Not all Chicagoans 'back the bid' for 2016

Posted: Wednesday, September 30, 2009 12:05 PM

CHICAGO – You might think with all the star power surrounding Chicago's bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics – with President Barack Obama expected to join first lady Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey in Copenhagen – that there would be a groundswell of support for the effort here in the Windy City.

There just might be, but that depends on which poll you believe.

This week, the Chicago 2016 bid committee trumpeted a Zogby poll showing that 72 percent of Chicagoans "back the bid" (to use the committee's slogan).

But that is a far cry from a Chicago Tribune poll released earlier this month that had locals split down the middle, with just 47 percent for the bid versus 45 percent against it.

VIDEO: Obamas, Winfrey make Olympic pitch

I did my own highly unscientific poll this week and heard arguments on both sides. Everyone agreed the president's in-person pitch could not hurt Chicago's chances, and that the games could show the world the best the city has to offer. But that publicity is not free, and concern lingers about a projected budget that already exceeds $2 billion and cost overruns that have been a staple of recent Olympic history.

"There will be insiders who will make all the money on the deal," said local Dave Stewart, echoing a common mistrust of the Chicago political machine. "Unfortunately, the taxpayers will be stuck with the overruns and the costs. And I don't see the benefit of it."

Local officials claim that most costs will be covered by revenue from the games, developer financing and donations. They have also devised a $1.4 billion insurance package and pledged $750 million in city and state money in the event of a loss.

But skepticism remains, as evidenced by the approximately 250 people who turned out Tuesday for a protest at City Hall sponsored by the group No Games Chicago.

A more satirical online protest has gone viral in the form of ChicagoansForRio.com, which features locals expressing support for Rio de Janeiro – already considered Chicago's strongest competitor. After speculation that the Brazilians were behind the site, it was revealed this week to be the pet project of a local ad executive.

Still, some residents remember that when the International Olympic Committee evaluated Chicago last April, several streets went from pothole-riddled to paved overnight. The hope is that a full-blown Olympic polish would bring about much-needed improvement in the city's infrastructure and mass transit.

"They need to improve some of those things anyway," said another local, Doug Hoenig. "So I'm hoping that bringing the Olympics here will help."

With the impeachment and upcoming trial of former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich still fresh in local residents’ minds (thanks to his seemingly unending media blitz), some supporters welcome the good public relations that the games could bring.

"We've had a reputation that's been kind of negative," said Karen Mendoza. "And I think this would place a really positive light on the city."

Depending on what happens Friday, this whole debate could be a footnote in history. Or it may just rage on for the next seven years.

Some people are VERY short sighted.  Yes, it will cost a lot to develop and set the venues.  But once that's done, the revenue for the city and the improvements required are invaluable.  Top dogs get a lot of money, but it also helps all the folks who run restaurants, souvenir shops, vending carts, etc., not to mention the jobs it will provide getting the city ready.  THINK instead of reacting.
this is a "Jamais Vu" the president of the US and de 1st lady piching for the olympics.....smells fishy...they  must owe a lot of money to their  buddies to do a thing like that how sad for a person suppose to be the INTEGRITY!!!!
Obama just wants to pay back his Chicago friends. Why is he wasting his time with this any way? I think we have bigger issues to tackle in Washington than this. Will Obama be the worst president since Jimmy Carter?
Since the Twin Cities were passed-over for any olympics consideration several years ago, then, no, I don't think Chicago should be considered unless they re-visit the proposal from Minnesota - seems just like another way for politians to get their way once again.  By the way, when is the President going to get his own talk show or variety show on TV?  Seems to me he is getting more free air time that he deserves - why aren't other politicians being invited on the talk shows?  Just curious...
get real..Chicago is one of the most corrupt cities in the United States and THIS model of corruption is the one we want the world to see? You think the corruption is bad now, just wait and see what happens if the Olympics are nested there!!!
Yes, I think its great the President and Mrs. Obama are lobbying for the games. Just think of the publicity, jobs and money it would bring in.
I don't support King Richard Daily II. He is out of control. We are the highest taxed city in the country, sold one of the Chicago Expressway (Skyway), Sold the parking meters to private foreign companies and now he wants the 2016 Summer Olympics in Chicago without ever having a referendum/ballot from the citizens of Chicago.
Skyway fees after the sale went up 200%;
Parking meter fees went up 600% after the sale and eliminated Saturday and Sunday free meter parking.
Our Public Transportation system is in shambles, BUT he wants the Olympics. At what cost to the citizens.
More taxation, More sales of public property to foreign companies.
So we have to ask ourselves - Are the Olympics in Chicago for the benefit of the citizens (less taxes, get our property back, better services) or for the Ultra EGO of King Richrad Daily II?
Obama conveys all the comfort on the world stage of a Slick Car Salesman selling out FREEDOM, DEFENSE & INDEPENDENCE to the United Nations College of Socialist Dictators for chance to yuk-up lies with Leftist Talk Show Hosts.  The country is bankrupt, yet Obama desperately attempts to redistribute what little remaining wealth the middle-class might have with gov't unionized healthcare, Obama Motors, Cap & Trade, to illegal immigrants, offshore corporations, and the Feudal Lords of Washington DC and their special interest union bosses and lobbyists.

Obama's vision for America is to tax, penalize, denounce, and bankrupt us so that with open arms we will have no choice but join the ranks of the third world and suffering euro-nations that Obama dreams of ruling over as Supreme Dictator of the World.

And I'm supposed to get excited about Olympics for Chicago Cronies...

to broom- talk about short sighted, all the money and jobs coming in would last no longer than a couple of months-the period leading up, including, and following the actual games.  a recent european study http://www.etoa.org/Pdf/Member/etoa_report_olympic.pdf
debunked the myth that the games create any increase in tourism.  in fact, traditional tourist destinations see a small decline in visitors during, and likely due to, the games.  jobs created are just as quickly lost when all tourists leave.  its true that business sees sales spikes, but there is absolutely no reason billions in public funds should be spent to give any business, large or small, added revenue when our  budget deficit is already heavily bloated (thanks in large part to this mayor) and city employees are getting laid off and human services like healthcare, education, and housing are already being cut.
If you no sayers are against everything that happens in Chicago, and you think the people that run the city are so crooked, why don't you find somewhere else to live.
I hope he(the president) remembers he has a REAL JOB!! And real crises around the world and at home. Remember Afghanistan, and the healthcare plan that isn't passing. How about those czars of everything under the sun that no one knows how much they get paid and what they do?  And the olympics is his #1 priority? Something is definitely wrong with his Blackberry!!!
Didn't Greece wind up spending almost 10 billion dollars to get Athens and the rest of the country in shape to host the Olympics there?  Who uses the big fancy stadium they built for it now?

The spirit of Olympic competition is still a wonderful ideal to uphold.  But the economic practicality of hosting the event has gone right out the window.

Stick with hosting Superbowls - at least the stadiums bring continuing revenues to the cities.
Someone asked IF Pres. Obama WILL BE the worst president besides Pres. Carter?!  He already is!!!  HE only does work that involves face-time on TV!  I am sick of seeing the "Dear Leader" on every channel every day!  He should be meeting with his Generals and visiting the troops...THAT is his job, not bringing a boondoggle like the cost-run-amok-Olympics to a city that is already a mess!!
I just find it sad the the most important thing onthe Presiden tof the United States mind... is if he can talk a sports organization into hanging out in his home town. Wow. Way to prioritize. He, did anyone tell this guy we need joba and our country is in financial ruin???? Not to mention, this is a town that lets children beat each other to death...
Look into who has the property rights on the selected venues if Chicago gets the games. My guess would be a collection of Obama favorites, like ah say, Valerie Jarett? It's worth looking into.
The games never create revenue in the long run. Just look at Beijing. That "Bird's Nest Stadium" now sits empty, unused. The stadium that was built with taxpayers' money. What is the purpose. Yeah, the city gets quite a bit of attention, but then everyone leaves, and all those employees that were hired for the extra help are no longer needed, and have to be let go. Hosting the events is not worth the cost to any city.
maybe he should do something about the savage violence in Chicago (like what happened two days ago), first?
Just a thought.
As a frequent visitor, I find that Chicago already has, by far, the worst traffic and infrastrucure in the country.  Can this city really cope with more of the same?  How does a 4-hr commute sound to you?

You can't compare Chicago's potential costs to Athens. A hgue portion of their expense was building a subway that they didn't have beforehand. Also, I don't understand these people that talk about the horrible shape Chicago is in. Have you been to another large city? Chicago is doing pretty wll. Daley may be corrupt but he gets stuff done. Go to NYC and compare the garbage level. Good luck walking down the street there. And the jobs created last YEARS, not months. It will take jobs to build the venues, update the infrastructure, etc. Jobs will be created before the Olympics come and we get the updated infrastructure afterward, with an insurance policy to help offset potential cost overruns. What is your problem? And do you really think that Obama will be cut off while he is there? Air Force One is a flying office building. He can be just as effective overseas for two days.
CHANGE MY A$$, you think Jimmy Carter was the worst president?  You're conveniently overlooking the last chap to hold the office.  That's right - good old W.  If you don't think that he was the worst president in recent memory (or who knows, maybe all time) then clearly you've been living under a rock.  He inherited a strong economy and a (mostly) good international reputation from Clinton and in 8 short years started a ridiculous and un-needed war that had nothing to do with 911, and created a lax economic regulatory climate that has plunged the US and pretty much the entire world into the worst recession since the 30s.  If you think that's better than Carter, then you better take off the rose colored glasses before you fall down and hurt yourself.
This could possibly bring a lot of much needed jobs and an economic boost.
The President is doing what any President of the USA should do to get such a prestigious event to an american city. Those that oppose the President are doing mostly based on their political affiliation instead at looking at the benefits it will bring to one american city in these days when all cities need the economic boom such games will bring. It is a shame that so many people in this country are so short minded. Atlanta, Los Angeles and Utah had many problems prior to hosting previous games, but no one here in the south complained, they all wanted the games. Get for real and cut the crop. Superbowls only provide a boost for one weekend; Olimpic provides boost to every business in the cities for week before and after the games. Grow up America.
It is common practice for national leaders to assist in lobbying the IOC to host Olympics. It also gives a reason for Fed Govt to assist State and City govt with $$$ for infrastructure. Why would Chicago turn down $$ from NY and California tax payers? LA took the dollars in 1984, Atlanta took them 1996.
I think the issue is moot in that the USA will not win the necessary votes to host 2016.
"The Fix is in" Obama alresdy knows it's in the bag, that's the only reason he went.Somebody(IOC/Obama Fan) made a call to someone in the White House because King Obama needs a great Photo op and a boost in the polls. He's a lawyer, he knows you dont ask a question you don't know the answer to.No way he puts himself out on this limb unless he knows thwe outcome. Not right now, it could wind up making him look foolish and arrogant an an international level.Even a small victory right now, going into what certainly will be a rough couple months with Congress, will certainly not hurt his popularity poll numbers nationally.Given the fact you have alot more friends in Congress when you're popular with the people. It's a done deal.
I SMELL PRODUCTION! AND PREDICT ORGASMIC JOY throughout Chicago's ruling class when the official word comes down that the city has won the 2016 Summer Olympics.Yes, yes, we know that Mayor Daley's fingernails have been chewed down to the nubs while awaiting news of whether the games would be awarded to his fiefdom. But this is also what's known as a 'tease,' the 'cliffhanger.' And when the U.S. chief lobbyist shows up in Copenhagen to get the good word, that will be the shocking 'reveal.' It's a common tactic in daytime and reality TV. And look who's in Copenhagen? Oprah! Ready to produce the show. http://budurl.com/76w7
What losers. The President is looking to improve the city of Chicago, bring jobs and revenue there as well as wordly exposure, and these crybabies can only whine. Last week these same people were probably the ones crying that the President was overexposed on TV trying to push his health care reform. Today, they cry that he should stay home and work on health care. Unlike the previous president Obama can do several things at once.
I sincerely doubt Chitown can afford the tab.

After 1 G-20 summit in Pittsburgh, there will not be another. 4000 military,SWAT, and police for a thousand protestors was sheer overkill. And we haven't even gotten the bill for it yet. I'll bet the "privilage to work in pittsburgh tax" doubles next year.

Not a good time for America to be hosting anything.

for many reasons.

lack of money being one.

Chicago, don't get sold a bill of crap.

Just say no. :)
Take this advice from a Canadian, who is about to have the 2010 winter Olympics in our area. The governement has cut much funding to public schools, cut sports programs for kids, cut funding for abused kids and Moms. Cut funding to Seniors services, Cut beds available to the sick and Senior homes. Closed operating rooms, closing traffic throught downtown  all during the Olympics, leaving the merchants lost without drive by traffic and no way for their employees to get there. CLosing school for the duration, leaving parents who work to scramble for day care, etc, etc, the list goes on and on. Rebuilding a highway to Whistler that only the rich can afford to use anyway. You have not ideaa how much grief the Olympics can cause, unless you have been there.
Why... would Obama be waisting his time on this... He needs to get this country out of this slump. Find a way to fix the budget, what to do about the war. He needs to stop going on all these TV shows and stay in DC and fix our problems. I have seen this President on more shows and Vacations than anyother President we have had.... whats up with all this
Olympics in Chicago is a GREAT idea.  I live in the midwest (Omaha) and it's time we had the Olympics instead of just New York, Utah and Seattle.  I also like the Obamas involved in this decision process because he has so much support around the country. This isn't just Chicago that is in the world view, but the entire USA.  Let's get this done!
First of all, why is our President focusing on the Olympics, when he has better things to do, like working to improve the state of our economy, or working on the dual front war that we have going on.

Second of all.  If Chicago is going to get the games, it will help the economies of Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan and Illinois quite a bit, HOWEVER, Obama is NOT needed in Copenhagen for these talks!

Get back to your oval office, and work, and try to show us you REALLY MEANT some of your campaign promises.
