Covering Caylee Anthony – sensational and sad

Posted: Tuesday, June 16, 2009 9:40 AM

Orlando, Fla. – Orange County detectives believe 2-year-old Caylee Anthony was murdered one year ago.

It took about a month before her mother, then 22-year-old Casey Anthony, revealed Caylee was missing.

Cindy Anthony, Casey’s mother, dialed 9-1-1 and within hours, the saga began to unfold in dramatic, and at times, tabloid fashion.

VIDEO: Caylee Anthony's disappearance, one year later

From the deepest recesses of my memory, I can’t remember a human drama story that’s quite like this one.

The closest is the story of Elian Gonzalez.

I covered those developments from the moment the young Cuban boy was found on a raft in the Florida Straits, to the day he was forcibly taken by federal authorities from his Miami home, and finally to Elian’s eventual return to his father in Cuba.

Still, this murder investigation is different. Sensational, yes, but it’s always sad.

It’s important to remember, and it’s always on my mind: a little girl is dead.

Still, there are bizarre developments. Some you may have heard; others never went reported.

Here they are, in no particular order:

*There was the psychic who contacted NBC News to say she thought she knew where Caylee’s remains were.

She even sent us a video via the Internet pointing out the location.

It wasn’t news. Another crazy caller we figured.

Guess what?

We looked at the tape again after Caylee’s remains were discovered. Eerily, Caylee was found less than 200 yards from where the psychic sensed the 2-year-old’s presence.

When Caylee Anthony disappeared, there was a crush of media at the Anthony family home. Sometimes it became overwhelming for the Anthony family and their neighbors.

*A private investigator claimed he had footage proving Caylee’s body was moved into the woods where it was found months after her death. In a hushed conversation, he offered to sell it to us. I, of course wanted to see it first. That’s when he said he’d recorded over it. The tape now had pictures of his son in parade.

What then did he think we could do with the tape?

"I hear there’s a way to get the previously shot video that’s under the parade," he said.

Ha! Well, maybe Chloe O’Brian can do that for Jack Bauer on the TV show "24," but in the real world it just ain’t possible.

*Another private investigator said he was told Caylee’s remains would be found by locating a marker. He said his sources told him there were pavers piled up in the yard nearby Casey’s home. Those pavers would signal the location of Caylee’s body.

With camera crew in tow, the PI revealed the mysterious pavers. In the end, they were left-over materials from a construction job. Hardly a marker.

*The first word that a piece of duct tape was over Caylee’s mouth came from a neighbor who overheard a two-way radio conversation. Law enforcement sources confirmed it was true, so I reported the details. But had someone kept that detail off a two-way radio, it might have not been known publicly for weeks, or longer.

*Casey Anthony found her defense attorney Jose Baez in jail. Another inmate gave Casey a tip: Baez is a legal eagle, the expert she needed.

One phone call later, Baez took on the biggest case of his career.

When Caylee Anthony disappeared, there was a crush of media at the Anthony family home. Sometimes it became overwhelming for the Anthony family and their neighbors.

*A one-time spokesman for Baez operated in secret. Yes, a public relations expert who was never seen and we never met.

It’s odd, but the spokesman known as "Todd Black" was not a real person. He was really Gil Cabot. The enigmatic Mr. Black (Cabot) was always in the shadows. He would not use email. He would only fax, and the number on his fax machine was gibberish. When he called you, his phone number was blocked on caller ID. He never answered his own phone. He had a voicemail box right up until the day attorney Baez fired him.

*Roy Kronk, the meter-reader, who repeatedly told deputies he thought there was something odd in the woods where Caylee’s body was eventually found, offered to sell a picture of a dead snake.

"A snake?"

Yes. A snake!

It was supposedly a snap shot of a snake they’d found when Kronk and others, including a deputy, entered the woods to follow up on Kronk’s suspicion that there was something important to the case in the woods.

Why would anyone want that snapshot?

It’s unclear, but he found a media buyer who allegedly coughed up several thousand dollars for the picture.

*A make-shift memorial to Caylee was established just 50 or so yards from where her body was discovered.

Photos. Teddy bears. Poems.

As it grew, it began to weather in the sun and the rain.

Yet more teddy bears were dropped off.

Soon, a news producer inserted himself in the question: What to do with the memorial?

He decided, after talking to Caylee’s relatives, the toys should be donated to a homeless shelter.

It didn’t take long, in fact it may have been just minutes, before the news producer found himself being verbally attacked. Who was he to decide this?

This memorial is for Caylee!

Cameras rolled, and that producer was no longer the observer, he was the story.

He eventually backed off, but not before learning a tough lesson: His role was to report, not participate.

* In the early days of coverage, reporters and camera crews surrounded the Anthony home 24-hours-a-day. Sometimes there was no way for a cameraman to escape to do what everyone has to do. At least one enterprising neighbor figured that was opportunity. He charged for the use of his bathroom.

* Some of the Anthony neighbors were not happy about the circus-like atmosphere: camera crews, trucks and chaos in their neighborhood. I’m pretty sure if it were my neighborhood I wouldn’t be happy with the crowd either.

One news producer made a peace offering to neighbors: gift cards to the movies and a restaurant. Soon other producers were making similar offers and the simmering anger harbored by neighbors seemed to lift.

One Anthony neighbor was not happy with the media crowd. It’s understandable. His yard was trampled. His grass began to die. He began to patrol his lawn, right up to the public right-of-way, a sidewalk. If anything was on his yard, he’d yell. I was scolded for having half of my foot on the sidewalk and half on the grass.

I moved.

Another TV network decided to just pay for the right to stand on his lawn.

Last I saw, some of that money must have been used for sod because the downtrodden lawn looks full and green.

* With no way to leave positions outside the Anthony house, as news could break any moment, one enterprising Orlando caterer made a kind gesture. She brought her tasty treats to the news crews and fed them for a day.

The meal was fabulous. It was an odd juxtaposition: a missing child, likely murdered, and fine food including sweet walnuts.

* Leonard Padilla, the black-cowboy hat wearing, toothpick sucking, bounty hunter from California, repeatedly said he didn’t want to be on TV. Yet, he was always near to the spot where there was a development. Every time after saying he didn’t want to talk to the media about the case, he would follow up with a 10 to 20 minute "press conference" on his observations and thoughts.

*It’s estimated the murder trial is at least one year away. Now 23-year-old Casey Anthony is charged with killing her own daughter. If convicted, she could be sentenced to death.

It is pathetic to see how many people have used Caylee's death to benefit themselves in one way or another.
Sadly, some of the rest areas in Florida still have pictures of Caylee as a "missing" child. I guess keeping those boards up to date isn't the priority that one would hope it is.
What a beautiful child. how could anyone hurt her. I do not understand how a mother could kill her own baby. My daughter is 17 and sometimes i want to beat the shit out of her. but i know that is wrong and i love her so much but she can make me mader than anyone,
Anyway, I hope they find her innocent and find the real killer because I do not see how she could kill her child or any child.
Seriously what kind of person would do this to their own child. Does she not realize that so many people that would be good parents can't have kids and then some kids actually die in accidents or from sickness who gives her the right to be god and take the life away from a tiny little girl. seriously this woman is sick you know she did it look at the facts she didn't tell anyone her own child was missing for a month messed up i'm tellin you she needs death to see what it feels like getting all the life drained from you
Shortly after this story broke most of us figured the mother killed her.  Speculation on how is that Casey was going out partying and no sitter so she put Caylee in the trunk of her car and to sleep with Cholophorm and she probably suffocated. But then to just put your child in a garbage bag and toss her in the words is despicable and the death sentence is just what she should get.
it seems that our country is in the middle of an unprecedented epidemic of mothers who think their children are burdens and either abandon or murder them...
It certainly has been a media circus but we should ask ourselves why do we still clamor curiously at these type of investigations? The ScottPeterson's murder of an unborn child, Andrea Yates murder of 5 children, Jon Benet' Ramsey, etc. Is it because we were told in the Bible whoever does harm to a child will pay the ultimate punishment. It is the most heinous of crimes in a society to do harm to the innocent's yet our justice system tends to rationalize the reasons behind it.  The lawyers seek the fame of a trial and of course the media sell tabloids.  But the innocent are still destroyed and I know I cry every time I hear a story of one more that perished at the hands of a psycho be it there own flesh or some stranger.  How dare they think they will ultimately get away with their deed.  If fallable human judgement doesn't punish them then I know another being that will have the final say.  There are millions watching everyday, crying out for justice for those who have no voice and the same goes for abortions in this country.  We kill the innocent of innocent's and let the murderer's go free.  Are we really a society of death with its members simply sitting by and watching the circus?
I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO KNOW WHY THE METER READER GUY

NEVER CHECKED OUT THE GARBAGE BAG HE SAW AND REPORTED

TO POLICE ON THREE OCCASIONS....THIS SEEMS VERY

SUSPICIOUS TO ME.  HOW CAN THE POLICE IGNORE REPORTS

OF THIS KIND ON AT LEAST TWO OCCASIONS ?  IT SEEMS

UNACCEPTABLE TO ME THAT AT LEAST TWO MONTHS PASSED

BEFORE THEY FOUND THAT PRECIOUS CHILD'S REMAINS.  I

WONDER HOW MUCH EVIDENCE WAS LOST, AS WELL AS THE

CAUSE OF HER DEATH.  GOD BLESS BABY CAYLEE .  AT

LEAST SHE'S WITH OUR HOLY FATHER IN HEAVEN....
Note the common denominator in nearly every paragraph of the article....the press. The "bizarre developments" noted with apparent distain by the reporter were 100% media driven.
I firmly believe Cindy Anthony is just as capable of being the killer. She hates her doughter, called the authorities, spoke at her job of "the nanny", and is overall, a domineering bitch.
I don't understand why the media prays on these types of events. People like Nancy Grace get famous and rich by sensationlizing the death of a little girl, and then gets to use valuable network time showing everyone her precious twins at the birthday party.

How about the missing African American girl that's been missing in the Bronx? How about her family that barely survives. Where is all their coverage and their hype.

How many other cases are out there where there is no coverage, why does the media focus on just one case?

It's called greed. The media finds one case to focus on and everyone jumps on the bandwagon.

Let poor Caylee rest in peace. Let law enforcement move on and do their job an let's focus on all the other missing children out there.

I wonder if she killed that child by accident or deliberately killed her and what was her motive. Stop glorifying and making news from these heinous crimes and start eliminating the sources, literally.
Ok Kerry, interesting potpourri of snippets, BUT...

Are you really clueless about why there was a media purchase of a snake picture?? C'mon, we ALL know that was a ruse to pay for the Kronk interview while continuing to insult the intelligence of the audience with phony denials that no such payments are made!!!

Looks like you're gonna be the NBC point person on this case. Those who follow the case with diligence and intelligence would ask you to keep it real. We're tired of the media treating us like dopes and whitewashing the Anthonys role.
I know my comment will probably be ripped to shreds. But i feel so bad for George and Cindy. They have endured so much criticism yet they had nothing to do with Caylees death. They are standing by their daughther because they dont want to believe that she really killed her. And i dont blame them. They just lost their grandaughter and now they will lose their daughter. I know Casey is guilty. We all know she is. But George and Cindy have a right to believe otherwise and we shouldnt judge them. Everyone deals with pain differently.
It is so sad and angering to hear of a child's murder. More so, when it's a parent that has done the hellish deed. I look at my daughter everyday and thank God for the blessing he has given me. I don't understand how a mother can look at her blessing and then just toss it away like it was worthless. It is so good to know that Caylee is now in the loving and protecting arms of God, and she will never have to experience any pain or sadness ever again.
I would like to know her reaction when she was told that her child's remains were found.  She looks cold hearted and she is lying through her teeth.  Even if she accidently killed her child lying is only making it worse.  Bad enough she was out parting with her friends for a month before she even said that her baby girl was missing for that amount of time.  If she is convicted whe should move straight from the defense table to the death table.
And I don't think she should be given the death penalty. That is an easy way out for her. I think she should be given life in prison without the possibility of parole so she can live with the guilt and pain of what she did for as long as God let's her live.
I'm deeply saddened by this case.If the mother is convicted of murder her death will not bring little Caylee back, but she most certainly deserves life in prison without parole.
I've been following this story too, since it's beginning.  And it is a strange one.  I didn't know all this stuff went on BEFORE a trial.  Stuff such as Baez wanting phone records of anybody he can think of!!  And that Leonard Padillia - he's on the Nancy Grace Show all of the time, for someone who doesn't want to be on TV!  And what about the psychic who contacted NBC and then turned out to be correct?  What did you guys make of that?  George and Cindy Anthony with their spin.  Like we don't remember what they said and did in the beginning!!  Now they are trying to make their killing daughter out to be MOTHER OF THE CENTURY!  Haha!  The entire story is like a soap opera.  Even the way it unfolds, so slowly!  I'm ready for the trial. I'm ready for Casey Anthony to fry.  I'm ready to see her Mother charged with something, obstruction of justice or something.  I'm ready for it all to be over.  I cannot stand a liar!!  Casey, George, and Cindy are all liars.  One more thing:  If that were my daughter, not only would I not be by her side, I would have killed her in the beginning, and that's the Holy truth!
One can only hope that this little girl is resting in peace in Heaven and that the person (or persons) responsible for her death are brought to justice and get what they deserve for doing what they did--that's more than Caylee received.

I have always felt from the begining that Caylee was left too long in a car and when discovered by Casey, she panicked and someone helped her attempt to hide the facts. (grand parents and/or friend)
Having two children of my own, I can't imagine such a tragedy.  However, the media circus, speculation, and crazy outsiders make this even a more sad situation.  Capitalizing on the death of a child angers me.  I agree with the writers comments...media should report, not participate.
Poor Caylee.  Thank you for the little memoir.  Most of this I already knew, but some of it I didn't recall.  I can't imagine what it must have been like for all of the reporters when her body was found.  I was on the edge of my seat always hoping that somehow she really was kidnapped and still alive.  As time went on and I saw how Casey reacted to everything, I just knew in my heart that Caylee was gone.  I am glad that they found her though and she received a proper burial.  No human deserves to be tossed out like trash.
i guess  this contract journalist lost me with a comparison to elian gonzales of cuba.  two very different scenarios.  mch of what he attempts to synopsize is correct, but it somehow got lost in the lead and first paragraphs.  i mean, go back to school. The Anthony girl is about much more in America and teenage mothers, than immigration.  no focus.  again, go back to school rather than halk a story to the nets..
Thank you Kerry Lewis for a very precise look at this cluster of a case. Keep up the good work.

Water boarding was good enough for inmates at Guantanamo.  They should have made an exception with Casey Anthony after the first week of her not cooperating with authorities.  It might have gotten to the truth real quick, though it would have denied Nancy Grace and her gang of sensationalizing this story for months and months.
I just hope that justice prevails and if she did murder her daughter that she pays with her own life. If she was unable to care for her child why not just give caylee to her grandparents? They would have gladly adopted her and she could have continued her life. This is such a sad case since so many lives have been ruined forever.
Seems like everyone was trying to make "their dollar" off this poor child's untimely death.
I have followed this case closely from day 1.  If you looked up the word "angel" in the dictionary, you'd find a picture of Caylee.  What a shame Casey's family is still standing by her.
Why is it that all of these over-hyped cases about lost children and lost women are all about whites?  Don't African-American children get lost too?
she should go way beforeanother year passes !!!!!!!!!
This poor excuse for a woman had no business being responsible for the life of a precious young child. As unfortunate as this is, ther are many cases of sub-humans raising children and the children turning out rotten. Nothing can be done to stop them.
This is a sad sad story. Gob Bless Caylee. Yes this is a circus tabloid and fiction like. This only happens in the movies, so we thought. There are to many coincidences ans how can any loving mother/grandmother wait a whole month before reporting that a baby is missing... I think they know what happened, in addition I think Casey did it. Justice will be served in the end. If she did not do it she knows who did (guilty) if she did it (guilty) either way I pray that God will have mercy on her soul.
What a circus!  This Casey Anthony truly is a monster.  I hope justice is served.
I'm a waitin to hear Casey's side of the story. I figure if whe's a willin to go on Jerry Springer and stand up to a beatin, then maybe she aint the devil after all. But I dont know why some high tootin woman who dont live in no trailer home went and killed her own blood. If I was her mother, I'd take a hickory stick and lay it upside her head until either she was dead or the devil come out. But there aint no bringin back that little girl. Bless her little heart. Only Jerry Springer and God can help her now. Duz anyone no when that there woman iz gonna be on Jerry Springer?
My heart goes out to the family of caylee. One thing to remember is Caylee is with Jesus and will never be hurt again.
Human beings, what strange characters we are.
I don't understand how someone could kill their child.  Why wouldn't you just give it up for adoption?  It's stories like this that make me believe abortion should not be abolished.  Just imagine if you couldn't have an abortion.  How many stories like this would we hear about then?
I can't even believe you'd compare the murder of a young child to the case of Elian Gonzalez who was sent home to live with his father. How can you compare the death of Caylee with an illegal child being returned to him home--healthy? I hope you don't have any children if you would think their deaths were equel to living in another country with a parent. Get real!!
If only they would change the law to dictate that not only the mother receives the death penalty but also anyone of any relation to the mother.  After about another year of murders/rapes, etc, eventually all evil would be rid of the planet and only my family would be left.  Hope you choke.
This family is pure trash.  They are all worried about how they look on TV.  They never talk about the baby- only their problems.  The mother is guilty for simply not reporting the baby missing-- she should go to jail forever simply for that.  The grandmother and grandfather know what happened-- now that revel in the publicity.
Rest In Peace Caylee Marie, it has been one year since you were taken from this Earth.  One day we will be with you in Heaven and we will know your story.  You have touched so many hearts with your untold story.
I think that TV has alot to blame with all the sex, killings, and theft going on and on and on! 40 years ago two of my little children hung themselves by climbing up to the window sill, putting their heads through twine hanging from a brooder house ceiling and jumping.  Thank Goe the twine broke. They had cuts from ear to ear and bled alot.  When asked why they did that they said, "Red Skelton, did it!  And he was okay! They had seen Red skelton do that and then he came out on stage with the noose around his neck and said, "Ha! Ha! See, I didn't kill myself!" And laughing!  Poor joke to say the least!!
Is it so bad if more people are killed for their crimes... an eye for an eye? Maybe so many crimes wouldn't happen if we had a little more to be afraid of?
Too bad our sad country that is getting sadder by the day doesn't change the laws for the good.  Instead all of FL will probably pay top dollar to keep her on death row for years and years and years.
It actually got to be kind of funny, my husband and I would turn on Nancy Grace every night for a minute, just to make sure she was still talking about Caylee.  And she was... for months... every day... now she's moved on to another little girl.  I can't see how Casey can get a fair trial anywhere in the united states with the state of FLA releasing every bit of info they have to the media.
To those who use the words "beautiful child" in describing Caylee Anthony:  would this case be less heinous if she had been an "ugly child"?  And, unfortunately, this is what drives the media: "beautiful" people, according to the 'standard' of beauty by most of the US --- white, blonde or near blonde.  It is a shame.
