By Charles Hadlock, NBC News
At dawn's first light, the devastation from Hurricane Ike is becoming clear.
The Hilton Hotel here in Clear Lake, Texas, where we've set up our satellite truck to report on the storm, is taking a beating.

This past March, 2-1/2 years post-Katrina, my former neighbor, an older widow lady, was finally able to move back into her home post-Katrina. Many, many families on the Mississippi Gulf Coast are still in temporary housing as they attempt to rebuild their lives. The people of Galveston/Houston and the surrounding areas are now facing those same challenges. In the coming weeks and months, please don't let them become just a sidenote on page 12. Please make sure they know they are remembered, even long after the last of the wind has died down. Their true struggle has only now begun. Let's please not forget that this time.

Hints of devastation on Galveston Bay

Looks like they have pretty shoddy or no building codes in Texas ! Imagine allowing buildings in a hurricane prone area with windows and doors that blow out without even getting a direct hit from a cat 2 hurricane. What are they thinking ?
Hints of devastation on Galveston Bay

i'm hoping for still photos posted covering each side of the island.

Hints of devastation on Galveston Bay

I hope everyone is OK, I'm saying my prayers for y'all. I wish I were there to help. I'm in Montana for the summer.

Hints of devastation on Galveston Bay

<<<this is just great. you should not live so close to the ocean, this is what happens and MY tax $ has to pay for it.>>> Kevin Goodchild....

Its truly selfish, ignorant, uncaring bastards like you that give americans a bad name. how bout those who lost loved ones, or everything they owned and don't have a place to live??? thats what you should be worried about you selfish jerk!!!

Hints of devastation on Galveston Bay

Tired Of Bailing Out Idiots, Wash. Yes, all residents should have evacuated before the storm, but they are still humans beings, and we are still Americans, who help our own. That is why our society has decent, caring individuals who choose to work in law enforcement, fire fighting, healthcare and the military. What about people living through the droughts just a few years back? The tax dollars you speak of helped them. The wildfires? Tax dollars at work. Oh, and what about the HUGE impact of 9/11? Those of you in New York City that are posting and saying they are morons for living near the coast? Well damned if you do, and damned if you don't. Hundreds of Americans lived off of tax dollars after 9/11 also. People are rescued everyday for ignoring safety warnings and don't get slammed by people on blog's. This is a massive scale so therefore all of a sudden it's about "your tax dollars". Give it a break. People are in trouble and need help. We should all give a little extra to the American Red Cross and other relief agencies that will be helping out. Really where are people supposed to live then? There are earthquakes out west and tornados throughout the country and how about wildfires which could happen anywhere there is a forest. And lets go there with snow...... We who live up north not only have a chance of being hit by a tornado, we also get hit with blizzrads and ice storms. Now since we all know these are possiblities we still choose to live here... Come on people lets no act like a bunch of ninnys and be a little human. Natural disasters and some that arent natural happen and we need to be there to support those who are effected by them. And another thing I have seen for my own eyes the distruction that snow, ice, floods and tornados can do to people and their lives and there are some people who dont have the money to pick up and go, or to have a generator when the power goes down or even enough food to get them through two days. How about our elderly who live on a fixed income? You who feel so hateful agianst these people who are now in need of help should be ashamed of yourselves and you better hope that the day you go before to be judged God wont be as harsh on you as you have been to others. I pray for you all including those people who put money before lives.... (so all that being said where in the United States are we supposed to live?) Is there any place "safe in your view"? And lets not forget the comment about animals. People who feel that their lives mean nothing and that people should just walk away and not look back is heartless and unsettling. You know they are like children, they didn't asked to be brought into this world and they didn't choose the families that they have, and they can't protect themselves the way us adults can do. I mean can a dog or cat or horse, etc.. get in a car and drive? Come on lets think about it. Not every person is able to leave with their pets and those people who truley love them dont walk away with a light heart. I feel for those people and the pets they had to leave behind.

Hints of devastation on Galveston Bay

I agree that everyone should evacuate when they are given the early warnings that they received. If you're going to live anywhere, make sure you have insurance and then plan ahead for any disasters you may have to face...Tax dollars should be used to repair infrastructure, not to replace a home you didn't have insured or to pay your living expenses because you weren't prepared. It was difficult, but it wasn't impossible.

Hints of devastation on Galveston Bay

Thank God for waking up us complete in our 5 senses. I did however evacuate and the traffic was bad but not anywhere close to the RITA evacuation. It took us about 10 hours to get to Austin (normally a 3-4 hour trip).

Alot of the damage is to the seawall where the media is reporting at, but that is what the seawall was made for, to protect our island from surge. It was built after the 1900 storm, by the sounds of things so far there is alot of water inland but not as bad as if we did not have the seawall. The wall sacrificed itself to spare Galveston more damage in my opinion. A friend who stayed there (who works at the San Luis) drove by our house and said it was okay just water on the streets.

There is nothing we can do about natural disasters, Galveston has withstood many hurricanes and storms, so our decision to live in those areas are not bad. We just hope we are able to get home as soon as possible.

Hints of devastation on Galveston Bay

They think that they live in Paradise and are so proud of themselves. You play, you pay. I moved from Florida after a lifetime there. If youlive in a hurricane area and you cannot afford to lose your job and everything that you have...you move! Get it?

Why should the "government" (everyone else) bail you out because you are in water way over your head, or over your head in business, or bought a house that you knew that you could not afford? It is ridiculous to try to punish people for their choice in location because they live there for generations or found jobs in these cities. Everyone benefits from the business in the second largest port in the USA.

And yes, some people do not have the means to get out of the city. And even if you have a car and money and you are willing to leave all your life's possessions behind, it is still dangerous to evacuate.
More people died during the evacuation efforts during Rita then from the storm itself. It caused so much congestion that it took about 18-20 hrs by car to get to cities that are normally only 3-4 hrs away. So, I can understand if you do not want to risk getting stuck on the road in your car when a hurricane hits!

Hints of devastation on Galveston Bay

I live in Houston just outside of the evac areas. It is a callous gut reaction of someone who has in no way been affected. Seems to me that Kevin's comment belonged in an entirely different thread.

If ever I get an evacuation order from an official who was told by an expert that staying is dangerous, I am going to take it.
