‘Be Veg’ competes with Tibet outside U.N.

Posted: Wednesday, September 23, 2009 5:08 PM

NEW YORK – Ingrid Hong, a petite insurance agent with two grown children, rose early Wednesday morning and left her Queens, New York residence with a placard – and a mission: "We encourage people to get peace by meditation and no killing – but mainly, we urge people to keep a vegetarian diet."

Hong was among hundreds who braved the crowds and the police barricades to come to Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, across from the United Nations, on Wednesday to try to compete for attention with the headline-generating protests associated with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi

She is part of a group called "The Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association," which advocates what they consider a simple solution to combat global warming. "According to a U.N. report," Hong explained, "livestock farming contributes more greenhouse gases than the energy sectors…We want the government to encourage organic farming."

Demonstrators protest against Iran in Dag Hammarskjold Plaza across from the United Nations headquarters on Wednesday.

Hong and others in her group occupied a prominent position next to a police barricade at the entrance to the plaza. Amid somber and occasionally graphic posters of wounded and dead Iranian protesters, the vegan group’s placards, "Be Veg, Go Green, Save the Planet," seemed to inspire many walkers to stop and chat. "You go!" shouted a well-dressed middle-aged woman. "I’m a vegan myself!  Way to go!"

A voice for Tibet
However, some of the assembled groups who have come year after year to protest outside the United Nations during the General Assembly sessions had a more sobering message.

"Sadly, [the U.N.] should be the place where disputes are settled – but it’s not," said Sonam Wangdu, Chairman of the U.S.-Tibet Committee.

Wangdu and others, some kneeling in prayer amid the noise and the crowds, were there to call attention to what they consider unfinished business: Their call for Tibetan independence and the end to what they denounce as human rights abuses in the Himalayan region.

"Some of my friend’s relatives were arrested in Tibet, and they are ‘nowhere’ – their family has no idea where they are and it’s hard to wrest information from the government," said Pema Chodon, a 37-year-old Tibetan who worked in the design industry, but is currently unemployed.

Chodon, who grew up in refugee camps in India, started to cry softly as she recounted why she has come here during the U.N.’s General Assembly every year for the past 12 years. "Those in Tibet cannot bring their voice here, so I can bring their voice."

She added that the Tibet issue is not just about human rights, but environmental issues, too. "Tibet is vast, with the highest peaks and many natural minerals." Chodon believes that the world has an obligation to try to stop the deforestation in Tibet. She and Wangdu also warned that the rivers in Tibet are a major source of water and have to be kept clean. This, they say, is part of what the United Nations should be doing.

Still, after years of advocacy, does Wangdu believe that gathering in front of the United Nations makes a difference to their cause?

"To be honest, it’s very difficult," Wangdu said. He said he believes that the United Nations’ current structure "is designed not to function. But symbolically, we have to do it."

The United Nations is defunct. It is funded by us U.S. and run by tyrants and thieves. It doesn't work except against us. We should stop funding it and throw it out of ur country. Let the third world countries, who've benefited so much from it, fund it.
China has done to Tibet what Hitler did to the Jews, yet the US does business with them so American CEOs can reap millions of dollars in bonuses a year. So much for America the Beautiful and justice for all.
Please do the research for yourself and find out more about the many benefits of a plant source diet.
Cheers,

If God did not intend for me to eat meat, He wouldn't have made it so darned delicious.
So....Leron.  Would you consider those websites to be unbiased?  Vegan diet is fine for most adults, but the vast majority of children who live with vegan parents and are subjected to plant based diets are terribly protein deficient and don't have enough energy to participate in vigorous outdoor activity.  This is primarily due to the fact that most vegans are not sufficiently informed concerning the proper content of their diet.  My personal experience with vegans is that they are pseudo-intellectuals who desire a moral and intellectual high ground from which to view their fellow citizens.
As to cows as the major contributors to greenhouse gases, is for others to say.
I think that the Dalai Lama's refocusing away from the cause -- to free Tibet.  Others continue to suffer.  I cannot see that the UN alone will effectively stop China's actions.  Going vegan is a movement with virttues all its own - but is if it is an element to sotp the Chinese from polluting the waters downstream its well worth it.
Russ,

Other sentient beings are not meant for your enjoyment.  They have just the same natural rights as you - to live.  It is quite a disgusting ethic that other beings are used as a means to an end, rather than a end in themselves.  As a human, you have the ability to eat and survive without killing other beings, why choose to be a destroyer of lives?  If some god did exist, I do not think it would be estatic to see needless killing for hedonistic ends.
Dear Russ - If God intended you to eat meat based on the taste, why does human flesh supposedly taste good? Does He intend for you to be a cannibal too? Stop using God to justify your oppression of other living things.

Hey, Russ!  Check out Genesis 1:29 for what God wants you to eat.  Bet you'll be surprised!
Mr. Scott Whitcher, you say "UN is defunct". I agree with that assessment to some extent. The rest of your message is long on opinion and short of facts. Do a little reading, dude.

Take care.
It is delicious to the tongue and brain. Imagine meat sitting outside at 95 degrees F. Not a pretty sight after a few hours. Imagine the same happening with your body. This is the source of majority of health problems in this country, right next to High Fructose Corn Syrup. I'm not saying being Veg will solve all these problems. You have to be sensible what you put in your body. You did not come here to just eat and procreate. There is definitely a higher purpose for you being here. So don't become obsessed with food.
God did intend for us to eat meat... for survival only.  I highly doubt but he intended us to factory farm and force suffering on a creature for the sole purpose of flavor.  It's not required for survival.  It actually consumes tons of water and food per animal.
Amen, to Russ in Cent. TX.  In some central and south american countries they let the cattle roam and feed it grass. Almost as good as Kobe beef.
No trees cut down and they rotate. Of course greed has  destroyed almost everything including yummy meat!
AMEN to that Russ!
If the only higher purpose for being here is to go Veg, then I am REALLY depressed....
Billy, where the heck dd you hear that HUMAN flesh tastes good?  Let's consider the sourse here...
Anyone that says 'animals have the same rights as humans' make me sick! Does anyone remember learning about the food chain in elementary school?? Being the most intelligent creatures on the planet means we the responsibility of taking care of everything around us. Being responsible. Not trying for some type of superiority over others by being 'better people' and not harming other creatures!
Actually, the Vegans make a good point. Cows do emit a lot of Methane, which is over 20 times as potent as Carbon Dioxide as a greenhouse gas.  Also, since a pound of beef requires about 10 pounds of vegetables, it is far more efficient to eat vegetables, which would provide much less starvation in the World.
