This is a perfect example of the potential of all kids and teens. We need to keep challenging them and stop pampering them and dumbing down life. Schools now are a breeze and everyone gets an A for effort. Acting out is no longer a kids fault, it's a "disorder". This teaches kids nothing, and makes them helpless to shape their own future.

In real life you are challenged, your feelings may get hurt, you may not make the team, and you may fail. Things might get hard, or seem impossible. But they need to learn at a young age to try again. These teens stepped up to the challenge and should be proud. They will remember this experience for the rest of their life, and Barrington Irving made a positive difference for 60 teens.

For those who are curious: It is a Zenith Zodiac. www.zenithair.com In that time frame it was almost certainly a kit and not a "scratch build", but they still had to do at least 51% of the construction in order to meet FAA regs for an "experimental". That's a lot of rivets.

Barrington Irving has done what every adult should be doing... Give kids the opportunity to excel. He did not say, if you can do it. He did not say, we'll put it on display. He did not even say, if you have the right skills.

He simply said, here's the equipment and materials you'll need, here are some people to give you the info you need. You build it, I'll fly it. Irving gave those kids a sense of belonging, a sense of responsibility, and a feeling of pride that cannot be surpassed. He is a hero for giving those kids a chance to be heroes and they, in turn, will take their memories of this summer into adulthood and, not only will it keep many, if not most, off the streets and away from drugs, gangs, and self-destruction, but it will also lead them to extend that same kind of trust and faith to children of the next generations.

What an amazing man is Barrington Irving and what amazing young people!

Truly an amazing feat; they should be proud of their accomplishment. As to the adults involved, they already have their reward - seeing the faces of the students after the plane lifted off.

I experienced that feeling as part of a FIRST robot team at a local high school. I will never forget the kids' faces after seeing something that THEY designed, THEY built, THEY put their hearts and souls into, come to fruition and perform a task. Many of them had never used a drill or screwdriver and the transition over six weeks was awesome to behold!

All it takes is a little help and a willingness to try.

So why not. This isn't new - here in England, up until 1946, most children left school at age 14. It is certain that many of them went into the aircraft industry and helped to build Spitfires, Hurricanes Lancasters and the other aircraft that were used in WW2.

Great job, this shows again what people can do when you demand better than "OK" from them. I'm so tired of schools/teachers who give a passing grade to get rid of the problem. DEMAND quality! We did this with the CCC back in the '30s - took inexperienced people and made craftsmen of them.

On another point, a whole lot of the problem in building an airplane is the government regulation. Consider: you need some strength for the main spars and engine mounting, to carry the load. But in many cases, controls are simple pushrods or cables. An airplane doesn't have a transmission or differential gears like an auto. And have you seen a small plane with power windows or air conditioning system - NO! But any gearhead can build a dune buggy, kit car or "rod", because the government hasn't buried him in regulations and inspections.

But, take nothing from the students - salute!

I have ben building model planes for ten years, this is not and unsumoutable lesson for smart kids to learn. Some little kids build models from their first days, and understand what's needed and intended to build and make one fly. The principles of flight are the same for both models and real ones. No different. There are kits ALMOST anyone can build, but it helps to be able to read, and use the proper tools.

I find the lack of leadership in our school systems to inspire and challenge youths in the fields of science, mechanics, physics, and other hands on studies a depressing commentary on America as a whole. I'm 46 and if I did half the things I used to do as a kid I'd be in prison for being a terrorist, or some other fear mongering adjective.

You can't learn everything you need to learn about the sciences in a classroom. Why are corporations and local businesses much more involved in youth programs is beyond me. You can't open up minds to intellectual curiosity by treating young people as cattle, on a corporate farm.

Our country is fat dumb and lazy....deal with it. Our government is corrupt, our Government As Mother idiology is stifling...you have to employ risk....fear...challenges...to manufacture courage, charactor, and substance.

Awesome job for those kids down in Florida. My high school (St. Rita HS, Chicago, IL) had a similar program back in the 60's. That plane is now sitting in the Experimental Aviation Assoc. (EAA) Museum in Oshkosh, WI. EAA has local chapters all over the country -- many do youth outreach through their Young Eagles program.

I think this is great! As a young girl, my sisters and I used to help our dad work on his vintage Cessna 190 or 198 I can't remember which now, but a big old tail dragger, at the Tamiami Airport in FLA. My youngest sister was so little the only thing she could really do was polish the belly of the fuselage, it looked like a polka dot, very shiny circles underneath. I got to rivet across the wingspan because I was light enough to scoot across and my dad would hand me the rivets. Each time we finished a project we would go for a test flight around the field. We also built a piper cub, fabric covered plane in our home garage. We really loved those days. Although none of us went into aviation we love travel and now even our children realize as long as you can fly there, it's not far. When my niece found out you could fly to China, it suddenly did not seem like this far off region but a mere plane ride away. Aviation makes the world a tiny and very fun place.

I think that we often have low expectations of our children in the name of "self-esteem", but lack of failure does not boost self-esteem, it's failing and persevering that does the trick. Let me point out that this is also being demonstarted daily in our armed services. I spent over years in the Marine Corps. Part of that time was in Naval aviation. I was always surprised and full of admiration at the aveerage age of the ground personnel that maintain naval combat aircraft and their support equipment up to and including aircraft carriers. At least 25% of this sup[port personnel group is under 20 years of age. These are young people that maintain the most sophisticated weapons in moderen day. They are challenged, mentored and enpowered. You only have to read our nabal aviation history for their perfformance record. Mr. Barrington has only moved this resource to the private sector. Old timers BEWARE; our young folks are up to the challenge.

This is amazing. These kids have been given memories of a lifetime. We don't give enough credit to teenagers. They are amazing. I coach a group of teenagers to build a competition robot that weighs 130lbs in 6 weeks. These kids and so many others WOW me every time I turn around!

If we stop plastering all the bad stuff on the front page that teenagers do and start showing what the other 90% are doing, then I think crime would go down.

As a former Avionics Tech/Pilot that holds a degree in Aviation Science and Multiple Licenses and certifications from our Federal Government, my only question is how many kids dropped out along the way and how many are continuing their growth for knowledge for the demanding field of aviation?

There is no doubt this is a very serious challenge, few can accept the real challenges Aviation can bare. Most can't hack the constant training and education, the checks and balances for quality and safety, personal dangers associated with handling the materials used in maintaining and refurbishing, in climate weather operations, add the low pay for the amount of experience required to do the job, and the availability of good organizations to work for with quality people that can continue your growth as a technician. Why wouldn't aviators attempt to recruit young, motivated individuals that can bring opportunity to an improperly, over regulated, dying industry.
You can't make an Aviation Tech, only an Individual change make themselves a Tech. through the hard work and impeccable detail that can be the difference between life and death. Let’s face it a career in aviation isn’t as glamorous as it’s made out to be in the movies, it ranks just under being a farmer although there are many similarities, hard never ending work, you work with plumbing one minute, electrical the next and then trying to understand what the person that broke it is trying to explain.
Congratulations on your introduction into aviation, now that you're tech, go pull the toilet out of that 400A so we can run a few wires for the customers ipod.

This is a "kit aircraft" and it could be more accrately said that the kids "assembled" the aircraft.
Even this is no small task, but let's keep it accurate as to just what this is all about.
Such an aircraft as this would we worth about $400,000 depending on avionics and the kit, perhaps, $150,000 and the engine and prop another $50,000.

A stunt? You've got to be kidding. Did you watch the CNN news clip? Those kids have been inspired to pursue dreams they may not have ever thought of pursuing before. So, you've built a plane . . .have you ever mentored a troubled teen? Anyone can build a plane from a kit. . . it's far more serious business to turn a kid's life around. If there's a cavalier attitude being demonstrated, I wouldn't be looking to florida. . . maybe the mirror?

Wow. Great story. Some good comments too. Some real BS ones also. The point was to give children something to do, that was challenging, and something other than a bunch of nothing to do on their summer break. I thought the idea was great, especially since, I get tired of kids whining all summer about nothing to do but get in trouble. By the way, that Columbia 400 he flies for himself, those are fun to build. I helped build that plane, and it's not easy to build a plane

It's really nice to see news like that admist all the negative reports that's on going, like what many of the other commemters have point out on. More importantly, i believe that the world needs more and very much more poeple like Barrington Irving. A single Barrington Irving can change the life of so many kids, i believe and hope that this will carry on. Such a magnitude display of love for the people by Mr Barrington Irving. If only we have more poeple in the world like him in different places and sectors, if only. It would be a dream come true, hopes will be relighted, love to be spread around. This world really needs to be healed. That intensity of the passion of trying to reach out and help people that you do not even know.. There's only when people will be real human beings, where the world can be at peace and in unity. "Heal the world, make it a better place"..

Fantastic! Fabulous! The young people who made this aircraft have done something that only a small percentage of people have accomplished. Most who have built airplanes are much older. No doubt they learned some things about aircraft, but more importantly they learned about how incrediible it can be to commit to learning, to trust others, to use their knowledge for positive things, and to have a dream - and by a no-excuses effort mold it into a reality!

Too many people are afraid to step into their own greatness. These youth have begun that journey.

I applaud Barrington for giving those kids a once in a lifetime opportunity. But quite frankly I think Jessie Jackson, the NAACP, Martin Luther King Jr. and Al Sharpton would have screamed foul if the race of all of the people involved had been diffrent. Think about it.
