The USA is sufering the rsult of its business and geopoltical forces, wanting and allowing, illegal aliens to enter our country. In my city in Washington State, we have USA drug-use and manufacturer problems within the residedntial areas.
We have many recent citizens in our area and most are upstanding citizens and community members. There should not be illegal aliens in USA, all foreginers should have Govt. mandated IDs (and USA citizens too). These ID cards would be waterprooof and have RFID chips in them and include basic medical info for emrgency use). The Fed Govt. needs to legalize basic drug use thru medical doctors and clincs. The turth is . . . folks are self-medicating and need gudielines and trainning in when its appropriate to use street drugs. You are not going to create 'paprdise' this way, though it does helop to control street drug use and its can be taxed and controlled. Unlicensced Street Dealers are not friends of americans or Mexicans, etc., they are part of our joint social and economic 'problems'.

USAS may have to legalize drugs and all foreigners in USA as steps towards this problems solutions. Al foeginers in USA should have to go through classes that bring them up to level of beening moral, healthy and useful american citizens. The alternative is a new open war on both countries streets. We need to step up to the plate, so to speak, and start a joint national program in Mexico and USA to educate each citizen in how to act successfullly and correctly, in a modern social and economic community. This would include avoluntary trainning and access to birth control means. God is practical . . . and expects christians and others to use family and national order, as concurrent forces within the spiritual path?

Personally I dont't like the idea of children free-loading off of our educational system (I am from San Diego where it is common) but to risk the lives of innocent children in any case is beyond acceptance. Columbus New Mexico is not the only border town with this problem - check out El Paso/Juarez, Laredo/Nueva Laredo, McAllen/Matamorao or Noales, AZ/Noales, Mx. I do believe the current president of Mexico is serious about fighting the drug cartels which is a first. As far as the children attending US schools, reread the story. These are children that were born in the US but live with their families in Mexico. Until the US changes their laws about being an American citizen just by being born here, this problem will continue. It is very sad to see the ignorance of people not wanting to see reality. First of all the children going to school in the US are Armerican Born they have a right to be here. Whether their families are living in Mexico or not and paying taxes or not. This is a big problem especially living in the south. I have read most of the posts here and a few I wonderwhat their point was. Others I agree with, though all of our postulating will do nothing. The people who suggest we do nothing and legalize drugs must be the parents whose kids walk all over them. Those that say the problem resids with the good old USA are true. We have not taken measures to curb drug abuse besides throwing people in jail so capitalism at work, where there is a demand there will be a supply. The corruption and lack of job creation by the Mexican gov't also helps because making, selling and muling drugs is a job, and if you can't afford to feed your family that job begins to look not so bad. This is a social, political problem that like most ends up hurting those at the bottom. The people getting killed are not the drug lords but foot soldiers in their army, the victoms in the community collateral damage, and when is spreads into New Mexico those citizens who cannot afford to move away. Though as some have pointed out the most important thing in this articleis that their are children crossing the boarder to go to school in the US. I work in the field of social service and see daily US kids medical benifits get taken away from them and given to illegal immigrants these are US kids who's parents to do work for a living and thier companys do not give a health plan and they can not afford medical coverage. People who lost jobs due to the great trade acts in the US. Do you people understand the US is a service country now we don't make anything in this country anymore. Most in the US try to say it is due to the unions we are this way. Take UPS they are union and they pay employees a good rate and give a medical as well. This company and the Teamster union both understand they have to put a top rate into play if not there could be a down fall like we are seeing with the auto unions. Greed that has been the auto union for many years. You don't pay someone $48 dollors an hour to put a bumper on a car. There is a link to the use of drug rates going up in the US when jobs began to be ship over and people lost jobs in the US. Rep. and Dem. don't listen the US people anymore. Medical marijawana has been voter approved in a few states and yet the FED GOV refuses to listen to we the people. So, in short the GOV outlawing natural drugs has created this war on drugs, and as long as the GOV profits off drugs being illegal it will continue. Unfortunantly Paul Ravier never had any forsight becouse if he did he would not have been saying "to arms the redcoats are comming". Instead he would have said "to arms the Federal Gov. is comming". I think it's time for the Gov to actually start listening to we the people and adhere to the issues we are voting on. Initially I had planned to write a in-depth response to this article, but after reading all the comments, it's absolutely outrageous how some people respond to issues, when the bottom line is kids are dying for no reason. It's always been the thinking of a certain section of Americans that if it's not me, than who cares. It's only a matter of time before conflicts like these in Columbus spill into other suburban communities all throughout the U.S. It's happening as we speak. Clearly the arts of diplomacy and open dialogue between governments has taken a back to seat to those who believe erecting a 20 foot wall solves all. For those who don't understand how children of Mexican nationals can be US-born:
Hospitals in the US are mandated by the Federal Government to treat anyone who walks in the door, including labor and delivery of newborns, regardless of nationality and ability to pay, whereas hospitals in Mexico typically require payment up front. When a child is born on US soil it is guaranteed birthright citizenship by the Constitution of the USA, and thus guaranteed all the rights of a US citizen, including education, whether tax-paying or not. American born kids are still "American" regardless of where they live. By virtue of birth they are afforded the same rights as any other "American". There are many people here who don't contribute to taxes and infact live off the taxes of others. So should they also be shipped out? What we are talking about here is the greater responsibility of a nation and not an individual's bias/prejudice towards less fortunate.

Some speak of illegal immigrants and that there should be none in this country. I too think that the law should be upheld. However, the economical disaster that would ensue should all these illegal immigrants be deported would be far too great. Who would work in your fields; likely not the same ones that want them all to leave? If the economy is bad now imagine what the fall-out would be when the cost of agricultural production triples or more. The point here is that this is a necessary evil and what the government seeks to do is curtail it but I don't think they intend to eliminate it. Big picture.

As for the drugs it is no doubt and understatement to say deplorable and disgusting. However, supply and demand. Do you think Mexican drug dealers make much of their money from other Mexican's? They kill each other and everything in site to take control of the market here (the buyers). For the majority of drug production the final destination is here. Those committing these atrocities should receive harsh, swift retribution and taken off the streets but the problem has become such a cancer how do we truly remedy the situation in this lifetime? You chopp off the head of the snake and there are millions more waiting to take its place.

This is a great nation but such an esteemed status comes with various and numerous responsibilities and problems to contend with.

Also another point is there are many mexican families that buy homes, drive the gas guzzeling SUV,s and collect welfare work and deal drugs! • The US has military bases in lots of places that do not need military bases; move some of these bases to the US/Mexico border. Have the military stop the drugs and the illegals. Build a fence or whatever; just stop the problems.
• In the 1970’s the establishment was pushing its citizens to have fewer children; many of us have small families. Fewer people less pressure on limited resources. Now the US is having the energy crisis that was predicted in the 70’s; why are we increasing the population with people from other countries.
• Econ 101 teaches us that we all have limited resources. Take the government out of the international charity business and leave that responsibility to churches and charities. Save our limited resources for the citizens of the US. If we do help another country; bill them for our services.
• The US should bill Mexico and other countries for our services to their citizens. Refund these moneys to the institutions that are going broke. The institutions that are going broke include: schools, hospitals and police departments; the very services we need to make our country strong.
• The US needs to go back to a policy of isolationism, let’s solve problems within our own country. The government should start solving problems to the benefit of US citizens. The first change needed is to reduce our energy consumption. Back in the 1970’s and 1980’s the government limited the speed limit on our highways to 55 mph, this caused problems for our trucking industry. Why not limit speed limits in metropolitan areas to save energy. Do not change the rural highway speeds for the truckers, lower speed limits for passenger vehicles and enforce the speed limits.
• Enforce the laws. If we have laws about speed limits, enforce them. If we have laws about illegals, enforce them. If we have laws to reduce gang violence, enforce them. If we have laws protecting the environment, enforce them; but do not limit our ability to become energy independent by making vast areas off limits to solving our short term energy crisis. Energy prices will stay high, more investment in our natural resources and in alternative energy is needed.
• Most of all make our government work to protect its citizens, while not limiting our ability to protect our country. Business executives are hired to set a path for the long term, should our elected officials not do the same. Politicians that add non related amendments to bills passing through congress should be fired.

Instead, why not legalize, regulate and tax drugs like marijuana. Anyone who's taken an ECON class knows the rules of supply and demand. By legalizing something like marijuana, supply will increase dramatically while profits and prices will fall in the same manner. This will in turn put pressure on the cartels as their demand will fall. Simple. With the increased taxes, you remove a big liability from our balance sheet and have the revenues to fund treatment / rehab. Why doesn't the Usa take over Mexico make it a Democratic society rid them of the cartels and Crooked Politicians and put all the mexicans on their own Social security number and let them pay taxes like we do. Crime is going on all over mexico not just border towns and then you wonder why no american truck driver wants to go down there i.e.(nafta) for fear of being robbed or killed and take a look at how many mexican trucks crossing border lately have been caught with drugs or illeagels this is not something that has just started its been going on for years and thats why pres bush gave mexico millions in aid and police training to mexico. And as far as them kids going to school here there parents should pay U.S. taxes or send there kids to mexican schools tough love. I think law should be changed that says parent should be U.S. citizen. Not automatically give U.S. citizenship just because they have baby on U.S. soil.

Yes you're right illegal aliens do use fake or stolen SS#. Now the word stolen is a little strong, because this people do not go into someone's home to get this number. A lot of time is a matter of luck or a number passed down by someone. But ok, lets see illegal aliens use fake SS# they get taxes deducted, in fear of deportation they do not file, so who ends up keeping the money??? With the resources available in the world (developed countries), there isn't a situation that can't be resolved if the governing powers want it to be resolved. The world has the collective intelligence and resources to overcome anything if there is incentive. The two words that come to mind here are money and power. They both seem to have about the same volume in their voices and ramifications.
Yes, Mexico is corrupt..pretty much always has been and pretty much probably always will be a long as there is such a huge division between havalots and havalittles.
As to corruption...just read the newspaper, listen to the radio or tv news tonight and see what local or federal politicians and bureaucrats have done in the US to betray the public trust. We've been in a dead heat with Mexican corruption for quite a while now.
These drug turf wars will come to a close when it's profitable for some reason to end or someone's politically connected relative on this side gets caught in the crossfire.

This "War on Drugs" is really stupid. Go to the LEAP website which is Law Enforcement Against Prohibition and look at the realities of this war. It is a losing battle and we need to get real about why selling drugs is so profitable - they are illegal. If legalized and controlled as we do with other drugs, ie. alcohol, tobacco, prescription drugs, we would be way ahead in tax dollarsAND we could eliminate much of the violence, have fewer criminals.

So Let's get real about this and address the problem - "bad guys sell drugs because they can make so much money at it because people want to buy and the products are illegal" Eliminate the illegal part and much of the problem is eliminated.

None of these comments make sense. You want a federal ban on immigration because you think that only immigrants have a drug violence problem? The east coast has no Mexican border to cross, but has a few of the most dangerous cities in the US..and while not overflowing with immigrants, the drug trade is alive and well. Mexico has a drug problem, but prejudice against their immigrants isn't going to stop it. Drugs don't just come from below us, they're coming from above and they're coming from inside our own country too..

The problem at our southwest border is simple: Americans (of all ethnicities and social classes)want to buy and use drugs, and Mexican drug traffickers are more than happy to supply them. It's capitalism at work, globally (supply and demand). This is in turn exacerbates the long standing problem of economic poverty in Mexico and the moral poverty in America. The term "drug pusher" is a misnomer, it should be "drug deliverer." Drug deliverers operate anywhere there is a demand, IN CONCERT with drug users. So, from an American perspective it's useless to solve the problems at the border with security measures, alone. Instead, address the moral problems prevelant in our American communities and help to reduce drug use. While at the same time, provide diplomatic and economic assistance to help Mexico increase it's economic potential. This is a real world way to help resolve a real word problem. What we're witnessing today, is purely reactionary politics, and large doses of bias and prejudice.

Good thing all the anti-immigrant crowd who post here are all Native Americans. If they weren't then they would have to do some soul-searching about how they came to be born and grow up in the best country in the world. Perhaps a stray great-grandparent came from Europe for the same reasons Mexicans, Central Americans and others come today.

I say open the border but deal with the real issue, which is criminality, not Place of Birth. Let's help Mexico get rid of the criminals by not buying their drugs and selling them guns. That anyone would take away from this article that the problem is American childrenattending school in America (and unless you want to change the rules about who is and is not entitled to be an American citizen, they are American children) is beyond me.

I think we're better than that, and my hope is that these frustrated souls will look in the mirror, or at the family Bible, and realize that building a wall, had it been undertaken some time ago, would have kept Grampa Isaac, or Aunt Maria or Uncle Gunther from coming here.

The strength of this country is our diversity and our access to cheap labor. You cut those things off and I'd like to see all the native-born Americans who line up to mop floors, cut the grass or wash dishes. I'd not like to see what this country would have become without all the "scumbag" (to borrow a term from one of the posters) Irish, Italian and Germans who came here in search of a better life for their children.

1. To fight drug lords & to protect innocent lives (who may have to walk by the routes the drug lords use to get to their consumers).

2. To fight illegal immigration

As I said in another post, 'its one enemy of humanity', and that enemy enters the heads of people like the one who posted on here about taking example of the GErmans and the holocaust. His suggestion surely is not fueled by American sentimentalism, but by Demonic admiration, which is the enemy.

I read about one comment that said this was a sham. The person called these children "Mexican" children. The report clearly states that these children are American citizens. These children are "us" in American law. Just because they don't live on American soil doesn't make a difference legally. Their allegiance is to America. They deserve the best America has to offer them. If somebody doesn't like it, why don't they live in some other oppressed country where they can't vote or do anything without fear of what might happen to them if they don't live like their told to. Reading some of the comments, I think some may be to protective of the murderers who kill innocent people around the world. Murdering innocent people never wins the wars. It only gives the remaining innocent people more momentum to bring justice to the murderers. Perhaps a murderer can change, but never will there be a tolerance for murder.
