Outside the U.N., many welcome Gadhafi

Posted: Wednesday, September 23, 2009 3:25 PM

NEW YORK – Yussif Ali did not mind waking up at 2 a.m. this morning to come from his native Boston to Dag Hammarskold Plaza, next to the United Nations, to support a world leader he respects.

"I set aside two doctor appointments today to come see [Moammar] Gadhafi’s first time visiting the United States. To me, he’s a hero," the union carpenter said.

While many Americans associate Gadhafi with the terrorist bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland in 1988, (Libya formally admitted responsibility for the attack in 2003), Ali and hundreds of others who gathered across the street from the U.N. on Wednesday have a very different view of the Libyan leader.

Supporters of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi watch a broadcast of his address to the United Nations General Assembly at Dag Hammarskold Plaza in New York on Wednesday.

"I’m a black American and taking lives of innocent people is wrong and unforgiveable and I see no excuses," said Ali, who has been a member of The Nation of Islam for more than 25 years. "But I don’t believe Col. Gadhafi gave anyone a direct order. You have a lot of radical people you can’t control."

An imposing phalanx of hundreds of Nation of Islam supporters dressed in dark suits flanked the walkway that led to a podium at the end of the plaza. A large JumboTron television had been set up to allow those assembled to watch Gadhafi’s speech to the U.N. General Assembly.

After the speech, many left inspired, including Abdush Shahid, a police officer from Newark, N.J. "This is the beginning of the history of Africa. Under the leadership of Gadhafi we begin to unify under one banner." Shahid was clear that he was not a member of The Nation of Islam. "I am a Sunni Muslim, and there is no separation – we are all brothers."  Shahid believes Gadhafi as a leader who is unifying millions of Africans and their descendants into one community.

On the other hand Earl Dickinson, a 75-year-old retired tractor trailer driver who also traveled from Newark, had a much more practical reason for supporting Gadhafi.  "He gave $2 million to [Louis] Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam." Dickinson said it was Gadhafi’s support and connections which helped Farrakhan, the leader of the Nation of Islam since 1978, expand his organization and disseminate his message.

In fact, Farrakhan met Gadhafi at Libya’s mission in New York on Tuesday to welcome him ahead of his first ever appearance at the U.N. after 40 years as the ruler of the oil-rich North African nation.

And Alonzo X, a serious and mature-looking high school senior, traveled from Connecticut to witness the Libyan leader’s U.N. speech. When asked whether they received any payment or remuneration for coming, Alonzo and others said they volunteered to come to New York as soon as they heard the news of Gadhafi’s visit.  "I wasn’t paid to be here," said the young man in the somber suit. "God is paying us."

Read "The Trail of the Octopus" by ex-DIA agent Lester Coleman, who had to seek asylum in Sweden for a while before he was repatriated to the U.S., given judicial amnesty from the Federal charges against him, and placed under a gag order.
Gadaffi had very little, if anything, to do with Lockerbie.  The DEA, via their Nicosia, Cyprus office, were importing heroin from the Bekaa Valley into the U.S. via London on a weekly basis on PanAm 103, and due to the collateral lax security at Frankfurt, the bomb was placed on the plane, certainly not by Libyans.

Coleman had warned the U.S. Embassy ahead of time that a disaster was imminent because this rogue operation was widely known.
Hopefully visiting the United States and speaking at the United Nations will encourage the sort of discourse and policymaking that will lead to real peace among nations. It is unfortunate it took 40 years to get to this point- maybe lockerbie and other terrorist acts could have been avoided if developing nations were more aware of the direcion the United nations was taking to promot peace and end war on this planet and its concessions to provide homes for the victims of terrorism from other parts of the world in the 1940s agreed to rather than ignored and  a million Palestinians made homeless as a result who were not nazis. Both sides need to quit trying to fight each other and peacefully live in the Middle
East as descendants of Abraham in the manner God wanted and respect each others different religions as given by God and work to protect each other from fighting from outside the region.
These folks are misinformed. Gadhafi is a manaical and egotistic man. He has not done anything to improve the lives of Libyans after all these years. I am even more suspicious of his intentions as far as the African Union goes. I think the Arab Moslems are only conveniently Africans when it serves their purpose.
good to see a positive story - I am tired of this demonizing of Gaddafy - the familes of Lockerby need to get over it and get on with their lives - they cant change whats happened so try to accept it and move on for heavens sake!!
An egomaniac, delusional dictator hero for egomaniac delusional supporters.  A match made in heaven (or hell).
Right on Bosah
I'm shocked that people actually think this man has any good in him or any right to be here. Gadhafi killed Americans and these folks flock to see him? Very anti-American. Disgusting!!
those people are not informed about this opportunist. how came is country rejecting africans immigrants from is country . He is not the one who wants Africa to be unified instead he wants to use his power to control Africa.I promise it will be a big mistake from African leader. This man can not change. He is a joke.
I believe any peoples that gather together to praise and honor a terrorist while living in the USA, are against the USA and should be treated as such and deported!
Bush did worse than Ghaddafi, yet he is welcomed by many people here in America. It was George Bush who went and bombed innocent Iraqis and killed hundreds of thousands people. If we can tolerate George Bush, we can certainly tolerate Ghaddafi
Hey James from Arizona - you are one insensitive bastard. Obviously you have never had a relative taken away by the acts of others. I am appaled that all these so called " world leaders" from some of the most opressed regions of the world come and exercise the very same freedoms they negate their fellow citizens. Every one who considers this maniac a hero - should be shipped to Lybia so that they may experience what their folk hero preaches!
Tony thinks the DEA imported heroin into the US. Another conspiracy whacko! Besides, I always heard it was the CIA. Bored Americans will believe anything
king of kings? don't make me laugh! he's just amother sick dictator, a sick former terrorist and a  clown  who is trying to make another dictator out of our us president barack obama. to some he's a hero because he gave them 2 million dollars perhaps to make some trouble on american soil.that tells a little bit  about this man.the sooner he'll get out of american soil the better off we'll be.
He's against the U.S.A

He questions our acts against terrorism.

He accuses us as an enemy would.
Out of his mouth flow hateful words which reveal where his heart stands.
If you love this country and the liberty it gives then being proud of this man should be to you intolerable.
James, Arizona you are a monster. How would you like it if someone killed your entire family in a terrorist attack? Would you get over it anytime soon? Remember President Regan and the F/B-111 attacks because of his "Line of Death". This moron deserves as much respect as Stalin or Hitler. Remember he LIED about his countries involvement for so many years while the moron was PROTECTING the GUILTY that actually did it. Get over yourself James.
Once a terrorist always a terrorist.  Murder is murder. Gadhafi is a dictator and an evil man.  May the souls of his murder victims rest in peace. He will answer for his sins.
It is not easy to get over the pain from loss of life for no reason, but when one accepts the compensation for ones loss, he forfeet the right of protesting anymore. That is settlement. It is obvious that these ralatives need consolation not the support for protesting.
May be some psychologist can help them.
So Gadaffy doesn't like the Preamble to the UN Charter.  And, he cares little for the setup of the Security Council.  I sure as hell don't see him offer a substitute Preamble or a proposal to re-vamp the Security Council.  If he is truly the self-proclaimed leader for Africa, then show us the concensus of the African States, and put his alternative on paper instead of rambling like a spoiled 4-year old.  His comments are proof positive why nothing meaningful ever comes from the General Assembly.  No substance whatsoever.
I am an African American woman who watches MSNBC for my news because you are more fair and balanced then any other news outlet besides C-SPAN on Television. I like many other Americans of African descent respect  Moammar Gadhafi, because of the positive way he has invested his countries wealth to help struggling African nations. He has objected to European nations and the United States raping, stealing and controlling the natural resources of African nations such as in the Congo. He has watched the CIA and foreign governments overthrow and assassinate good African leaders because industrialized nations want to reap the wealth of Africas resources through colonalization and destabilization. Most Americans do not know anything about African History therefore they can not hold any objective view about Gadhafi. Please study history.Gadhafi is not a Islamic Fundamentalist terrorist. He is a respected African leader. Thank you so much for screening his entire speech I was so proud to see this African leader get the media attention he deserves, and I will continue to depend on MSNBC for my news and opinions.
Qadhafi has done a lot for the African continent and rightly so as Libya is an integral part of it. There are many dictators in the continent who steal and pillage the resources of their countries. If Qadhafi is a dictator at least he is a benevolent one...I don't have any problem with that as long as the vast majority are allowed to live peacefully and cared for by their state. One really needs to talk to working classes in Libya and it is just as apparent that this man knows how to look after his people. Libyans are one of the wealthiest people on earth.

As for the families of the victims of Pan Am flight....I'd say that they had settled with Libya through the compensation they received and for them to drag on their grievances is really tiring. They should move on as painful as it is for them to suffer the loss of their loved ones.
IF THESE PEOPLE LIKE GADHAFI SO MUCH WHY DON'T THEY JUST PACK UP AND MOVE TO HIS GODLESS COUNTRY!WE CERTAINLY DON'T NEED OR WANT THEM HERE IN AMERICA!
Amazing country! Now imagine Libyan-Americans demonstrating in the streets of Tripoli against Gadhafi? Can't imagine it happening or being allowed??? Welcome to America and if you don't like the policies, the people or the customs, go to Libya, maybe you can get a job, live comfortably and protest the policies there too. Can't imagine that either, can you? America, land of the free, because of the brave. I completely disagree with the demonstrators, but respect their right. I hope none of them support any distardly terrorist groups.

While our country supported apartheid South Africa (Cheney even lobbied against Mandela's freedom) and supported aparthied "Rhodesia" and tyrant regimes while Libya/Gadhafi use his nations oil wealth to support the Africa's freedom struggles against those regimes. These are but a few reasons why Gadhafi was elected President of the African Union but if you choose to remain ignorant you will forever be perplexed.

We in America are like spoon-fed sheep when it comes to news, especially foreign afairs. Follow Tony's advise and read a book! "The Trail of the Octopus" obliterates the false notion that Libya was responsible for the Lockerbie plane bombing.
Lybia had nothing to do with the Pan Am bombing. this a mossad OP. Gadhafi was blackmailed by the US to admit to the bombing if Lybia wants to be part of the world community and removed as a terrorist state. However, Israel and the US as done worse, nothing is mentioned of the US navy ship the USS Vincennes shooting down an Iranian airline killing 290 Iranians civilians in July1988 . Nothing is said about the continuing Israel oppressive occupation of Palestinian land the killing of 1,400 Palestinians in Gaza mostly civilians
@Tony Craddock, Santa Barbara, Ca
Lester Coleman admitted that he made up the entire 'story'. You can refer to the NY Times story: Informer Admits Lying In Pan Am Crash Case. http://www.nytimes.com/1997/09/12/nyregion/metro-news-briefs-new-york-informer-admits-lying-in-pan-am-crash-case.html Try using Google sometime. It only took me about one minute to find the story.
The nation of Islam, a lunatic fringe of America supports the lunatic leader of Libya. A match made in heav.. excuse me..hell.
As usual the Jew haters must love Farasyoucan and Gladflyee. Extermination - let it go to Orkin not extremists who value no human life.
Here's an idea--why don't the devoted of Farrahan the bowtie pimp nazi who love Kaddafi so much move over to his country--we'd be rid of a lot of vermin all at once and the muslims would be with their murdering muslim brothers and we wouldn't have them messing up our sidewalks with their filthy presence.
The United States is a decent and moral nation. Why has not one credible voice expressing remorse for the death of Mr. Qaddafi's 4 year old adopted daughter that died in the most expensive assasination attempt in history. Are Libyan lives less valuable than American lives on Pan Am 103? Was she innocent or not? Too bad huh? We live in the U-S-A (United States of Amnesia). We should file class action suits against our local school districts for the massive miseducation and dumbing down of the American people.
OMG ... if this is what some people see as a 'unifier" of African nations, lord help all the good people on that continent.
I attempted to watch and listen Libya's leader Moammar Gadhafi, was absolutely impossible and I simply had to turn off the television. I could not listen any longer. The interpreter even had trouble making sense of what Gadhafi was saying. This man is a desperate/egomaniacal head of state who rambled on and on and on making no sense whatsoever. The people in Libya have suffered more under his regime than can be imagined. I certainly hope and pray that he does not represents the African Union. To admire this man in any way, shape or form seems irresponsible at best. To not recognize his incomprehensible ramblings and one-sided point of view means that somebody is not critically thinking if that person is thinking at all.
Once a terrorist always a terrorist ! Amercian Soil !

Your founding fathers found natives here and terrorized and tricked them into giving up their land!
This nation you are referring too, built a bright and promising future for her children, from the servitude of bondage from a civilization that far exceeded hers
Absolutely bizarre. So-called Americans embrace a terrorist dictator. And the article talks about "Abdush Shahid, a police officer from Newark, N.J. " I gotta tell you, I wouldn't want anyone wearing a badge and carrying a gun who believe that Gadhafi and radical Islam are wonderful. America really is in trouble...from within.

we get on our knees in private asking god for forgiveness of our sins but, we cannot forgive one another

well,I guess that tells all about human being selfishness.
Barrow, AK says ***I believe any peoples that gather together to praise and honor a terrorist while living in the USA, are against the USA and should be treated as such and deported!***

so we should deport them to America? LOL they were Americans and they have the right to their beliefs just as you. Even if it is misplaced.

Tell him to come pitch a tent in my neighborhood. We'll give him a great big redneck welcome...Then we'll send him back in a body bag...Just like he's done to so many people...What goes around comes around.
I think its great the Donald Trump let him stay at one of his mansions.
Let the ole man ramble for 90 minutes, who cares?  He obviously had to get some things off his mind. He should have taken his hat off and stayed awhile.
king of kings?  LOL and his security detail is ALL women and he is deathly afraid of elevators and lives in a tent!? He Sounds more like the evil genies in a James Bond Movie. LOL And come on couldn't you freshen up a little before your speech Mr King of Kings? My God you looked like an alcoholic that had been on a 4 day bender.
The United States is the worst terrorist nation that has ever existed in the history of humanity.  It is the most racist nation which has no regards to respecting the creations of the MOST HIGH YAH.  How dare this nation of the reagan-nixon-bush-karl rove-rush limbaugh-ann coulter-dick chenney and all of the rest of these dick-charlatans criticize Mr. Gadhafi.  A nation known to baptize innocent civilians with napalm bombs.  American hegemony and globalization of the planet by american corporations are the imminent threats needing to be dealt with internationally.  Peace and Shalom,
With Gadhafi, Medvedev and Obama in the news today it must have been “Crazy Communists and Tyrants Day”.  Does anyone know when the U.N. will have a “Liberty and Freedom Day”?
Gadhafi may not be a person America likes, but as people said earlier, the Lockerbie victims accepted compensation along with the settlement; therefore, the matter is closed. The victims' families need to get on with their lives and stop bitching. Also, America as a whole has more blood on their hands than all the dictators and such there are in the world, as we have assassinated good, moderate leaders in favor of right-wing douchebags since well-before the 'Cold War'.
michael newark from NJ:

the "once a terrorist always a terrorist" comment that Ron in Temecula, CA, made was referring directly to gadhafi being a terrorist, then and now.  your comment is saying that since the founders of our nation stole it from the native inhabitants that the people who live here today are terrorists.

that makes as much sense as you going to jail for a crime your great-great grandfather committed, long before your parents were born.

as to those of you who say that there was a paid settlement to the families of the lockerbie bombing, hear this:  that payment was only part of the deal.  the man who did the deed was supposed to be in prison, but lately was freed.  and on his return home to libya, gadhafi praised him effusively.

how would you feel if, say, a frenchman came to your parent's home, killed them all, was convicted of murder, and imprisoned for several years.  one day, he's freed due to health concerns, and returns to his home, and the french president personally meets with him and tells him what a fine, upstanding man he is.

THAT is why the families of the victims continue to have problems
so Ron and everyone else: "Once a terrorist always a terrorist.  Murder is murder. Gadhafi is a dictator and an evil man.  May the souls of his murder victims rest in peace. He will answer for his sins."-->I am not condoning Gadhafi's actions, but I do believe that Bush and his cronies have killed more people than Gadhafi has. Bush too will answer for his sins...another thing to note--he REJECTS fundamentalism. no one seems to realize this. I am Libyan-American and I don't love him bc I know first-hand stories about murdered dissenters in the late '70s, as well as Libyans murdered here. But why is he any different than our so-called "civilized" leaders. think about it--all the deaths the US has caused vs. Ghadafi; all the deaths Israel has caused vs Ghadafi. The thing i love tho about "Brother Leader" is that he has staved off the bloodsucking US and other Western countries salivating for oil.
The Poor hear him gladly. Isnt it a shame that all you naysayers can do is vent like little schoolboys. Cant you just accept that your time to rule is up?
Calm down everyone.  The U.S., as host country to the U.N. has the obligation to allow ALL world leaders to come to the U.N. (although their movements can be restricted). This includes leaders we like and those we don't. Everyone gets his or her say at the U.N. Live with it.. that's what a host does.
The man is a complete nutjob.  It is too bad that the FB-111's didn't get him back in 1986.  There is only one cure for a terrorist, Hunt them,Find then and Kill them.  They are all a bunch of hypocritical cowards.  They think that blowing up innocent men, women and children is a great accomplishment?  It makes them less than vermin!
It's amazing how just a little time and a lot of money will help people forget history.  Gadhafi is was one of the most wanted criminals in the world for murder and crimes against humanity.  Have we all fogotted his drag queen days when he was wanted by the free world?!?!  ANYONE that says's he's a good person is a psycho!!
Elect a Socialist as President and the commies and terrorist sympathizers begin crawling out of the woodwork!
