New Navy uniform goes retro

WASHINGTON – The Navy uniform is going retro.

About 100 U.S. sailors around the world are testing out the Navy's new service dress khaki uniform.

The look isn't really new though – it is actually a throwback to the old World War II-style uniform which was worn through the Vietnam era – and includes a black tie worn with a khaki coat that has large black shoulder boards.

Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, sports the "new" Navy look at a press conference at the Pentagon on July 2.

The dress khakis, which are worn for events ranging from business meetings and promotion ceremonies to meetings at the White House and testimony on Capitol Hill, can be worn year round.

While the new uniform will add to the larger collections of uniforms rather than replacing one, Navy officers and Chiefs will ultimately be allowed to wear it in place of three other existing uniforms – the less formal service khakis, the formal dress blues, and the formal whites.

Admiral Elmo Zumwalt, the chief of naval operations in the early 1970’s, discarded the look, arguing that it forced sailors to carry too many uniforms in their sea bags when deployed.

Navy officials today argue the opposite, saying it will actually decrease the number of uniforms a sailor will have to carry on deployment: officers and chiefs can wear the long-sleeved khaki shirt and tie for formal work situations and then easily change to a formal dress uniform by putting on the jacket.

The officer who is bringing back the look is Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen, who was the chief of naval operations before taking on his current post.

Mullen believes the new dress khakis distinguish the officers from the enlisted sailors, and he is proving it by wearing the uniform during the trial period.

The testing began in June, runs through the end of the summer, and includes sailors at the Pentagon, in Norfolk, Virginia, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and even as far away as Yokosuka, Japan. At the end of the summer, the testers will evaluate the uniform in focus groups and online.

So far, the sailors wearing the uniform in the Pentagon are raving about it.  A few civilian Pentagon staffers have less praise for the attire, though, saying it looks "too old-fashioned."  The large shoulder boards take the most criticism, with one civilian reporter at the Pentagon calling them "big and awkward."

Admiral Mullen debuted the new uniform at a White House event last month, where the president reportedly gave the look a thumbs-up.

Asked how he likes the uniform after a recent press conference, Mullen said with a laugh, "Actually, I love it! What do you think?"

"distinguish officers from enlisted?" what do you think the blue dungarees (e1 to e6) separate the cpo's and officers (e7 to o10) khaki uniforms do?

the real crime here is the navy exchange system. they make all the profit from the semiannual uniform changes.
re:new uniform regs

The new khakis look great-they bring back the tradition of the no-nonsense, dedicated seafaring navy of the WW2-Vietnam era. It's no wonder so many Pentagon "civilian staffers" dislike it.

Thumbs up to the new uniform!
Mark
They are standard shoulder boards already worn on the White, Mess Dress, P-Coat. The complainers in the pentagon are used to seeing the soft shoulder boards worn on the long sleeve white shirt with the Dress Blue jacket removed, or on the blue sweater.
Wrong changes. Khaki is for Officers and Senior Enlisted which has functionality as well as traditions of leadership seperation.
The Dress White Uniform is a tradition and should be retained....ditch the dress blues, though.
Wish they'd bring back the denim front panel bell-
bottom blue jeans we used to buy at the surplus
store in the 60's....loved them!
My brother is in the Navy, he's enlisted.  So what when he gets to officer status he's going to have buy yet something else?  What about all the ABU/ACU (and whatever other acronym they have for the cammis) that keep changing?  Its not fair and is making the men and women spend money when its not needed.  The military isn't a fashion show.
More of my money down the drain, why not spend that on pay for the services instead of this crap.
My husband is in the Navy in Norfolk...I personally think their uniforms are fine the way they are and all the guys I know agree. This is just more money we are going to have to spend on uniforms and stuff. I hate to see the whites go, it is such a classic look and I love seeing them lined up on the ship wearing them when they get back from deployments.
They all look like they should be in the Marines not the Navy, I went though this change in the early 70's in the Navy and the only ones who liked it was the manufactures who made a fortune. Has anyone checked into Admiral Mike Mullen's connection to a clothes manufacture?? By the way, as we went into the 80's all Naval personnel had to change clothes styles back to traditional wear.
Hoorah!!!!!  Anything to replace the washed out looking BDUs that our commanders have been appearing in public.  AFter all, they are professionals with a dedicated life-mission and the uniform helps to emphasize this fact.
I have to agree that it looks fantastic.
I was an active duty LT from '83-'87.  Between having to own working winter blues and summer service khaki to summer working whites, these uniforms look the sharpest.

Same hard boards as used on the Summer working White blouse and the Service Dress White Jacket and the Winter Officer's jacket.
Same blue tie as the Dress Blues and Winter working Blues service uniform.

Some people may argue that it's "retro" or "old fashioned relic".  Well, I disagree.  Much like the crackerjack Dress uniform of the enlisted, this is not "Retro".  This a United States Navy Officer's uniform that is easily recognizable by all branches of the service that I or any other officer would be proud to wear again.
I think the white uniforms look sharp.  They bring out how the class in the uniform and looks great!  I love th white uniform.  It is handsome!
uniforms in the navy have meanings and call for different kinds of respect, if you see a cami you know its a MAA or a seabee, so that means help, if everyone wears the same  you wont know if they have rank  without really getting close and could make some ranking officers upset if they are not saluted fast enough. navy is pround of our uniforms why look like all the other services
Thoes uniforms look great on the silver screen. The brown uniforms from the U.K. were itchy and hot. I used to wear them for fun during the 1980's new wave era. They have to be of good cotton/whatever blend of fabric or the end result is similar to wearing a garbage bag over yourself like a poncho. Sweat, sweat and more sweat.
Hoorah, the Khaki uniform is the most practical and well known uniform ever.  No confusing the Chief's or Officers from enlisted's in the dress blues.   However, the dress whites & Blues should be retained.
        Retired Senior Chief...
Not seeing too much to complain about with the boards. They are almost the same size as the standards, although (personally) I think that they are only slightly oversized and that they (might) be made smaller after this "test" period. I like the 3:1 ratio on uniforms as deployment is chore enough without wondering where the rest of your issue is/was/will be in 9 months. Now, can they make my M4 take a different rail system and how much smaller will that go is anyones guess.
is this really necessary to keep changing uniforms?? The tax payers just keep on paying.  I think they're ugly.
As a former Navy ombudsman and navy wife, it will be a shame to loose the dress white uniforms.  It is an incredibly handsome uniform and I have never seen anyone look bad in it.
They are totally fine. My father was one who used it back in the day right through to his retirement in the 80's. What people do not understand. The Pentagon dictates what you wear as wella s what you do. It is not a democracy folks. The US Military is not politcal. Whoever is in the White House is their boss (i.e. the Camander and Chief Office).  You will always work for someone you like and someone not so much, but you know that it is relatively short term, if your a career military. Changes in uniform, facial hiar allowed, no facial hair..it goes on and on....

Why does the military have to keep changing uniforms?
I'm sure that whatever we have now works so there is no need to change uniforms...unless the higher ups have friends that need the business. No wonder the country keeps getting deeper in debt....a whole lot of wasteful spending.
Rather than worrying about a new uniform, the Navy should be spending money, time and effort on its Marine Corps--upgrading the vehicles to the MRAPS that save lives, or improved body armor, flame-resistant uniforms.  Or dealing with readiness issues on its ships in a tight budgetary environment.
As a former Naval officer (female) let me just say that KHAKI is the most unflattering uniform in the Navy for females.  Witness Demi Moore in A Few Good Men - if SHE looked like a bag of s--t tied up in the middle, what do you think it does for the AVG woman???  For women (officers) there is no equal to the our Dress Blues.  It's tailored, there is a matching bridge coat which, when worn with a wihte scarf, is as chic and flattering to us as the Marine's evening dress is for them.  Believe me - that's how I caught my Marine husband's eye.  MY opinion as one who had to wear khaki???  NO!!!!!!!
I really like it, looks very nice.
Hey Admiral Mike!!!

VERY GREAT IDEA!!!  I am all for it!

Best Regards
Chuck shea
Wish they were available when I was in the Navy...I love em!  Used to refer to them as the McHale's Navy uniform :)
In the scheme of things, really...
....WWWHHHHHHOOOOOOO cares?!

Honestly.
Wow what a thing to be  recognized for so you can leave the service looking like you have accomplished something.Gee I bet when he is at the retirement home he will have his fashinista story to tell. Can you please tell me as former sailor just what the hell are you thinking MORON.
It's a waste of tax payers money.......The money should be spent to up dated equipment and their resupply systems. Sounds like a lot of good uniforms will be s _ _ _ canned.

Semper Fi
It's great that the Navy is changing it's service dress uniform. Seriously, how can you dress in all white and call yourself a seamen with a straight face!?
The shoulder boards are the same size.  No difference. They just appear large since the normal Capital Hill press conference uniform is Service Dress Blues (no shoulder boards are worn since the rank is on the sleeves of the Dress Blues).
It seems like the Navy is only worried about distinguishing their personnel through uniform changes to easily determine an Enlisted sailor from a Chief or officer. Why don't they just make the entire Navy's unform as a whole more presentable and user friendly. I guess the old adage is still around where people in charge don't do things easier if it makes sense! There is always a better, easier and more user friendly way to do things.
Honestly there are more important issues to worry about in this country and in our allies countries.  I wish that we had a president with some initiative, liking to president F.D.Roosevelt who would start firing the leadership and choose the best person for the job and not the one that sucked up the most.
With that uniform, Adm. Mike Mullen looks like a Russian officer.
I am an ex-AF-brat, my Grandfather was in the balloon corp, my ex-husband was Air Force, three sons were in the Army(2) and Air Force(1).  So, I am gungho Air Force.  But, the Navy dungerees and whites were the sexiest, and what was wonderful, you could tell what branch of the Military they were in.  But don't believe the thirteen buttons are thirteen chances to say "no".  Just ask any wife or girl friend.
I'm aformer Navy Petty Officer  I want it Know How much was spent on this Joke? I was proud of my uinforms. If the Officers don't like there uinforms
retire get and get out. I was a BT"3 In #1MMR USS
Indpendence CV-62 1987-1991 I was Proud of Uinform
of the elisted and officers ! It's just a way to waist
more money that could be better spent up grading Sailors living spaces on board ship!
 What A JOKE !

the enlisted are getting rid of coveralls, utilities(dungerees),working whites and working blues.
for formal occasions we shall have dress whites or dress blues, depending on witer or summer and for office type work e6 and under shall have a tan shirt and dark blue(really black) pants resembling the marines charlies. for heavy duty hard work we will have blue digitalized bdus. it takes away 4 and replaces it with 2 a bit more versitile uniforms. our dress uniforms i doubt will change other then the white crackerjacks are getting blue pipping so the resemble a negative of the male dress blues.
cpos and officers i dont know what their doing but i know my old cheif wanted a pair of WWII aviation greens, wich i believe are similiar to what mike is wearing..
Dont worry!! dress blue and dress whites are here to stay!! we will still man the rails in whit dixie cups (guys) and white cracker jacks unless its winter. the Dress blues.
so far the only change to the whites is blu pipping to mirror the blues. thats it.
btw good by utilities!
Is this all the Navy has to do?
As a former military member, both officer and enlisted, I like the idea of a more versatile and user friendly color uniform.  My question is why do we care what civilian contractors think about the uniform?  They wear their "civies" to work.  As for being too "old-fashioned" looking, I have always thought that the uniforms of the world war two era were much better looking.  Why is it that the best looking uniforms are the marines and theirs have not changed much over the last 50 years.  Good job to the Navy for bringing back class to the military uniform.
I wonder how much the officer and chiefs are going to have to fork out to pay for these uniforms. I remember when Adm Zumwalt changed the uniforms for the enlisted and the officer corps, the howl from the naval personel was tremdous. I wish the active duty personel get better pay but that's another story.
Having served 8 years in the Navy and trashed numerous uniforms, hating the dungarees and working whites the most, I like the direction the Navy is moving in. For those who think this money could be spent better, this is a drop in the bucket compared to other ridiculous expenditures and with better results.
Another thing for the service men/women to pay for.  I just learned that the US Government actually charges the trainees in Basic for their first issue of uniforms.  SHAME ON THE U.S. FOR THE WAY THEY TREAT OUR MILITARY FROM THE BEGINNING!
As someone who would actually be wearing this uniform, I think it's great! One of the perks of being a Sailor, officer or enlisted, is getting to look good in a spiffy NAVY uniform. I don't mind dropping some money every once in awhile to look this hot. The new khaki getup makes me feel like Charlton Heston.
The new uniform is not just for enlisted. Sorry that the PO1's (E6) and below are upset but Cpo's (E7) thru O whatever will wear the Kaki.

Get off your buts and make chief. Last time I looked Chiefs were enlisted.

Made Chief a few years after the Kaki blouse and company was ZUMWALTED out.

Well Done Navy Ubiform Board.

SCPO USN Ret.
I hope they are made in the USA!!!!
