‘Ups and downs’ for Pentagon attack survivor

WASHINGTON - On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, John Yates was standing less than 100 feet from where American Airlines flight 77 slammed into the Pentagon.

"There was just this tremendous boom, and a ball of fire went right over my head," he remembers. "I was blown through the air and ended up probably 30 feet away. The room was instantaneously black. The smoke was down to within a foot of the floor.

John Yates, seen in a photo taken on Sept. 2, 2002, when he was still wearing compression garments on his arms and hands to prevent scar tissue from hardening.

"It was painful to breathe. Everything was hot," he said. "There was debris everywhere, and you had to feel with your hands to see where you were going. I eventually made my way out into the corridor.

John spent the next two and a half months in hospitals with burns over 38 percent of his body.

"Top of my head, my face, my entire back, portions of my buttocks, my left leg had second-degree burns," he said. "I had third-degree burns on my hands and my forearms and elbows, which required three skin grafting operations."

I first met John in December 2001 as he was beginning five months of outpatient therapy at Washington Hospital Center's burn clinic.

"This is the toughest part, the no-pain, no-gain portion if it," he groaned as a rehabilitation therapist worked to straighten his charred fingers.

Long road  to recovery
Nearly two years later, John was still getting a grip on life, both emotionally and physically.

"I still have a long ways to go in my psychological recovery," he told me in September 2003. "I see a therapist every week."

He'd gained only limited use of his hands by then.

"I can't make a complete fist quite yet with my right hand, but I'm further along than I am with my left," he said. "My goal is to hold change in my left hand."

Today, John's doing much better, thanks in part to the support of his wife Ellen, but he still has physical and psychological scars that will probably remain with him the rest of his life.

"I've gained a remarkable range of motion in my hands since we last spoke in 2003," he told me recently. "I can make a fist with my right hand, and I've been able to finally hold change in my left hand."

He’s still being treated for post-traumatic stress disorder and occasional depression.

"Even on medications, I still have ups and downs," he said. "I still have days when I'm in a bad mood, when I'm in a funk. They only last a day or so, and then I'm back to being me again."

Back to the Pentagon
Now 57, John continues his work as an Army civilian security manager, but from offices in Crystal City, Va., not the Pentagon. He returns to the Pentagon occasionally on business.

"I don't have a problem going back into the Pentagon anymore," he said. "The first couple of years, I did. Now it's not so difficult."

He'll be back there today for the dedication of a park in memory of the 184 Americans killed in the Pentagon attack, and then, in about a year and a half, his offices will move out of Crystal City and into the Pentagon.

"Not saying I won't have problems, you know, but I'm better prepared now to go back into the building on a permanent basis," he said. "Doesn't bother me. I can deal with it."

Even though he's convinced another 9/11-type attack is inevitable.

"I just hope we're better prepared," he said. "It's not a matter of if it will happen, but when it will happen."

John's story echoes many survivor's stories in the sense that everyday is a struggle.  9/11 is with with them everyday...I was shocked to turn on the television this morning and find no mention whatsoever about the events of 9/11.  Have we forgotten that day and how those events transformed us?  Have we closed the book on honoring all those who died that day?  I guess we have.  I for one will never forget what it did to me.
Today is a day of remembrance for all Americans who have fallen for our glorious nation whether here at home or away in a foriegn land. I am truly humbled by the courage, the will to continue living (not just existing) and the sheer determination to to show America's enemies that we are united, strong and will protect democracy whenever and wherever it is threatened. Our country has gotten a rude awakening but I am confident that we are now prepared for any future attempts to attack against our homeland.
I am so very proud of the progress that Mr. John Yates had made since the attack at the Pentagon. May God continue to bless you and your family, strengthen you and fill you with peace. God bless America!
Great story of survivel and strenght.  My hat is off to John for going back to work and not letting the terrist win.  Today is a day to remember a very painful time for our country and to say a prayer for all the Americans who died, their families and those like John who survived.  I pray it never happens again.  God Bless America
As an American, I still feel the impact of 911 emotionally.  This day, 7 years ago, truley live in imfamy for me.  It makes me remember that there is good and evil in the world and that America still has enemies. Most Americans are sorry for what they did to you John, and many, many others.  God Bless you all and long live America.
I agree. I turned on the radio this morning and heard nothing about what happened 7 years ago, just regular radio talk show personnel going about their daily routines. The only mention of what happened was the voice of the Washington Post explaining what you can find in their paper today. Just one small article about that day. Some people say it's condemned to show images of that day because it doesn't respect those thousands of family members and U.S. citizens who died then or lost their loves ones in it. I say it embraces their names and should never be forgotten.
I think many Americans often forget those who suffered horrible injuries on that day, but survived. Those folks have not only had to try to recover from their physical wounds, but to heal their psychological ones as well. We only seem to talk about the victims who were killed on Sept. 11. I am happy for Mr. Yates and his family that he has recovered his health and can look to the future.
John, thank you for sharing your story.  YOU ARE MY HERO!
I think we need to keep this day as a memorial that the USA must remain vigilant in a world filled with terrorism.  Since radical Islam seems to be getting stronger, and no Muslim seems to be moving those people to change their way of looking at all "infidels", then we need to watch our backs at ALL TIMES.  WE need this remembrance; maybe there are those who don't believe that, but when the next thing gets blown up and destroyed will they volunteer to help or say we weren't prepared???
John, is such an insptration to many peole who are struggling with the events of 9/11, teh strength he and other survivors have shown goes to show you that our faith in our country will survive!!!! It's time for everyone to take a minute and remember what occured that day, and thank the MANY people who lost their lives in this terrible act of violence, we need to start satnding up and unite as one and never let our country go through this again, we as AMERICANS need to take a stance and do what ever we have to do to keep this from happening again, we need ot prepare more then we are. Since that horrible day I for one have always flown a flag for this country and will contiune to do so until I die, I attend every memorial in our city to pay my respects to the fallen, so please I ask all of you as AMERICANS to say a prayer for our contry, the fallen HEROS and the one s serving this great nation.

" GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN "
I am so happy there is a survivor, it still horrifies me.  I am not there but I feel John's pain.  Be strong John, no evil is greater than God's power.
I know John Yates - a remarkable man, remarkable family.   I know what I felt that day - miles away from he, and his wife...the pain I felt as days progressed.   The pain of so many families across our country.  Tears shed for the feeling of so many emotions.   Every American should always remember how deeply moved, and changed, we were that day.   For the lives lost, lives saved, heros honored and our basic sense of humanity and patrotism.   Our hats should be off everyday ...and our hands over our hearts.
We listened to Imus in the Morning today and his program observed a moment of silence at the time the first airplane hit the first tower. He also had Warner Wolf on today. Warner went on the air with Imus (who was on radio WFAN at the time) and told him what he was seeing from his apartment window which was a few blocks from the WTC. It is a day that will always be remembered by each of us in our own way. I pray for the families of those who died.
as a retired cop i am not  surprised that america has gone back to baseball applepie and all that crap. maybe when we get hit again it will stop
I went to high school with John. He was a leader even then.He was the type to greet the new kid even when that was not the cool thing to do. John is the type of person we should all look up to. I thank him for serving his country as a soldier and patriot. His heroism should never be forgotten. Thanks for being my friend
God Bless America.
Stories like John's is what makes Americans different.  I pray for peace for him and his family.  It angers me when I see all of these people waving American flags; which is a symbol of who we are, and feel disgrace with Barack Obama since he will not salute this flag or wear a lapel pin of the American Flag.  God Bless America
I am touched by his marvelous story. All of us adults remember that day well. My 12 year old did a report about 9/11 yesterday to read to the class today. All of the feelings and terror related to that day overwhelmed me as I tried to describe them to my daughter. I hope we can leave them with more than the "facts" of the attack. The children of today need to feel the emotion of the attack as well.
We need to remember the events of 0/11/08, and also not forget the unsung heroes of both 9/11/08, but all the others from previos wars (1& 2), whot gave us this great country.  God Bless them all and this country, we need God's help for sure.
I know some of the families who had loved ones killed dread this day but what a sad state we would be in if we didn't honor those who paid the ultimate price for the freedom's we take for granted. It would be a worse sin on our part if those same families thought no one cared anymore.  It should be a day of remembering fallen heros, those in the Towers, on planes, first responders, and the people who worked tirelessly during the aftermath, those who were so very injuted and are still trying to put their lives back together.  GOD HELP US IF WE LOOK ON THIS DAY WITHOUT REMEMBERING THE HORROR, THE EVIL THAT CAME TO OUR SHORES AND THE UNSURMOUNTABLE COURAGE SHOWN BY SO MANY.
I consider myself blessed to be John Yates' colleague, to be able to work with him on a daily basis.  John approaches every challenge with the determination to make things better - and that motivates us all.  His courage to keep moving forward is truly inspirational!
I would like to say that i too am shocked and dissapointed with the lack of reverence shown on this aniversary. Why has it dissapated? why are we not still showing the same amount of respect to the men and women who put their lives on the line that day, as well as those who lost theirs? And the Survivors...it seems that with every year that goes by, there is less and less rememberance shown. i know that i was not directly/indirectly affected by it, but i realize that there were so many that were. I know i still think about that day very often- even though i was only in 8th grade when it happened. i guess that i just want to say "god bless you" to the men and women who lived and died in new york on that day, as well as the many that continue, seven years later, to continue with their pain.
I am profoundly changed by the attacks on 9/11/01. That day changed the way I view the world. I always thought those things would never happen in our country. Then it did.
This is a blatant crock of s--t! I am more than sure that over half of these comments are manufactured in some way. The building was hit by a missile and there was no evidence whatsoever that a plane hit that building in any way, shape, form, or fashion. You guys are the biggest idiots under the sun. No fuselage or anything. I am not surprised that America is back to eating apple pie and having fun. I am surprised that there are this many stupid people in one country.
Does anyone remember listening to the radio of reports of a terrorist attack?  I remember thinking to myself that America is under attack and that we should all be afraid for our lives.  Then a report of a second attack came over the radio.  I knew from the report of the first attack that this was real.

Growing up as a kid my mother got me interested in reading Tom Clancy's novels.  In one of the novels a terrorist flys a plane into the capital building.  As I was listening to the radio I knew we were under attack. And I was scared.  What was going to happen next?

As we head into this election year we should all remember that we are Americans.  Shipping jobs overseas firing employees for petty differences, causing grief for others as a result of our own immaturity should stop for the sake of our nation and each other.  The fact that your black and I am white means nothing, we are Americans.  We are on the verge if not in a depression.  We need to put this great nation back to work and help others as best as we can.

This is just one of the reasons I like John McCain.  He stood up to the Vietnamese and said "Do what you want; I love my country and my family."  I don't think I could have done that....I would have done whatever I could just to come home.  My grandfather served thirty-one months in Europe during WWII and I could not have been more proud.  He really was part of the greatest generation that grew up without running water, electricity, telephones, A/C, microwaves, and video-games.  What will the next fifty years be like in this country?
I also applaud people like John Yates for enduring the painful recovery from 9/11 as he has.  however, I also recognize that this happened 7 years ago, and that everyone grieves and remembers differently.  9/11 was an historic moment in our nation's history, but so was Pearl Harbor.  Do you harbor the same resentment for people who don't bring their lives to a halt to remember those killed on December 7th?

9/11's impact will have been way worse than the day of if we are incapable of moving on and letting go, which is different than not caring or forgetting.  If the whole country was constantly crippled by the emotional impacts of 9/11 we would have lost even more than we already did.

Much respect to those who survived and continue to recover from their physical and emotional injuries, but the Giuliani-type mandate that we all live our lives as though 9/11 is the only day in our nation's history (or future, for that matter) that has any importance or relevance is counterproductive and will keep us mired in a state of fear that, last I checked, was NOT the American way.
We will never forget. For some, the pain and devastation is still so great perhaps they don't want to revisit it every year. It doesn't mean they don't care or don't fear another attack. I personally will always feel grief over 9/11 but I do not want to continue to see pictures etc. It's too much for me.
FOX NEWS HAD WALL TO WALL CONVERAGE UNINTERRUPTED FROM 6-8 (CENTRAL) THIS AM SO THERE ARE DEFINATLY PPL TALKING ABOUT THE EVENTS OF 9/11 AND REMINDING US ALL THAT WE ARE BLESSED.

Hoorah for you Michael.  If we live in fear, then Radical Islam has won.  We must move onward, stop attacking other countries, creating more enemies and mind our own country!  Maybe then, we can stop being the hated enemy of 25% of the worlds populace!
Way to go John, I'm greatfull that you are a survivor and are able to move on with your life. I don't think I will be abel to forget that day, and I'm not sure I want to. We all need to remember. Peace to all...
Oh my gosh!!! I can't believe the audacity of W.G. What kind of sicko is he.  How dare you!  Keep your stupid comments to yourself.  Crawl back under the "rock" you evidently live under.
To the individual who called this story a crock of s--t:  What do you mean no proof.  People watched the planes crash into the towers and the pentagon.  I don't know where you get your info from but we don't appreciate your attacking the comments of others.  Your comments make it sound as if it was Mr. Yates's fault for his injuries.  Not one person killed...aside from the terrorists who planned, plotted and followed through with these attacks...asked to die on 9/11.  I personally am moved every September 11th by the memorials held in my community.  WE MUST REMEMBER THIS DAY forever.
Why am I not surprised that in this commentary of remembering that terrible day, we would have a demented conspiracy theorist chime in and call us names like idiots?  Because you theorists oppose and deride anything that doesn't fit your narrow and warped point of view.  Regardless of WHAT hit the Pentagon, plane or missile, whatever your belief, the fact remains that our citizens DIED on that day.  People that woke up that day like any other and went to work to provide for themselves and their families.  People who were undeserving of the fate that awaited them on that day.  THAT is what we should remember.  Not get mired in what exactly happened, or who know what and when did they know.  We lost good hardworking men and women and innocent children on that day.  Remember that and show some respect instead of coming on here, calling names, and acting like a spoiled rotten ill-behaved 2 year old.
Thank you for sharing this story. John I can only imagine how hard it has been for you. Just know many people all over the world have been remembering what happened that fateful day. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. God Bless You!
Hey Wiriamu Guren...Your idiotic comments don't even deserve a response, go back to your cave with your brother Osama.  God Bless America!
I suppose the message from Guren was entered to get a rise out of the readers. Too bad we see right through him. My wife's childhood friend (Todd) perished aboard this airliner (he wasn't riding a missle).
Yes Wiriamu Guren, the pictures were made up, the plane was a hologram and Santa really does come down your chimney.  When you get back to Earth let us know and we will get together and buy you a ticket back to your planet.

On another note: don’t forget to thank a veteran! Only in America can you have this opinion and get away with it. If you were in the country that the terrorist came from you wouldn’t have the freedom to have this opinion.

SFC P.
God Bless
I have an idea. Let's honor the events of 9/11 without bringing politics into it. I'm talking to you, "Linda Nichols." Not a classy move.
I said this before and I will say it again...as a Nation we tend to go about our daily lives all too soon after a major tragedy.  I told a friend of mine back in 2003 "stay mad and never never forget".  These people are animals and they have no regard for the life of anyone who is not of their beliefs and background.  Age and gender means absolutely nothing to them.
Regarding Wiriamu Guren's comment, what planet are you from?  Or you need to go back on your meds.
So many opportunities in the short history of this great nation to honor courageous men & women who have sacrificed much... even to pay the ultimate price!  Is any one less important then another?  Each person has a name, family, story... but in common all are Americans!  How better to honor our heros/heroines but to live our lives to the fulless.  To forget is to dishonor... but to move on is living.  It's how we live our lives that determines who we are as individuals, and compositely as a nation.

The very core of our existence flows from God Almighty... not from any evil force which desires to destroy us in body, mind, and spirit.  That we would return to our First Love, the lover of our souls... then we and our nation would be healed... and how sweet the eternal reunion will be!

John, I am so happy to see you improve daily.  I was with you everyday that you went through all the medical procedures, you see at the time of the 9/11 attacks, I was in the U.S. Army, stationed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.  I was tasked to find out the names of all of the Pentagon victims and follow them from the lawn clear throughout their care.  I did just that, and I think that you were the last person to be discharged from the area hospitals, mid November or December timeframe.  I thank God everyday for my children and for the life that we have in America.  I think of you and the other victims of the Pentagon almost everyday and I say a prayer for all of you.  I have often wondered how you were doing, I am glad to see that you are healing over time.  Remember - that you and the others at the Pentagon will NEVER be forgotten.  God Bless you and America!
Get over it folks...terrorism is not an American tagedy..nor is John and American hero. There have been many survivors of terrorism the world over..in Belfast, in Bali, in London, Madrid. Almost no country has been left out of terrorism of one kind or another (an no folks, it is not all Mulim terrorism...rmember the Irish Republican Army? the ETA??) Util you stop acting like you "owned" the grief, you can never truly combat terrorism. My thoughts are today with victims of violnce all over the world, and with the brave survivors of terrorism, wherever they may be in the world!
To the STUPID idiot Wiriamu Guren, there was evidence of a plane, they found landing gear among other things. Last time I checked missiles didn't come with landing gear. Obviously you belong to the same mentalitiy of people who don't believe that Aushwitz existed either. Grow up and pull your head out of the sand.

As far as people forgetting what happened, the ones that will forget are the ones who really don't care about much else except themselves. We don't do a memorial service every year on Dec. 7 for Pearl Harbor, but that doesn't mean that people forget about it. I don't think we need to keep ripping the bandaid off every year. There are ways of memorializing it without rehashing it every year.
Wiriamu Guren and his comments are ridiculous! How could MSNBC allow this comment to be printed? Today is not the day to allow an idiot to air his opinion about what he feels did or didn't happen. I know my dad was almost killed that day, 7 years ago and how he has struggled emotionally and physically  since then. He is to be celebrated for his bravery and strength. I love you Dad!!
On MSNBC they reran their TV coverage starting with the Today Show coverage of the first plane going into the tower and continued running the footage until noon.  It was powerful to see it all over again.  To see it play out knowing what we know now, but seeing Tom Brokaw, Katie Couric and Matt Lawer work through what was going on until the pieces started to come together, then the realization of the enormity of what had happen.  Listening to Bush say how we'll get who caused this (and now seven years later, Bin Ladin is still alive, well, free and we, the US, are in a no-end war, economically struggling, etc., etc.).  I'm glad MSNBC ran that footage.  We should never forget that horrible morning.
I am still surprised this has not been designated as a Day of Rememberance, but then some stores would turn it into another reason to promote a sale.  So there probably is no reason to make it official, yet as an American I will never forget. I too was shocked that there was so little mentioned on the morning TV shows, especially because most of them air from New York.  Regis and Kelly, the Today Show etc.  maybe they should have spent the time interviewing those survivors or rescuers who felt they had something to say.
To Wiriamu Guren;

You sir are a moron.  Anyone who believes that conspiracy theory B.S. should just be labeled as too dumb to live and left in the desert to fend for themselves.  I have been wounded in the war resulting from this attack, and have watched friends get blown away in front of me.  This kind of idiotic rhetoric has no place in intelligent conversation.  Please go back to lining your house with aluminum foil, and leave the rest of us to our rememberances.
John:thanks for sharing your story, it reminds me to pray for survivors still struggling with recovery as well as for the families of those who died;I will not forget Sept 11th, we do not need to be emotional wrecks but we need to remember what happened ;I did not live during WWII but still remember their courage on Pearl Harbor rememberance day.
this message is for Wiriamu Guren: Conspiracy theorists making this claim ignore several facts:

The remains of the bodies of the crew and passengers of American Airlines flight 77 were found at the Pentagon crash site, and positively identified by DNA.
The flight’s black box was also recovered at the site.
Numerous eyewitnesses saw the plane strike the Pentagon.  Some saw passengers through the plane’s windows.  Missiles don’t have windows or carry passengers.
