Stabbings, blast injuries can’t keep soldier mom down

WASHINGTON - Army Staff Sgt. Tara Harrilson was wounded three times in Afghanistan, the first time when she was stabbed while on a Special Forces mission in 2004.

"I was outside the wire with my team, and it was pretty much – long story, short – it was a setup, and there were a whole lot of bad men and four of us," the 27-year-old native of Gaithersburg, Md., said recently.

Louie Palu/ZUMA Press
Army Staff Sgt. Tara Harrilson at Walter Reed Medical Center on Sept. 26.

"I didn't realize it until afterward, but I had been stabbed several times from different angles while trying to get out of the area," she said. "I can't go into more details than that."

Tara was wounded two more times in a series of explosions in 2005. In one of them, some body armor was blown off a hook and landed on top of her head, herniating her brain into her neck and causing a spinal cord injury. She also suffered shrapnel wounds on her arms, legs and chest in the explosions.

"I've lost a lot of vision in my left eye, hearing in the left ear," she said. "I can use my left side pretty good, just not real fine, like to grip and open a bottle, and I've lost a lot of feeling in it."

‘A slow process’
Tara, who walks with a cane, is still recovering from her wounds at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

"I think I'm doing really good for someone who just had brain surgery," she said.

She faces possibly more surgery on her brain, surgery on her spine, and a lot of physical therapy.

"It's a slow process, and it can get frustrating," she said. "Some days are better than others."

One challenge is her lengthy commute for treatment. The closest affordable housing the Army could find for Tara and her family was at Fort Detrick in Frederick, Md., 50 grueling miles up Interstate 270 from Walter Reed.

"It's not the distance," she said. "It's the traffic that's the killer."

Tara has to allow two and a half hours in the morning to get to Walter Reed, and it can take up to two hours to get home at night. She can't drive because of her injuries and depends on her husband or her brother to get her back and forth as often as five times a week.

"It's really hard," she said.

‘A lot to be thankful for’
While she struggles to recover from her wounds, Tara and her husband are raising their three daughters, ages 2 to 7.

"Yes, all girls, and a lot of hair to do in the mornings," she said, laughing. "They've really sacrificed a lot, but they've been dealing with it real good, and they're interested in all the medical stuff that's going on with me."

Tara, who enlisted in the Army right out of high school, nine years ago, appears remarkably sanguine for someone who has trouble making ends meet on her Army paycheck and has no idea what's in her future.

"I'm getting to see my kids go to school and come home and swim in the pool, and that's a lot to be thankful for, because it could have been a lot worse," she said.

Tears come to my eyes each time I here stories of our government failing to support our troops but yet we can sit and watch CEO get tremendous buy outs for failure to succeed. God bless you Tara and keep the faith.
I am an army mom and I am so very proud of my son and all of the men and women that serve to protect us. I am also very disappointed in the treatment of this brave soldier. She deserves much better than this. My prayers are with you Tara! Thank you for being one of our best. We love you all!
GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY TARA. OUR PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU AND I WILL BE CERTAIN SHOW THIS TO MY 15 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER YOU ARE IN INSPIRATION TO ALL.
Thank you so much for your service! God Bless you and your family! I Pray that you have a speedy recovery!!
You are a very brave woman, I have alot of respect for those who serve our country. I think our we
should do alot more for our injured soldiers than
we do. Take care Tara and god bless you and your
family.
Tara, your story really touched me. I am embarrased that our country is not taking better care of you. You are a hero and an inspiration. Thank you for your contribution to mine and every Americans way of life. You have sacrificed so much. God Bless you and your family.
As I read this story, I feel great pride for all the  soldiers who put thier lives on the line everyday. What a special soldier and mother. My son is 18 and also just starting his military career. I hope he is appreciated just as you are. God speed your recovery Tara.
An open letter to the members of the United States Congress.  If you can support the dredful waste of this nation's resources, both in terms of wealth and young lives, you are honor bound to provide those affected by their willingness to do their duty by all support possible.  All of us have suffered for the actions of a few ego maniacs in Washington but none so much as those whose bodies and minds are broken.  You may be very busy with trying to make sure you will be returned to the congress but please take time to read some of the comments here.  If you wonder why citizens are angry about this current bailout idea you may better get a sense of the mood that says let them fry in the oil they created for them selves.
How can anyone with a grain of compassion allow the thieves of wall street to walk away with millions while so many just plain Joe citizens are losing their basic needs for shelter and individual dignity? You bring shame on all of us.  So many people have lost their faith in government that a gesture toward recognizing them as important is needed.  To Hell with the money changers.  To not bail them out may hurt for awhile but it will be better in the long run.  If you reward them for being stupid and greedy now, what's to say they won't just do it all over again?  For that kind of mind enough is never enough and they will walk over anyone in order to count more toys than the next one.  For once try to do the right thing.
Tara, thank you from the bottom of my heart for being what and who you are. A true American and a true Hero. You are a shining example of what an American patriot should be. Washington DC, get off your fat behinds and do more, much more for our people in uniform!! Without them you wouldn't be around!!
You are my hero.  Thank you for telling your story. It is a story which, for some reason,  is all too often never talked about here in the US.  And there are over 30,000 other service members who have been officially listed as being injured in Iraq.  They each have a story also.  We’ll never hear theirs.

You have been through a lot, but consider yourself lucky that your mind was stable enough that you don’t also suffer from PTSD (about 30% of the 30,000 have it).  That you don’t have the extreme depression, anxiety and paranoia which will lead this group of injured soldiers to resort to alcohol and drug abuse. And of course, for many, suicide.

Like you, I also served my country in the Army.  I went to a few stressful schools which brought out a medical condition that would have remained dormant, if I had done something like be an engineer.  I successfully completed the schools, but after this illness became active, it became too much and I had to leave the service as a Captain.

The schools were Airborne School and Ranger School.  The illness is schizophrenia.

You are making the ultimate sacrifice.  Everyday.

You like me, know the meaning of "Freedom ain’t free".

Good luck,
Jimmy Stevenson
this story is  disgusting! how can the politicians justify spending BILLIONS on this good ole boy bail out and ignore our wounded and maimed vets? I can tell you why. they dont make 25 or thity million dollars every year to qualify for the right to ask for MORE.
It's a shame the way the government treats wounded vets.  They want our troops to defend the United States to the death, but god forbid they get injured, the Government can't look away fast enough!

The people in charge will never change, it's all about greed and money.  Too bad they'll never see these posts, it's a shame.  God Bless our Soliders!
Soldier, with people like you in our military we won't loose this war or any war.  You are what make this country great.  If the politicians would shut up and get out of the way this war would be over.  I pray for the best for you.

Instead of never ending payment of billions of dollars to people like Oprah, who bla-bla once in a while on TV (a job that you and I can do as well, nothing special there), the government should give that money to deserving great people like Tara, who is willing to give her life for this country. God bless Tara and all our heroes!
Damn it we have to come up 700 billion dollars to pay for a bunch of idiots on wall street  but we cant seem to find the funds to give our troops EVERYTHING and ANYTHING they need,  after all they have given in blood, sweat and tears!!!   Thank you Tara for all you have done for your country even for those on capital hill and wall st.  I'm sorry they couldnt do more for you!
God bless Tara and all of our men and women in the military. And damn those who don't support them.

I cannot believe that we have a government that is willing to spend billions of OUR tax dollars bailing out financial institutions, supporting CEOs who get paid $19 MILLION dollars for working three weeks, etc. Yet, we still have the city of New Orleans struggling to rebuild, soldiers who have given of their lives and their bodies but who cannot be given adequate support for their rehabilitation, and citizens of this country like in the Appalacians and the Southwest who live in conditions that none of these 'officials' would even consider letting their pampered pets use for a litter box. Shame on every one of them.

Rather than bail out these high-toned multi-millionaires, give every legal citizen of this country over the age of 21 a mere half-million dollars. Take out some tax, of course, and use THOSE tax dollars to bail out the crooks. Giving these morons money is like giving a fox the key to the chicken coop. They couldn't manage the money initially. Why think they can do a better job with MORE of OUR money?

I am ashamed of a country that can willingly support dishonest cheats like the former CEO of WaMu while our service men and women are treated like dirt. Give me a freaking break! $19 million for three weeks of work. Probably 90% of the citizens of this country won't get a chance to earn that in their entire lifetime.

If you aren't ashamed, I pray to God that you ARE ashamed when Judgement Day comes. If you are lucky, all of your money might buy you an air conditioner in Hell!
God Bless you Tara. Thank you for your service to our country. I pray for your recovery.
Is it possible that local church groups could arrange to drive her to these appointments. In GA we step up to the plate and assist folks in need of such help, whether by meals , transportation or just doing some of the chores. It's the least that could be done to assist folks with such heavy loads. Lead by example people!or your kids will never learn.
Thank you very much for serving our country. You are an inspiration to all of us. Your bravery is exceptional.
I read an article recently about the Olympic committee requesting extra funding from congress to pursue injured soldiers for the paralympic team.  i find it sad that we can ask for more money so that we can send a better team to the olympics, but yet can't adequately support the other 98% of wounded soldiers who have to return to a normal life.
Thank you to Tara and her family. My son is also in the military and had his right foot amputated, they expect him to hobble on one leg each morning to a building to report in and then he can hobble back to his room again after ten minutes. I think there has got to be more support and a bit of sympathy for our soldiers and their families.
Its amazing to me how the US Government treats its soldiers!! Its disgusting, I watch my husband fight the VA on an almost daily basis for just the basics. I cannot imagine going thru what this brave young woman has to go thru just to get treatment. WAKE UP!!!! Senators and Congressman, forget the damn Stock Market and take care of these men and women now!! I bet you couldnt take 2 steps in their shoes.
Stay strong Tara.....and be safe. Awsome family.  I thank you and all military serving.
Thank you for your service and, like many others who have responded, I too am horrified by the lack of attention our government is paying to those who have served.  As a Viet Nam vet who receives a disability payment for the wounds I received I consider my self fortunate.
Tara..You can find me via the webmasters here. I'm ready and able to move to ur area as ur personal driver/helper, free of charge. I am licensed, clean driving record, and hateful that our country would treat a wounded soldier, much less a operator, in this manner. The webmasters here can find an IP or email addy for ya hon. Lemme know. Im married, harmless, and ready to serve those who served in my place..OORAH Soldier
Mike Holloman
Thank you for your service.  You are a strong women and I will keep you in my prayers.
Take the money they were going to bail out those greedy bastards and use it to help our wounded soldiers!!~!
I read your story with tears in my eyes.  You are a real hero to me.  I am also a mom and also a military wife. I salute you and all the other military personnal who are serving our country to keep our country safe and "free".  I hope you make a full recovery...God Bless you and your family!!!
HEY WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THEM BRINGING 29000 OF THOSE PEOPLE HERE THAT YOU JUST GOT ALL THAT DAMAGE FROM.YES THE US IS BRINGING IRAQ REFUGEES HERE BY THE THOUSANDS AND NOT EVEN CARING THAT THERE DEPORTING AND TEARING AMERICAN FAMILIES UP WHEN THEY DEPORT THERE HISPANIC SPOUSES .WAKE UP AMERICA THERE ARE MILLIONS OF THESE PEOPLE COMPARED TO A FEW THOUSAND MEXICANS HERE YET THEY ARE PUNISHING THEM FOR SOMETHING THESE PEOPLE DONE AND GIVING THEM FREE ACCESS TO THE US WHILE WASTING OUR TAX DOLLARS DEPORTING THE MEXICANS.SEND THESE PEOPLE BACK TO THE COUNTRY THEY HAVE NO MORALS LEAVE THE MEXICANS ALONE THERE JUST HERE FOR WORK.
Staff Sargent Harrilson,
Thank you for taking the place of this old vet and standing in for my Son who plans to serve after college. I wish you well and hope that all of your beloved will get in as much schooling as they can. So they can develope skills they can use in many industries. We never know when something will disable us, or in what fashion.

I understand that it is not the Military that is making you drive so long, its the people of the United States that have not stood up and told the U.S. Government for more money. Money solely for the purpose of helping our wounded and recovering soldeirs.

God's blessings to you and your beloveds.
HooYah Tara, thanks and good luck with your recovery. God bless your kids and your husband keep the faith.
Thank you Tara for your Courage, your Bravery and your Patience with our systems in how we treat our Veterans.  I'm with others who've said "We NEED to DO SO MUCH BETTER" for you and others like you!!  Both Presidential candidates 'want' to make changes, I believe that improve the lives of our Veterans. It is up to us as Citizens to see that they live up to their stated aims.  Thank you Tara!!  Blessings to you and your family.  I only wish I had the abilities to be more helpful to you and your family.

Incredible!!! During The Vietnam mess, 100-500 soldiers?marines a day wounded and were attended to and now, they can`t get decent ANYTHING from the Government!!!!SCREW WALLSTREET and FUND the VA HOSPITALS and recompense these people who do a LOT more and worth more than any congressional FLUNKIES who ain`t WORTH the Over inflated Salaries and Egos they have...As a 22 years in Retired Marine, I just get plain sick of the treatment most of us are getting...So much for Tax dollars...
Semper Fi Tara...
Tara,

You are definately an American. You know how cruel
war can be and have served your country well. Thanks!
I would think that the military would take care of your transportation while you are getting treatments.
Its a shame that we are spending billions of dollars a month in the 2 conflicts we have, however we can afford to give transportation to a soldier that needs it the most.   Shame on the Armed Forces.
DE OPPRESO LIBER
Hey everybody. I am so glad you are supporting Tara, and I support her as well.  So could you please also take the time to tell you elected officials what you think about things like this.  We need to give them an ear full. So please let them know what you think.
Funny, the CEO of a failing company (WAMU)can get 19 million bucks for only 3 weeks worth of work!  yet a woman who has sacrificed herself for her country cant even get a home close enough to recieve treatment without making it extremely tough on her family!  I myself am a former recon marine and although proud to be an american HOW DARE and SHAME on the United States Government!
Thanks to Tara and her family for your sacrifice.  I agree that we should do more for our military men and women and less for the fools on Wall Street.  Those  needing medical care should have there $$ needs met to get treament they need.   I have 3 boys in the military and those of us involved in the day to day operation of military know that our boys don't have the support they need in more ways than this.  I hope and pray that we don't find ourselves in a spot where we have to find the $$ to take care of a wounded solider.  God Bless all of our service men and women.  A Marine Mom and Army Mother in Law
Like every other message....Thank you & God bless you!
I'm not too big on adding another nickle to this damn $700 Billion rescue, but adding another $10B, $20B or $50B to take care of Tara and all the real American heroes and their families seems a no brainer.
SHAME ,SHAME on the american government for their treatment of their wounded soldeirs just like the rest of the country is being forgotten ,with no health  ins. What happen to this  great country of ours .When europe and canada can and does provide for their citizens where is our tax monie going ? to senators , congressman and greedy bank institutions.thank you, too all our soldiers whom in the midst of this all, still have the heart to go to war for us and our democratic ideals  . God  bless you and keep you well.
Thank you Tara and your family!  You are very brave!
Lots of luck from a fellow female soldier.....but in the 50's we didn't have to go to war....you are very special.
Thank you, Tara.  You are an inspiring woman.  Our country should be doing more for our veterans and also making their healthcare easily accessible.
a Special Forces mission in 2004?
NO FEMALES in SF,Rutherford needs to do more research before he writes an article.

Tara, with this type of GREAT strength, I can't help but believe your daughters will learn to be strong leaders in their lives. You are an inspiration to all who know your story. GOD BLESS you and your family, for their sacrafice is phenominal as well!!!
Soldiers that have fought foreign wars or seen combat deserve to be taken care of to the full extent when coming home for sacrificing their lives so that we Americans can go on with our day, oblivious to the world's problems. I agree with you Anne. Instead of bailing out Wall Street, use that money to help those in need, especially these heroes and their families! It's disgraceful to see the state of our state & military hospitals. Shame on the corporate & political greed!
