Condi Rice knows – winners wear red

Posted: Tuesday, October 21, 2008 1:13 PM

Thanks to Mom, powerful people wear red.

Tiger Woods has said he wears red when he competes on Sundays, usually the final day of golf tournaments, because his mother told him it symbolizes power.

And Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said recently that thanks to her mother’s advice, she wears red when she wants "to feel really on top of things."

In an interview conducted with Girl Scout magazine in September and just released by the State Department today, Rice told a group of Girl Scouts that her favorite color is navy blue, but on some days she feels the urge to wear red.

Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska, speaks during a campaign rally on Sept. 29 in Ohio.

"I love navy blue," Rice said. "But when I want to feel really on top of things I wear red I wear red because my mother told me once ...when I was younger, I liked to wear pretty muted colors. And my mother said, ‘When you get to be 35, all of a sudden you're going to want to wear red.’ I had no idea what she meant, but she was right. So when I want to feel really on top of things, I wear red."

In fact, Woods and Rice seem to have gotten good advice from mom. A study done by British scientists in 2005 concluded that athletes who wore red were more likely to succeed than those wearing other colors.

Based on studying the outcomes of four sports in the 2004 Olympics, the scientists determined that wearing red was more than just a lucky hunch.

"We find that wearing red is consistently associated with a higher probability of winning," the researchers wrote in an article in the journal Nature.

And while red is the symbolic color of the GOP, did Rice pass her mother’s advice onto Sarah Palin and Cindy McCain? The vice presidential candidate and McCain’s wife have been frequently sighted on the campaign trail wearing red.

And the most important RED color we see daily is the huge budget deficit left by the GOP.  We have DOUBLED our National debt, while the DOW and other indices rose 50%.  So much for free market, don't tax the rich, trickle down Regan Econ 101.
The one person running in these pictures is John McCain...wearing blue.  There is too much put into images, voters need to do their own research.
Don't Democrats wear red? Why haven't they been included in this article?
I'm a Obama supporter and if you ask kids what color ribbon they are going for is blue.  Blue is 1st place and Red is second place.  But I would love to see a United States of America in a beautiful combination of those colors Purple the grand prize winner

This seriously is all that there is to talk about today?  Please.  More right wing propoganda.
GO RED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How did "the Redcoats" lose the War of Independence?
Go Phillies wearing your red.
Don't forget Nancy Reagan and red. She really put red on the fashion as well as political scene. Nancy wore it well too.
The Reagans added style and elegance to The White House that had not been seen since the Kennedy's. I miss those days.
Isn't red also associated with the devil?  Interesting.
Yes, because it takes a certain color of clothing to make yourself "feel on top." I would imagine that feeling could best be achieved after obtaining some sort of high public office ... Too bad Ms. Rice doesn't see to hold that same notion.
Actually, people who spend all day and night analyzing color will tell you that it often times inspires hate, violence, and anger.  Blue, on the other hand, is calming and cool, and represents peace and diversity.

Considering how many countries have red in their flags, it seems statistically insignificant to note that athletes that have red in their uniforms have a higher probability of winning.  That would include... USA, China, France, Japan, Canada, Russia...
of course they would wear red; the GOP color of choice. however, come nov 4th the US will be swamped with BLUE.
please msnbc give me a break, your article is grasping at straws,it just so happen, that all of the parties that are display in your article are members of the republican party.
I thought women wore red to be seductive and to get noticed because men associated red with sex and sin...  as a result, I understand that wearing red is a sign of being wild more than it is a sign of being powerful... did they really run statistics on people wearing red? there were studies? really? amazing...
Winners wear red.  Leaders wear blue.
I think this prediction is going to be true. Especially when Joe Biden predicts that an Obama presidency will be tested in 6 months of being in office. And he wanted all the supporters to stand with them when they 'respond with inaction'. I think Joe the Plumber makes more sense than Joe Biden. He said America is better when the soldiers are fighting in Iraq.

After 8 years of Republican rule, I know I'm seeing RED...
The color red has always been associated with power, hence the red ties men wear.
It must be a slow day if you are wasting time and space on this drible with all the important issues at hand.
We need to focus on how blue the country will be if John McCain wins, with all the cheating going on in the polls,,,what a sore loser , he has to cheat, that is what we all should be red about, yes, red with anger , us democrats!
lets wear green like th color of money lol
Sorry folks but history also tells us that the Romans and Spartans would wear red when going into battle.  This was because it made it difficult to determine when they were bleeding.  This may be the most apt explanation this year.
I thought 'Red' meant one of those dirty communists. Red is now the color of faces of our country's political and financial leaders. Red represents our present economic situation. The only time I like red is when it is next to white and blue.Red also represents anger, embarrassment, and frustration , lust, confusion and resentment. A negative color.
Why do so many of you have to make everything political? This is a story about a color, not politics. Get real! If you think Republicans have caused all the problems, look back at the Democrats history of tax increases, Social Security and frivilous spending!
This  all  may  be  so,  but  there  are  two  kinds  of  power:  evil  power  and  good  power. Jesus  wore  red  before red-clad  Pilate!  Can  you  bloggers  tell  the  difference?
The idea that red somehow makes one "different" is absurd with the singular exception that it makes one more visible. Police ticket Red cars at a rate 50% higher than all other cars because they tend to stand out in a field of grays, blacks, browns and blue cars, thereby highlighting themselves to inappropriate driving. Tells you something right there. Inappropriate is what I would call Rice and the Republicans of today. Inappropriate for America. Inappropriate for truth, honor, intelligence and trustworthiness.
Frivolous spending?  Like the 10 billion a month we are spending in Iraq?
Congress holds the checkbook, blame overspending on them and their earmarks, porkbarrel projects.  DNA on bears is a good example. The Dims already have over one trillion lined up to spend if the big Zero gets in. We should all wear black since since the economy is at grave site level.

As a young and brash American attending Oxford, I once wore a red tie to an academic event. One of my fellow students asked if I had any Labour Party affiliations. Why, because that political party made a point to use red as a statement, just as the Tory conservatives wore blue. The questioner referred to an old Cold War maxim: "Red under the bed." That is, a red tie in Britain signaled a secret Communist. So to avoid identification as a "Commie," I started to wear my striped college tie. Not to be outdone, here in America I am occasionally asked why my striped tie has the stripe leaning in the wrong direction. Can't win.
Red is also the color of blood ; spilt by so many brave young men and women for the lust of oil and power. Condi's policies contributed to this and it will be her bloody legacy.
I would have no problem with the Red States starting their own country...I am sick of their politics of resentment. It will be interesting to see hoew Palin redefines herself after losing this election...."Oh I would have done things differently..." we will hear about her version of how to ruin a campaign.
Palin accuses Obama of being a Socialist.  Socialists wear red don't they?

Expounding further on a comment made above, our forefathers wore blue during the revolutionary war, the redcoats were British.  Somebody please remind me.....who won that war?
Where is the picture of Mrs. Biden or Mrs. Obama?
I know for a fact that both have worn red......
There is a saying, "a monkey whatever wears gold, will be always a monkey" - so red does not count....either.
Red looks good on most people and it is a youthful, strong color. Is this really news?
