WASHINGTON, D.C. – Dawid Pietrek emigrated from Poland to the United States three years ago with dreams of a college education and a career as a police officer.

He arrived with a green card and worked as a caregiver for several elderly families in the Chicago area.

"Dawid was the best," one of his employers told the Daily Herald newspaper. "He was smart and kind and worked so hard."

U.S. Marine Dawid Pietrek was killed in Afghanistan on June 14, 2008.

Pietrek, 24, joined the Marines last year in hopes of becoming one of 40,000 foreign nationals since 9/11 to expedite their U.S. citizenship by serving in the armed forces. He was among 69,000 active duty service members born outside the United States, about 5 percent of our total military force.

Pietrek deployed to Afghanistan two months ago with the 1st Marine Division and was initially assigned to Kandahar.

"It's hot over here, about 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit)," he wrote his mother and sister back home in Police, Poland. "Our first week here, our base was attacked by rocket fire. No one was hurt."

Pietrek told his family not to worry about him, but just in case, he wrote, "If something should happen to me, remember – this was my decision."

On June 14, a roadside bomb tore through Pietrek's Humvee in southwestern Afghanistan, killing him and three other Marines in the single worst attack this year on U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

Pietrek was buried Tuesday morning at Arlington National Cemetery. His mother and sister traveled from his native Poland to lay him to rest in his adopted America.

Marine Pfc. Dawid Pietrek was the 489th casualty of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to be buried at Arlington.

My Heart Goes out To His Family.Amazing he was not from here but willing to  do whatever he could for Our
Country. Some Americans could  learn from him. God Rest His Soul and help his family through their time
of Grief. I have not forgot 9/11 and President Bush
didn't drive  the airplanes into the twin towers, terrorists did.I appreciate all the Men and Women that have foughtfor Freedom and still are. God Bless them all.

Thank you Dawid Pietrek and family. Yes he chose to come to our country and seek citizenship THE RIGHT WAY, in so doing it cost him his life. Freedom is never free. He paid for our freedom. Thank you to all women and men in armed forces and your families for your sacrifice for our freedom of speech, even when it is foolishness. Shame on those who run down, talk bad about, or threaten our President. Whether you agree with him or not does not give you the right to disrespect the office that God and us voting Americans put the President in. Pray for him!
I was first going to write about Dawid's service, then I was struck by the comments made by a "college graduate" but lastly I am struck by the comments made by "J Porter" first off, go to your public library and pick up a book about our government, or step into a 6th grade civics classroom, or pick up a tape of schoolhouse rock. Our President is not the only person in charge, he gets to take the rap for it. Many Americans vote only during Presidential Elections instead of voting for Congressmen/women and Senators. Members of the House are elected for longer terms then the President! We also have families of Politicians who have been in office longer than some of us have been alive. I would agree that our President does not always represent himself in a way that can't be taken poorly, but pick up a Newspaper or get on the internet and look what other people around the world are dealing with. I feel sorry for a man who takes the blame for everything that is wrong with the country, but I really feel sorry for Dawid whose message board has been polluted with ignorance instead of honoring his memory. Be a little more positive, the world isn't ending, especially in America, Dawid died for you to run your mouth... he's not a hero, he's an American.
Soldier, I salute your sacrifice and please accept from our country the citizenship you have earned for your service. May it grant you peace in the next life. It has granted me solis in this one. Always Faithful, Marine

To all who feel this is the forum to bash the current administration, go get bent. This is not the place for that. It is to comment on this young person's love for the greatest country on Earth and how it cost him the ultimate price.
I am deeply touched by Dawid's supreme sacrifice. I am also honored to call him a fellow American. Our heros are not movie stars or sports stars or rock stars. The true heroes are people like Dawid. Your work is done Dawid. Rest in Peace.
God Bless you Dawid Pietrek. You are the stuff Americans are made from. You are the kind of Immigrant that the US wants. It sad you had to give your life, but, you died doing what you believed in. I agree, the US should grant you and your family immediate citizenship. You have earned it, and your family has, unlike the disgusting illegals that are using the US for their benifit. They have no honor.
Stand down Marine your watch is over, may God watch over you
Dawid Pietrek surely didn't give his life because he wanted to hear people bash his Commander in Chief but he did give his life so people "could" bash his Commander in Chief.Let us leave politics out of it and pay tribute to the millions of "grunts"that have served in our armed forces so we do have the freedom to denigrate this country. To all our military heroes-Thank You from a thankful veteran. To those of you that don't understand-I will pray for you.
Who is Ben Lande?

God bless you Dawid!
Dawid you are truly a hero! you know what this all started because of 9/11 but it's not even about that anymore. Our mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters are living a nightmare everyday that they are away from their familys, their homes their lives they dont deserve to be there BUSH give up your time is up admit to being the sorry peice of sh-t that you are and step down bring our familys home
Many don't remember when the USA had a large scale attack and there were 3000 people that lost thier lives and didn't choose to be put in the line of fire. Now that we have 4000 Troops (whom volenteered) killed over a 5 year period people still wounder why we are in the countries we are in. WAKE UP PEOPLE Iraq, Afgan and syria all were funding the missions just like 9/11 and everyone that is here complaining about the wars that we are fighting have never stepped foot in any of those areas to see what those govt. where doing or how they were treating there people. As for Bush he has done more for our armed forces in the last 8 years than any other president since Reagan. As a OIF Combat vetern I can say that all you people have no idea how good you have it and if you can just sit and look at numbers then how would you feel if it was your family in the twin towers on Sept 11, 2001 and had 3000+ lives taken in a few hours not a few years. I guess when President Bush stood on the ruble of the twin towers and told the entire country we would go after and destroy any country that either supported or harbored Terrorists of any kind you thought he was lying....He is the first president that has not only made the military a better place to serve he is also giving us the financial support to our families while we are doing what we chose to do. I guess the American people are not ready for a president to do exactly what he says he is going to do. We nee to Nuke Iran and finnish the Job we started to do the day after Sept 11, 2001.

SPC BEASLEY
My heartfelt prayers go to the family of this brave young man.
I feel that he should definately be granted American Citizenship even though he originally joined the military to expidite the process.  He knew what he was getting into when he signed up, he knew the risks, the challenges, and the fact that he might die for the country he loved so much that he left his homeland for it.  He is definately a better American than those who were born here that spit on the Constitution, burn our flag, and go out of their way to try to make "America" a dirty word across the world.
I know you are with God, Dawid Pietrek, He now has a very special job for you.  Good people who are so loved and love so much are turned into Guardian Angels.  I truly believe that you are now in the ranks of the Guardian Angels protecting the country you loved.
It would be so nice to be able to end both conflicts that have our military stretched to the limits - but lets look at some statistics.  In 1980, the year I signed my first contract with the Army, the Army had 16 combat divisions on active duty and 8 in the reserves.  Today there are only 10 active combat divisions - and they are doing alot more than we ever thought of in 1980!!  Before I got out of the military I got extrememly tired of hearing 'Do more with less'!  It would be impossible to complete all of the jobs that have been defined for today's military with the man-power we have under arms.  The fact that we have been so successful at all is an AWESOME tribute to the men and women who sacrifice every day to serve their country.  And remember they do it willingly and rarley ask 'why'; they do the job they are asked to do and then come back for more.

Thank you PFC Peitrek for your service!! And the rest of you who are still out there on the lines.

God bless.
RE:j porter portland ct, This is a memorial for a hero not your personal pulpit. Dispise the president all you want, that is why this man died so that you can preach you liberal bush basings but please do it elsewhere so that his family may never have to listen to a word that would even imply that he died in vane. It is quite clear that you are of the minority and those posting here simply want to honor this young mans service to the greatest nation in the world.
God bless this guys family and may he rest in peace...
This former Marine is already a true American hero in my eyes.  He gave his life in what he believed in.  His parents, brothers and sisters, I;m sure are very proud of him and what he stood for! God Bless him.  God rest his soul!
j porter portland ct
you are a worthless piece of sh~~!! How dare you call out our president...Freedom is NOT FREE, if our forefathers hadn't fought for this country we would all be part of the United Kingdom...or Russia.

Pfc. Pietrek Thank you for your service you are a TRUE AMERICAN in every sense of the word. You had more committment to this free country than a lot of our own citizens. God Bless you and your family
As a National Guardsman and Iraq Veteran,my hat is off to Dawid and his family. We've fought some wars, battled forest fires, waded through flood waters, and cleaned up after tornados. All so the jaded few can get up each morning and have the freedom to bash our great Country. I bet this young man,not even born here, never hesitated. A true lesson for us all.
Thank you and your family for your sacrifice to make our country and world a safer place for our children to live. God bless you and your family. Semper Fi!
God Bless him and all those who went before him...
and may God keep everyone else over there safe, and please bring them home soon....
I would like to DITTO the statement made by this gentleman from Alaska...May he rest in Peace!
Vietnam Veteran - Three Tours there and I never knew
why? All I was told to do was "Go serve your Country"
The fact he wasnt awarded citizenship after saying "I'll go" is not sad at all. What is sad is that a non U.S. citizen is more willing to join the military and fight versus our own. Maybe it is because they see what we can't anymore because we have become so arrogent and elitist of the world. My hat is off to him and his family. May he rest in peace knowing that there are people in this world who recognize his sacifice. God Bless and may your family and friends remember you always. I know I will.
I pray that God grants peace to his family.  Thank God for men and women who serve, I hope the soldier is granted citizenship.  If you're good enough to be a Marine and brave enough to fight and die for a country that you have adopted as your home, I beleive that you're more than qualified to be an American.
I know you probally won't publish my earlier comment, but thats okay, I made a copy of your Blog and will be sending it to Washington,DC incare of the FBI.
"It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died.  Rather we should thank God that such men lived."  Gen. George S. Patton

Thank you Dawid Pietrek!  You gave of yourself so that others might have freedoms that they take for granted!
Thank you so much Dawid, for dying for a country you wanted to call home.  I hope his family is as proud of him as I am, as a mother and grandmother I've cried and prayed for this young man, who gave so much, and asked for so little in return.  Rest in peace, Dawid.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called Sons of God.  Matthew 5:9
My deepest, heartfelt condolences to the Family and Friends of this Fallen Hero. We thank you for your sacrifice, we are a grateful nation.

"Eyes on the olive branch, but arrows at the ready."

DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

May God Bless him and his family. May God keep all of our servicemen and women safe in these times of peril.
this young men is truly an american [semper fi] brother some day i will see you at heavens gate standing tall who else would god trust the few the proud the marines ooooooorah his family should be proud of him i know i,am another fallen brother
Thank God for a true american.  Regardless of his place of birth or immigration status.  Thank you for your dedication.  He is the true meaning of AMERICAN.  God Bless you and your family.  Rest in Peace.
We are not over there because of 9/11, we are there because GWB wanted to get Hussain & he and Cheney wanted to pad their pockets. Far cry from Bin Laden and Afghanistan.  Here we are 6 years later and we STILL cannot find Bin Laden. Volunteer Military? Yeah, but no one told them they would keep going back 3,4,5 + times. And for those too lazy to scroll up, acording to Mark Collins Keedysville MD, "This Great American Hero was awarded his citizenship yesterday during the funeral. I was honored to be at his service, quite touching. God bless him and his family."  God Bless this young man, and the family he left behind.
First off He was a man whom did what the he thought was the right thing and as far as being an american yes he was and is and always will be
Lord here stands a MARINE ST Peter please open the Gates.
This is what you call a Hero. God Bless him and may he rest in peace.
God bless ALL of our service men and women. I pray you all come home soon.
As far I am concerned anybody who wears the uniform is an american. Let just judge them for what they do and sacrifice for this great country not for their immigration status.
Thank god for their service and sacrifice.
This is really sad. This young man from Europe earning his citizenship by serving in the Marines, while so many illegal immigrants are anticipating a pathway to citizenship. Sometimes you have to wonder what is happening to our country.
as I ponder the comments made by many, I wonder what really matters to all of us.  freedom is never free of sacrifice even when this country was being settled and through the years.  anyone think about why we don't have ongoing military conflicts in the usa like in other countries or even how we have been able to sustain ourselves; not by being uninvolved in others plight/imprisement.  thanks to young men like David throughout the annuls of this country's histry we do not suffer the same fate: being imprisoned.
Dziekuje Dawid, and God Bless!!
Having served in the Corps I remember other brave men who were not US citizens who died in Beirut where I served.  Another act of futility on our part I might add.  I believe this individual and ALL individuals who serve this great nation should automatically receive their citizenship.  Semper Fi...
  Dziekuje Dawid, and God Bless!
It is very sad this young man lost his life for a country he loved. What is even more sad is that people born here have no idea how great a country we live in. So many of us have never traveled outside our country or ever visited any what we call third world countries. We dont live in a country that where if you don't agree with the government they hunt you and your family down and kill or jail you. We dont live in a country there is not enough food. We do live in a country that gives you more opportunities then any other country in the world. I don't agree with how this war was handled and many mistakes were made but one thing I do know is every person no matter what country they live in should have this freedom and opportunity. These heros that have made the ultimate sacrifice understood this and were willing to pay this ultimate price for what we take for granted. I make it a habit to thank the military personnel for there great sacrifices and if I see them eating out many times will take their bill and pay it. These are the true heroes of this country not the Clintons or Obama's or Bushs or any sports figures that we seem to worship. It would be so nice if people woke up and quit all the politics and go back to what made this such a great country to begin with, welcoming all and defending the freedoms of all.
I don't care where a person lives it is the responsability of the ones that have the ability to protect those that don't. This is the main theme of the constitution! Freedom and Responsibility
Although I do not agree or support the war, we have to stand behind our boys and girls in arms. They are doing what they think is the right thing. My son will be headed over in December and it is his choice also. I pray for his safe return. I hope his family will find peace and consulation in the fact that he gave his life for something he believed in. I too agree the immigrants should be given citizenship if they serve and be allowed to bring their immediate family over also if they chose.  Juanita
This man deserves citizenship and our heart felt condolences to his family and friends, rest in peace my fellow soldier.
I am at pain why this young kid who loved america so much had to die by volunteering,so he could fast track his immigration papers!Isn't this cooercive, slimy immigration?? Everyone here is crying over spilt milk(read blood)!! Dear Americans....get clever, dont gulp down what the media/administration feeds you!! There's a whole world out there who dont like to be bullied! Wilted rose and ignorant Army wife are clever!...They understand!! Dont cry!!--do something over NOT apilling MORE blood of the Great Armed forces by cowboy adventurism!! A living hero is always better than a dead Hero!!
This happens more than you could imagine.  I worked at a veteran organization a few years ago and many vets are not citizens, especailly the older ones from before the 1980's.  The following link is about a 21 year old that was trying to become a citizen and how the government gave him the run around and now he is dead.  Very sad. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080627/ap_on_re_us/soldier_citizenship
Now this is a young hero who served our country at one of its worst times and he died for what he believed.  NOTE TO ALL ILLEGALS in American breaking the law and refushing to speak English.  When you show this kind of courage and desire to live or die for this country, then maybe you will belong.
i like what Thomas schmitz malone , Wisconsin said  of how a young man fromm europe chose to fight and die for a country that wasent his to get his citizenship and u see these other people who come in illegal. MAY GOD BLESS HIM AND HIS FAMILY FOR HIS SERVICE. THAT IS WHAT U CALL A TRUE AMERICAN AND DESERVES HIS CITIZENSHIP HE WOULD BE MORE AMERICAN THEN MOST NATURALY BORN AMERICANS. I SAY AGAIN MAY GOD BLESS HIM AND HIS FAMILY
Joan Duggan:  First, Dawid was a true hero and I hope he will be given the citizenship he has so rightly earned.  However, those of us who consider Bush a murderer don't make the comment based on the war in Afghanistan - which is a just war.  We base it on his personal war in Iraq which has cost so many men and women - over 4,000 - their lives for no reason.
Thank you Dawid.  Broke my heart to read this story but made me proud to be an American reading the posts.  Thank you for your sacrifice and thank you for helping a number of us realize how lucky we have it to live in a great country.
My 18 year old son is leaving July 7 for boot camp in San Diego.  He is proud of what he is doing.  I have mixed emotions as well - both proud and aprehensive.  All the young men and women who serve our country deserve our support and prayers, and most of all to call themselves American.
