The few who stayed behind

After being slammed and submerged by Katrina, few residents of New Orleans and its equally at-risk suburbs were willing to gamble with their lives as Gustav marched ashore.

By the time the winds picked up and the first raindrops began to fall Sunday evening, virtually the only humans on the streets were police, National Guard troops, private security guards and TV news crews.

Among those few brave or foolhardy souls who appeared not to belong to any of those groups was Delia Labarre, a New Orleansian who took a break from her pre-curfew walk in the French Quarter to explain why she ignored Mayor Ray Nagin’s mandatory evacuation order and an invitation from relatives in Texas to ride out the storm with them.

“I stayed because of my cat,” she said. “She’s a weird cat. She hisses and stuff.”

In addition to not wanting to upset her pet, Labarre said she was confident Gustav wouldn’t bring anything worse than Hurricane Katrina, which she rode out at home.

“This time I know what the building can take,” she said.

Brenda Shoss of St. Louis, strolling the streets of New Orleans with her husband and son, said her presence also was attributable to pets.

She was in town to accept an award on behalf of a group she founded, KinshipCircle.com, for its work reuniting owners and pets after Katrina, when she heard about Nagin’s evacuation order. This time, people leaving on city buses were allowed to bring their pets with them, so Shoss volunteered at Union Station to assure the animals and owners were well situated for the travel.

“We went from the awards ceremony to action mode,” she said.

Ambling along Canal Street, Gerald Albert of New Orleans said he and several family members stayed behind because they were part of the skeleton staff that their employer – the Crown Plaza Hotel – asked to stay on through the storm.

Albert, who went through Katrina at home and emerged unscathed, marveled at the weird vibe of the silent streets, saying that it was different from the battlescape he experienced after Katrina.

“I left two days after Katrina and when I came home, it was like a ghost town,” he said. “This is stranger.”

New Orleans, a city I've always loved, is a ghost now, like a beautiful, faded opera tune played upon a harpsichord...we mourn her past glory. And the Republicans will probably try to make political capital out of her devastation. But it's too little too late, McCain/Bush!
I'm sorry, if these people don't have the sense to get out, what can we do????  God help them.
I probably wouldn't stay behind because of my cat, but my little Mookie kitty is indeed the love of my life, and it would be extremely heart-renching to leave her behind. I would feel extremely guilty and sad.
I hope when it's over that Delia isnt up on her roof asking to be rescued.
I would never leave my pets behind either. At least this time people are able to bring pets on public transportation. For many folks, their pets are their children. My cat is my baby. I hope and pray this storm is nothing like Katrina.
Is your life worth a pet? I don't think so!
God be with you my fellow Americans.
My boyfriend is at kessler airforce base( nat'l guard) and they didn't have to evaculate, but had the students there, on lockdown in one of their buildings.   He doesn't even know why. Why is that?
Good luck to them I say!!
Mother Nature, as beautiful as she is, can be very harsh and demoralizing!!! Living in centrel Maine, we experience her wrath with extremely low temperatures, ice storms and white-out snow blizzards and even occasional flooding. I wish our Cajun friends the very best but feel they should heed the governments warning and "evacuate the area". Atleast officials are making provisions for people to take their pets with them . Leave while you still can !!!
I hope these people who are staying realize they aren't just risking their lives, but the lives of those who have to come and rescue them once things get too bad!!
What bothers me about those who select to stay behind, even when they can take their pets, is that they are ultimately asking rescue people to risk THEIR lives for THEM.  My husband is one of those rescue people. Should the worst have happened - how many times do they have to risk their lives for people who REFUSE to ignore all warnings? An emergency is one thing - selecting to out yourself in harm's way is quite another.  It appears they think very little of the lives of public servants.
Huh? If you want to stay behind and risk yourself then go ahead, but don't make your poor pet suffer. Shouldn't the cat have rights too? Also, what do republicans have to do with the act of mother nature? We poor republicans get blamed for everything.
I have been praying since Fri. for all of them. I,too, have pets and would not leave them, they would have to be with me. So, I do understand. God will take care of these people this time and so will Americans. We don't trust the government either after the last time. Of course, they will use this to further themselves, like always, it is an election year. All of us already know how interested they were the last time when Katrina hit and they did nothing  even after 3 years. The republicans ignored the people of LA and then still did nothing.
GOD BLESS them ALL.I hope that they don't get hit this time. Enough is enough. The poor people have already been through enough. GOOD LUCK ALL.
Delia, I understand your situation.  My cat, Aurora, sounds just like your cat.  I'm the only person who can touch her.  There is no way she'd make it in a pet shelter.
Hurricanes are a force of nature. They have nothing to do with political parties! Be a real American and learn to take care of yourself! Don't depend on the government to take care of you! God bless and keep the brave people of New Orleans.
Unfortunately, should even one person die from the effects of Gustav, Democratic moonbats will be blaming Bush and/or McCain for it. So sad that these turds use human suffering for political gain.
My cats "hiss" also, but if I lived in New Orleans and had the opportunity to leave and if I heard right, people were allowed to take their pets, my cats would be "hissing" all the way to somewhere safe!
I can understand the need to take their pets with them, we have 2 shepherds and I would have a very difficult time leaving them behind to fend for themselves, that would just be cruel.
All I can say is good luck to all, and let God protect each and everyone of you and your pets.
Wouldn't you know it!!!  The first message appearing is from a Democrat blaming Bush for their problems. I believe those levees were there long before Bush and needing repair.  I didn't hear a word about them while Clinton had the watch, and the time to fix them. But stop looking for handouts and fix your own problems.  That is what built our country and made it great.  Or be like the rest of the world and live in squalor and run to places built by creative folks, push them aside and demand what they built for yourself.
May God be with all of you who stayed behind. I would not stay behind myself for a pet. I would take my pets with me...who cares if my  cat hisses. At least she would be safe. Maybe Pres Bush can watch the weather channel from his ranch...guess he could not have done that from the convention hotel room? The Pres. can activate FEMA or any other necessary law/relief agencies from anywhere he is! All it takes is some forethought.
Take care New Orleans, you are a great city!
May they be safe wherever they are. How do they bear it? this is too much. God Bless
How are the houses rebuilt on stilts holding up?  This was a very expensive endeavor to keep the houses from being flooded but how is the house staying entact with the wind?
Why wouldn't you just take the cat with you???????
As for the lady not leaving because of her cat...............they have/had buses for people who wanted to leave with their animals.  She could of gotten on that bus with her cat.  No excuses.
The people had plenty of warning and opportunity to get out in a reasonable fashion.   Now if they get trapped by flood waters they should not expect other people to risk their lives trying to rescue them, and they should not expect support to stay in place. They are on their own.  No more gimmees.
I could never leave a pet behind.  But if the locals survived Katrina with no damage other than loss of power, why not stay?  I certainly would.
Cats are wonderfully portable--pity that these people put their own safety and the safety of their pets in danger when it's so unnecessary!
Unless you have been through a Katrina, or other tragic happening, you really don't know what you would do.   I held certain opinions before I went to assist in the animal rescue efforts during Katrina. After being there, meeting people and hearing why they did or didn't do things, taught me to never pre-judge.  Bless all who are having to deal with this situation again in their lives.  Instead of sitting back and commenting, prepare to help in the aftermath. All of us can really help.
I have been praying for lives to be spared and property if possible. I have lived in New Orleans and my granddaughter has relatives that live there still. I am glad that people took it more seriously this time. I can remember telling others to get out last time and some did not. There were buses then too. You know you'all down there have a tendancy to stay...hmmm I'll just sit on back drink my beer or whatever and watch it,party in the bars, you hear me you know I am right. That is why so many lives were lost in Katrina. You know that pride factor comes in and the additude that nothing much will happen here. It's a choice each of you'all make, grateful you mostly made the right choice this time. The problem is, Gustav has been downed to a  catagory 2 at this point and if things are not destroyed as severely, the additude may return.
Delia is in the Quarter. It won't flood like the 9th did. If the levees hold, and the pumps are running hopefully the 9th won't go under. Houma is looking BAD though.
"Is your life worth a pet? I don't think so!"  Yes my
dog is more importment
To Roger, It's obvious you don't like pets.  My dog is worth more to me tha my own life, and I could never leave him behind. He has been with me for 5 years, and he is irreplaceable.  Yes, my dog is worth more than life to me. I lost my husband in August 07 and he has been my only source of comfort. If he goes, I go with him. Pets mean more than life to many people. For some, it is like leaving a member of their family behind. Dog spelled backwards = God
The scary thing about watching the hurricanes in the Gulf is knowing that they are only going to get worse in the next few years, as climate keeps changing for the worse. It's a testament to how much people love New Orleans, because they are willing to go back and do it all over again.
I wish all of them well and i so do understand as my dogs are my children. They said you could take your animals this time and why does she not put her cat in a pet carrier??? To some people they may value their lives the same as their pet. So let them be.......
Roger....I lost my cat a couple of months ago (not related to the hurricaine, obviously), but I would sit out in the middle of the street during the hurricaine just to have him back....Have a heart man!
Yes my pets are worth my life,  they are lives too and I am entrusted with them, to abandon them is to break that vow of care that they themselves cannot. They give unconditional love and I just couldn't simply leave them behind.  How is that not animal abuse? Abandonment is abandonment.
As our pets become more and more like members of our family, it is a heart-wrenching decision to have to make - leave and be safe leaving a pet behind to fend for itself, leave and hope to find a shelter that will accept you and your animal, or stay and risk own well being along with that of the pet.  It's one I hope I never have to make
We prayed. Gustav is fading and New Orleans is alright, just a little water and a few local power outages. We get worse than this on normal days here. It's a way of life. Run like cockroaches when the lights come on or stay like unwated relatives at christmas, it's their choice, but we all know we won't get help. I still have the internet even.
Anyone would be saddened to leave their pet behind, but that pet can be replaced, our lives cannot.
God Bless all the people and of course the animals that have to find shelter. I am always in awe of the brave National Guard and related Police Authorities and those who stay behind to protect and help whenever they can...everyone needs to show their gratitude to these wonderful people who risk their lives to help others.
Are the people that stay going to be the ones crying the loudest for a FEMA check?

Staying for an animal is not the smartest idea. Infact it's the opposite. No animal is worth the life of a person. So why are these people staying? To be on the news??? Everyone should be forced to leave. This way we don't have to hear about how fast the government didn't act to help those that stayed behind!
What's so hard to understand about MANDATORY evacuation!?? There was a mandatory evacuation for Katrina, too. Sure, there were people who couldn't get out for some reason or another, and I understand that. The people that really made me mad are the ones who could have gotten out but chose not to. They died and we're supposed to feel sorry for them? Or they needed help and took limited resources away from others who didn't have the option to leave before. I think they should have been charged.

This time, there is no excuse for there to be anyone left. Everyone had transportation out. New federal laws require that they be able to take their pets, too. NO reason to stay (protecting stuff is NOT a reason).

Luckily Gustav isn't as bad as they feared, which will probably increase the looting (which is just so stupid), but you can't play with your materialistic toys if you're dead.

Again...MANDATORY. There should be some sort of fine for anyone who stayed.
God save New Orleans.
Why don't they condemn the place and give it back to the ocean?  It costs taxpayers too much to keep rebuilding it, and FEMA is too ineffective.
I am saying a prayer for everyone down there. I have been through floods up here in NJ, though not as severe of course, and it's horrible.
My question is, what is the advantage in staying there? I am sure that Delia will survive as she stayed during Katrina but still, what's the point Delia? Take the cat and go.
If she really cared about her cat, she would place him in a crate and evacuate with it.  She just wants the attention staying behind gives her.
Sorry, just had to state that President Bush or for that matter MR Brown's the former FEMA directors responsiblity to get people out. IN Katrina the then governor and Mayor Nagin fell short. It was not the federal government's responsibility, it was the state! It was their responsibility to get people out. Their responsiblity to organize. There should not have been a last resort shelter at all places, the Super Dome. Still when will people take responsibility for their actions? The government should not be the ones doing it for you. You need to do for yourself and use your common sense. Get out when one is coming!!!
I can't believe there are still so many relying on the government to take care of them. Haven't they learned anything??? Take care of yourselves people.

The saving grace: pets are being treated fairly this time. You just can't expect people to leave their babies behind.
I don't get it -- am I missing something here?  Katrina devastated N.O. 3 years ago, and its citizens suffered. Many things were contributory:  a levee system that isn't build to withstand much more than a Cat 1 storm, and still hasn't and never will be reconstructed properly; federal governement apathy and delayed intervention; a governor and mayor who were totally clueless and failed to act swiftly in a time of crisis; and its own citizens, some who still refuse to accept reality.  Move away and move on with your lives, people, and stop expecting to be coddled and saved by government intervention if you fail to leave this time.
