Why does this not ring true to me? Isnt their purpose in life to work the land and worship their God and not get involved in modern day society and all its hooplah? Now they're advertising stuff, "As seen on TV?" Im sure they dont sit around knitting, watching 'Little House on the Prairie'. And I am more than sure they dont make dresses and other items to be sold on the INTERNET....that would require a computer and the know how of working such a new fangled contraption.
Sounds rather hypocritical in my opinion.
I asked around my office and got some interesting view points on this matter.
Most agreed with what I had to say, but a few pointed out that they do what benefits them best. I have to say, I agree with that IF they are actually selling this product.

I don't particularly agree with much of the FLDS methodology or beliefs - but I CERTAINLY don't believe in the way the State of Texas ram-rodded their way in there and uprooted lives. This should have been handled in a much more civil and peaceful way.

I applaud the FLDS for keeping their heads up and staying true to their beliefs - although many of us disagree with them. Many people would have buckled.

I also applaud the FLDS for having the business mind to put for sale their clothing items that they make. Great thinking. Personally, I think it takes great talent to make something by hand and I would purchase a lot of other things made by hand by someone who put the time, labor, and effort into makeing it.

There are several young women in our community that I wish would shop at the online store! Some of these young kids need to cover up and stop wearing these trashy half covered clothing. Our youth could probably learn a good lesson in modesty from the FLDS ....although....thats about all I would want them to learn!

I remember seeing cell phones and computers used by the FDLS women on TV coverage, so they aren't outdated, and they also drive some fine gas guzzling trucks,vans. As I noticed during their time on TV, they are robots, the few tears we seen were not tears of a mother who just had her child taken from her.

I agree with Dave and many others regarding the duplicity with this group; however, this is still the good ole' USA and they've a right to hawk their goods. I doubt many will support it though. I won't.

While I wasn't brought up FLDS, I was brought up in an extremely narrow-minded, conservative, close-minded atmosphere cloaked in religion, love, family and bonds that to this day still affect me, often positively. I moved on from the restrictive religion and I had choices, even if my choices went against the norm. I wasn't shunned either. Famiy first and so it's just hard to fathom the shunning practices, let alone pre-teen/teen forced or obligatory plural marriages. The FLDS seems extreme, like any cult. I think it's sad these kids don't have a chance to learn more about the world we live in and no real choices.

It'll be interesting to see how this all progresses through the legal system. Too bad the State messed up initially. I hope these guys (and women too) are nailed, if guilty of child abuse in any form.

The FLDS and the Amish are not the only groups that use clothing as one method of setting themselves apart.
We have a Mennonite community nearby and the women in that group also do the "Prairie Look" (except for the ubiquitous white running shoes). They also wear a white fabric cover, kind of like a coffee filter or an old-fashioned nurse's cap, over their coiled-up long hair.
If that's the fashion look they prefer, so what? No harm done, eh?
W-e-l-l, maybe not. There is one thing that bothers me very much, even as I berate myself for being uneducated or judgmental. The Mennonite men dress pretty much like any other guys from our day and age, certainly nothing like Pa Ingalls. Most wear jeans or Dockers and long-sleeved shirts, and you wouldn'ty notice them mcuh if they passed you walking down the street. Except that they are accompanying women in obviously home-made long calico frocks.
The most incongruous family I've encountered consisted of a mom and a dad, two sons and three daughters. The four women could have stepped right off the "Little House" set but the guys were all about shorts, high-end shades, polos and Doc Martens. The word that came to mind, perhaps unfairly, was "Taliban."
I am keenly aware that Mormons, be they mainstream or splinter group, are neither Mennonites nor Islamists. My husband has Mormon ancestors, one of whom was the builder of the Mormon Tabernacle in Salt Lake City. (Several generations since, the family has made other spiritual and social choices!)
My point is that we didn't see much of the FLDS menfolks during that Texas commotion. What do they wear? If they too look like sodbusters, cowpunchers and Conestoga wagon drivers -- OK then. Their collective fashion choices neither add to nor detract from their already verifiable eccentricity.
However, if it's only the women and girls, and the very small boys, who are stuck in this time warp -- well, then, we might want to view these for-sale dresses, etc., with an eye that goes beyond their quaint and surely short-lived faddishness.

In their religion they believe that a man should have several wives if he wants to become exalted in heaven. Up until recently they felt that a woman's purpose was to become a mother. They don't have skills to get jobs in the city (or the education). They live in a world that is so different from ours. I only wish more people could help them to get out of the community. The second thing is this belief that they "shun" the outside world. They are taught to be "in" the world but not "of" the world. So yes, that means they have watches, some have cell phones, and some even know how to use a computer. I KNOW that must be shocking to some of you on here.

Finally, while I don't agree with their beliefs -- if you have noticed that Texas has made large mistakes. They took all these kids off of a phone call that didn't even happen from the ranch. Then they proceeded to say that all of these "kids" were impregnated and treated horribly. Turns out that most of the "kids" were consenting adults. So there were a few that weren't; but you have never seen a pregnant girl in high school...or even junior high school for that matter? The only difference is that these FLDS kids are being raised in a loving environment where they are taught to respect others, work hard, and believe in something that matters to them.

These clothes are not cheap because they are handmade in the USA. Try buying hand-made clothing anywhere, and you will usually find prices much higher than these.

And contrary to the posts above, the FLDS does not take any welfare, does not ask for any religious tax-exemption, and is one of that counties major tax-payers.

Their entire community, church, homes, and farm, were all built with their own hands, sweat, & personal money mostly earned from outside day jobs. Most people would think that an admirable and incredible achievement!

And.. the people above ranting about child abuse apparently have not been reading the news about the court cases.

Several hundred children & babies were hauled out of their homes, with ZERO due process or prior investigation. Many of the so-called children who had babies were actually adults, some as old as 27.

While it is clear that a few had underage sex, that proportion is far smaller than you would find in ANY inner-city apartment complex of the same population. And the FLDS fathers stayed around to look after their families.

When was the last time someone raided one of those public housing complexes, and took away ALL of the children, just because a some might be exposed to drugs, alcohol, and underage sex.. including a VERY high percentage of early teen pregnancies!

For that matter, most cities now have entire schools setup JUST for underage pregnant girls! Yet the FLDS had fewer than 7 possibly underage mothers. And those are 17, not an uncommon age to have children in most of the world. That is a far lower percentage of underage pregnancy than you will find in ANY major US city.

The FLDS way is certainly not my preferred lifestyle, but this country was founded by religious people who were being persecuted for their peculiar ways. Many of which would be objectionable to the people posting above.

And is the FLDS lifestyle any stranger, or worse, than 70's hippy communes, with free-love for all ages, multiple sex partners, group marriages, etc.? Millions participated in similar lifestyles. How many people of that generation were jailed and their children taken away?

And how do you want to define Polgamy? These people are not legally married by the laws of Texas, only by their religion.

Is that worse than Hugh Hefner, who has very publicly lived with the same 3 live-in girlfriends for several years? By all accounts, he has what amounts to a common-law marriage with them. Shouldn't that count as Polygamy? And there is certainly no religious belief behind his reasons for having a harem!

Or, how about the tens of thousands of low-life city guys who get multiple young girls pregnant, and leave them all to fend for themselves? Where is the condemnation and disgust at that?

These people live a lifestyle that is strange to many of us, but a LOT of people in this country live strange lifestyles.

Allegations of child abuse should always be PROPERLY investigated, but it is an atrocity to just take hundreds of children away from their loving families, on nothing more than the basis of rumors and a faked phone call.

After the initial hysteria, the courts found no evidence of systematic child abuse. Individual cases may be treated just as other cases in the rest of the country.. with proper legal investigation, not Gestapo type raids on entire communities.

The "men" of this cult are being supported in every conceivable way: Their "women" (is a 13 year old a woman??) provide the sex, maid service, child care, public speaking, and now the economic means for the men to live quite comfortably. An "enlightened" society? No, they're no better than the poor women who are downtrodden in other countries whether it's the Widows of India or the suffering in Afghanistan, the Sudan, and on and on. Brent, I agree. If gay marriage is okay, why not polygamy? They need to be CONSENTING adults, though-not little girls. That is just sick. Also, I think the dresses are a bit much, but they are better than the clothes a lot of teens wear today with half their butts showing. There needs to be a happy medium. I honestly can't believe some of the clothes parents allow their kids to wear in public. As a side note, the FLDS and the LDS are totally different. My best friend growing up was/is LDS and is nothing like them. They are very normal and are good people. Both of her parents worked outside of the home and her dad always helped out with things around the house. They encourage their children to further their education. I don't think they are a cult, either. I went to church withthem before and it was normal (but very long). The LDS (not FLDS) church also sends millions of dollars to help others after disaster too. My point is LDS and FLDS are not the same at all.

I can't get over how people will post comments when they don't know ANYTHING AT ALL about the subject. The FLDS does not deny that they feed off the welfare system. They are not "technically" married to all their underage "celestial brides", so those girls (and their babies) collect welfare. There are some shocking statistics in Jon Krakauer's book, "Under the Banner of Heaven" which demonstrate how this cult "bleeds the beast" by taking in something like $12 in government money and services for every $1 they pay in taxes. No, these people do not "take care of their own"--they will laugh and proudly tell you all the ways they get around paying taxes and getting government money. Hey, I'm all for modesty in dress and I personally LIKE the Little House in the Prairie look, but I would NEVER buy something to support these child rapists and patriarchal bullies and molesters. There's a sordid, creepy story going on behind the facade of such a pretty, old-fashioned, "storybook" lifestyle. Read Krakauer's book or Carolyn Jessup's book. Real eye-openers.

I have had the unfortunate opportunity of meeting several cult members and they are barbarians. They promoted satan, not a clean way of life. They raped and practiced group sex and abortion, they do not believe in education or retaining memories or earning a living or even paying bills. They are nothing but cold blooded killers who can't relate to a normal society. Many cult and satanic cult members become what is known as organized stalkers, a crime that is growing globally.
