world are what created and have sustained this country. Piece of governmental paper notwithstanding, he has already paid the highest price of citizenship. Sadly, it is exactly this cost of citizenship that is yet necessary to ensure our continued existence as the great country we are. Semper Fi and Godspeed Marine.
Ruthann, as a college graduate, you should know that "the Arabs" have not been fighting since the beginning of time (that's the lie we're told so we don't have to take responsibility for the mess we've made), and even if they had been, the people of Afghanistan where this young soldier died are not Arabs. Please stop giving us Americans and our educational system a bad name.
This story is heartbreaking but yet inspiring, here is someone that gave his life for a country that was not his, my brother is also in the Armed Forces and  was born in Honduras, yet he believes that its his duty to protect the freedom of others as a way to say "Thank-you" to a country that has now become home to our family. My deepest condolences to Marine Pfc. Dawid Pietrek and his family and friends, he is and will always be a HERO!
May you guard the gates of heaven, and your family be blessed for your sacrifice.Thank you for loving our country,PFC Pietrek
To Dawid and his family and friends,

Next time I visit my brother's grave at Arlington, Section 60, I will take the time to stop by your grave and pay my respects.

I hope my brother has already found you in heaven and greated you with a cold drink and warm smile.  Share good times and stories.  Your tour of duty is done.

God bless.
You've done more then your duty for our country and words can not tell you how much we appreciate what you did for the US. Be at ease and may you rest in peace.
The fact he wasnt awarded citizenship after saying "I'll go" is not sad at all. What is sad is that a non U.S. citizen is more willing to join the military and fight versus our own. Maybe it is because they see what we can't anymore because we have become so arrogent and elitist of the world. My hat is off to him and his family. May he rest in peace knowing that there are people in this world who recognize his sacifice. God Bless and may your family and friends remember you always. I know I will.
Any man or woman who serves in our armed forces should be granted citizenship immediately upon the completion of his or her tour of duty.  We are so indebted to these people for their heroism.  Pfc. Pietrek is an AMERICAN hero for his sacrifice and deserves to be granted immediate US citizenship in honor of his service.
I would like to say thank-you to all our young men and women who have put their lives and their family's lives on hold to perserve our Freedoms and try to bring it to all others in the world. We seem to forget about allthe other wars that other young men from other country's have fought in wars not their own. just think of the young men who came to Texas war of 1836!,WW1,WW2 and Viet Nam.So lets not forget all our HERO'S. Viet Nam Veteran
WHY ARE WE KILLING ARE YOUNG OVER THIS STUPIT WAR THAT
WE COULD FINISH IN A MATTER OF DAYS?  when we know were they are hiding Bomb the crap out of the bad guys! There will be some people that are not tje bad guys but we have to think of our own men and women frist. So get it done and show Ben Lande that we are sick of him and his group and others like it.
I salute this young Marine and his family. Having served as a Marine myself, I can appreciate his love for this country. I appreciate his integrity and sacrifice. I am sadly reminded of an incident a few years ago when I asked a high school graduate if he was joining the military. He stated that he didn't feel he owed HIS country anything. However, he didn't mind receiving grants for college from his fellow citizens.
Semper Fi, Brother.
Dawid is a hero.  Please grant him citizenship, he deserves it for his ultimate sacrifice.
May God bless him and his family , he was a very brave young man it a shame that he died for a cause that so many Americans  still disagree with. There will never be peace in the middle east.
This story broke my heart... I hope that his family will be extended citizenship on his behalf if they would desire it - even if they chose never to live here.  It's the least we could do to thank them for this incredible sacrifice.  They obviously brought a fine human being into the world.  God bless them!
I am a Canadian, and while I may not agree with current policies, one thing that one cannot doubt is the selfless sacrifice members of the armed forces from both of our countries are making every week.

Dawid, you may not have had your citizrnship, but nontheless, I welcome you as a fellow Canadian citizen.
What an amazing young man. I pray he will be well remembered and his family will know millions of American's appreciate his sacrifice.
may he rest in peace semper fi it would have been an honor to know this young man my heat goes out to his fanily i salute you brother
another casualty of a pointless war, this is just ridiculous
david is more a american than most of our politations in washington d.c.god bless you and yourvfamily david
My heart goes out to the family of this young man. Here was someone willing to lay down his life for a country that he wanted to be part of.  I wish more people in this country would use him as an example instead of people just using this country.  God bless him and remember him for what he did.
Pietrek told his family not to worry about him, but just in case, he wrote, "If something should happen to me, remember – this was my decision."

If only we could remember that soldiers serve by choice, and thank God for every single one who follows that calling.  Without them, the USA would be lost.
Godspeed, Dawid.  And thank you.
God bless you pfc Dawid Pietrek. As an american I am humbled by the sacrifice you have made.
To Porter J Portland OR
Do you not remember what happened September 1, 2001??  We didn't start this, but I pray, we will end it.  This is why our brave men and women are fighting, not because of your comments.  PFC Dawid Pietrek joined this fight even though he was probably not directly involved in the attacks on our Nation.  May God grant peace to him and his family and may we never forget the sacrifice him and others (now and in the past have made).  Semper Fi
Kind of shows the sad state of our military that we have to rely on non-American citizen soldiers to fight our wars. Reminds me of Ancient Rome and their downfall. He was a brave man and I'm sure he'll be missed.

without getting into the whole issue of the war itself,  I want to just say THANK YOU to all the service men and women and their families who are serving over there.  I spent 22 years in the service and was over there for both wars.  or what ever you want to call them.  even spent time in somolia. when any soldier dies during a conflict we all should pause and remember him/her.  They buried him in the most prestigious cemetary in the US.  The man was an American.
ALWAYS FAITHFUL Devil Dog! Now you guard the Pearly Gates! OOORAH MARINE!
You'll who think GW BUSH is a killer seem to forget (9/11/01
God Bless all our men and women.
God have mercy on his soul.  What a true hero.  I think that he and his family should be granted citizenship immediately.  If that man they call President Bush sees fit to send our men and women over to fight a useless fight so he can get richer, why not let these men and women along with their families become citizens.  If they are good enough to fight Bush's war, then they certainly are good enough to be United States Citizens.  God Bless America!

If we weren't over there they would be over here.Ithink all of you who can do anothing but bitch leave & go over to there and live  and if you stay here vote if yopu don't like whos in office.. If you vote for the jellyfish then we will live like the arabs. Power to our military there the best....
If only words can heal. But they are all that we have. May GOD bless you, your fellow Marines who paid the ultimate price & your family. Remember, FREEDOM is NOT FREE. You are all in my prayers.
This is a sad story, and the comments to it reinforce the sting all the worse.  It is a tragedy that this war is consuming lives neither Iraqi nor American - sadder still that there are citizens willing to serve that are denied based solely on their sexual preference.

Also, J Porter from Portland CT:
SHUT THE HELL UP.  Your poor spelling and grammar (plus your excessive use of caps lock) make those of us opposed to this war and Bush's policies look like utter fools.  Learn to spell and proofread.  We all feel your sentiments, but you're doing nothing but embarrassing yourself and the rest of us.
Another hero in my eyes have moved on to be with GOD, anybody willing to go to war for our country deserves instant citizenship..

Also let us bless all the Men and Women in the same cituation.  Why not give these People the Citizenship when they sign up for this NON-SENSE WAR.  PEACE AND LOVE
