Military honors non-fighting WWII soldier

WASHINGTON – Desmond Doss seems like an unlikely person to have a building named after him on a military post.

A Seventh-Day Adventist, Doss was a conscientious objector during World War II who refused to train on Saturdays or carry a rifle.

Desmond Doss is awarded the Medal of Honor by President Harry Truman on Oct. 12, 1945.

"He always put God first in his life," his 86-year-old widow, Frances, said in an interview.

But the gentle, lanky Doss was also a war hero, and for his heroics on the island of Okinawa in 1945 the guest house at Walter Reed Army Medical Center was renamed Doss Memorial Hall Wednesday morning.

"Doss was a uniquely American soldier and a uniquely American story, and yet unique in all of American history," Col. Gordon Roberts, a friend, said at the dedication ceremony.

Doss grew up in Lynchburg, Va., and enlisted as a conscientious objector in 1942. He served as a combat medic on Guam, the Philippines and Okinawa.

On May 5, 1945, under heavy Japanese fire, he saved the lives of 75 sick and wounded soldiers by lowering them, one by one, down a 400-foot cliff on Okinawa. For this and other acts of courage, Doss was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Harry S Truman.

"Through his outstanding bravery and unflinching determination in the face of desperately dangerous conditions, Pfc. Doss saved the lives of many soldiers," his Medal of Honor citation read.

(The only other conscientious objector to be awarded the Medal of Honor was Cpl. Thomas Bennett, an Army medic killed in Vietnam in 1970 while tending to wounded soldiers.)

Doss' widow said he would have been honored by today's ceremony, just as he was by his Medal of Honor, but she said he would have taken it all in stride.

"He was very loyal to his country," she said, "but he wasn't the kind that stuck out his chest and said, 'Look at me.' No, he wasn't that kind. He wasn't puffed up."

War wounds to Doss' legs and arm took their toll on his health. He spent five years in hospitals after the war, suffered from tuberculosis and was nearly deaf. But he lived out his life devoted to his faith, his family and his country.

Desmond Doss died in 2006 at the age of 87.

"He was just a wonderful person, that's all there is to it," Frances said. "He was so kind and his whole attitude was being so kind and wonderful to people."

Just goes to show a Man can be a man with or without a Gun in your hand. Wish we had more like DOSS and BENNETT. Stick to your belifts and still SERVE.
God bless all of America's heroes.
God Bless Him . Another fine example of the " Best Generation " . You can see that his wife is proud as punch about him . Also , there are still just as many " Good American's " serving our country today .

AMERICA YOU HAVE MUCH TO BE PROUD OF, THIS MAN WAS ONE AMONGST MANY. CONTINUE TO BE PROUD OF THE UNSELFISH WORKS YOUR PEOPLE DO AROUND THE WORLD. THE UK HAS MUCH TO LEARN FROM THE ORDINARY PEOPLE OF SUCH A YOUNG DEMOCRACY.
This man was wounded and nearly died saving lives of soldiers he loved.

- "Greater love has no man than this, that he might lay down his life for a friend."  (Jesus)
This is the type of bravery and selfless dedication that makes me very proud to be an American.....for about the MILLIONTH time in my life!
Thanks for remembering.  I met Mr. Doss in the '60s.  Yes, he was not "puffed up" and downplayed his actions.  A good example for all of us
Dear Martin Flanders....thank you for your kind words. We watch as the UK bows to islam everyday and we truly hope that you can save yourselves from this new form of cancer.
Desmond Doss makes me proud to be an American. His story embodies the Best of what it means to be heroic, and yet humble! God Bless him.
As a quaker I really respect his desire to not carry a gun.  As a human and mother I am proud of his decesion to help his fellow man. here is a perfect example of not supporting the war but supporting the soldiers.  Heaven bless him and all of our men and women in uniform all over the world.
Just goes to show anyone can do it, even Gay Men and Lesbian Woman could serve their Country with or without a Gun; that is what America should be about.
I have had the honor to know several (High Honor) medal winners, They do not flaunt their medals, because they were only doing their job. Most only wanted to go home in one piece! I am glad there are and were people like them, We may be speaking German Or worse!
An honor long past due for this brave and distinguished American fighting man. Congratulations to the military for getting this one right!
I get tears thinking about men like him. After serving 21 years in submarines, I still can't imagine what he (and the men he saved) went through. God Bless America!
We as Americans should be honored to have the men and women of the "Greatest Generation" living among us.  We should also honor and appreciate the current generation of America's Servicemen and women. Their sacrifices and those of their families who await their return should NEVER be forgotten.  Bless Them All!!!
CPL Doss WAS a fighting Soldier, he just did his fighting without a weapon in his hands. As a Medic his actions motivated those who did carry weapons to fight harder, knowing if wounded they would be cared for by great men like CPL Doss and many unnamed Medics on the field of battle.
A nice tribute to another memeber of what was a truly heroic generation.  It is sad to see them disappearing but they will and should be always remembered for their sacrifices and the freedom saved from tyrannies past.
god bless america,im proud to be one.if asked again to serve my country i will.

Thank God for folks like him. If it were not for these Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines, I may not be here or other commrades in arms then, my time, and now!! God bless him, his family and values!! Don't just support those who believe this way, but the others that are going the distance also!!! Remember, this is America, we fought, fight and will continue to do so for the right of all Americans, It was My Choice.
That is the true meaning of patriotism, honor, God, and country.  There are more where that came from, in the hearts of our sons and daughters serving to secure world freedom.  This is heroism define
Sorry to see this blog trail so short.  This man, along with our countless many whom have served, exemplifies the heroism that our military and civilian spirits portray in the fight for freedom.

God bless all that serve.  Seek out a late-70 some year old, or 80 year some year old who has served in WWII and thank them.  They have endured unspeakable horror during war.  And, in the meantime, thank our Korean, Vietnam, Persian Gulf, and recent war vets for thanks.  These men and women (don't forget the gals!) are our "Spartans".

America IS the light of Liberty! Our war vets and fighting soldiers protect our rights.
Thank You Mr. Rutherford, great story about the man and his beliefs.
Amazing this man was....saving all those lives while being shot AT, too!! I read a book about him and learned of his deep devotion to his country adn how he found a way, while standing firnly on his convictions, to serve without shooting at the enemy.
I am not a conscientious objector, like he was and  I am not a Seventh-Day Adventist, but I am proud to see how devoted he was to his country and to God.
Medics are Hell's Angels on the battlefield, as a Viet Nam vet, I know.  God bless Desmon Doss and all the rest before, during and since!
I also wish we had more like DOSS and BENNETT... if we had people like them as President, we wouldn't be in this mess!
The seeds of glory are planted in the meek. They are the quiet heros.
"Proud as Punch", What A wonderful saying! God DID bless Desmond with a wonderful wife, a wonderful country, and an unshakeable faith in the almighty creator and his fellow man. You are an inspiration to us all Desmond, and it is comforting to know that the lord has you to welcome the worthy in heaven, what would we be without you and the others to inspire us.....Thank you forever!
You guys really need to learn how to spell
That is a person that loved life, and did what he

(CNN) — Presumptive Republican nominee John McCain is raising eyebrows for a joke about killing Iranians — the second time the cycle a stab at humor involving the rogue nation has landed him in hot water.

At a Tuesday campaign event in Pennsylvania, a questioner referred to a recent survey that revealed cigarette exports to Iran rose significantly during the Bush administration. McCain replied jokingly, "Maybe that's a way of killing them."

After a few chuckles from those in attendance, he added "I meant that as a joke, as a person who hasn't had a cigarette in 28 years."

At a campaign event before the New Hampshire primary, the Arizona senator parodied the Beach Boys single “Barbara Ann,” replacing the lyrics with the words "Bomb Iran."

THE MEASURE OF A MAN OR WOMAN IS HOW THEY CONDUCT THEMSELVES IN TIMES OF STRIFE.THE GOOD TIMES ARE A BONUS.
TRUE HEROS HAVE NOTHING TO PROVE.THEY DON'T WAVE THE LOOK AT ME FLAG AROUND. THEY'RE ARE IN ALL KINDS OF SITUATIONS, SOLDIER,MEDICS,FAMILIES FUNDRAISING FOR EQUIPMENT OR DONATIONS TO A CAUSE.ANYTONE WHO BELIEVES IN THE BETTERMENT OF MANKIND AS A WHOLE.
I ADMIRE EACH AND EVERYONE OF YOU. THANKYOU FOR YOUR UNSELFISH ACTS.

We salute you PFC Doss
This story is but one more example of the the great "us" in America who find a way to serve one another. Not to be confused by red or blue states, parties, or special interests. We hold these truths, all men(women) are created equal and this hero is sure proof of that fact. Kudos to the "U.S. of America". thank you all vweterans.
Can we count on ALL Americans to deliver to the rest of us their dedication to country, their committment to freedom, and their unswerving patriotism? Desmond Doss, hero, did and it was in the years just after WWII that the U.S. became a world leader. I'm concerned that there are groups of people in this country who not only are not putting the U.S. first, but will support their countries of origin in times of crisis.  What an injustice to Desomond Doss and others who fought like heck to defend our ideals.
Reminds me of a humble medic i once knew who died serving his country, my son Brandon - so proud of you babe  -  Mom
perhaps long overdue.  too bad a person can't be in the military AND still be a seventh day adventist(keeping the doctrine of the faith).

Doss personifies the courage that flows through all of the heroes who don the uniform of this country and volunteer to fight her battles on hellish fields in countries they may never return from.
We can move ahead knowing that his primary mission that day was to save his wounded comrades, even as he took hits himself. One can only imagine the withering fire he withstood in those hellish minutes as the Japanese fought against him, trying to prevent him from saving his comrades. And one can only imagine being one of the soldiers being lowered that 400' knowing that he was up there under that barrage, and the faith those men he saved must have put in him.
"There is no limit to the amount of good one can do if they don't care who gets the credit."- unknown
Godspeed to his soul and his family. A grateful country thanks you!!!
Yes, God bless those that heal and save lives in the name of their religion, instead of those (on all sides, mind you) that beget violence in the name of their God.  I hesitate to think that many of those controlling our military now would lay down their lives for the war in Iraq.
To all of our military personal. I shudder at the thoughts of what some of you have gone through to protect this country and its freedoms that so many people take for granted. To all of our military, I say Thank You. God bless Mr Doss, and each and every one of you. GOD BLESS THE USA!!!!!!!!!!!
How about the person whom give's their life to people never known of a nation they serve. Sailors,Airmen/women,Coasties,Marines and Soldiers of the past, present and future.

Not all died fighting in combat some perished fighting for freedom 382-ACWV-VFW 5,800 North Carolina Military 407,000 died from Cold War Service and "somewhere in those lost the true amount" of Forgotten Heros KIA,POW,MIA (still classifed) some fought and some did not have the chance yet they gave all for love of people then knew and did not.

"We Remember" American Cold War Veterans
Other than well earned medals of valor, there is no higher honor or sign of respect a medic can get than to be called "Doc" by those they gave care to.
My "hat is off" to "Doc Doss" and "Doc Bennett" and to those in my old outfit.

May they rest in honored peace.
I am proud to say this is one of the reasons my daughter chose to enlist in the U S Army.  This is the type of example we all need.  God Bless America and our troops.
My late father was one of those young men that wanted to serve their country but wouldn't carry a gun.  He, too, served as a medic in the Pacific war.  According to the book "We Have Just Begun to Not Fight: An Oral History of Conscientious Objectors in the Civilian Public Service During World War II" by Heather T. Frazer and John O'Sullivan, men such as my father and Doss were actually known as "conscientious cooperators" because they did join the military.
Reading that story made me teary eyed. God bless his soul.
CPL Doss proved that he believed we were all God's children and his love of God and his faith in Christ's teachings allowed him to enter into the kingdom of heaven. Many will praise him for serving his country, but this was his opportunity by his testimony of serving his God. America's leaders must not forget to what cause we are fighting for. We must start fighting evil, destruction, immorality and against inhumane treatment, not fighting because we do not want another country to become as powerful as we are. Don't worry about power, for if we fight for the right cause and keep God first in all battles, there is nothing more powerful than God.
Thanks, CPL Doss, for proving that faith in God saves lives and wins battles! You are truly a hero for America and more importantly, for God's Army.
to MARTIN FLANDERS, BIRMINGHAM, UNITED KINGDOM;
I agree with your post almost entirely, except that it's comments like yours that confuse even ordinary Americans about what type of government we have.  The USA is a Republic, not a Democracy.  We only have democratic votic procedures; aside from that, we are purely a republic and most people seem to forget that.  Democracy is more problematic as history has shown it to easily become a Tyranny of the Majority.  In a Republic, we have our guaranteed rights that are we are born with that no majority can rule against.  That is what makes the USA special.  Not democracy.
