Yet by Jan. of 1949, when the Berlin crisis was at it's peak, a significant majority of Berliners favored freedom over food. When the Soviets offered substantial food supplies from their sector to anyone who exchanged their western-sector ration cards for Soviet ones, only 5% took them up on the offer - despite an official ration averaging about 1,200 calories a day per person (if you could find it).

I loved the quote from a French officer, who was enraged at Soviet conduct. The Soviets were operating radio stations from two towers in the French sector which obstructed the flight path into a new airport built to help handle the airlift traffic. The French gave the Soviets until Dec. 16th to remove the towers, but they took no action. On the 16th the French Army surrounded the transmission stations and towers, herded the Soviet operators into trucks and drove them away, and then blew the towers. When the Soviet commander arrived to protest, he blustered "How could you do such a thing????!!!!" The French officer, unflustered, simply looked at him calmly, and said "With dynamite. At the base".

'Candy Bomber' won Berliners' hearts

I met Col Halvorsen when I was stationed in Iceland. My grandfather was with an maintenance company in France and Germany. He told us how many of the soldiers would make sure they kept stashes of candy, chocolate, and cigarettes in there pockets. When the children in France would see the soldiers coming, they would run to the soldiers and ask in French-accented English, "Chocolate for mama? After the blockade, every supply was vital, but none more so, it seems, than the spirit-lifting airdrops of candy and fruit. The trust between Germany and the Allies began that day and exists still. This is one of the few examples where the U.S. turned the tide of hate and distrust into lasting friendship between former warring nations. It's a sad comment on this administration's lack of humanity that it can't find that bridge with the Iraqi and Afghan people, too. It'll probably take the selfless actions of the men on the ground, not the higher-ups, to find and extend that olive branch again.

'Candy Bomber' won Berliners' hearts

A pleasure to read and reflect on what makes this Country so great and why we are here
God bless America!

'Candy Bomber' won Berliners' hearts

Its astonishing how amazingly uniformed folks like Gwen Ochs and Carl from Seattle truly are. Americans around the world do great things every day for no reasons other than that they care. Our military still feeds and helps thousands around the clock by building clinics, schools and repairing infrastructure in places like Iraq, Southeast Asia, Africa, etc. Had we been allowed to by the Myanmar Junta (now there is a real set of elitist creeps) our Navy would have been able to save thousands and help get that country quickly on the road to recovery, just like we did in the numerous cyclones, earthquakes, etc. The same is true of the various civilian organizations such as the Peace Corps, AID, etc.

Its the same country that produces the same kind of heroes that it always has. You just don't know or don't choose to find out, and unfortunately, choose to complain instead of joining them.

Halvorson was among thousands of heroes, who transitioned instantly from defeating the monster who was Hitler to saving the people who followed him from the monster who was Stalin. Its what we do, and why we remain the greatest country on earth.

'Candy Bomber' won Berliners' hearts

WE as Americans should have a great responsibility to uphold the spirit of “Hal”, a spirit of decency, kindness and humanity. In the last few years we have seen imbedded a spirit of hate, mischief, abuse, harassment, unkindness and a spreading of sadistic tendencies of certain leaders in this nation, especially in the state of Florida, were victims of violent crimes get shredded to a pulp by the political leadership. I am a naturalized citizen who has served and loves this country with all her heart. The decline of basic humanity in this country has been astonishing not only to foreigners but also to Americians who still do care. Here is a man who dropped candy and helped people, what a difference from the people who spread slander, hate and abuse victims of violent crimes in the state of Florida. We as Americans should be able to make a difference one by one, we all complain and if one speaks up and and tries to adhere others to practice what the bible states: To love one another we get bombarded by hateful ministers and Christians who are being instructed by a politican to demolish us for speaking the Truth, being told it is just a game for fun when the motive is to destroy and to devour. I remember the days were we all foremost were Americans and we did not even know if our friends were Republicans or Democrats, they were our friends and loved this country equaly and served. I encourage each one of the writers here to start one by one to bring this country back to what it once was, we can co it, only we the people. Our politicial leadership wants us to hate each other, calls us whiners. It is time we the people reach out across the aisles and not participate in this mudlinging, hateful environment we have allowed to be created and to be infiltrated in our lives by its leadership and the press. I encourage the state of Florida and the rest of the nation to get back to the Constitution of the United State and take an example of the heart of Hal and stop stalking people, keeping them from being employed and maybe bombard people with kindness instead of vicious nasty hateful games orchestrated by sick public servants and religious cults.
Hal you are the one the Lord would say to: Well done my servant.
What a great man who has made a difference for his generation, but it is up to us to make a difference for the betterment of this country in this generation and bombard people with kindness and not psycho terror and foul language being spewed at us from loud car speakers encourageing children to hate and kill. I was a child who at the age of 5 received a Hershey bar being thrown from a US tank and it always inspired me to come to this country and now I have people spew hateful words filled with intimidation and violations of my privacy under the cover of God and a Governor due to a criminal and a liar. What a change………. As for me I wish we had more candy bombers.............I salute you Hal !!!!
'Candy Bomber' won Berliners' hearts

I am an airlift pilot and have met Col Halverson (he signed his book, "Mercedes and the Chocolate Pilot" for my kids!) and heard him speak on a couple of other occasions. He is truly a kind man and a great American.

I have also flown into Iraq many times and deployed to Afghanistan. In response to those longing for a return to a time when our military wasn't evil, here's what I know:

Our military is still populated with good men and women, great Americans doing kind things (have we already forgotten the tons of rations dropped on the Afghan population during that conflict?). We spend hours packing, sorting, and delivering food, clothes, and toys to the local population in refugee camps. I personally have scores of pictures of grateful Afghan kids and their parents that would melt your heart...but there were no reporters there. Many also gave their warm socks and gloves to the Afghan guards on cold nights and shampoo was always in short supply because locals would always ask for it (why?--I don't know).

Don't forget our PRTs (Provincial Reconstruction Teams) risking their lives "outside the wire" every day to rebuild this country (that was destroyed before we ever got there). I hear similar stories from my friends returning from Iraq.

Yes we have Abu Gharib and video of a Marine cruelly throwing a puppy off of a cliff. I am confident there were some bad actors in WWII as well, but on the whole we are still committed to helping. Why the difference in perception evidenced in some of these comments? So much depends on who provides your narrative...
'Candy Bomber' won Berliners' hearts

Scott A. The common WW2 soldier was Joe Average, doing what had to be done, they were ordinary folks doing incredible things. Everyday americans were called up to be heros. They didn't always know the right thing to do, but they did their best. When people got out of line, there were rules and regulations, they got bent, but everyone did their best to adhere to what was honorable, sane, and moral. The author spoke of his own experiences, of how he didn't know what to do with a japanese prisoner who refused to work, and how when he asked his C.O. what to do he was refered to the Geneva Convention and told to stick to it like a bible. My own grandfather had similar stories, and like this author, I'm sure he would have denounced the current and past activities of those who have sullied our honor with the events in Iraq. For those of you who refuse to see it, the link between "The Candy Bomber" and these peoples responses is this: Would Hal have done these things? I seriously believe the answer is no. I think Hal is one of those people we can look up to for moral inspiration. He looked inside himself and found compasion for an old enemy and did his best to give them succor and aid when it was the responsibilty to do his best for other human beings. He acted with the highest honor and turned a simple item like candy into a way of giving people hope, and showing them they werent alone in a serious crisis. He acted as a soldier, as an American, and as a human being, which is sorely lacking in events today controled by our current political leaders. If Hal were president, you never would have seen him surround himself with soldiers on national T.V. and announce he was cutting their benifits, even as he sent them off to fight and die for a false cause. I doubt he would have sent them in the first place, and if he did, I doubt he would have sent them under the pretense of false claims and so poorly prepared.

'Candy Bomber' won Berliners' hearts

I myself spent 14 years as a Combat Medic in the US Army. I was medically retired last year (14 MAR 07). I spent 18 grueling months in Iraq and Afghanistan and I can say with much pride that a vast number of our soldiers serve with pride and compassion to the Iraqi people. I agree with Diego Sendero...we should send Hal to Baghdad and many other locations in the region to drop candy...he is a true american hero and we are lucky as a nation to harbor such patriotism....

'Candy Bomber' won Berliners' hearts

Arthur A. Bush a neo-nazi? Baloney Hitler was a nazi!!Dropping bombs on babies? It's a war and sometimes good people get hurt, but it is nowhere near the carpet bombing and civilian deaths that occurred during WWII! Please sit back and think before you speak - Hussein killed MILLIONS, people disappeared EVERY DAY! Fact - he used torture, chemical weapons, etc. on his own people. Our only mistake was not removing him during the first Gulf War, because people like Gwen and Carl live in a dream world where everyone gets along and there are no bad people. Today, Al-Qaeda and its ideals know no borders, and spread just like Communism did in the forties, fifties, and sixties. I see a very similar situation between our soldiers stationed in Iraq protecting the Iraqi people and us and those that were stationed in Germany protecting us from Communism. That being said, I agree that we should be dropping more candy today!!

'Candy Bomber' won Berliners' hearts

Colonel Halvorson, I salute you. I find it funny how often you can find a great story like this, and boom,in come the "I hate the government" people, who will refuse to believe anything good of anyone in this country, because to do so would be to admit that they are narrow minded, bigoted and..just wrong and uninformed, and too lazy to change their thinking, become informed, or do anything great themselves. We have many of the younger generation with no manners, no morals, no sense of right and wrong, and we have no one to blame but the parents who have not taught them the morals that were so prevalent in the generations of the World War 1 and 2 era. That said, we have many Americans today who were taught the higher way of living and do amazingly beautiful acts of decency and courage. If only the news would focus more on that, and less on the other. Just sign me a proud American.

'Candy Bomber' won Berliners' hearts

"...You can say whatever garbage you want to because they protect your rights!!!"

Respect for the men and women of the armed services is important; but don't feed me the line that they're "protecting my rights".

The word "protect" means "defend". While in college I studied history. I had interviewed many Germans who lived through WWII. One story that has always stayed with me was a young boy at the time who lived in sewers with his mother 24/7. He told me that he used to shake his fist in the air yelling dam yankees as the bombers flew over head. The he showed me a chocolate bar wrapper that he had saved. Then, as today, we were the only country who could have made a difference. Where were you when it was revealed he had a perfect chance to kill Bin Laden and did not?

Oh, that's right, you liked Bill Clinton. He was hip and cool and well spoken and a real guy who openly cheated on his wife but was so smart and felt our pain that it was OK. He was one of us. This nonsense of Bush being a Nazi and one of the worst leaders in history shows an ignorance of history and real monsters that is baffling. If I remember, the bad guys are the one's who snuffed out 3000+ innocent Americans in one day - led by the guy Clinton had in the bag, but let get away. The bad guys kill innocent people every day around the world on purpose - but they are losing because there are still brave men and women like Halvorsen who can fight the enemy one day and help the innocent the next. They don't ask for anything in return except a living wage and support from the people they defend...yes DEFEND.

How many more innocent Americans need to die before you understand this is war?

If you don't like Bush, great, but don't confuse him with mass murderers like Hussein, and don't confuse him with what American stands for. George Bush knows that he will be graded 50 years from now on whether he did everything in his power to protect us. 9/11 defined his presidency. Born in the old country. All my grand parents came to the U.S. in the 1880's or early 1900's. We have family mem bers in the military since before WWI. they chased Ponco Villa were gassed @ the battle of the Marne.
They were in the 82d airborne, & tailgunner on B-25's
during WWII. My brother was a red shirt on a flattop
in the fifties. I was a sp/4 during Nam.& on a missle base in Germany, I also did another 6 yrs during the 1980's trained in S.Korea, that still had over the D.M.Z. fire fights, and frequent tunneling from the Northern side to the South to infiltrate & run drugs.
I know its hard to believe now even for me, but it's true. We didn't get to bomb anybody with candy but we all did our duty during the world wars & and the cold war that wasn't so cold all the time. The deal is; my heros were the older men in our family. Not some muscle bound schmuk pretending to wrestle, nor a fake movie hero who can't even do his own stunts. I learned to be a man by being with real men when I was growing up. I really feel sorry for kids today..I'll be looking for the book & donate a copy to the Sandusky H.S. library..These kids could use it. I served in Germany during the cold war and I saw the wall come down. Germany like Japan were rebuilt on the backs of great Americans. It is a wonderful way to introduce this piece of history, humanitarianism, and courage in action to kids, even up to middle school.

'Candy Bomber' won Berliners' hearts

col. hal halvorsen, general george washington, president abraham lincoln, and many other graat americans, not to mention the truly great men and women thruout history , most of all jesus christ, became known as great, because they insisted on doing the hard, very unpopulat thing when everybody around them including their closet friends and family hated what they were doing or what they stood for. these people showed courage that gained them everlasting respect and admiration . meanwhile, those small minded folks around them who demanded they do the easy, popular, or expedient realpolitik thing have been completely forgotten or remembered in everlasting shame. God bless the hal halvorsens and george w. bushes of this world. FYI i am a lifelong voting democrat who believes his party long ago lost its moral autheority by promoting or at least tolerating the dishonoring of God and the principles which were given to found this nation in the public forum and the horrific slaughter of defenseless unborn babies in their mothers womb.

'Candy Bomber' won Berliners' hearts

hal halvorsen did what was right and it came straight from his heart regardless of what others thought. since when did caring what other nations think become more important than doing what is right? when did our international reputation become our god?

'Candy Bomber' won Berliners' hearts

hal halvorsen did what was right and it came straight from his heart regardless of what others thought. since when did caring what other nations think become more important than doing what is right? when did our international reputation become our god?

'Candy Bomber' won Berliners' hearts

hal halvorsen did what was right and it came straight from his heart regardless of what others thought. since when did caring what other nations think become more important than doing what is right? when did our international reputation become our god?

'Candy Bomber' won Berliners' hearts

To my knowledge my brother and I were the only American kids attending German schools in Berlin just after the airlift.
It was at the Konisius Catholic Boys'school that my brother learned from his schoolmates how deeply the airlift(a few yrs earlier)affected the starving Berliners.
One boy's uncle had a watch, a greatly prized heirloom which was most precious to him. This uncle and his family survived solely due to the airlift. It also cemented Germany as a staunch Cold-War US Ally. The battle for Berliner's trust (between the US and the USSR) was on. Easy. Do the same thing that these heros did in Berlin not so many years ago. Drop food and other needed supplies to tribal areas. Do random acts of kindness to people in that area of the world. Make Osama and those clowns look bad. Maybe we should get our troops out of Saudi Arabia. Think how much money we could save. Maybe doing what these guys and gals did would make things better. Offer help to those countries that don't have oil faster than we do now. Do what we can to show that Americans care. We need our government to make those that talk nothing of hatred for us look they they are talking out of their rear ends. If we can make them look bad by doing more to help them just because they need help and want nothing in return that we will win. I have always said that. But you also have to have a strong hand. Think about it. When growing up I did right because I was treatd right and if I got out of line I got my butt kicked. I grew up just fine. No problems. Same for these other countries. If we treat them like people, like they did the Germans after WWII then they will become our friends.
We need to be soft but also need to have that hardball type of personality as well. Remember. The USA was looked upon as someone you don't want to mess with Hitler's Generals warned Hitler of getting the USA involved. Read the memoirs of his Generals. Also Yamamoto of Japan said the same. This is a great country. We just need to stop being so divided and we could take care of problems.

'Candy Bomber' won Berliners' hearts

There's a great children's book about this event called "Mercedes and the Chocolate Pilot" by Margot Theis Raven. It is wonderful - the story and the history!

'Candy Bomber' won Berliners' hearts

All of you Bush bashers are forgetting the crates of food we dropped for the people of Afghanistan just months after the tragedy of 9/11.

'Candy Bomber' won Berliners' hearts

The proproganda warmachine at's its best, lets see whats best attempts will indorse fund's towards the congress over happy events like these horriable events r formed. for every negitive there is a equal amount of harm to be done.. americans what about the americano? in your war of pride n rightousness might as well be handed to a 17 year old jerislism child cause the country of iran, aghanistan, iraq does not concede to fighting but only hatred, cant arrest the enamys country because, he chooses to live there. it is not his country nor ours ... in the teachings of jesus chirst of naz,he always tought to turn the other cheek what twisted antiques... pitty for once for what we face time concerns r constitution next r constitutional rights then whats left might be america, confuse AIM me at stupidtable.(please correct me if iam wrong or confused please iam willing to calmly prove r governing goverments wrong doing's tho r goverment is perfect but just out of tune like a well played instrument. hey what about afirca america will be visiting the french at the south soon as well. viva la francea

'Candy Bomber' won Berliners' hearts

It was my great privilege to meet Col. Big people talk about ideas .... get it you drop outs?

'Candy Bomber' won Berliners' hearts

I am a naturalized immigrant from Vietnam and I have a place in my heart for what the Candy Bombers did for West Berlin. There are many things that this country have done that many people opposed mostly in the military arena. Having served also in the military, I can see that what the US does is meant for the better of things and not the worst.

What I can remember out of this story is when I was about 6 years old walking to my grandma's apartment, I was surprised to noticed something dropped from the sky. It was a "Gumby" figure. I was a kid so I was glad. I stood there and looked up to see where it came from. I saw a man wearing a yellow hard hat looking at me even before I noticed him. He looked at me for moment and went on back to his work. He just wanted to see my reaction from receiving the toy. The construction worker was an American.

From then on, it gave me hope that we may have lost our counrty in Southeast Asia however, the States might give us a better life. I of course didn't feel this way until I became an adult in American society but a little candy or toy can go a long way!(1982).
