In my youth I WAS a Republican. I was raised with the belief that Democrats were predominantly black women who had babies so they could collect bigger welfare checks. I think most of us that are Republicans would like our elected officials to actually stop giving our money away and to have some actual family values and morals. I was a lifelong Dem until the past few years, was voting for more and more republican on a state level. The long primary forced me to look at my own party and I did not like the hypocritical values they now seem to represent. Dems are Pro-Choice? Then why are they attacking this woman's decision to have a child at 17? She is an adult, in most states if she had committed a murder we would say she was an adult ready to accept the consequences of her action. I know the process to elect our President and I also know the process to send forces to war. THE PRESIDENT CANNOT DO IT. It takes Congress to declare war and even if the President commits troops to foreign soil, the War Powers Act limits the time they can be there before Congress has to declare war or vote to withdraw the troops.

My choice for President will be the person I feel will best hold Congress responsible for inaction because it's obvious that those of us who voted them into Congress aren;t doing a good job of holding them responsible for inaction...they keep getting reelected. My choice for President will be the person I best feel will veto stupid bills sent before him that include millions of my tax dollars to study the migratory patterns of the California fruit fly even when it's attached to a bill that needs to be passed. (Line item veto would be a wonderful thing.) My choice for President is someone who knows when diplomacy will work and when it won't and will recommend the appropriate course of action for Congress to act upon.

So, as an intellectual Republican, my choice for President has yet to be determined. I don't blindly vote the party line. I vote for what's best for this country based on FACTS and not from what Left or Right claims as fact.

Honestly, I haven’t watched the video above. I will after I post this message. My decision to do this was simply because I felt more comfortable answering the question first. I believe in small, yes small government. I do not think it is the governments’ responsibility to feed the world. I believe it is the responsibility of the government to protect our boarders. (Republican View)

I believe that there should also be a cap on how many children Welfare should cover and to be on Welfare, mothers must voluntarily go through short term sterilization which can be reversed after leaving the Welfare system. I believe that gun ownership is a right and should be treated just like getting a drivers license. Testing should be done every few years. If you own or possess a gun without a license its mandatory jail time – enough with the fines.

I believe in fair taxation. This means 10-15% on every dollar. YES EVERY DOLLAR. Enough with the exemptions, write offs etc. (Democratic View)

I believe in the right to choose. I also believe in the right to be who you are, period, end of story! (Democratic View)

I do not believe in Global health care. Has anyone noticed the countries with this system are failing their elderly and severely sick? Countries such as England and Canada have age caps on their Universal Health. I do believe in a re-vamped Medicare and I also believe that everyone should add into a personal health plan per paycheck, again, something like 2 cents per dollar. (Neither)

I believe that drug dealers, molesters, and rapists should get life in prison without possibility of parole. Period. (Republican View)

Why haven't I ever voted Republican? Because they have lost the way. They talk small government for social programs, then beef up military spending. The Bush Admin has cut taxes and increased spending, thus creating the need to raise taxes (which I reluctently agree is necessary). I won't register as a Dem because while I agree with the social ends they work towards, I believe they should be achieved through private and not public means.

But even being a republican or a democrat does not give anyone the Right to disrespect the views of the next person. Libertarians, Socialist and Green Party all have a say too. I think there is Republican and Democract in all of us and it just depends on how we weigh the issues that impact us at the time. I Also think that there are always shifts as you grow older as to how liberal or conservative you are.

While many may not like the views of the person who leads a political party does not mean that everyone who is in that Party carry the same belief or that they will leave their Party because at times various wings or groups take the most vocal position in the Party and affirm that their thought speaks for all. That's unrealistic, unfair and just not true.

I'm also Republican because I believe that government should not be intrusive into the lives of its citizens while still preserving the Right to protect the many or all of society which is a delicate balance. If all of us belonged to the same Party that would not benefit democracy. A voter should have two or more choices when going to the ballot box and as Americans for everything that we have been through we should be able to listen to each others ideas and thoughts and while we don't have to agree that exchange in a civil society is what makes us greater than all other nations in my opinion.

I don't think that individuals who are stuck on welfare for years and years are so "low on brain cells" that they can't take care of themselves at some point in their life. While someone might need a year or two of help to get on the right path, I don't think they're so "dumb" that they should be taken care of for the rest of their lives. I believe in individual responsiblity!

I believe a life begins at conception - not when the child is in the hand of the parent (speaking of partial birth abortions where the "fetus" can be 99% delivered, but if one piece of the body remains in the mother, they feel they can still abort it). I don't believe in spending tax payers money on stupidity or stupid items. Hmmmm, if you live below sea level and the water over takes the levees every couple of years and causes major flooding/damage, perhaps you might want to live further in land - or maybe you should be responsible for the choice of living in an unsafe area?

I believe in judges who interpret laws rather than make then - hmmm - I think that belongs to another branch of the government.

I think you should be in the United States legally in order to obtain Social Security benefits and don't think it's appropriate to send those benefits to individuals in other countries.

I favor drilling for oil here on our own soil as both an economic and saftey issue.

I believe in health care reform, but not socialized medicine.

Where the Repubs think it is your responsibility to educate your self and take care of you self like my father and millions of other that worked two jobs until he educated himself (night school) until he could promote high enough to work one job. Not everyone can be that responsible -for what ever reasons but there are programs for those people and families that need it. Increasing those programs to more and more people allows many to never have to be responsible enough to try.

Neither side has done America any favors lately on the mis-managed medicare and medicaid programs. And finally because if you give tax breaks to the millions of middle class and make it up by taxing the far less in number businesses, then the price of everything goes up and the burden is set back upon all consumers rich, middle, poor. duh.

In a perfect world you would not have to increase taxes - just cut out mismanagement, corruption, and pure greed and your taxes would go down - duh

Mike, here is how you are wrong: firstly, Bill Clinton launched cruise missiles against Bin Laden's compound, and had the CIA going after him at every turn. This is fact, go look it up. The decision to go to war against the Nazi's was made by a democrat, the decision to drop the first atomic bomb was made by a democrat, the marshall plan and monroe doctrines (what really won the cold war, not, as most on the left think, ronald reagan's chiseled features) were instituted by a democrat. I am a republican who is voting for Barack Obama. I am doing this for three reasons.
1. Hes a politician they lie but at least he is not completly making them up.
2.I got sick and needed help and was turned away by what standards my party put in place for our welfare system. (I worked and paid taxes 18 years before falling ill and needing help I did things on my own.)
3.He believes in rewarding hard work not how much money you have.(see caption in number 2 for why I feel like this I worked hard 18 years.)

I love the comments of the redhead. Apparently she does not realize that freedom is the state of being free, i.e. without restrain or hindrance on one's ability to think and act. The idea that we need someone to implement freedom is inherently contradictory. I do, however, appreciate her ever-so-insightful explanation of political science. While earning my political science degree, I learned about ideology in order to develop the ability to truly analyze political issues by seeing through the partisan rhetoric. The vast majority of the pro-Democratic responses clearly illistrate their need of Big Government. The common denominator seems to be a blatant disregard to objective facts concerning our nations history; both short and long term. The very reason the USA is the strongest, most charitable, wealthiest, and most free nation in the history of the world is because of the values and visions of the founding fathers. In response to some other comments. The reason we are weaker is because we have upset all of our allies- they no longer have our back. Also- democrats do not want to take away your guns- they want gun control to assist in keeping guns away from criminals. I am in full support of doing something about illegal aliens- but I also have a problem with all of our good jobs being sent overseas. First and foremost, I am an American, republican second. Having just relocated from the Midwest, an hour outside of Chicago, I saw what democratic policy has done to our society. Where a portion of the low income, single mothers have multiple children because they receive more welfare money. In fact, some even claim their children are mentally handicapped so that they receive several hundred dollars extra per month.

Don't get me wrong. I know that there are people out there that need help to get through hard times. Heck, in the early 80's the companies both of my parents worked for went out on strike. My parents had a combined income of under $6,000 that year. Then, both companies moved to Mexico. Still in HS, my brother and I each got jobs working in fast food to help make ends meet.

Not that I am totally against drilling in our own country. But if we use up what little supply we have (comparatively speaking), what will happen when our children or grandchildren CAN NOT get oil from other countries? Don't you think we may want to keep a little cushion on our own turf, just in case?

And I don't see God being shoved down anyone's throat. Quite the opposite! Our nation was founded on God. Now, the smaller minority of non-believers is making it impossible for us to even say Merry Christmas. In this country, we do worship God. We do have to pay taxes. And we do have to answer for our own actions. If you don't like it here, try living in another country. I bet you’ll come running back. We definitely are not perfect. But then again, who is?

Seems like many republicans want to make their own decisions and not have the government interfere. Funny, that's how I feel about a woman's right to choose.

But more generally, it sounds great for everyone to look out for themselves without the government butting in. Problem is that many issues fall through the cracks and there needs to be policy to catch them. In a free market economy, for example, when companies are busy competing with each other, the environment suffers. Or all the talk about parents being the ones to discuss sex ed with their kids instead of at school- well, YOU may think you're qualified, but what about the parents who shirk their responsibility? For all the religious right's righteousness, I am disappointed that they are so reluctant to help those who cannot help themselves.

What I am seeing here is a bunch of people who like to take things to the extreme. Either by blaming one party or another for things like 9/11 (fault lies on both side, it was being planned during Clinton years, but its also not like Bush came into office Sept 10 or went gangbusters on terrorists upon coming into office).
Things are not black and white, they are not good or evil. There is gray area. For example saying that all welfare is bad. Last time I checked we are all beneficiaries of welfare (public schools, public roads, public police force, fire department), taxes pay for all of these things. So don't try to make it sound like all taxes are evil, they are not.
Also the Republicans in Washington, especially the Bush administration, are not conservatives in the traditional sense. If they were we not have the national debt that we do, and we would not have seen the reckless foreign policy that Bush has enacted.
For the record I am conservative, but not a Republican. I am anti-abortion (except in certain extreme cases), am an NRA member, and hate the idea of big intrusive govt. Unfortunately Bush and co. have turned the party and the govt into "big intrusive govt." The Republican party has lost its way. They are no longer the party of Lincoln or Teddy Roosevelt.

I am a Democrat, and have been all my life, but I am curious about some of the beliefs most Republicans seem to hold:

1. Right to Life - I'm glad I have never had to face the horrible decision to end a pregnancy for any reasons. Abortion is abused as a form of birth control. But what troubles me about so called pro-lifers is that the protection seems to end once the babies are out of the womb. Why not fight for the protection of helpless babies by insuring that they have access to proper nourishment, healthcare, a good education and a decent place to live away from crime and drugs. Is this what is meant by "big government," supplying needs to the less fortunate? Or are these babies just more people who want to live on welfare. It seem there are many people who will protests against pro choice clinics but would not be caught dead protesting for a free lunch program. These babies are going to grow up and need help.

2. Why does it seem that republicans wants the government out of their lives except when it comes to the Christian religion, then government should define morality issues like what defines marriage? I am a proud Christian woman and I don't need my government to define my God! Jesus Christ himself separated church and state when he said, "Render unto Ceasar what is Ceasar and render unto God what is God."

3. 9/11 was a tragic time in our history, but somebody please tell me why we invaded Iraq instead of putting all our force into getting bin Laden when there was no WMD or direct link? Yes we cannot back down to terrorists, but can we afford to stand alone in this world ruining our alliance with other countries? ... we almost did that. So before anyone accuse me of not being patriotic, or give me the tired old response, "Well if you don't like this country, leave," know this I bring these up because I truly want to discuss these issues. I want to learn from those who think different from me, and share my point of view in a democratic way. That's why this country is so great! I still believe that even though we disagree in views and opinions, we all can agree that it's a blessing to live in a country where we have the right to express them freely. All I know is that he did send out military to respond to the attacks mentioned and he sent troops to hunt Bin Laden who was moving around a lot at that time unlike now here he is in one place and Bush isn't addressing that. Also, I remember reading about Clinton's people telling Bush and his people about the Bin Laden threat and Bush saying that he "was not interested". I remember that and I remember being stunned that he would not care and Bush stated that all he was interested in was "getting rid of all things that were there from the Clinton administration". So, it's malarkey to say that Clinton did nothing. It's a bold-faced lie and the liars telling it know it.

Anyways, in my view both parties do things that I disagree with but things which are important to me, such as the economy, environment, and education I would lean more to the left on. I'm all for a tax break for the lower 98% of the country. Bush has done horrible things to the EPA and set back environmental standards which will end up costing more money(its always cheaper and easier to prevent than to clean up). Also, creating more nuclear power plants is possibly the worst idea ever. It keeps us less safe at home and creates waste which could to irreversible damage to our country. Yucca Mountain can't hold it all. I don't really care that much about Iraq in general besides I pray that our troops stay safe and out of harms way. I don't understand what the difference between terrorist killing military persons or "innocent" people as long as the killing is happening. At least we could fight them in Afganistan where they originally were and still are.

I would have voted for McCain 8 years ago and I think we would have been much better off if it was him then. His party has had quite a long time to "fix" this country even though I'm not sure much was wrong with it to begin with. It's sounds stupid, but change is needed and I don't think McCain is the guy anymore.

Governor Palin's pregnant teenage daughter is a child having a child. When this baby comes into the world, this teenager will not have the financial ability to care for it. Thankfully, her mother being the governor of Alaska, or possibly the Vice President of the United States has the financial ability to make sure that the baby has access to quality health care, child care, and education. (Rember,Gov.Palin wil not be the child's mother) But what about all of the other teenage mothers in this country who made a choice to have sex and got pregnant, whose parents are not Governors, but working class people struggling to make it? Are their babies not entitled to have access to the same quality of health care, child care, and education as Governor Palin's grandchild? It is ironic that Governor Palin and John McCain are in favor of cutting funding to programs that would help to make sure that other children born to young, financially unstable, unwed mothers have access to these same benifits. Also, the cost of health care for Governor Palin's grandchild will most likely be paid for by either the State of Alaska, or the U.S. Government. (Tax Payer money - Go figure!)

I am a Democrat and I think that abortion is wrong, but I do not belive that there should be a Fedral Law baning abortion. You can not legislate morality! Also, you have all of these "Evangelicals" who are supposed to be Christians, but you never hear them talk about issues in terms of being a sin or not. But the test should be whether GOD sees it as a sin or not. When we look at things from that perspective, the we open up a whole other can of worms. Then they can't just hang their hats on the abortion issue (which by the way is a sin). You have to look at all sin such as stealing, killing, lying, fornication, adultry, greed, racisim, jealousy, envy, lust, apathty for the suffering of mankind. The list goes on and on. I am a Democrat, and not a Republican, because nothing is free. I work hard and make a good living and in my salary range technically I'd be better off as a Republican. Hey like everyone, I hate paying taxes--. But let's get real--to have a good life you need services--schools, post offices, trash collecting, parks for your kids to play in, safe roads infrastructure,police and firemen research to tackle diseases etc etc.--and guess what? SERVICES COST MONEY! In the Republican version of the world (or libertarian) all of these services are paid for privately, by fees from individuals. So rich people get great everything-good doctors, good research--and poorer people, even if they are only 5 years old, get nothing. Not so good--I mean it's good for me, in the short term I suppose because I get to keep more of my money--hell I could buy a boat! But it's not good for society. In the Democrats approach, higher taxes are used to pay for or at least off-set the cost of these "commonly" used services--services all of society needs and benefits from. This means that more hard working people can enjoy the greatness of this country and its opportunities. And for the most part, this approach works, sometimes really well (take Biomedical research funded by the NIH! no single private organization could afford the successes that this federally funded institution has produced!It took us all coming together!)and sometimes maybe not so well (in my mind, the funding of the Iraq war over a focus on Osama Bin Laden was a waste of my money, but Uncle Sam just sent me a bill, he didn't ask for my opinion). But even if the Democratic approach is not perfect (no system will be), it is better than the alternative. This is NOT socialism--shoot American Democrats are NOT socialists!--people who earn more still get more, a lot more--but at least everybody gets something half-way decent and that seems fair to me. Why should ANY child go hungry, not have access to medical care or education? Why in this rich country should that ever be true? But in the Republican way,that can be true, and some people get nothing--nothing at all, while some people get to own 10 houses. I live in a beautiful city with parks for kids to play in on every block and great schools--in large part because of taxes! I would have it no other way because I want all children, who are innocents, to have opportunity, not just my own who just happens to be lucky enough to have parents that make a good living. When I meet people who complain about our high taxes I tell them, politely, to move--they are free to move to small conservative towns where taxes are much lower, or other countries where taxes are much lower. What they will find there are fewer parks and services and more gated communities. But I am proud of my "liberal" town and the quality of life it affords most of its citizens, regardless of income.

I am republican because there are too many liberals in the democratic party...homosexual and lesbians wanting to marry and be parents to our future generation, abortions- used as a form of birth control,foreigners- coming in taking our jobs the born americans need, people doing unthinkable things to each other..who can handle the freedom of liberality, and the lord is no longer involved in anything todays society and government is doing..which is what our country was founded on and as working middle class tax payer with kids in college i can't affaord any more taxes to fund such foolishness.

how come no one knows the history of the parties and how government was started. I cant amagine how most people choose to be republican. If any minority is a republican thats crazy because yuo should only be a republican if your are white with a family history from the beginning of this country. If you were not a free person when this country started then you should not be a republican. Learn about history before you become a part of history. Its time for a change. If whites are a minority by 2040 then there will be no republican party. Think about it dummies......

This whole rant here by republicans is a joke. As McCain pledges party unity, these people here, and presumably most voting republicans, want division and the republicans to conquer. Most really are delusional about what is means to be American (whatever that is relative to the rest of humanity)

When was the last terror event on American soil? We are kept in "terror" on a daily basis about the "terrorists" coming to get us. Whenever the weather starts to change and it looks like the Dems have the upper hand it starts to get bad... the Reps cry "the terrorists are after us again!"... just who the hell are they anyway? Don't let your guard down... they are watching you! I am surprised you people can sleep at night since you hinge on every word they spoon feed you. Also, as far as intelligently researched facts go let's not forget that numbers and percentages can be made to tell any story you want. Just because you throw in a statistic, it doesn't make a republican's lies any more factual, it just makes it more believable. Democrat might say they war in Iraq has been unsuccessful. Republican says it has been 90% successful... Neither is factual... Just exactly are they measuring it against? You don't know and neither do I.

I have voted Republican all of my life, however, given the past eight years of reckless spending, tax cuts only for the imperical wealthy, an unjustified war that has only provided loss to American lives, and an economy that barely ranks above the depression years of the 30's. I can't risk that my next four years will be the same. I am a Republican now voting Democratic, and I approve this message!
