NEW ORLEANS, La.— New Orleans tourism and convention officials are hoping they’ve finally turned the corner in getting the sagging industry back up on its feet.

They spent the inflation adjusted equivalent of 5 billion dollars to build a levy system rated to withstand a 1 in 10000 year event. By contrast, the New Orleans levies are built to withstand a 1 in 100 year event, and as we've seen, not constructed with any particular vigor. Something else to consider there Stevie is that the sunk costs of infrastructure, meaning the money thats been spent down there over the years on roads, hospitals, schools, has already been spent, so to rebuild the city somewhere else (not happening) or more likely upgrade the infrastructure of cities like Atlanta, Houston, and Memphis to handle the influx of people, not to mention the loss to the real economy from port activity, long term tax revenue, and intellectual property, is way over 5 billion dollars. And if that doesn't get you, then maybe the fact that the government could have saved 195 billion its spent so far if it'd built the levies in the first place, us liberals call that foresight, at least then I wouldn't have to listen to uninformed punks like yourself wax on about prudence. Oh, and if you want to get into some really wild cost benefit analysis, how about spending the 15 billion to restore the coastline in order to dampen the severity of the hurricanes. Seriously though my friend, I know Sean Hannity told you it was a bad idea but its not. Finally, When you go to clean the toilets at the MGM grand tonight, remember that a lot of those people are there to see music that originated from new Orleans, not that I expect your musician acumen to outpase your limited intellect.

Convention-goers' big bucks return to New Orleans

As a New Orleans resident I have to laugh. We have had too much water, but the West is drying up. Just look at all the articles about the terrible droughts across the country. I prefer to live in a place that at least will still exist in the end while the desert dries up and blows away. And ya'll welcome to visit us, we always have a smile for a stranger.

Convention-goers' big bucks return to New Orleans

I agree with Steve - what a waste when the levees still cannot withstand any more than a level 3 hurricane

Convention-goers' big bucks return to New Orleans

I think Steve in Las Vegas is going to tire of the pile-on. If it weren't for giant dams and long-distance piping, Las Vegas wouldn't have any water. Step out of the glass house before you start throwing stones, my friend.

Convention-goers' big bucks return to New Orleans

Exactly. By your reasoning, everyone on the San Andreas fault should move because it will definitely happen again - worse than before. Should NYC disperse because of 9-11, as that city is a major terrorist target(lots of federal dollars spent there, case still open)? I could go on and on. Count your blessings that a natural or man-made disaster hasn't struck your city yet. We count our blessings for the outpouring of volunteers that responded to help us - the greatest response in our nation's history. The federal assistance needed here was and still is tremendous. I truly pray that you and yours are never in a position to need it. Let's means "Let us". It includes you. Come on down and help on your vacation. What about all the sections of the city that are near totally distroyed? The French Quarter didn't flood, of course they can get back up but it is by no means close to pre Katrina. Most communities still have no infrastuctures to support living in them. You write about restaurants, what about grocery stores, drug stores, etc. Daily living at a basic level is not coming back for many areas. There's more to New Orleans than the French Quarter. I grew up in NOLA and still have family there. This is not a comment from a tourist with blinders on.

Convention-goers' big bucks return to New Orleans

Steve, why do you care what we think or feel?

We believe in a City that has a hundred years of history. Let's talk about the crime epidemic that is strangling the region. Drugs, prostitution, gangs, homicide, etc.... Please check out the high number of murders in this article.

Back up to 265 last year
But by last year, the number in New Orleans had crept back up to 265. There had been 192 this year by mid-August, compared with 169 at the same time in 2004. Adjusted for the city’s size, those numbers dwarf murder rates in Washington, Detroit, Baltimore, Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York City.

New Orleans has a long way to go before I will ever step foot in that city again and it has nothing to do with flooding, food, poverty or any other pro or con. It has to do with out of control crime.

I appreciate anyone's civic loyalty and wishing to speak proudly of their community but "Nawlens" is in need of major infrastructural investments before it will flourish and become the major attraction it once was. The tourism board is inflating the numbers and they are counting all the workers that come in to help the city rebuild.

I know for fact that my employer which is a major telecom company has stated that they will take a wait and see approach before bringing in 30,000 employees for a convention.

Tt is what it is,
EG

Convention-goers' big bucks return to New Orleans

Yeah Steve,
You have a right to your opinion, but others have a different one.
