Stabbings, blast injuries can’t keep soldier mom down

WASHINGTON - Army Staff Sgt. Tara Harrilson was wounded three times in Afghanistan, the first time when she was stabbed while on a Special Forces mission in 2004.

"I was outside the wire with my team, and it was pretty much – long story, short – it was a setup, and there were a whole lot of bad men and four of us," the 27-year-old native of Gaithersburg, Md., said recently.

Army Staff Sgt. Tara Harrilson at Walter Reed Medical Center on Sept. 26.

"I didn't realize it until afterward, but I had been stabbed several times from different angles while trying to get out of the area," she said. "I can't go into more details than that."

Tara was wounded two more times in a series of explosions in 2005. In one of them, some body armor was blown off a hook and landed on top of her head, herniating her brain into her neck and causing a spinal cord injury. She also suffered shrapnel wounds on her arms, legs and chest in the explosions.

"I've lost a lot of vision in my left eye, hearing in the left ear," she said. "I can use my left side pretty good, just not real fine, like to grip and open a bottle, and I've lost a lot of feeling in it."

‘A slow process’
Tara, who walks with a cane, is still recovering from her wounds at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

"I think I'm doing really good for someone who just had brain surgery," she said.

She faces possibly more surgery on her brain, surgery on her spine, and a lot of physical therapy.

"It's a slow process, and it can get frustrating," she said. "Some days are better than others."

One challenge is her lengthy commute for treatment. The closest affordable housing the Army could find for Tara and her family was at Fort Detrick in Frederick, Md., 50 grueling miles up Interstate 270 from Walter Reed.

"It's not the distance," she said. "It's the traffic that's the killer."

Tara has to allow two and a half hours in the morning to get to Walter Reed, and it can take up to two hours to get home at night. She can't drive because of her injuries and depends on her husband or her brother to get her back and forth as often as five times a week.

"It's really hard," she said.

‘A lot to be thankful for’
While she struggles to recover from her wounds, Tara and her husband are raising their three daughters, ages 2 to 7.

"Yes, all girls, and a lot of hair to do in the mornings," she said, laughing. "They've really sacrificed a lot, but they've been dealing with it real good, and they're interested in all the medical stuff that's going on with me."

Tara, who enlisted in the Army right out of high school, nine years ago, appears remarkably sanguine for someone who has trouble making ends meet on her Army paycheck and has no idea what's in her future.

"I'm getting to see my kids go to school and come home and swim in the pool, and that's a lot to be thankful for, because it could have been a lot worse," she said.

Why in heavens name is the army not providing transportation for her from Ft. Detrick? It is from one Army base to another for God's sake! Are we that calloused that we can't do everything possible to make this soldier's life marginally comfortable? Where is her platoon sergeant, platoon leader, first sergeant, company commander, battalion sergeant major, battalion commander, etc. on this one? This is bullcrap!
Why can't the military help our wounded soldiers when they are going for treatment.  It's appalling to me, they are just left on their own.  This same thing happened to my son who was wounded in Iraq and flown to Germany.  He was put up at a hotel with only 1 gym shoe they other foot and leg were wound wrapped , he had a pair of shorts and a sweat shirt.  That was it for clothing. The hotel was over a mile away from the treatment center and mess hall.  On crutches in the cold he had to crutch it to get to either place for treament or to eat.  There was no transporation provided or help.  It sickens me and makes me extremely angry.  I have two toher sons serving as well.  So that is 3 sons out of 4 that the military has from me.  I just want them to be treated with the honor and respect THEY DESERVE!! signed, Military Mom
God Bless you and your personal sarifice for our country! Just wish our govt was more accommodating for you and your family. Makes you wonder why they couldn't find a place closer to your medical help. If you were a senator they would!

A real All American hero.  Tara has more strength in her little finger than many of us whose lives she has helped protect. A pox on those who do not appreciate that.  I am so proud of her.
What a Mother/Warrior! Tara, you are my hero today.  You inspire gratitude and excellence in service, whether serving your country or a child.  I wish you every blessing and a full and speedy recovery. You are in my prayers.  AC.
Tara, thank you.
Thank you. Thank you for serving our country and thank you for doing that with honor.
My best to you Tara, you are what is right about America. Get well and be well. HOOAH!
God bless you lady.  From what I read, she's a strong hearted individual and I admire her strength to carry on.  God bless her family as well for assisting her in her daily needs.  She only deserves it.
God Bless You and your family!  Thanks much from a Marine mom who wasn't so very patriotic until now!
God Bless you Tara. Thank you for your service to our country. I pray for your recovery.
God Bless you and thank you for your service.  This is a call to action for all of us to support our troops in anyway we can.  Our freedom remains the most precious asset we all can claim as our own.  Don't forget that in these tumultous times.
What a great story of the human spirit, living life fully, and bravery. Tara Harrilson is why I'm PROUD to be an American.

She is a real winner!
I think Tara is one heck of a woman ,mother and soldier. She is an example of the average American who is putting their lives on the line every day for this country and their families. They all deserve our support and prayers for her recovery and the support she receives from her family. I did my time and an now considered to old to fight for our country and now rely on many like her to carry on.
I'm an Army Ranger Mom and I just want to say thank you for your service and wish you all the best with the struggles you are facing.  God Bless you, and your family, and may He contiune to  give you all strength and hope.
God bless you and your fellow soldiers for all you do. I hope that you injuries heal to the best possible out come and your spirit and heart stay strong. There are so many of your fellow countrymen who are grateful and thankful for all you do. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.
God bless that poor woman.  We owe all of our soliders, WAY better than what she is going through.
I for one am very proud of this young woman and I thank her very much for her sacrifice in protecting our country, She has dine something that a lot of people wouldn't even consider

Thanks from a free American Citizen
The military had better find some affordable housing in the area of Walter Reed Medical Center for soldiers just like Tara.   I am certain she is not the only one needing assistance while she is recovering.   This is totally unfair to her and her family.   Oh, but we can bail out AIG, Freddie and Fannie and the list goes on.    Step up to the plate Washington and do the job.
brave stuff!!
Instead of bailing out the greedy financial companies on Wall Street and rewarding their CEO's with huge bonuses and serverance packages, the government should be doing more to help our enlisted personnel like Tara.
I have never felt more compelled to speak. Ms. Harrilson is an example of the people that make this country great. He unselfish devotion to this country has changed her and her families lives forever. We owe these people a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid. We need to find a way to make sure she never regrets her sacrifice.
i thank you for all your sacrafice. all of my prayers and good thoughts to you and your family. you are a hero to me.
We are all very fortunate to to have people like Sgt. Harrilson serving and protecting our country. Thank You. Best wishes for you and your family.
SSgt. Job well done.

AMEN Anne!! God Bless you Tara and your family! America should be doing more for Tara!!! Thank You for your service!
God bless and keep and guide you through the rest of your trials.  Remember that with the God given qualities of time, patience and perseverance, all things may be overcome.   You're on your way!
From an obsolete combat Infantryman of WW II
Does it actually occur to anyone on this page it would be a good idea to not send Americans to fight in illegal and unnecessary wars so that people like this woman would not have her life ruined this way ?
remarkable.not only is she remarkable, but so is her recovery.she has sacraficed much and so has her family.why she is struggling with $ is shameful.not only should all her and her family`s health be covered but an adaquate stipened must be provided, including 4 yrs. free atany commonwealth college of her choice. i am sure she would graduate with honors.
Tara, you make me proud to be an American. I wish you well, we need alot more like you.
Thank you so much for what you have done for our country, Tara. It takes a lot of bravery just to leave your girls behind when you go off. I hope you recover quickly. May God bless you and your Family.
Tara, SERIOUSLY try to get in touch with reporter Bob Woodward. He is connected with ABC.COM  he may be able to help you with some of your immediate difficulties or put you in touch with someone who can. Since his recovery from injuries he received in Iraq he has been extremely involved with helping injured veterans to get adequate/logical assistance.
With your positive attitude all will work
Good Luck
FIRST LET ME THANK YOU TARA, AND YOUR FAMILY FOR THE SCARIFICE YOU HAVE GIVEN TO PROTECT US.  I ALSO WANT TO SAY THAT IT SADDENS ME GREATLY THAT OUR GOVERNMENT CAN'T TAKE BETTER CARE OF OUR SOLIDERS WHO HAVE BEEN WOUNDED AND GIVEN UP SO MUCH TO PROCTECT OUR COUNTRY'S FREEDOM. GOD BLESS YOU TARA AND YOUR FAMILY. I TRULY HOPE THE GOVERNMENT CAN HELP WITH YOUR TRAVELING BACK AND FORTH TO HOSPITAL.
God Bless You. You are a true American Hero.

Thanks,
Can't get any tougher than this! Thank you, Tara. God bless you and your family!
THANKS FOR TAKING TIME TO REVIEW THE MESSAGE. MAY GOD BLESS HER AS SHE IS AND WILL CONTINUE O BE IN OUR PRAYERS.   GO U.S.A.  GOD BLESS AMERICA
Doesn't sound like she should be treated on an outpatient basis. What if she were single, had no family, didn't come from the general area? Would they just say "oh well?" Totally unfair.
Tara, don't let anybody retire or discharge you from the Army until you meet, IN PERSON, a formal medical board to get your military disability and rating.  This is entirely separate from VA disability.  Fight, fight and fight some more for the money you have coming to you!!!!
FROM ONE FORMER SOLDIER (USMC RET) 1998 TO ANOTHER, I CAN ONLY SAY GOD BLESS AND GOD SPEED TO AND ALL OTHER SOLDIERS IN HARMS WAY, I HAVE BEEN THERE, IN 90 & 91 GULF WAR, WE WILL KEEP YOU IN OUR PRAYERS.THANKS FOR EVERYTHING. SIGNED GYSGT THOMAS
If you want to do something to help, there is a great group to help wounded soldiers called Sew Much Comfort, found at www.sewmuchcomfort.org.  They get volunteer seamstresses from all over the country to sew specially adapted clothing for wounded soldiers at all the major military hospitals in the US as well as in Germany, Iraq and Afghanistan.  As a new member I am really impressed with what this group does.
God bless you Tara. You sound like an amazing woman. The simple citizens of your country are proud of you and pray for your full recovery. From an x-marine Viet Nam vet.
This government of ours puts us in harms way and then doesn't do much to help us out when we are in need, I wish the it were different, becuase a wounded warrior needs a lot of help to heal, and our government should do all in it's power to help us out. It seems no one really cares how far you have to drive, even if you can drive, to get your medicial help. It is truely a shame. I wish you a speedy recovery, a life of good health and well being and may the Lord bless you in all you do.
tara, exemplifies the 7 army values-loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage.  Its a shame she has to do all of this with little help from the government.  But VA does not stand for Veterans administration, it stands for veterans angered over lousy treatment.  its always been that way and always will be.

Thank you for your brave service. Our government officials need to try harder in helping our wounded soldiers in their time of need.  Tara, God Bless you and your family for all that you've sacrificed for our freedom.
ALL I CAN SAY IS I PRAY THAT GOD WILL HEAR OUR PRAYERS AND ANSWER THEM QUICKLY...PLEASE PRAY FOR THIS BRAVE WOMAN AND HER FAMILY..LORD, REACH OUT AND TOUCH HER AND HER FAMILY, HEAL AND BLESS HER...AND LORD, WHILE YOUR AT IT, PLEASE SOMEHOW MAKE YOUR VOICE BE HEARD BY THOSE IDIOTS IN WASHINGTON DC...THE PEOPLE OF THIS COUNTRY NEED LEADERSHIP AND COMMON SENSE...I DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW TO PRAY FOR ALL THAT OUR COUNTRY NEEDS RIGHT NOW... I JUST KNOW WE NEED DIRECTION...FROM UP ABOVE....THANK YOU, LORD...
What saddens me is that it takes a war for people to realize what kind of dispair you find in military medical facilites and housing.  This has always been a problem, for not only the service memeber but their families as well.  Lack of proper services for GI's who come back from service a Tour of Duty, service members with special needs in thier families repeatedly having to go to doctors to be evaluated every time they chance duty stations in order to be considered for services they had access to before, lack of affordable housing, lack of medical attention need at a duty station.  I could go on and on.  Everytime military spending is cut so is the funding for services our military service members and their families need.  We need to remind our government the next time they want to cut programs for our service members that they were willing to spend 700 million to bail out financial institutions.  We need to remind our country that without the men and women who serve our country in the armed forces the rest of us would not be able to have the freedoms we do now.  May God Bless our service members, military spouse and families.
