Price hike

After veering dangerously close to empty, I finally found gas near the Louisiana border. $3.95 a gallon seemed high until I went to pay the owner and saw what he was charging for water.. $10.99 a case! Talk about a mini-mart robbery!

We're now at a command center along Interstate 10, where the water is free and the license plates on the ambulances are from as far away as Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Colorado. Hundreds of buses are stacked here like dominoes, awaiting deployment to New Orleans and the unknown.

Supply and demand.
Economics 101.....gouging on the gas is illegal!
Talk about fear mongering.
1. Count how many bottles are in the case - 15
2. Divide $10.99 by 15

73 CENTS per bottle

Where I come from, that’s not “mini-mart robbery”, that’s A GOOD DEAL.
This story should be retracted for FEAR MONGERING
That establishment should be fined royally! I see it happen all the time, yet the government doesn't do anything about it.  It's common to have a gas station charge $3.69 on one block and another $3.98 or even $4.03 on the other.  I simply boycott those establishment.  They will NEVER get my two cents.
I am in Baton Rouge, it is Sunday I and am very impressed so far with the state and local government's hurricane action plans compared to Katrina.  We have seen no panic, but people are really paying attention this time and doing what they should do - so far.  Having said that, there are always people who simply have no place to go and no family to help them so there will always be someone left behind.  It is sad, but true.  I work at a hospital and must report to work tonight and be there for at least 24 hours.  I am trying to find a shelter for my elderly landlady who is in very poor health and has no family and should not be alone during the storm which is supposed to hit in the morning.  Baton Rouge is not sheltering for this storm like they did for Katrina so I hope I find her a place.  God Bless everyone and stay safe.
Nothing like helping your fellow man when he is down and desparate.
Should turn this joker in for price gouging..... and publicize it to the point that no one buys from this store and puts them out of business.
Charging 10.99 a case for water is inhumane. What ever happened for a little human kindness? Some of the people evacuating may not have the money and ripping them off is what store owners choose to do to people. That is just awful.
stores that charge $10.99 for a case of water should be shut down. especially when people are trying to escapoe from such a terrible thing like this amaging hurricane. why are some people so greety, what's wrong with this world.God bless them all and take care of them.
I am in State College, PA and $10.99 for a case of 15 bottles is a steal!

Stop freaking out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
$10.99 for a case of water is very reasonable for a gas station mini-mart.  Office supply stores and warehouse clubs have the same case for $6.79, but at a convenience store you're paying for convenience.  Cut the gas station owner a break; people already hate him for high gas prices that aren't his fault.

And would somebody please give Janet Shamlian a calculator and the Sunday paper sale inserts if she's disgusted by convenience-store pricing?
Years ago, living in Florida, the mayor came out, seriously, against price gouging and saw to it that those guilty of it were prosecuted for taking unfair advantage of people in a catastrophic situation. The people who suffer the most in these situations are the poor and disadvantaged. The last ones who should be taken advantage of. Don't they have enough problems already?  This is NOT punishing people for being rich. They have many more options available to them. This should be made a federal law that automatically goes into effect the moment a catastrophic situation rears its head.
