New Orleanians: Obama’s visit too zippy

Posted: Thursday, October 15, 2009 11:55 AM

NEW ORLEANS – President Barack Obama will be in New Orleans for less than 3 hours and 45 minutes. In this town known for its spicy gourmet food, some dinners last longer than that.

Many New Orleans residents – still weary from the effects of Katrina four years on – are grateful that the presidential spotlight will shine in the city, however briefly.

During his short time here, Obama will visit the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Charter School. It’s the only school to reopen in New Orleans Lower Ninth Ward, an area inundated with water and black mud when the Industrial Canal failed during Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Two neighboring homes in New Orleans' Lower Ninth Ward are shown in a photo taken on Wednesday, a day before Obama's visit.

The school is a gleaming example of some of the recovery under way, but if the president were to walk a few blocks from the school, he might meet Antonio Green, who was one of the first residents to rebuild in the Ninth Ward.

Green would tell the president that not much has changed on his street since he took office.

"They’re not helping people around here. As you can see, the neighborhood is still bad," Green said, pointing to an empty, rotting house across the street.

He said his neighborhood is devoid of everyday life. "We just have abandoned houses and vacant lots. It’s like we’re stuck at the bottom with no help."

And if the president was there just a little longer, he might pass some time sitting on the front porch of Yvonne Johnson’s home, just down the street from the MLK school. "The Lower Ninth Ward seems to be like another country," said Johnson, a 73-year-old retiree. "[Obama] would have to stay here a month or so to really see enough. He can’t possibly stay down here long enough to see everything that we would want him to see."

After a short town-hall style meeting with a pre-selected audience at the University of New Orleans, the president will step aboard Air Force One to head out to San Francisco for a fundraising trip. He won’t even have time to stop for a relaxing meal in New Orleans.

Funny, I didn't realize the government's job is to rebuild.  What happened to personal responsibility and communities?
When is the President going to stop campaining and spending tax dollars for flying all over to the world.  He acts like the Am. people are tax atm's for his purpose.
How do you spell photo op?
all this hateing,
hope it gets you where you want to be
Ain't that a kick in the pants? I guess it's Chicagos' time to shine right now. Ray Nagin 2012??
Yup,  I work full time also,  and I don't have much time in my day either.
He's there!! Both feet on the ground! He cares! He is SO MUCH BETTER then the last eight nightmarish years! I THANK GOD  that he is president!!! Thank God!
This does seem a little strange that Obama would go down there. Obama and Joe Biden back then voted to fund the "bridge to nowhere" in Alaska not once but twice instead of funding for Katrina, so I can see why he wouldn't be welcome down in New Orleans. I remember when they tried to use that against Sarah Palin when she was doing everything she could to dump it.
obama rules
Why doesn't he just stay home and quit wasting our money on endless flights on Air Force One.  Stop campaigning already.
I see where Mr. Greene is coming from. My question to him is the same under this adminsitration as it was in the prior, "why are you looking to the governmnet to fix your problems? Why aren't you doing it yourself?" This situation sucked. You need to rebuild and move on with life. Government isn't here to make all of your problems go away. They've proven that. I will pray for you and for the hope that you'll realize that the only help you have is the help you give yourself.
New Orleans was much more important in 2008 when he needed votes.
Just another Propoganda Stop by the OabamaDrama Committee and the DemoRats - really doesen't mean much more than that - everything they do has a purpose and a spin
Oh you don't know that you have elected our first A.D.D. president. He is not able to focus on anything for more than a second or so...then he has to fly on to something else like a bee.
"Many New Orleans residents ...are grateful that the presidential spotlight will shine in the city, however briefly."

Way to go MSNBC.  If this were Bush running off to San Francisco for a fundraiser and not spending as much time as some meals last, you'd have skewered him.  I guess when liberals don't care enough, that's ok.
I WONDER WHY EVERY DARN THING PRESIDENT OBAMA DOES IS WHY THIS WHY THAT? WHEN HE WAS HANDED A MESS. EVERY ONE ODDLY FORGOT IT WAS BUSHES MESS. AND NOW NEW ORLEANS TOMORROW IT WILL BE SOMETHING ELSE. WHEN IT BLEEDS IT LEADS?!! OH BY THE WAY BUSH WATCHED NEW ORLEANS IN THE WATER FROM AN AIRPLANE!!!!!
Even if President Obama spends only a minute in New Orleans,it still doesn't erase the fact that his administration has accomplished more or done more for New Orleans in less than 9 months than what Bush did in three years.
It's taken him 9 months to finaly get down there? I thought this was an iportant issue, an EMERGENCY.
When Bush was in office Katrina was one of the biggest on-going issues for liberals to wail about.
Now that Obama doesn't care enough to make it a priority well then that's all just well and good.
Like the rationale for the Nobel prize I'm sure he has good intentions on the matter.
It's amazing how every little can become grist for the partisan mill.  Obama's spending 4 hours in N.O. is more than enough time.  The problem is, people are so quick to be critical and to use that criticism in order to take a shot at the other side.  To be fair, the same thing was done to Bush.  People in this country need to stop tugging so much at the President's pants legs and try to fix things themselves.
what a waste, 3 hours 45 minutes...1100 extra miles of flying in airforce one from dc to new orleans, he should have just gone straight to san francisco (2817 miles direct)save time & $$$
As long as right wing conservatives and neo-cons are fuming, I'm OK.  I only start to worry when they are happy with the status quo.

Why are we still spending Federal tax dollars on rebuilding New Orleans FOUR years after Katrina? When are those people going to get off the dole, off their rears and stop whining? Federal money to fix the levees and temporary assistance and that's it. Get on with your lives.
Stop hating. Remember he's human and there's is only so m uch he can. Do u really think New Orleans is the only problem he has? The fact that he's stopping by means he cares. At least he doing a lot more than Bush did.
when bush was in he did nothing, people all over this great nation was was hurt. when wall st started to fall his responce "wall st got drunk and we got the hang over" obama is cleaning up the mess left after 8 years
Ummmm for all those people living in OTHER parts of the country and NOT the Gulf Coast (I am by the way a south Mississippi Gulf Coast resident) SHUT UP!

Bush DID get to New Orleans, what was he supposed to do then? Pass out money and free-bees? What did Obama do that Bush didn't do? What would he have done? Why DIDNT he do it already then, b/c your sick rantings about Obama has done more in the past 9 mths than Bush did in years would be LAUGHABLE if it weren't such a sickly skewed POV....he has done NOTHING that he promissed you, let you follow him like dogs....then you claim the American's that are against ALL Big Government to be sheep for the Republican's when HALF of us voted against the Republican's this past election cycle..

You hardcore leftist are a disease in this country. George Washington would've fought against you in war had you acted like this during his time.
Why should I expect help from the goverment? because living in a democracy I am the goverment. I give to the goverment so it can work. The question is as ignorant as asking: why should I expect the freeway to be maintained? why should I expect my kids to receive a good quality education in their school? Do my city needs help, the county should help, then the state, then the federal goverment. Of course that doesn't mean that I shouldn't do anything for me, but there are rights because I fullfill my obligations. There are people that just seems to hate everything and everybody and give their opinion without even trying to think about what they are saying...but as I said, this is a democracy.
I agree with all those pointing out that he's wasting our tax dolalrs by flying all over the place trying to give everyone these "feel good about your life" vibes.  The truth is that he spends more time campaigning than leading.  I live in New Orleans, and trust me, there are lots of people "getting off the dole".  There are a few sectors of people who unfortunately think that the American Public owes them a new home because they decided to take the risk of not having flood insurance-Not my problem-I had flood insurance and homeowners insurance.  But what exactly could Obama learn in 3 hours with a pre-selected audience?
Gee.  I hope if a natural disaster hits your local community such as it did New Orleans, that you dont wait around for the government to assist you... YOu can go ahead and bury your own dead, build your own house, pave your own streets, go make yoru own tools since none will be provided to you, build your own levees, handle your own trauma, go be your own doctor, go be your own shrink and then see how you fare 4 years of this...These are Americans... they have every right to be assisted by the government which is for the people...or did you forget?
My God, why hasnt he stopped world hunger yet, its been 9 months already, and for that matter when is he ging to get around to stopping the joker from robbing that bank...
They "Hope" they'll get a new couch from the government when the old one wares out.
In response to Bill C from Placerville:  I moved to New Orleans last year from Houston and was aghast at the situation here.  The devastation extends far beyond the Lower Ninth Ward and struck neighborhoods of EVERY socioeconomic level.  I felt much like you did before I moved here and saw with my own eyes.  It is unimagineable.  The tourist areas may appear to be "back to normal" but it is the areas that outsiders do not see that tell the real truth about where New Orleans stands 4 years post-K.  It is hard to believe this situation exists in the United States.  "These people" are just like you Bill C and they are not "whining." I challenge you to get on a plane and come down here and take a look with your own eyes before judging them please.
I think we have a ton of issues that have popped up since President Obama took office--and just whose administration did Katrina occur in???

Did those properties not have individual owners? What happened to their insurance money or requiring them to raze the properties?

I just don't get that our government is expected to take care of every issue that every citizen faces...
As a New Orleaian, I can tell you that we have done and continue to do a lot for ourselves.  It's remarkable, however, that so many people to this day have no realization of just how bad it was down here. And why  is it that the most ignorant among us always yell the loudest.
How do you have "personal responsibility" for a natural disaster?  We all live in our own universe, our own little corner of the world.  Our house, our friends house, our gas station, our Mcdonalds.  For the people in New Orleans, their universe was destroyed. Very few can even begin to speak about "whining" and all that "boot-strap" talk unless your entire city was almost wiped off the face of the earth.  They were in need, and their country failed them..."give us your poor, your weak, your huddled masses..."
he will just mislead as bush did about katrina, the truth about that event will come out as 911 did.
Since when did the President flying on Air force One in the interest of Americans (maybe not you specifically) become such a big deal.  Would you rather THE PRESIDENT fly Southwest.  Some people can't think past their hatred.  All the cost of using Air Force One is in the military budget and accounted for.  There is no additional spending.  Its a shame that to some peole, this man can do no right.  Hate is alive and well and destroying this country.
Don't feel bad.....that is 3 hours and 45 minutes more than President Obama spent on the Mississippi Gulf Coast that was just as devastated by Hurricane Katrina and by a 30' to 33' storm surge that flattened everything inland up to 5 miles near via the Jordan River for example and at the cost of many lives. The Mississippi Coastal Communities have yet to recover and in part because President Obama refuses to support our Congressman Gene Taylor's "All Perils Insurance" Bill that would dramatically speed up our recovery!
