It IS New York, the city that will always hold my heart. Quite frankly, my husband and I are fervently waiting for the right opportunity to come up so we can move back HOME! Mr. Young has tapped into the City's pulse, and he gets it. I look forward to the day when we can move back. Meanwhile, I'll have Christmas in NY to look forward to. I can't wait.

Subway warning doesn’t break holiday stride

Fear is a terrible thing to live with...that's why I trust God for my safety and go about my business.

Subway warning doesn’t break holiday stride

L. New Yorkers are tough - oblivious (in a good way) to the constant threats out there. The author is right: there is much more to fear than a terrorist attack in NYC. Can it happen again? Of course. I moved from New York City last year after living there for 10 years, and it's good to know the subways have turned around so dramatically: fares are cheap; there's no more overcrowding or pushing; passengers smiling at one another; the panhandlers seem to have disappeared; and if Stoke Young's train was only held on the tracks once, the system must be running on schedule far more regularly than it was a year ago. Riding the subway used to be the most miserable thing about living in Manhattan--not as long ago as the 1970s, but as recently as last year--and I'm delighted to hear that it's improved so greatly and so quickly

Subway warning doesn’t break holiday stride

Terrorists WANT us to live in fear. The L train in particular is a crush during rush hour, with folks pushing to get on. Don't tell my boss, but that's one reason I tend to go to work after rush hour, and head back to Brooklyn after the evening rush. And yes, some trains are delayed, but major delays are rare in my experience. Finally, as for smiling, it really does happen, particularly amongst friends but also on occasion between strangers.

Subway warning doesn’t break holiday stride

Gosh, I heart NY sub, wish I could make it work here. I had a awesome ride recently on my summer NY trip. To the native New Yorkers itching to return; I did just that last year after nearly 20 years living in other parts of the country. I lasted exactly 10 months! The apartment living, having to move your car to a new parking spot every night, seeing brand new dents/scratches on my brand new car almost weekly, constant attitudes and noise, the subway crowds/smells. The migration of people into and out of the city is as dynamic as any time in it's past. Now instead of arriving from Europe they are coming from all parts of the US as well as the world. New York will never loose it's allure and the people who live there will never loose their spirit because New York is where the American dream has and will always live. It takes guts to leave your home where ever it is in the world to come to a city as tough as New York and that emigrant mentality shows itself in it's current and past residents. That is why the ones that no longer live there remember so fondly when they did. The spirit of New York is the American spirit of hard work and endless dreams of what you can achieve. I hope New York will never again be the target of terrorists but if it is, the US and the world will rally around them because in our hearts we are all New Yorkers.

Subway warning doesn’t break holiday stride

Give up the coffin nails, Mr. Young.

Subway warning doesn’t break holiday stride

It's not just a city, it's a "state of mind", as Billy Joel said. As a native Brooklynite, yes I miss still being there. Lived in NY for many years before moving to the midwest. I did the same trick, going in after morning rush and staying until after evening rush hour. Nice to see things are the same, one threat or the next. When WTC hit, it did throw everyone for a loop, but so quickly (and not forgettting), the great people in the city defiantely went back to their routine, including riding the subways or the PATH. Nice to see things have not changed this day.

Subway warning doesn’t break holiday stride

Born in Dallas and raised in NYC, I do long to return home because it's where I need to be. It made me sad, and yes, it made me scared. How do you prepare yourself for something that is not supposed to happen? You expect when you get in a car that you could be in an accident. But who expects to be blown up at work, or on the way to work? Who expects to never see their father, or brother, or mother, or sister again? But bragging about buying smokes like you are somehow above death?? That's just bad taste. "New York will take care of itself." What does that mean? The people are what make New York.
When we lose any of them we lose a little piece of ourselves. And riding the subway is an act of bravery. Ask anyone who rode the subway into Manhattan following Sept. 11 after hearing on the morning news that it was an Orange level terror threat day. Yes, we have a lot to be thankful for. Let's not forget how much.

Subway warning doesn’t break holiday stride

I wont sell my soul for a dollar bill. I always respond that I'm from New York as opposed to saying that I'm from the USA. Without fail I'm received as if I'm from the place I'm visiting before I'm told about a friend, brother, cousin, nephew etc. who is living in New York. I'm treated like a welcomed guest from that point on. Perhaps the people are reciprocating for the way that New York and its people accepted their friend or family member. Humankind will achieve its intended condition when the Spirit of brotherhood between New Yorkers and the rest of the world spreads to all the people of the world so that all people see each other as fellow New Yorkers. New York's mass transportation system makes interaction among its ridership both necessary and possible. Maybe New York's mass transportation model should be emulated around the world to achieve tolerance among people and peace among nations. I admire the bravery and celebration of life I am hearing from the NY folks, but I agree with Alex above as well. As a mother of two young children, I was afraid on a recent trip riding the subway. Not of 99.9 percent of the folks around, but of that crazy misguided element that is wreaking havoc in nations around the world. It isn't worth it to me to risk my children's lives out of bravado or any other reason. Not to say we should cower in fear. But if there is any kind of credible threat, I don't think that we should ignore that....it hints at the youthful arrogance and ignorance even that Americans are known for around the world, and I don't mean this disrespectfully at all--I know it comes from a better place, but perhaps also a naive one...I don't know what the answer is, but all of you are in my thoughts today, as are the victims of the latest terrorist attack in India. My heart breaks for the family members hurt so badly, and I pray that the appeal of Islamic militancy will soon wane. With greater global justice, perhaps that may happen.

Subway warning doesn’t break holiday stride

My son is fourth generation New Yorker, attending NYU. I flew up to see the Today Show. I took a small backpack with me, with food and a change of clothes. I landed in Ipsland, quickly found a shuttle that took me to a nice comfy train, which in turn took me to the subway. I wrote down the street names where I was dropped off so I could find my way back. I walked around all night, took the subway here and there, slept in Bryant Park and generally had a fabulous time. I loved the subway and wish we had decent public transportation with a nice place to wait underground, out of the weather.

Subway warning doesn’t break holiday stride

I grew up in New England and have ALWAYS been afraid of New York City. I turned down several trips to NYC and even a Broadway show because of my fear. And that was long before 9/11. But I have to admit, there is something so elegant, so charming, so AMERICAN about NYC. I have to confess I did visit the Statue of Liberty and desperately wanted to stay and see more, but once again fear prevailed. I hope I'll have the cahnce to visit NYC soon.

Subway warning doesn’t break holiday stride

j. It does have many wonderful things and use the subway several times everyday. One thing I have noticed and said MANY times already is the police do not check people in the subway. They set up station and stand around and talk to each other. They do not use thier time to check out bags and boxes. It is a mess waiting to happen... In two years, I have seen them check two people. Both beautiful young women, only with a small purse- while thousands of people walk right by, some with huge packages and boxes unchecked.
I am always the first to speak highly of our officers but I want to be honest. The police need to get more vigilant and serious about their job to help avoid a possible disaster.

Subway warning doesn’t break holiday stride

Wonderful article! I just returned from a two-week visit to NYC where I subwayed and hotfooted all over Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn day and night. Whether on city streets, in parks, subway stations or just on foot, I never for one moment felt threatened or uncomfortable. New Yorkers were welcoming, helpful and friendly. I lived in the city during both the early and late 1960s, loved it then and love it even more now. How sad to say that back home in New Orleans and living two blocks from the famed French Quarter, I feel unsafe outside my building at night and, indeed, at times during the day. Anyone in Manhattan wanna rent a (reasonable-rated!!!) room to a very independent 65-year old arts person? I'm ready to move back!! I still worked in NY on 9/11, so I was there for that experience. I can't sugarcoat the everyday struggles with parking, rent, and overall comfort in a crowded city. Still, I guess the feeling that Stokes writes about is practically born into us in that city. It is also a spirit that spreads to transplants, and is nurtured by the tone of the city itself. I miss NY because despite the struggles, I've never felt as safe or as comfortable anywhere, as I did in NY. Born Native New Yorker, both of my parents fled the South, for the 24-hour life filled with lights to pursue their dreams of Life, Liberty, Prosperity and Happiness. However, I could not wait to leave NYC. Off to Western New York we arrived 11 years ago. This is where my story begins... I revisited New York, New York for surgery/second opinion back in 1999. While traveling on the #9 train and arriving at 242nd Street/Van Courtland Park exit, we ran for the Yonkers bound bus downstairs. Two exits passed then I realized that I had left my pouch on the train. By heart raced with thoughts of, OH MY GOD! Within the hour my pouch with all of it's contents was back in my possession. Thanks to not only one but three strangers. One temporary worker--of one day, cleaning the trains gave my pouch to the Conductor, he then gave it to the Dispatcher, they made a call to my former employer--480 miles away, and another call was made to my next of kin in New York City. As I said before within one hour my money, jewelry and all of my important I.D. was returned back to me. I am the proudest New Yorker ever. Sure I left my home NYC to pursue my parents dream. However, the elimination of Rent Control ran the rents up so sky-high that I could not afford to stay there any longer. In essence, I thought that I had escaped crime, pests, etc., Yet, my story of how three strangers--MTA Workers, returned my pouch of life back to me. This example restored my faith in people from NYC, and erased any bad memories that I had of my hometown. NYC remains my home whenever someone askes me where I am from. I thank you for allowing me to share this overwhelmingly refreshing story with all of you. Hang in there and wear a smile, you never know what might be returned back to you(-:

Subway warning doesn’t break holiday stride

I went to NYC by myself last spring. The first night I saw South Pacific at Lincoln Center and the people next to me asked how I got from my hotel to the performance. When I replied I had arrived by taxi, they insisted on teaching me how to ride the subway back after the play. I never took another taxi. I bought a fare card and rode the subway everywhere else for the rest of my visit. It was great! Perfectly safe, well-lit and fun! Made me feel like a true New Yorker.

Subway warning doesn’t break holiday stride

After hearing about Mumbay and whatever is going on there and whether it is over or not is still not clear, this piece of writing is a delight to read. We parked a rental car at the Newark airport and took a bus to Manhattan, then rode the subway for five days. No complaints. It was efficient, cheap ... and yes, a little dirty around the edges here and there, and my boys, in particular, loved seeing the live rats between the tracks in a couple of stations, but what are you going to do? The system is more than 100 years old, and it carries, what, tens of thousands of people a day? Maybe hundreds of thousands?

We did all the tourist stuff we could cram into five days and would love to return when we have a chance.
